Sabled Sun – 2149 (Album – Cryo Chamber)

Background/Info: Set up in 2012 by Simon Heath (Cryo Chamber owner and of course the man behind Atrium Carceri) Sabled sun is back with its eleventh album to date, but the fifth one in the “21xx Series” dealing with ‘a man in hibernation waking up to a world in ruins’. This time we move to the fifth year, 2149.

Content: Sabled sun is also back with the first album since 2016. I can’t say that the sound is totally different, remaining driven by the Cinematographic style of the label, but there are some new elements featured. Some tracks are featuring elements reminding me of the ‘Berlin school’, featuring a more space & psychedelic effect. These cuts are more into ‘electronics’ revealing minimal sound treatments. Globally speaking the composition is recovered with dark atmospheres, sometimes accentuated by drone fragments and spoken samples.

+ + + : Sabled Sun remains ultra Cinematographic, like a display case for the label. I however experienced this new sonic travel as one of the most diversified ones by the project. I enjoy some of the minimalistic passages and especially this ‘Berliner’ sound is interesting and I dare to say ‘new’. “Maze”, but especially “ A Last Dream Of The Flesh” is a great track. The work also remains a great and dark Cinematographic listening.

– – – : Some tracks are maybe a little bit short.

Conclusion: It’s good to see Simon Heath has found new inspiration for his Sabled Sun project; this is great stuff for the Cryo Chamber lovers.

Best songs: “A Last Dream Of The Flesh”, “Maze”, “The Builders”, “Cloud”.

Atrium Carceri & Cities Last Broadcast – Black Stage Of Night (Album – Cryo Chamber)

Genre/Influences: Dark-ambient, dark-cinematographic.

Format: Digital, CD, Vinyl.

Background/Info: Simon Heath (Atrium Carceri, Sabled Sun ao) and Pär Boström (Kammarheit, Hymnambulae, Bonini Bulga ao) have already worked together on a previous album (cf. “Black Corner Den”) and another one with God Body Disconnect as an extra artist. They also did a few more albums together as Atrium Carceri and Kammarheit so both Swedes know each other very well.

Content: You don’t really get the feeling this album sounds like a side-project between label mates. There’s a true cohesion in the songs, which are mixing the dark-ambient and –cinematographic styles together. The songs have been slowly built up, progressively creating a haunting atmosphere, which feels a bit like announcing a disaster. Field recordings have been added to the writing. Some passages are accentuated by sad tunes leading the listener into an imaginary sadness.

+ + + : The main strength and characteristic of this album is the intimate mood created by both artists. Even if the tracks sound dark and supported with desperate atmospheres, there also is something evasive running through the composition. “A New Constellation” is a brilliant exposure of this inner feeling. There’s a touch of grace running through the album, which finally gave birth to a few beautiful tracks.

– – – : This is probably the best album released between both musicians. It however misses a total climax to speak about a genius work, but there’s magic vibes between Atrium Carceri and Cities Last Broadcast.

Conclusion: There’s strong chemistry between both artists, which resulted in a passionate and very personal production.

Best songs: “A New Constellation”, “Mind Turns To Night”, “Attic And Wormwood”, “All Things Nocturnal”.

‘Click Interview’ with Atrium Carceri: ‘I Am A Very Technically Inclined Producer’

In 2003 I heard the debut album “Cellblock” from the Swedish solo-project Atrium Carceri. This dark-ambient opus was one more great production released on the legendary Cold Meat Industry. Simon Heath should rapidly became a recognized artist in his music genre. He went on unleashing noticeable albums, started with side-projects such as Sabled Sun, Krusseldorf… and set up his own label Cryo Chamber in 2012. Simon Heath is a busy and prolific artist who by the end of 2018 released the newest Atrium Carceri opus “Codex”.

Q: 2018 has been a prolific year for Atrium Carceri. How do you look back at your different releases?

Simon: It’s been a creative year. I got the opportunity to work with a lot of talented artists and finally managed to finish up “Codex”, my solo album I have been working on for quite some time. All in all I tried pushing my boundaries, but my memory is getting blurry now that the year is drawing to a close.

