Italian darkwave composer Roberto Del Vecchio, the mind behind The Last Hour, has released his latest collection, “It Is the Hour.” This project is a curated mix of remastered past works alongside new versions of older songs, offering a fresh interpretation of the band’s atmospheric sound. The release evokes dizzy memories of fading illusions, death, and the timeless space between dream and reality.

The new collection serves as both a reflection on past musical chapters and a continuation of the band’s evolution, as Del Vecchio explores themes of life, death, and the suspended moments that lie between.

The Last Hour is no stranger to the dark music scene. Founded in 2004, Del Vecchio first gained recognition with the song “Into Empty Depth”, which appeared on the Cold Meat Industry sampler “Flowers Made of Snow”. His career has spanned several decades, with the project’s self-titled debut album released in 2008 on Other Voices Records. The follow-up, “Deadline”, came in 2014 via Seventh Crow Records, and the band’s most recent album, “Black Eyes”, was released in 2022, featuring Carlo Baldini on bass and synth.

The Last Hour is an integral part of Del Vecchio’s long-standing career in the dark music genre. Over the years, he has worked on other projects like Gothica and Les Jumeaux Discordants”, further cementing his influence on the scene”. “With “It Is the Hour,” Del Vecchio once again demonstrates his mastery in blending nostalgia with forward-thinking soundscapes, inviting listeners to reflect on life’s transient nature.”

Fans can explore “It Is the Hour” on major platforms, including Bandcamp, Spotify, Apple Music, and Amazon.

The post-punk duo Supernova 1006 released their latest single, “How I Need You”, via Negative Gain Productions.

“How I Need You” was planned to be released as a bonus initially. “However, it looked isolated and self-sufficient. Therefore, we decided to make the song an independent work. Its distinctive feature was a return to the old sound, characterized by the “stringiness” and buoyancy of a cold sound. “How I Need You” gives the feeling of being immersed in a big cold black lake in which no one lives with the silence and comfort of a lonely existence. It is a sonic journey through a cyberpunk landscape, filled with pulsating rhythms and melancholic melodies.”

The single release also features remixes from artists such as Casket Cassette, Giirls, CULTTASTIC and Blind Seagull. “How I Need You” is available now on all major digital outlets including Spotify and Bandcamp.

About Supernova 1006

Supernova 1006 was established in September 2014 by Andrey Yukhovich (guitar, vocals), Anton Korchevsky (bass, synthesizer), and Elena Polupan (drum machine, synthesizer). In 2014, the band released their debut EP, “Morphine” (self-released), along with the single “Mistakes” and the full-length album “Bsides” under the Uncle Misha label.

In 2015, Elena Polupan departed the group and was replaced by Lisa Dolgikh. That same year, Supernova 1006 released their second LP, “Talons”. At the start of 2016, Anton Korchevsky left the band. Concurrently, the band began a partnership with Werkstatt Recordings, releasing the LP “Talons”, the EP “Ministry”, and singles “Feel” and “We Are Free”.

The album “Unique World” was released in 2017 through Werkstatt Recordings, Sierpien Records, Other Voices Records, and Orbita, available on CD, cassette, reels, and vinyl. Also in 2017, Supernova 1006 collaborated with Gothic Music to re-release “Unique World” on CD and recorded the single “Dope For Human”, which Other Voices Records issued on 7-inch vinyl. The LP “Blackout” came out later that year on Sierpien Records, featuring collaborations with Mr.Kitty, Paradox Obscur, and Kill Your Boyfriend. Alongside The Units, the group also released a remix of the 1979 track “High Pressure Days”. In the summer of 2018, they released the single “Gold” and the EP “Critical Distance”. That year, Supernova 1006 and Liars collaborated on remixes of “New Kind Of Cross – Buzz Kull”.

In 2019, the group started working with Young And Cold Records, releasing the experimental industrial album “Technical Support” on 12″ vinyl. In 2021, Supernova 1006 released the synth-punk album “History Of Supernova 1006” on Sierpien Records, drawing significant inspiration from The Units. From 2021 to 2023, the group was inactive, pausing concert activities while recording and developing new material.

In the summer of 2023, Sofia Merkulova replaced Lisa Dolgikh, and the group announced an upcoming album titled “Chains”, set to be released on October 2, 2023, under the Negative Gain label.

Post-punk/synthwave band, Supernova 1006 recently unveiled their new album, “Chains” via Negative Gain Productions. “Chains” is about the struggle for your happiness, about the struggle for silence and harmony with oneself.

