(Photo by Eliana Giaccheri) “The Heart of a Lover” is the second single from the Italian industrial darkwave act This Eternal Decay. The track is taken from their upcoming album, “Absolution”, set for release on May 19th, 2023. This dark synth ballad explores the concept of love as time passes, revealing how what once excited us can eventually become frightening.

“The Heart of a Lover” is available on all streaming and digital platforms from today, April 14, on. It features an Exfeind remix and an acoustic version of the track. And today Side-Line can exclusively reveal the all new video that will accompany the new single.

This non-traditional video showcases digital artwork created by Roman artist Alessandra Meneghello, also known as @disagire. The digital painting evolves in tandem with the song’s sounds, expressing the emotions woven into its sonic layers.

This Eternal Decay, a group focused on industrial-dark-wave music, consists of members Ricardo Sabetti (Spiral69), Pasquale Vico (Date at Midnight), Andrea Freda (Spiritual Front), and Alessio Schiavi (Avant-Garde). Their sound is a fusion of romantic darkwave, industrial beats, and synthpop elements. Their first album, “I Choose an Eternity of This” (Trisol Music Group), garnered positive reviews.

In April 2020, the band launched their sophomore album, “Silence”, featuring collaborations with artists from Then Comes Silence and Theaters Des Vampires. Despite pandemic-related cancellations of several European tour dates, the album saw three repressings within its initial five months.

In June 2021, they released the maxi single “Leave”, accompanied by two Kurs Lestat remixes and an acoustic rendition of the track with Luigi Rubino (Ashram) on piano. Their third studio album, “Nocturne”, was released on January 7th, 2022, and included guest appearances from Hapax and Avant-Garde, as well as remixes by ACTORS, Ash Code, Wisborg, and A Copy for Collapse.

In October 2022, This Eternal Decay began their 15-date European NocTour. Throughout the year, they worked on their fourth studio album, titled “Absolution”.

The album will be preceded by three singles, featuring remixes from Ductape and Zeromancer, and the first single/video is out now: “Perfection” which you can view below.

The album itself showcases eleven what the band describes as “murder synth-ballads” that delve into love as a simultaneously nurturing and destructive force. The album sees the band departing from their previous industrial sound to embrace their darkwave roots more deeply. The whole was recorded in 2022 at the Big Room Studios in Rome.

About This Eternal Decay

As the European Song Contest (ESC) 2021 finals are today, I thought it’d be a good occasion to reminisce about the winner of the competition in 1995, Secret Garden from Norway, and the remix made for their winning entry six years after. Their song ‘Nocturne’ was something quite different from the rest of the competitors at the time; not much lyrics, mostly instrumental, and a very surprising winner. Maybe the audience craved something different?

Anyhow, what made me think of this again was the use of the ‘Dr. No Club Remix’ at the intro of a new Norwegian humor series called ‘Olympiatoppen’. Doctor No was the main music project of Isak Rypdal (producer of Electro Spectre) back in the 2000’s, having several hit singles in the dance/trance segment like ‘Lastima’ and ‘La Luna’, and released the album ‘Fat Sound To The Masses’ in 2001 (check other songs at the bottom of this article).

Isak had arranged his remix to be used by NRK on national TV, and agreed it could be fun to have it surface again in conjunction with the ESC finals this week. His remix originally appeared on the ‘Grand Prix Party’ compilation released by Universal Music in 2001, where Isak were invited to make a contemporary version of ‘Nocturne’ as the final track of the compilation. The track also exists on a single track CD distributed when promoting the compilation.

Not only as a Norwegian, but as more than average interested in music, I thought the winning song in 1995 was a great exception from the usual ESC songs, daring to go outside the concept itselft, paving way to more diversity. And as major fan of electronic music, the remix from 2001 just added more value to the original.

Background/Info: Driven by ‘Graf’, ‘Nocturne’ and ‘Vicar’, DHI (Death And Horror Inc) saw the light of day in the late 80s and released their work during the 90s. Most of their work got released by Fringe Product, but their last album from 1994 (cf. “Pressures Collide”) got also released here in Belgium on the legendary KK Records. To celebrate the 25^th anniversary of this work, the album has been remastered plus expanded by the “Bitter Alloys”-EP released in 1993 on Fringe Product. The album this way gets a total amount of twenty songs!

Content: I confess DHI is a band I don’t exactly remember. So this album was an opportunity to rediscover their work, which is alternating Canadian (that’s where they come from) EBM sometimes reminding me of FLA and industrial or pure crossover. The tracklist is different than the original “Pressures Collide”, but the most interesting aspect is the new mastering of the  instrumental songs have been exposed to. I’ve been surprised to realize most of the songs still sound up to date. The guitar riffs are empowering the electronic layers while the vocals accentuate the power and energy emerging from these songs. Some passages remind me of Frontline Assembly during the 90s. The new edits of “Rage”,  “Ninety-Nine Realities” and “Red Carnival” will bring you back to the dynamism of DHI. The work also features a few instrumental songs and alternative edits.

+ + + : It’s interesting to see how an album can even remain very efficient 25 years after its original release. The new mastering has for sure empowered the original work, which will appeal to crossover fans. This format mixing electronics together with guitar was quite common and successful during the 90s. But it still makes sense today! I (re)discovered some cool songs, “Ninety-Nine Realities” getting somewhere lost in my brains, but now reactivated by this celebration album. I also have to say this album was produced in a very professional way.