Q: Your newest album “Codex” took you three years to get accomplished. What have been the different stadia you had to gone through to achieve “Codex” and what have been the main challenges and difficulties you encountered?

Simon: Since I created art, text, sounds, mastering, design, I could go back and forth between it all instead of finalizing stages and moving on. Both a curse and a blessing since it is a lot more time consuming, but being able to move freely within each step creates a lot of opportunity to tweak the coherency. If I had to name something to be happy about regarding this album it is how everything fits together.

Q: I experienced “Codex” as one of your most intimate releases in history. What is it really all about and how do you perceive this album in the Atrium Carceri discography?

Simon: I try not to explain too deeply how to interpret my works since it will ruin some of the personal interpretations out there and no interpretation is wrong. But for me the overarching theme is how we move between different states of mind and our relation to the reality of the majority. A pretend relationship based on lingual guesswork too primitive to fully cross reference our own reality.

Q: You like to work around ‘concepts’ so what is it all about for “Codex” and how do you transpose a concept into sounds, which become tracks and finally an entire album?

Simon: For me it comes down to justifications of sound within the concept. Each sound should represent something within the concept of the track; ‘cool sounds’ just aren’t enough justification for me. And then the tracks themselves have to be justified in relation to each other, and of course we can’t stop there, the artwork has to be justified in relation to the tracks. The reverse is also true, and going back and forth between everything to re-align/re-edit and adjust until it all fits together takes time. You tweak a sound, and it can mess with the flow of the album, mess with the artwork and the feel of the tracks change and so on.

Q: The music –properly speaking, is important, but the CD-version of “Codex” also features a digibook. What did you try to express by this artwork/digibook?

Simon: I made a decision on this album to not include any vocals in the audio itself, instead the DigiBook shoulders the responsibility with the narrative this time around. A big challenge is to find a balance with the narrative; don’t want too much exposition, but do not want to be overly ambiguous either and me working with art and text at the same time makes this process easier, if a bit more time consuming.

Q: Especially during the past few years you’ve collaborated with an impressive number of artists. What fascinates you in the work with other artists and does it have an impact/influence on your own way of working/composing/producing?

Simon: I thoroughly enjoy to dive into the workflow of other artists and am often blown away by different approaches to creating sound. While I am a very technically inclined producer, I often find myself the most creatively stimulated working with artists on the other side of the coin, true artists like the toy maker Pär of Cities Last Broadcast who has his weird tape-loop laboratory with self-made instruments, or musicians like Bruce of God Body Disconnect, a microphone connoisseur that jazz it out on his drums like it’s no big deal. They blow me away with their skill sets since they are so very different from my own.

Sabled Sun – 2148 (CD Album – Cryo Chamber)

Background/Info: Sabled Sun is for sure one of the most prolific projects Simon Heath is involved with. The debut album (cf. “2145”) was released in 2012 while “2148” is already the tenth full length for the Cryo Chamber label owner.

It also is the fourth opus from the so-called “21xx series” dealing ‘about a man in hibernation waking up to a world in ruins’ who’s now taking us through the fourth year 2148!

Content: “2148” reveals a more sophisticated and complex songwriting compared to previous releases in the series and even the global work of Sabled Sun. It not only is a dark-ambient/cinematographic driven work, but also an album revealing a wider spectrum of influences.

“2148” is more elaborated than previous releases. There’s a wider spectrum of sounds mixed with many field recordings and surprising electronic sequences. I noticed some piano arrangements, and also a kind of abstract technoid sound sculptures and female samplings repeating the title from one of the tracks.

The work progressively evolves towards impressive sonic assaults and some more explicit electronic passages. The atmospheric aspect is also present, but a little bit more in the background.

+ + + : “2148” reminds me of a film in, which you have to create your own images. It definitely deals with a dark and sometimes pretty tormented subject that totally matches with the concept of the “21xx”-series. Sound-wise, I like the diversity of this work on, which Simon Heath gives me the impression to have exorcised some new sonic demons. It’s a creative work composed with numerous sounds and noise sources. “Overgrown” is the absolute masterpiece for the overwhelming vibrating sound blasts right in the beginning and the more refined piano keys support a real frightening and accomplished piece.