About Supernova 1006

Supernova 1006 came to life in September 2014, through the collaboration of Andrey Yukhovich (on guitar and vocals), Anton Korchevsky (handling bass and synthesizer), and Elena Polupan (managing drum machine and synthesizer). The same year saw them self-releasing their debut EP “Morphine”, alongside the single “Mistakes” and a full-length album titled “Bsides” under the Uncle Misha label.

However, 2015 brought changes to the lineup with Elena exiting the band, making way for Lisa Dolgikh. With fresh energy, Supernova 1006 unveiled their second LP “Talons” that year. But as 2016 rolled in, Anton parted ways with the group. Despite the shift, the band forged a new alliance with Werkstatt Recordings, leading to the release of LP “Talons”, EP “Ministry”, and the singles “Feel” and “We Are Free”.

In 2017, the musical journey continued with the album “Unique World”, a collaborative release with Werkstatt Recordings, Sierpien records, Other Voices records, and Orbita. This album found its way to fans on a variety of formats – CD, cassettes, reels, and vinyl. Later that year, the band explored new horizons with Gothic Music, which saw the re-release of “Unique World” on CD. They also dropped the single “Dope For Human” on a 7-inch vinyl through Other Voices records, followed by the LP “Blackout” on Sierpien Records, featuring contributions from Paradox Obscur and Kill Your Boyfriend.

Keeping the creative momentum going, Supernova 1006, alongside The Units, introduced a remix of the classic 1979 track “High Pressure Days” in a single. The summer of 2018 saw the release of the single “Gold” and the EP “Critical Distance”.

Their collaborative spirit soared again in the same year when they, along with Liars, released remixes of “New Kind Of Cross – Buzz Kull”. 2019 marked the beginning of a new chapter with Young And Cold records, culminating in the release of the experimental industrial album “Technical Support” on 12″ vinyl.

Fast forward to 2021, Supernova 1006 launched the synth-punk album “History Of Supernova 1006” via Sierpien Records, drawing inspiration largely from The Units. While the group took a step back from active performances between 2021 to 2023, they were quietly brewing new material.

As summer 2023 unfolded, Sofia Merkulova replaced Lisa Dolgikh, injecting new life into the band. With renewed vigor, Supernova 1006 announced their upcoming album “Chains”, set to release under the Negative Gain label, marking a new phase in their ever-evolving musical saga.
Background/Info: This new album by British formation Vukovar is the second part of the “Eternity Ends Here”- trilogy. The first chapter “The Collosalist” was released last year.

Content: Vukovar invites the listener to embark for a Dark-Wave driven voyage, mainly accomplished by synth lines. Some songs have an explicit dreamy effect while a few tracks are somewhat harder and more into the Post-Punk style. Some parts of the vocal production feel a bit like lamentations.

+ + + : Vukovar will appeal some 80s nostalgic music lovers. I especially like one of the very few harder cuts entitled “When Rome Falls”. This track reminds me a bit of The Cure while the lyrics were originally written by David Tibet. I also have to mention the dreamy-like “The Great Immured And His Sea Of Love”, which is carried by a low, vibrating bass line.

– – – : I’ve never been a huge fan of Vukovar; this band can’t really touch me, the song remaining unaccomplished and without any single climax. Production-wise I think the mixing could have been better as well.

Conclusion: This new work by Vukovar sounds maybe a bit better than its predecessor, but still not what I expect from an accomplished work.

About Vukovar

Vukovar formed in England in 2014 and issued its debut album “Emperor” on Small Bear Records in 2015, followed by “Voyeurism” in 2016. “Puritan” appeared on the band’s own imprint The Brutalist House in 2017 and “Monument” was released by Trisol in 2018 as a limited 2LP and CD set.

The band’s association with Other Voices Records began with the lathe-cut 7″ “Prurient” in 2019 and continued with “The Colossalist”, the 2020 album the review above refers to as the first chapter of the “Eternity Ends Here” trilogy. Both that record and “The Great Immurement” are dedicated to Simon Morris, who died in 2019.

“The Great Immurement” was released on 23 April 2021. The track “When Rome Falls” was also issued separately in 2021 as a single-sided lathe-cut 7″ on The Brutalist House. David Tibet, whose lyrics that song uses, leads Current 93. Vukovar returned to Other Voices Records in 2022 with “The Body Abdicator”.

Altar De Fey originated in San Francisco in the early eighties as part of the emerging musical form that would come to be known as deathrock. Out of the Zeitgeist flash of 70’s Punk Rock the new sound took the darkest elements of the counter culture into ever deeper, gloomier and more mature territory. If you are into classic Christian Death, 45 Grave, Kommunity FK, Burning Image and son, then Altar De Fey was and probably still is your thing.

