Cold Spring Records is set to unearth a piece of cyberpunk history with the first standalone CD release of the “Decoder” soundtrack. Out on 19 September 2025, this edition marks the first time in 33 years that the complete score of the 1984 West German film has been available on its own. Pre‑orders have opened via Cold Spring’s Bandcamp and web store, with orders shipping around the release date.

Directed by Muscha (Klaus Maeck) and loosely based on William S. Burroughs’ manifesto “The Electronic Revolution”, “Decoder” is an underground film that blends sci‑fi, horror and political satire. The story follows Jaeger, a government agent charged with quelling unrest, whose control is upended when a musician (FM Einheit) discovers that swapping soothing Muzak with abrasive industrial noise in a burger shop sparks riots. The film’s subversive plot – about using sound as a weapon against corporate control – earned it cult status and has been praised for capturing early 1980s Berlin counter‑culture.

The movie’s cast blurs fiction and reality: industrial pioneer FM Einheit of Einstürzende Neubauten plays himself, Christiane F. (best known from Christiane F. – Wir Kinder vom Bahnhof Zoo) appears, and counter‑culture icons Genesis P‑Orridge and William S. Burroughs portray a Black Noise priest and an insurrectionist salesman, respectively. Their presence, along with cameo appearances by experimental actor Bill Rice, added to the film’s mystique. Burroughs’ own writings inspired the film’s concept and he contributed spoken‑word sections to the soundtrack.

About the tracklist

Cold Spring’s “Decoder” release compiles eleven tracks by some of the most influential figures in industrial and synth‑pop music. The opener, “Muzak for Frogs”, is a collaboration between Genesis P‑Orridge and Soft Cell’s Dave Ball; The The contributes “Three Orange Kisses From Kazan”; and Soft Cell’s classic “Seedy Films” appears in its original form. Einstürzende Neubauten’s “Compressed Metal” offers metallic clatter and drones, while other tracks such as “Dream”, “Main Theme (Showdown)” and “Main Theme (Finale)” anchor the film’s narrative.

The CD arrives in a matte‑laminated digipak with a ten‑page fold‑out booklet. Cold Spring is offering a special pre‑order price until 18 September, after which the price rises slightly.

About ‘Decoder’, the film

Originally filmed in Hamburg and Berlin, this was a low‑budget production that lured major talent from the industrial and experimental scenes. The film’s mixture of street‑level punk aesthetics, urban unrest and avant‑garde soundtrack elements prefigured later cyberpunk explorations of corporate control and audio manipulation.

The notion that “Muzak is more than music” – a slogan repeated by fans – sums up both the film’s critique of media conditioning and the album’s appeal.

For collectors and fans of industrial music, Cold Spring’s release is an opportunity to own a carefully restored piece of sonic history, one that weaponised background music.