– – – : I can easily imagine some fans of the early Sabled Sun work will regret the soundscape format, which seems to have replaced by a more complex writing style.

Conclusion: I’m always a bit skeptical with some ultra prolific bands, but Sabled Sun took me by surprise releasing its most accomplished and best work to date!

Cryo Chamber has just released Sabled Sun’s “2148” album. In case you didn’t know, Sabled Sun is the solo project by Cryo Chamber’s label boss Simon Heath. It’s already the 4th album from the Sabled Sun’s 21xx series, about a man in hibernation waking up to a world in ruins. This new release takes you through the 4th year, namely 2148.

The plot (yes, this album has a plot and it’s a well written one!): The protagonist of the story finally finds The Ark. The storyline takes you through robot filled chasms, overgrown laboratories, uplink stations and a deteriorated civilisation.

Musically you can expect field recordings combined with distant piano and dusty strings and the odd drone dropping in. Heath has succeeded again in capturing what his fans like the most. Just read this comment by In.Visible.Generator: “Nothing out there can deal with the quality and depth of this project. It leaves narrative images like if reading a book and adds new puzzle pieces and possibilities to the Sabled Sun story. Just fascinating how “Locus Arcadia” becomes part of the whole. I hope Simon is sending out some new “Signals” after this one.”

Nyarlathotep : A Cryo Chamber Collaboration (3CD Album – Cryo Chamber)

Background/Info: Cryo Chamber definitely appears to be under the influence of H.P. Lovecraft. The label already released the “Cthulhu”-collaboration featuring several label artists working together and achieving a great opus.

“Nyarlathotep” is a new collaboration between an impressive number of label formations. The story is about ‘A season of political and social upheaval. Mankind felt as if the world was at a breaking point, but no one wanted to speak of this. Seasons grew hotter. Our faith in the known gods faltered. The timing was ripe for the arrival of Nyarlathotep.’

It has been transposed into music by Kammarheit, God Body Disconnect, Dronny Darko, Ugasanie, Kristoffer Oustad, Alphaxone, Svartsinn, SiJ, Gydja, Atrium Carceri, Darkrad, Flowers For Bodysnatchers, Aegri Somnia, Randal Collier-Ford, Neizvestija, Metatron Omega, Wordclock, ProtoU, Northumbria, Sjellos, Sabled Sun, Council Of Nine, Cryobiosis, Apocryphos, Enmarta and Mystified. Three albums were accomplished.

Content: “Nyarlathotep 1” takes us away for a voyage throughout industrial metal sounds rapidly joined by dark, buzzing noise waves. The sound reveals heavy vibrations and the magic of an Eastern-like flute. We progressively join an imaginary world of obscure reverie, like entering a tenebrous universe featuring spooky voices. It also sounds like a misty sound universe made of disturbing passages accentuated by impressive sonic blasts.

“Nyarlathotep 2” definitely sounds more into the soundscape format. It’s not as heavy, but more into a dense and constant chilling atmosphere. It quite progressively evolves towards harder passages like echoing thunder in the background.

The final chapter and album “Nyarlathotep 3” takes off with a kind of signals from an imaginary, distant planet. It’s pretty astral-minded while reinforced by great sweeps and new buzzing sound waves. It moves towards a crescendo until reaching an absolute climax while the final part sounds pretty oppressive and tormenting, somewhat reminding to the early work of Lustmord.

+ + + : The realization of this work is absolutely amazing and rather unique. This is the kind of concept that wouldn’t have been possible without an artist taking the responsibility to create an interaction between all contributors. Simon Heath has been probably the one that made this enormous project come true. You don’t really have the impression of listening to a mishmash created by numerous artists. The work is pretty compact and homogenous featuring a great 1^st and 3^rd disc.

– – – : The release stands for more than 3 hours of sound and music so you really have to take your time listening to this work in the right circumstances. I wanted to discover the work without interruption, which took me several takes.

Conclusion: “Nyarlathotep” is a great conceptual release based upon an original idea, but it also reveals the ‘family’ approach of Cryo Chamber to unite all bands under the same wings.