The original incarnation of the band passed through a rotating cast of characters centered strongly by the vision and experimental guitar of founding member Kent Cates. Add to that the tribal drumming of Aleph Kali and Butch Mason’s vocals.

Though the band had a strong base of support, no original recordings were ever released and the young members carried on into new musical endeavors. By 1988 Altar De Fey disbanded.

Out now on vinyl via Other Voices Records is “Original Sin – An Anthology of the early Years”, a compilation offering you 11 original Altar De Fey songs recorded between 1984 and 1986. Included are demos, rehearsal records and concert recordings. The material was already released in 2015 via the Russian label Wondervogel Records on cassette in 2015, and on CD via that other Russian label Other Voices Records in 2019. It was however never before released on vinyl until now. Note that a new mastering was applied for this vinyl release, by Martin Bowes in 2019.

The rehearsal songs on this vinyl were recorded at House of De Fey, while the demos were recorded on December 11th 1985 at Dragon Studios, Pacifica in California.

The vinyl set is limited to 250 copies.

Genre/Influences: Electro-Pop, New-Wave, Indie-Pop.

Format: Digital, CD, Vinyl, Cassette.

Background/Info: They/Live is an American project driven by Whitney Mower. The name of the project is taken from the movie “They Live” by John Carpenter. The movie was released during the 80s and this decade also is the main source of inspiration of this project. The album has been accomplished by a real band, Whitney Mower being the front woman. “Ablation” has been released in the US on vinyl (on Born Losers Records) and in Russia on CD and cassette.

Content: “Ablation” sounds like awakening from a voyage with a travel machine and getting back in the midst of the 80s. The front cover of the album looks glam and kitsch, which in a way also stands for the sound of this album. Whitney Mower reminds me a bit of Cindy Lauper while the sound is a mix of Electro-Wave and pure 80s Pop. Some tracks are however a bit more Minimal-driven while you’ll also hear a kind of ballad. Both last tracks are acoustic versions.

+ + + : This album has something of a challenge, but I perfectly imagine this kind of music being played at retro-minded parties and other funny kitsch happenings. They/Live sounds for the funny side of the 80s. I especially like the somewhat Minimal-Pop songs “The Path” and “Story Of Isaac”. Another attention grabber is “Foreigner” for its sexy chorus. Last, but not least Whitney Mower is a talented vocalist.

– – – : This work sounds fun for a while, but rapidly becomes outdated.

Conclusion: Retro-Pop with some kitsch on top!

Best songs: “Story Of Isaac”, “The Path”.

About They/Live

They/Live is the American project of Whitney Mower, who takes the name from John Carpenter’s 1988 film “They Live” and builds her sound around that decade’s synth pop and new wave, alongside the influence of artists such as Kate Bush and Cocteau Twins. Mower fronts the project live with a full band. “Ablation” was released on May 8, 2020, through Born Losers Records, reaching the US on vinyl and Russia on CD and cassette, the release reviewed here.

Genre/Influences: Gothic, Experimental, Abstract.

Format: Digital, CD.

Background/Info: UK formation Vukovar is now active for a couple of years and released late 2020 their eighth album to date. “The Colossalist” is meant as the first chapter of the “Eternity Ends”-trilogy. The work deals with personal dramas and failures.

Content: “The Colossalist” invites the listener to join in for a voyage of 11 tracks. After a rather chaotic debut song the work is progressively evolving into multiple directions. From pure Gothic-driven cuts towards a more Experimental approach (like shown at “The Higher Low), the songs are mixing guitar and electronics. I noticed a few more minimal-driven cuts wherein the atmosphere recovering the composition became more prominent.

+ + + : Vukovar is once more awakening some 80s ghosts, but this work moves further, like exploring different horizons and exorcising new ideas. The atmospheric side of the album is overwhelming, sometimes intimate and even reminiscent of a kind of Cabaret-style. The work stands for diversity, sometimes evoking early rehearsals in a cellar or garage and next being more accomplished with a mature production. One thing is for sure, Vukovar is doing their own thing.

– – – : Some songs are suffering from a lack of production and especially some of the debut songs are a disappointing. You can hear a poorly inspired production of the vocals on “Here Are Lions”.

Conclusion: If this album is meant as the first one of a trilogy, I can only hope the best is yet to come.

Best songs: “A Danse Macabre”, “End Of A Life Delirium”.