– – – : A few instrumental songs (cf. “Exanthem”, “Undercurrent”, “Black Hour”) haven’t been remastered, which I can understand as they rather appear to be poorly inspired album fillers.

Conclusion: This is an album for the fans of DHI and KK Records, but first of all a real good opportunity to rediscover a somewhat forgotten formation from the Canadian EBM/industrial scene.

Best songs: “Rage – Amplified Vox Mix V2”, “Catastrophe (Mix V2)”, “Ninety-Nine Realities (A Tougher Mix V2)”, “Pain and courage (Mix V2)”, “Red Carnival (Mix V2)”.

DHI (death and horror inc) was formed in the late 1980s in Toronto’s electronic industrial scene by Graf, Nocturne and Vicar. The band released its work through the 1990s on Fringe Product, the Canadian label also home to Black Flag and The Dead Kennedys, with 1994’s “Pressures Collide” issued in Belgium on KK Records. Genre/Influences: Ambient, experimental, soundscape.

Background/Info: Zoharum takes us back in time. Both albums were originally released in 2000 on Hypnos. Dirk Serries has remastered both works while the artwork also is totally different from the original works.

Content: Vidna Obmana always has been a very unique experience in sound. Definitely devoted to an experimental-/ambient music universe, both albums totally fit to the original creation of the Belgian composer. Electronics and guitar playing both have been manipulated creating a sonic mist accentuated by some extra sounds and instruments. The flute is an essential instrument on both albums.

Sometimes evasive, mysterious, and even dark, the work of Vidna Obmana leads the listener into confusion. Some long-duration pieces feel a bit like an endless walk throughout unknown territories. Notice by the way some famous guests such as Steve Roach, Joris De Backer (Principle Of Silence) and Jim Cole contributed to some parts of the work.

+ + + : I think it was a good idea to re-release both albums together. The global approach and sound atmosphere supporting both releases are fully complementary. I like the great 8-panel digipak of the work. Sound-wise Vidna Obmana always has been mysterious, intriguing and rather unique in its genre. The overtone flute parts accentuates the mystery hanging over this work. I enjoy the baleful aspect of the work, which has been marvelously illustrated at “The First Coil” and “Jewel Of The Underground”.

– – – : Some tracks are really long and a bit monotonous after a while. Just pay attention for “The Fragmented Dome” and “Flame” and you’ll maybe get the same impression.

Conclusion: If there’s one word that comes into mind after the listening of both albums it would be definitely: ‘abyssal’! You get the impression of diving into a deep sonic ocean made of endless corridors and unsolvable mysteries.

Best songs: “Jewel Of The Underground”, “The First Coil” + “Revelation”, “A Platform Of Sorrow”.

VNV Nation have released their latest (10th) studio album, “Noire”. The album is out since October 12th (available here on vinyl) , also the day VNV embarked on a world tour.

The band’s first official video for “When Is The Future?” can be viewed below. The clip takes us on a tour of Tokyo, following Harris throughout the city and was directed by Michael Winkler.

Track 12 on our free download compilation “Face The Beat: Session 3” is by Cold Therapy. On “Alte Wunden” the Polish act brings their trademark sound of dark electro mixed with distorted German vocals and lush female backing vocals. You can listen to the track below.

Cold Therapy is a dark electro / electro-industrial band from Poland founded by Jacek Wolański in October 8, 2012. Jacek was known before from his work as Unsinn in 2010 and then Traumatize. Besides Cold Therapy, he is also composing neoclassical / orchestral music as Autumn Nocturne.

In 2013 Cold Therapy released the debut album “Embrace the Silence”. Right after that, the band was joined by the USA-based backing vocalist Jen and by the main vocalist Jan from Germany. In 2014 Cold Therapy changed its musical style to a more dark, atmosphere based sound with a more oldschool electro-industrial sound. The band also started a a permanent collaboration with Infinite Design which took over the band’s visual identity and artworks. An EP called “Carnival of Lies” followed which was a teaser holding all the changes the band went through.

In 2015 the band signed to Advoxya Records and released their 2nd album “Masquerade Infinite”. You can find more info on their official website.

Available by mid-December, just 10 years after its initial release on CD, is the vinyl release of the Depeche Mode tribute “Down to the Bone” by Sylvain Chauveau. Orders are accepted now.

Originally released by Les Disques du Soleil et de L’Acier [RIP] this Depeche Mode tribute offered an acoustic (piano, clarinet, cello, viola) take on 11 songs that have become cult classics. Chauveau literally just left the bare bones of the originals and together with the Nocturne ensemble reworked the material.

This album has been deleted for many years and besides this vinyl version also sees a new CD edition with all new, improved artwork.

Note that the material found on this LP was also performed live in France, Switzerland, Germany, Portugal, Czech Republic as well as in Taiwan. Sylvain Chauveau will play together with a new set of musicians some shows dedicated to “Down to the Bone”, including a first concert in Paris this very Friday, November 27 2015 at the BBmix festival taking place at the Carré Belle-Feuille / Carre Club à Boulogne (tickets available here).