Cryo Chamber reveals the followup to ‘Cthulhu and Azathoth’: ‘Nyarlathotep’ – list of dark ambient artists revealed!

In 2014 Cryo Chamber got some of the most prominent dark ambient artists together to synchronize their studios during a year of collaboration creating the album “Cthulhu” in tribute to H.P. Lovecraft. It was followed up by the “Azathoth” collaboration album in 2015.

Following “Cthulhu and Azathoth”, Cryo Chamber now announces “Nyarlathotep”. This time 25 artists (!!!) synchronized their studios to create this tribute to H.P. Lovecraft. The album comes as a 3CD set and will soon be available for ordering via Cryo Chamber’s Bandcamp page.

The album will be officially out September 27, 2016. And to wet the appetite (and we’re pretty sure that serious dark ambient fans will be craving for this release) here’s already the list of bands which collaborated on the upcoming release:

Sabled Sun – Signals IV-V-VI (3CD Album – Cryo Chamber)

Background/Info: Simon Heath is one of those visionary artists active in the dark-ambient fields who seems to have an endless inspiration to compose new music. While Heath will be forever associated with his main project (cf. Atrium Carceri) he now takes us back to the abyssal soundscapes of Sabled Sun.

This is a collection of three albums, which were originally released as separate albums. Like the first three albums in this series, they now have been released in an alluring digipak format.

Content: The work is inspired by the haunting theme of ‘what happened to humanity after waking up from hibernation deep sleep to an empty world void of human life’. Every single album features one, long during soundscape (track) for more or less one hour.

The answer of Sabled Sun rapidly appears to be a world of despair. A kind of nihilistic vision where the last trace of human life has been absorbed by a cavern-like sound atmosphere. The “Signals”-series is not exactly an easy listening as it needs you entire attention to catch the little sonic details, which are often emerging from the background. The global atmosphere remains extremely dark and I dare to say tormented. “Signals” is not exactly the kind of album to relieve you from depression.

The dense sound layers are like imaginary sonic needles, which are drilling our poor mortal brain. The imagination is exposed to a high degree of torture, but in the end that’s precisely what we expect from this kind of sound, isn’t it?! “Signals” is an invitation to join an endless sound tunnel, which moves towards a crescendo until reaching its target: getting the listener into consternation!

+ + + : This is the kind of work you have to discover by playing it at maximum volume or by using headphones, which reinforce the power of the background noises.

– – – : The work appears to be pretty similar and the lack of diversity can be the main reason you might get bored after a while. This is a production for the heaviest fans in the genre and Sabled Sun freaks.

Conclusion: Sabled Sun clearly reveals another side of Simon Heath, which is mainly characterized by a strong sci-fi & soundtrack inspiration. Speaking for myself I prefer his “21xx”-series.

Cryo Chamber informs us that Sabled Sun’s “Signals IV-V-VI” 3CD set has arrived. The long awaited 3CD release of the “Signals” series comes in a digipak and can be ordered right here. It collects the 3 tracks that make up the 3CD set: “Signals IV” (58:53), “Signals V” (58:08) and “Signals VI” (01:03:26).

“Signals” is a series of space ambient works that portrays signals that the protagonist from the Sabled Sun – 21xx series finds on his journey to find out what happened to humanity after waking up from hibernation deep sleep to an empty world void of human life.

Azathoth – A Cryo Chamber Collaboration (DCD Album – Cryo Chamber)

Content: Last year Cryo Chamber released one of the most noticeable conceptual albums in history of dark-ambient music. “Cthulhu” was a collaboration of multiple artists in the genre accomplishing a phenomenal work around Lovecraft’s famous Cthulhu mythos and Dream Circle.

“Azatoth” is the successor to this impressive work. It again deals with the fantasy universe of H.P. Lovecraft, which has been transposed into dark sonorities by an impressive list of bands. It’s important to mention this is not a compilation, but an amazing collaboration featuring Atrium Carceri, Kammarheit, Foundation Hope, Taphephobia, Alphaxone, Alt3r3d Stat3, Apocryphos, Aseptic Void, Cryobiosis, Dark Matter, Darkrad, Dronny Darko, Halgrath, Mystified, Wordclock, Sabled Sun, Neizvestija, Randal Collier-Ford, Sjellos, Svartsinn, Tarradaemon and Ugasanie.

