Background/Info: German label Cold transmission Music welcomes a collaborative project between Pete Burns aka Kill Shelter (Scotland) and Veronica Campbell aka Death Loves Veronica (USA).The work is meant as ‘a commentary on the artistic process and the commoditisation of personality in music.’

Content: The work features 4 songs and 4 alternate edits/remixes plus a hidden cut. Two songs were originally written by Veronica Campbell while 2 others have been written together. The songs sound pretty Electronic and driven by aggressive sequences while featuring an EBM touch on top. There’s some guitar play as well but it’s not predominant. Veronica Campbell sings in her familiar, sensual, spooky, way. The “Extended Mix” and “Kill Shelter” edits/remixes don’t bring that much diversity. The bonus cut sounds more into Experimental/Industrial music.

+ + + : I was surprised to see both artists working together but the biggest surprise is the explicit electronic approach of the band -which sounds far away from Kill Shelter. Pete Burns clearly transformed himself into a genius Electronic composer and especially the opening cut “Sex Tape” is a great, raw, bouncing piece of music featuring fuzzy guitar on top. This is the perfect match between Cold- and Dark-Wave with extra EBM on top. “The Sinner” is another great piece of music which is carried by a solid chorus. Both other cuts are darker and definitely much more than B-side cuts.

– – – : The bonus cut “La Petite Mort” is a sexy and explicit title but unfortunately not that inspired. But my single regret is that there are no more songs featured.

Conclusion: This is a surprising but impressive collaboration which I can only hope both artists will renew.

Background/Info: Texas (USA) based Veronica Campbell strikes back with the fourth full length album of her Death Loves Veronica project. The work has been introduced as ‘inspired by the atrocities of an evil world, told through the eyes of Veronica.’

Content: This female artist moves on composing Minimal-Electronics. Some parts feature guitar riffs (played by Tim Skold) on top while other passages move into Industrial influences. The work sounds cold, and obscure but also sensual because of Campbell’s sexy, whispering timbre of voice.

+ + + : Death Loves Veronica is an intriguing project and that’s because of the sphere she creates. It’s an obscure and freaky sound which is mixed with ghost-like, sensual vocals. I imagine this album being played in dark cellars and dungeon parties. I especially recommend the second half of the album featuring a few great songs but especially “In Hell” featuring guitar play by Bari-Bari.

– – – : I can’t say that the debut tracks of the album are disappointing but they definitely are a level below the second part.

Conclusion: Death Loves Veronica has something atypical and definitely ominous but also fascinating for its global minimalism.

Best songs: “In Hell”, “The Monster”, “It Kills Like God”, “Whore”.

American artist Veronica Campbell this year released her new album “Chemical”. The work has been introduced as a ’perverse, dark-electronic journey infused with themes of nihilism, inhibition, and deception’. It however is an intimate composition, which will appeal for lovers of Minimal-Electro/Wave music with an Experimental touch on top. The songs are mixing analogue electronic treatments and guitar with the cold, sensual vocals of Veronica. “Chemical” has been released by Cold Transmission Records, which clearly has a nose for talented artists. I’d an interesting chat with Veronica Campbell.

Q: How did you get in touch with Electronic music and how do you see yourself as an artist?

Veronica: I have been interested in Electronic music since early childhood. I received a keyboard at the age of 5 and began to write music then, making up what I thought notes looked like on small papers I collected. That was in England, where I also had my first solo singing performance at a school concert -it felt totally natural to me. When I returned to the United States, I began to perform in a Punk-Rock band at the age of 15. Our shows were at local bars and places teenagers shouldn’t have been allowed to play, but we drew a crowd and it was a lot of fun. By the age of 19, I was in a Death-Rock band. I was introduced to Industrial music around this time as well, (and dated an Industrial musician I won’t name, but who influenced me greatly) and it has always been a part of my life. I think these various forms of music helped shape who I became much later as a solo artist.

Q: Your new album “Chemical” has been introduced as a ‘perverse, dark-electronic journey infused with themes of nihilism, inhibition, and deception’. Can you gives us more details about this quote and how did you finally transpose themes into music?

Veronica: My previous albums felt, to me, like they were all over the place. The first two were actually EPs, the first being more of a demo. The third album, “Lucid Dreams”, was very much an experimental piece. I think I was still feeling out how I wanted to sound as a solo artist. I felt some pressure to remain ‘feminine’ vocally and composition-wise, when I didn’t really want to. So with “Chemical”, I recorded it without fear and told myself that I would release it myself because I was pretty sure no label would be interested in it and how bold it was. But labels were interested, and I was fortunate to have Cold Transmission have a listen to it.