About Vukovar

Vukovar is an English band that formed in 2014; per the band’s own Bandcamp notes it “were always dying and reorganized after [ceasing] to exist in 2019.” Discogs lists the band’s chronology from the debut album “Emperor” (2015, Small Bear Records) through “Puritan” (2017, The Brutalist House) and “Monument” (2018, Trisol) to “Cremator” (2019), both released on Other Voices Records.

“The Colossalist” is the band’s eighth album and the first part of a planned “Eternity Ends Here” triptych, dedicated to founding member Simon Morris following his death; the album was engineered by The Brutalist House And The Ghosts In Their Machine and mastered by Phil Reynolds. Vukovar returned to Other Voices Records for the follow-up “The Great Immurement” later in 2021.

Genre/Influences: Electro-Pop, Wave-Pop, New-Wave.

Format: Digital, CD, Vinyl, Cassette.

Background/Info: Korine is an American duo from Philadelphia driven by Morgy Ramone and Try Frye . They last year released their second album “The Night We Raise” on Born Losers Records (US), Data Airlines (France) and Other Voices Records (Russia).

Content: The sound and influences of this band are clearly getting us back in the midst of the 80s. This is pure New-Wave carried by melodic synths and carried by guitar play. The songs perfectly reflect the spirit of the 80s. There are only 8 songs featured, which also reminds me of the typical vinyl-albums from the past.

+ + + : If you’re in search for innovation, you better avoid listening to Korine. This band is clearly devoted and passionate to the 80s New-Wave music. You can hear it in some simple, but essential effects and details awakening old New-Wave ghosts. The main strength of the work is the melodic and carrying side of the choruses. And a good chorus often is the essence of a good song. I especially like the first half of the opus.

– – – : The tracks are pretty similar so a little bit more diversity would be a little extra.

Conclusion: Korine sounds like it was seriously contaminated by the 80s virus, which is for sure a cool and enjoyable sickness.

Best songs: “Fate”, “Cold Heart”, “Cast”.

Format: Digital, CD, Vinyl.

Background/Info: “How’s The View There?” is the debut-album –which rather looks more like a mini-album, by Fritch. The band consists of Will Wilkinson, Stephen Tee, Anna Cotten, B.H Mistry, Achille Dunoyer de Segonzac and Phil Booth. Their names don’t make ring a bell and unfortunately there’s less info available about the background of the band; ‘what began on a laptop in the U.S. and Vietnam found a home in the U.K. and collaborative works’.

Content: The work takes off with a song mixing elements of Dark-Rock and Chanson. The low timbre of voice, and also the song, will appeal for fans of Nick Cave. The album is diversified, but the influences remain. Some passages are more into minimalism, others have been mixed with Eastern-like reverie (cf. “Imperfect Love”) while the title song is accomplished with epic arrangements. The last song makes me think of a piano ballad and has something Bowie-like.

+ + + : Fritch is a cool discovery and an interesting newcomer. The global atmosphere hanging over this work has something ominous, but the songs reveal something fragile. This album makes me think of music for film-noir. It’s emotional, which is mainly due to the use of real instruments. The opening song “Heat On A Leash” sounds brilliant, but I also recommend listening to “Imperfect Love”.

– – – : Fritch is hard to catch and hard to label; the album needs a few listening, but in the end you’ll have to recognize it’s a great piece of music.

Conclusion: Fritch appears to be the perfect match between Dark-Rock and Chanson; an emotional and dreamy voyage.

Best songs: “Heat On A Leash”, “Imperfect Love”, “Fracture so Easy”.

Genre/Influences: Industrial, Cinematographic, Experimental.

Format: Digital, Vinyl, Cassette.

Background/Info: Autopsia doesn’t need no further introduction to Industrial music lovers. They can easily be considered as pioneers in the genre and can look back at an impressive career and discography. This album is a fine selection from songs that were originally composed in between 1982 and 1995. The compilation was originally released in 2011 on Illuminating Technologies as digital and CD format and got a re-release on Other Voices Records on vinyl and cassette.

Content: The style of Autopsia remains a true enigma. There are for sure Industrial influences running throughout the songs while some epic/orchestral arrangements are sometimes reminiscent of the Laibach approach. But there’s much more than simply Industrial, some pieces being more into a true Cinematographic style. You’ll also notice songs with other influences like Ritual, dark-Ambient and pure Experimental.

+ + + : Autopsia deals with ominous sound; there’s always something intriguing emerging from the tracks. But this compilation is also an opportunity to revisit some early work of the band, which already featured a kind of ‘total-concept’ approach. You can hear it’s not just meant as music, but moving towards a greater artistic creation and concept. Most of the tracks have a strong visual appeal, moving from a pure Dark-Ambient nihilism to Horror-Soundtrack. The composition is elaborated and diversified. “The Time Of Pain And Time Of Waiting” originally released in 1990 is a brilliant piece of Cinematographic music moving crescendo to a sonic climax. I also want to mention “Monster And Mad Point”, which is characterized by a desolate sphere.