Each disc features just one single track. The 1st disc featuring “Azathoth 1” will hold you in its grip for almost an hour. It’s hard to imagine how this collaboration took part, but it once more stands for a real coup de force. You simply don’t get the impression this work resulted from the common efforts of all those bands. You’ll immediately get the impression of embarking on a heavy ambient trip leading you to imaginary freaky places. Low sound waves reinforced by overwhelming dark treatments are emerging to the surface creating a dark and frightening sensation.

Multiple sound treatments suddenly emerge like small pieces of a wider sonic puzzle. “Azathoth” stands for the chemistry of dark sounds, but especially for the chemistry between all those great artists. It’s hard to find the real input of every single formation, but I can assure you the impact of their common labor simply will leave you stupefied. This is for sure one of the most ambitious releases in history of dark-ambient music!

Cavernous passages joined by icy chain and humming sounds of imaginary spirits, plus multiple field recordings imprison the listener in a great, but freaky sonic cage from which you don’t really want to escape. You’ll progressively beg for more, just like reading a thriller which you cannot but down until the very end.

The 2nd disc featuring the track “Azathoth 2” will bring you more than 60 minutes of new chilling experiences. The style hasn’t changed and will directly lead you again towards the darkest corners of your imagination. I get the impression of being aspirated by the mouth of an evil force. This composition is carried by low vibrating sound waves featuring a kind of white noises. There’s a very progressive evolution towards darker and overwhelming passages.

This composition is also characterized by a few more accessible parts accentuating some prosperity. The work however remains ultra dark revealing chilling strings and echoing sound treatments.

Conclusion: It simply sounds incredible how this album has been realized while revealing a perfect cohesion between the input all of artists. I guess there’s no better sonic ode to Lovecraft than this work.

The largest dark ambient collaboration to date, ‘Cthulhu’, gets a follow up with over 20 artists on ‘Azathoth’

In 2014 Cryo Chamber got some of the most prominent dark ambient artists together to synchronise their studios during a year of collaboration creating the album “Cthulhu”. This year Cryo Chamber almost doubles the effort with a rumoured 2CD release follow-up. No less than 20 artists have been working for the last year to synchronise and co-create “Azathoth”. The album is scheduled for release in late 2015.

Note that “Cthulhu” and “Azathoth” are not compilations but collaborations.

Genre/Influences: Dark-ambient, cinematographic.

Content: Sabled Sun likes conceptual series releases and “2147” is the 3rd one in the so-called “21xx”-series. Set up by Simon Haeth (Atrium Carceri) this project became a rather prolific sound constructor.

“2147” deals about ‘a man awoken from hibernation to a world in ruins, takes us through the third year 2147’. This man will have to survive and his adventures have been transposed into this new and poignant dark cinematographic sound. The first part of the work clearly evokes an apocalyptic sound view created by an entire arsenal of noises and field recordings. It all results in an atmosphere of angst, but which also moves into evasive passages featuring remarkable and intriguing resonating spoken female vocals (cf. “Our Mechanical Children”).

The soundtrack approach of the work has been accentuated on a few cuts. Heath uses low piano sounds to create a melancholic mood while a touch of experimentalism was added by different new noises. Most of the tracks are rather short and that’s sometimes a pity, especially when you’re totally captivated by one of these cuts. Sabled Sun experiments with different ideas mixing electronic treatments and guitar experiments.

The apocalyptic mood from the beginning comes back again in the last part of the album. “The Space Center” is the most elaborate track and will hold your attention for more than 10 minutes. This is a great piece of music revealing echoing electronic effects and voices lost in space while overwhelming sound layers and meticulous stereo effects progressively join in. “Hibernation” empowers the apocalyptic touch of the work while the piano-like “Dreams Without A Future” appears to be a dreamy, but melancholic final cut.

Conclusion: Sabled Sun always takes the listener away in a dark and pure sci/fi world facing a desolate and often nihilistic vision of the future.