I very intentionally created “Chemical” with a theme in mind, but one that lives in duality -a difficult thing to explain in detail, but many of the songs have two entirely different meanings, but still relate to the theme itself, or actually creates two themes.

Q: You composed this album right after recovering from an intensive health-related surgery where the use of your arms was limited. How did that happened and in, which way did music became a kind of therapy and/or cure?

Veronica: I had to have three masses/tumors removed from my breasts and some tissue from around the breast area in October of 2020. Two of the incisions were under both arms, and very large. I still cannot extend my arms fully without discomfort. The recovery process was painful and I was medicated to help get through it. Something about that procedure helped create the bravery to compose “Chemical” without those fears of being judged. I was angry at the world at times, at existence. This was not my first surgery for this issue, so I felt some bitterness at the time. It helped the mood of the album.

Unfortunately, because I have been honest about my medical experience, I have sometimes been made fun of because of it (trolled). It’s been rare, but there are perhaps those in the scene who are not very welcoming of a woman who can produce and record her own music in the style that I do? But most people have been very supportive and seem to understand the direction and message of the music. 

Q: The sound of “Chemical” has something pretty retro-like and into minimalism. What does it say about your sources of inspiration and eventually references when it comes to this style of music?

Veronica: I actually record more parts, sounds, into a song originally, then remove parts as I begin to mix the track. They become minimal as I experience how each instrument sounds against the other and keep what I feel makes the most sense. I feel that in the emptiness of a song, the ear can experience what might have been missed if more was present. I think having grown up on Punk-Rock, 90s Industrial, and Death-Rock keep me centered somehow. I also listen to Black-Metal and 80s Metal at times. I try not to listen to anything too similar to what I’m trying to do myself for fear of being influenced a little too much by it.

Q: You released several clips for the new album and here again I noticed a pretty minimal- and cold atmosphere. What did you try to express by the clips and what’s their importance and impact today?

Veronica: The cold feeling was exactly what I wanted people to hear. I have sensory processing issues. Maybe that influenced “Chemical” more than I had intended, but I’m glad it did. I’m very sensitive to light, smells, and sound and anything that overwhelms my senses can trigger a migraine. I take medications for this, but also have to live a pretty sheltered life to protect my senses. Basically, I’m not neuro-typical at all.

Q: You’re not only a musician, but still a novelist and film director. Artistic expression clearly takes an important part of your life so what do you consider as your main accomplishments? Is there a kind of common thread between all your different activities? And what are your further plans?

Veronica: I plan to continue to focus on music. It keeps me at the happiest I am capable of being. All of my artistic endeavors were a form of self-therapy, to help focus my OCD and sensory issues. Music for me is compulsory, it must be created, if not for others, for myself. Novels were what I spent my time on while my children were small and needed more of my time. People have asked me why I don’t write like I used to because I won awards at it, and with short films.

Music was always my first passion and as soon as my children were teens, I rushed back into it. Filmmaking flows into my music videos now, and the albums, to me, are very similar to novels in audio form. It all connects. Everything does somehow and I find that part of life very interesting.

Background/Info: “Chemical” is the third album by American female artist Veronica Campbell. The album has been introduced as a ’perverse, dark-electronic journey infused with themes of nihilism, inhibition, and deception’. She composed the songs during the recovery of a surgery.

Content: Death Loves Veronica is mixing elements of Electro-Wave and pure Electro-Minimalism with Experimental components on top. Analog electronics have been now and then empowered by guitar riffs. The production of the vocals has something cold and pretty sterile, reminiscent of 80s productions.

+ + + : It’s hard to say if it’s because of a ‘female’ touch, but this work has something personal and different from most productions. I like the retro-elements evoking good-old Electro-Wave, which are matching with the production of the vocals. Some vocals are cold and without any emotions while other passages have something icy, sensual-like. The first half of the album reveals great songs carried by deep, resonating bass lines and numerous Electro effects. There’re also a few great songs in the second part of the album; “Death Kiss” is driven by a harder kick and “The Sinner” has something pretty dark-sexy like.