– – – : I can’t say this album is the best Autopsia work I’ve ever heard although it’s a cool way to get back to the early years of the band.

Conclusion: “Weltuntergang” perfectly summarizes the sound and approach of Autopsia; hard to label and always intriguing.

Best songs: “The Time Of Pain And Time Of Waiting”, “Monster And Mad Point”, “Weltuntergang Theme II”, “Lebensherrgabe”.

Rate: (7½).

KILL YOUR BOYFRIEND has been set up in 2011. The Italian formation went through a few line-up changes and is now driven by the duo Matteo Scarpa – Antonio Angeli. By the end of last year they released their newest album “Killadelica”, which is a dark and powerful mix of Shoegaze, Post-Punk and Psychedelic music, but still exploring Industrial-, Ritual- and Experimental paths. The work reveals an impressive progression and maturity, becoming one of my 2020 favorites. I’d a chat with Matteo and Antonio.

(Courtesy by Inferno Sound Diaries)

Q: KILL YOUR BOYFRIEND has been set up in 2011. How did you come to set up the band and what have been the main facts from the past ten years?

KYB: It all started with the idea of creating a band that could mix the structure of the ‘No-Wave’ songs with Psychedelic-Noise guitars. We were lucky because we found a good chemistry and quickly were able to self-produce our first 6-song EP (September 2011) and started playing live in clubs and festivals around Italy.

It was with our first album “S / T” released by Shyrec in 2013 that we started to be recognized and played over 80 shows; also in other European countries, but mainly in Germany.

2015 was the year of the 10″-split with NEW CANDYS and our second album “The King Is Dead” (Shyrec) produced in collaboration with Luca Giovanardi (JULIE’S HAIRCUT). In the same years we participated to some great festivals as “Musical Zoo” in Brescia, opening for bands like THE KVB and ZOLA JESUS.

From 2016 to 2018 we performed extensively throughout Europe and did a couple of concerts in Russia (Moscow and St. Petersburg). During this time we met bands like PREOCCUPATIONS, ZU, CIVIL CIVIC and many other great artists. Meanwhile we have released our second EP “Ghosts” (2016 – Shyrec) and a 7″-single, “Ulrich” (2017) on the Russian label Other Voices Records.

At the end of 2019 the British label Depths Records released our single “Elizabeth”, which includes a remix of the same song by PREOCCUPATION’s guitarist Danny Christiansen and we played some shows in the UK as well.

The new album “Killadelica” was released on November, 6th, 2020 by the labels Sister9 Recordings (UK), Little Cloud Records (US) and Shryec (ITA).

Q: A few changes happened in the line-up. How does it feel to work as a duo and what makes the chemistry between you both?

KYB: Luckily there’s a great chemistry between both of us; in both songwriting and touring life, but there’re two other different aspects you need to consider. It’s easier to work with just two heads when deciding what is the best move for the band; apart from loading the car it’s better to have more help… do you agree? Getting back to your question, we have the same reasons and we respect each other and therefore, in our opinion, these are the reasons that led us to work this way.

Q: By the end of 2020 you released your new album “Killadelica”. Can you give us more details about the title of the album plus the titles of the songs (which like on previous works are often first names)? What have been the different stages to accomplish this work?

KYB: After choosing the band name -KILL YOUR BOYFRIEND is based on a graphic novel created by Grant Morrison and Philip Bond published by Vertigo-DC Comics, we thought it would be fun to create a list of ‘boyfriends’ to name the songs after. Thus, in the first releases, we tried to transpose the feelings experienced by the victims into music.

Instead for this album we changed our point of view. So we didn’t talk about the emotions felt by the ‘boyfriends’, but by their killers. We started doing extensive research to study all the stories we found about real black widows and more. We have to be honest and admit that some stories are drawn from ancient mythology, movies or even comics.

For the title of the album we wanted to mix the word ‘kill’ with something that could resemble the word ‘Psychedelic’ and honestly it’s also inspired by one of PRIMAL SCREAM’s masterpieces, “Screamadelica”.

Q: I personally consider “Killadelica” as your most mature- and best album to date! There’s such a great balance between guitar play and electronics featuring haunting vocals on top. Can you give us more details about the writing of the songs and the potential sources of inspiration?