– – – : A few songs in the midst of the album (cf. “There’s Nothing Left”, “Red Leather” and “Abhorrent”) are slower and more Experimental-like, but not exactly the most convincing ones creating a kind of anti-climax.

Conclusion: “Chemical” is a cool piece of music, which will ravish all lovers of Minimal-Electronics.

Best songs: “LIES”, “Burn”, “The Sinner”, “Death Kiss”, “The Darkest Place”.

Background/Info: After having released last year albums on Unknown Pleasures Records and ScentAir Records, Italian artist Marco Cattani (Halo Effect, The Mark) strikes back with a new opus on Wave Records. Chemical Waves have again invited numerous guest singers. Vocalists from Bedless Bones, The Arch, The Purge, Death Loves Veronica, Sara Stuttgart, Then Came The Rain, Velvet Kills, Iris Capricorn, XTR Human and Social Station contributed to the work.

Content: The sound formula hasn’t really changed. Chemical Waves remains driven by the dark legacy of 80s Cold/Dark-Wave music. The singers again each inject a very personal touch to the work, which creates an interesting diversity. From sensual vocals to low, resonating vocals there’s a lot to experience while you’ll also notice two instrumental cuts.

+ + + : Chemical Waves holds on the true spirit of Dark/Cold-Wave music, which is mainly created by the magic of the guitar playing. I heard some good matches with the singers of The Arch, The Purge and especially Su Eko/Velvet Kills, reminding me a bit of Placebo.

– – – : The global approach of this project remains interesting and sometimes exciting although I’m missing ‘the’ singer of this band. I also preferred previous productions, the sound becoming a bit too predictable while the songs are less efficient. Being too prolific is sometimes undermining quality…

Conclusion: This is not the album from Chemical Waves I would recommend listening to first.

Best songs: “Rangers On The Road”, “Demon In Me”.

Chemical Waves is the darkwave and post-punk solo project of Marco Cattani from Rome, Italy, who is also a member of Halo Effect and The Mark. Discogs lists self-released digital material between 2012 and 2015, including the album “The Garden Of Forking Paths” and the singles “The Origin” and “Murders TV” (afmusic, 2012). Sebastian Koch from Audioglobe, the biggest distributor for the dark wave scene, is informing that most (but not al) vinyl manufacturing companies are facing a huge delay in production of vinyl releases.

Sebastian: “For the past months, production capacities in the pressing plants anywhere have been extremely overloaded due to various reasons (one of them being the famous ship accident in the Suez Canal. This has led to huge delays and many pressing plants do not even accept new customers anymore.”

Absolution Fest announces it’s return. The festival takes place in Tampa (Ybor City), FL on October7th-9th and they have just announced the line-up.

The Absolution Fest features artists from the Post-Punk, Industrial, Darkwave, and Synthpop scenes. Headlining the festival this year will be the synthpop electro act Mr.Kitty, post-punkers Actors, and electropop duo Korine.

Absolution Fest also features the industrial/pop artist Kanga, and the industrial artist Curse Mackey. “Chemical” is the new album by Death Loves Veronica, whose new album results to be heavily saturated with post-industrial and gothic influences and recorded with analog synths and minimal guitar work.

Veronica recorded the framework of this album within a two-week time period while in recovery from an intensive health-related surgery. With limited use of her arms, she dove into the more technical capabilities of her favorite synthesizers, keeping her distance from the use of MIDI.

The release comes in 2 formats, a limited edition of 200 copies on transparent magenta white marbled vinyl and in a 6-panel digipak.

The project debuted in 2018 with the demo album, “Vampiros Electric” bringing a cold wave-minimalist sound created with a variety of synth work and distinctly clean vocals. A collection of her works has been released on European label Swiss Dark Nights entitled, “Three Acts”, shortly after followed by last year’s album “Lucid Dreams”.

The Rome (IT) based post-punk act Chemical Waves returns with an all new album on April 30th via Wave Records. “Stories From The World Before” is the next chapter for the solo project of Marco Cattani (Halo Effect, The Mark) in collaborations with several international artists.

This time Cattani worked with Bedless Bones, Gerd Van Geel/The Arch, The Purge, Death Loves Veronica, Sara Stuttgart, Then Came The Rain, Su Eko/Velvet Kills, Iris Capricorn, Xtr Human and Social Station.

The result is a 12-track release for which a first video has just been released, namely one for “Kiss The Ring” featuring Bedless Bones. Note that the album will also be out as a CD ecopack limited to 200 copies.