KYB: We are really proud of “Killadelica” and thank you for your words about it. To answer to your question, as we said in the previous one, we have done a long research. We chose the stories following empathy. Our main idea was that “Killadelica” should have a kind of roller coaster of different emotions. This is probably why all the songs aren’t that similar to each other, even though they have the same dark and Psychedelic heart.

Q: How do you see yourself as musicians? When do you know a song/album is finished? Do you feel some aspects of the production could have been done a different way when you’re listening to the album right now?

KYB: Due to this pandemic crisis we’re facing, unfortunately it’s not easy to live as musicians or artists in general. We miss the stage and the people we meet on tours. On the other hand, we have a lot of time to work on some new songs and other projects as well.

However, we usually start overproducing each song. Then, following the idea ‘less is more’, we cut all the tracks that give nothing. This is the right moment when we understand that the work is complete. But honestly, it has happened in the past that we would have liked to change something in the final mixes, especially in some of the early songs. Luckily it hasn’t happened with “Killadelica” until now and probably the reason is because we focused the concept immediately before starting to compose the album.

Q: A few new clips have been released. Is there a link between the clips and the lyrical content of the songs and what did you try to express by a clip?

KYB:We like it when the clips reflect the lyrics, but especially the mood of the song and we normally try to follow this idea. The two videos we made for “Elizabeth” and “Jean”, the first two singles taken from “Killadelica”, are based on the female figure shown in two different ways. In the first clip the woman is driven to the madness that led her to commit a murder, in the second the main theme is the suffocation felt by the characters.

Q: What are the further plans and especially ‘post-Corona’?

KYB: We are working on a new video/single taken from “Killadelica” and as we wrote before we are also composing some new songs and working on some new projects.

Let’s just hope this pandemic period ends soon and, of course, we can’t wait to get back on tour. Read the review of ‘Killadelica’.

Genre/Influences: Electro-wave.

Format: Digital, Cassette.

Background/Info: Tristán B is a
Mexican solo-project driven by ‘Antonio R.’ The music is driven by good-old synth
influences from the 80s. “Porcelain” was already released several months ago
now (2019) and features six songs. The cassette edit of the work has been
strictly limited to 50 copies.

Content: The songs on
“Porcelain” indeed smell like the good-old synth-pop music from the 80s. I
don’t want to compare the project with famous artists, but some melody lines
remind me a bit of Tears For Fears. The melodic touch is quite present all the
work long, but especially the last cut (cf. “Don’t Let Me Go”) is worthy of
examination for its typical analogue resonation. The vocals have been sung in
English and are rather soft and clear.

+ + + : I like the reverie
and melody emerging from this work. The low bass lines are constantly evoking
the 80s sound formula. But the approach of Tristán B goes a step further than
only inspired by 80s synth-music. There also is a more personal and
contemporary touch on top.

– – – : The songs are cool
and easy listening, but the tracklist is missing a truly potential hit.

Conclusion: Tristán B is an interesting discovery from the
Other Voices Records roster. If you’re into melodic 80s electro-pop with a dark
touch on top, this record will catch your attention.

Best songs: “Don’t Let Me Go”,
“City Rain”.

Genre/Influences: Electro-wave,
minimal-pop.

Format: Digital, CD, Vinyl,
Cassette.

Background/Info: No New Dawn is a
new name hailing from Detroit (USA). “Double Dream” is the solo-project’s debut
album, which is now available in all imaginary formats.

Content: “Double Dream” takes us back to the inspiring
sonic realms of 80s electronic music. The sound treatments, melodies and even
drum sounds are instantly evoking the magic of the early synth years. The
vocals have been mixed in the background and rather sound as an extra effect on
top of the music. The album features 7 songs so in the end it rather looks as a
mini-album instead of a real full length.

+ + + : The retro approach
of the work makes it magic! No New Dawn awakens the good-old 80s electronic
demons. I can’t compare the album to any other formation although you can
easily recognize the 80s influences. The production of the vocals is an
interesting aspect and here again reminding the sterile way of singing used by
numerous 80s artists.

– – – : There’s not a lot of diversity between the
songs. This kind of production brings no real surprise, but innovation isn’t
clearly the main focus here. I however regret the work only features 7 songs.

Conclusion: No New Dawn is not
exactly what I would call a ‘hot’ newcomer, but “Double Dream” is an
interesting record revealing some potential. So I’m wondering how this project
will evolve.

Best songs: “One Fading Into
Light”, “F.A.D.
(Flight of the Angel of Destruction)”, “The Path”.

Genre/Influences: Post-Punk,
death-rock.

Format: Digital, CD, Vinyl,
Box (CD + LP).

Background/Info: Originally from San
Francisco (USA) Altar De Fey saw the light of day in the early 80s. “Original
Sin” is meant as an anthology of the band’s early years featuring live- and
rehearsal songs. Originally released in 2015 on cassette by Wondervogel Records
(Russia) the album has been re-released late 2019 by Other Voices Records.

Content: The work features
11 songs that have all been recorded and/or performed in 1985 and 1986. I
wasn’t at all familiar with Altar De Rey and discovered a typical early 80s
post-punk sound recorded with rudimentary equipment. Some songs remain
instrumental edits while the live takes vaguely bring the stage spirit to life.

+ + + : I think it’s cool
for the fans of the band to get this album now available on CD and vinyl. The
guitar and global song structures are definitely 80s like and will appeal to
punk lovers.

– – – : I’m not convinced
at all by this recording. Sometimes it’s cool and even great to discover some
forgotten little treasures from the past, but this recording is really too bad
to be true. It’s not only about the poor sound quality from the mix and recording,
but the songs can’t convince me at any single moment. They simply sound poorly
inspired and unaccomplished.

Conclusion: This is an album
for the die-hard fans or some 80s collectors, but absolutely not essential to
me!

About Altar De Fey

Altar De Fey formed in San Francisco in the early 1980s as part of the city’s deathrock scene, sharing bills with Christian Death and 45 Grave at venues including Mabuhay Gardens. The band’s catalogue includes the “1986 Demos” and “I See Demons” compilations (2013), “1975” and “Echoes In The Corridor” (2016), a self-titled album (2017), “The Insatiable Desire…For More” (2019) and “And May Love Conquer All” (2020).

In April 2021, Side-Line reported a vinyl release for the same anthology recordings covered by “Original Sin”.

“Desertland” is the all new album for Shadoworld, which is actually the duo consisting of Roberto Del Vecchio and Old Boy aka Claudio Carluccio. Especially Roberto Del Vecchio will ring a bell, he is an Italian composer since 1994 and founded projects such as Gothica (Cold Meat Industry), The Last Hour (Other Voices Records / Seventh Crow Records) and Les Jumeaux Discordants (Athanor Records). Claudio Carluccio from his side is an Italian multi-instrumentalist he worked with various musicians.

Shadoworld debuted in 2017 with a self titled album on The White Room Netlabel, followed by the “Silver Rain” in 2018.

On “Desertland” you can expect dark folk with a touch of western style and modern electronica, combined with neo-classical. The band’s label describes it as music that “in some parts reminds of Nick Cave, Death in June, Depeche Mode, Johnny Cash, Ennio Morricone, Mark Lanegan.”

Genre/Influences: Dark-wave, gothic,
rock-gothic.

Background/Info: Hailing from the
Northern part of England, Vukovar is active since 2014 and has already released
an impressive number of productions. After their last year released album
“Monument” (on vinyl) on Trisol, they now signed to Other Voices Records. The
new work is also available as vinyl format.

Content: Vukovar has this
nostalgic sound getting us back to the 80s. But the work is not an emulation,
but a mix between 80s reminiscences and later gothic music. The rhythms are
rather slow and linear. Some vocal parts have something sensual and half-spoken
like. The tracks have been achieved with electronic arrangements while the last
part of the album moves deeper into rock-goth fields. Notice by the way
there’re 3 cover versions featured at this album including a song originally
written by Genesis P. Orridge.

+ + + : The best part of
the album comes just in the midst of the tracklist. “Prurient” and “Love’s
Provocation” both are noticeable cuts for their cold sensuality emerging from
the vocals and the slow rhythm. I also like certain atmospheric layer hanging
over the songs, which is reinforcing the dark format of the work.

– – – : The album has
something versatile like a band, which is still in search of a personal sound
identity. I think they could better focalize on one specific aspect to
elaborate it next.

Conclusion: “Cremator” is a
pleasant gothic work without absolute highlights, but also without worst songs.

Best songs: “Prurient”, “Love’s
Provocation”, “Dive For Your Memory”.

About Vukovar

Vukovar is an English band that formed in 2014; per the band’s own Bandcamp notes it “were always dying and reorganized after [ceasing] to exist in 2019.” Discogs lists the group’s chronology from the debut album “Emperor” (2015, Small Bear Records) through “Puritan” (2017, The Brutalist House) and “Monument” (2018, Trisol) to “Cremator” (2019, Other Voices Records). Vukovar continued on Other Voices Records with “The Colossalist” (2021) and “The Great Immurement” (2021).

Genre/Influences: EBM, wave-pop.

Background/Info: Belgian brothers
Jean-Marc and Pierre Pauly are back on track releasing their first live album
ever. The tracklist features a fine selection of some ‘classical’ songs plus 5
new songs taken from their upcoming new album. The songs have been reworked
with the help of good-old mate Patrick Codenys (Front 242, Under Viewer, Male
Or Female) and were recorded during a gig in Frankfurt (Germany).

Content: “Life” is exactly what
you might expect from a live performance; a mix of hits and new material. You
don’t really feel there’s an important hiatus of time between some classical
songs and the new ones. Parade Ground still has this good-old EBM and wave-pop
influence, which together with the timbre of voice, make the particularity of
the band.

+ + + : A live album remains an
item for the die-hard fans, but it also is an opportunity to get an idea about
the spirit a band can create on stage. That’s an aspect that comes through at
this work where you’ll notice the interaction between the band and the
audience. It also is an opportunity to (re)discover the retro style of Parade
Ground characterized by the typical string parts and the EBM touch. Classical
songs/hits such as “Gold Rush” and “Strange World”. Among the new songs I
especially recommend “Stand”, which appears to be one of the band’s hardest
songs ever.

– – – : I’m still convinced there
could be more passion in the vocals.

Conclusion: Parade Ground is part of
the early EBM story, but the band is still active, creative and successful
today.

Best songs: “Stand”, “Gold Rush”,
“Strange World”.

Rate: (7).

Parade Ground was founded in 1981 by Belgian brothers Jean-Marc and Pierre Pauly. Their first single, “Moan On The Sly,” appeared in 1983, during an early run of releases that moved from icy coldwave toward a harder EBM sound. Debut album “Cut Up” followed in 1988 on Play It Again Sam; a second album, “Rosary,” did not arrive until 2007, on Sleep Walking Records. Front 242’s Daniel B. and Patrick Codenys, alongside Wire’s Colin Newman, produced and added instruments to the band’s archival single collection. “Life,” the live album reviewed here, reworks the catalogue with Codenys’s help and was recorded during a Frankfurt show; weeks later the Pauly brothers discussed their plans in a Side-Line Click Interview.

Content: Bill & Murray is a band operating from Tel-Aviv (Israel), which was originally set up as a duo by David Blau (guitar, vocals) and Stella Gotshtein (keyboard, vocals). The line-up was then reinforced by Ran Jacobovitz (drums).

“A New Kind Of High” is their debut full length revealing a fusion between elements of electro-pop, rock and shoegaze. All these influences together are quite compact and sometimes reminding me of dream-pop formations active on the Saint Marie Records roster. I don’t really want to compare this band to another, but I can imagine it’s the kind of sound that will appeal to lovers of Ladytron.

There’s a similar fragile and sexy timbre of voice while the fuzzy guitar parts and electro-pop arrangements are a bit in the line of bands like Ladytron, Fischerspooner and co. But Bill & Murray are more diverse, covering many influences.

The debut took me by surprise, revealing fascinating and accomplished compositions. The somewhat ballad-rock like opener “Simplicity” is a solid teaser while the harder “New Kind Of High” and the more into shoegaze exploring “Bored” are all fascinating compositions.

The next few cuts move into this subtle dream-pop approach, which reaches its climax on “Rabbit Hole”. The last cuts hold on to the dreamy format of this work, but they’re also well-crafted songs revealing a great sonic taste of this formation.

I’m just missing an absolute hit, which would have been an embellishment for this cool work. Notice by the way that the album only features 8 songs which is rather short.

Conclusion: Bill & Murray is an interesting discovery dealing with a fresh eclectic pop sound.

Best songs: “Bored”, “New Kind Of High”, “Rabbit Hole”, “Something To Fear”.

Content: AND’ Ckrystall is a French band that was set up during the early 80s by Érick Moncollin. The band never gained a big international recognition although they released some interesting electro-wave music.

“Jazz’ Mad” was originally released in 1982 as a vinyl featuring 6 songs. It was the debut release of AND’ Ckrystaéll. This album re-released by several labels like Dark Entries (2012) and Other Voices Records (2013), which released it as a limited cassette format. “Jazz’ Mad Plus” has now been released again, but for the very first time as a CD while the ‘plus’ added to the title refers to 6 extra songs featured on the disc.

If you never heard the 6 original songs, you’ll be pleased to discover a typical old-school minded electro composition, which clearly reflects all the influences of the early 80s. “Cocaina Vitamina” is a funny title for a great piece of music carried by a strong melodic element. This work is a move back to the magic sound of analogue synthesizers. It’s pure vintage electronic music creation revealing this spooky-like synth sounds and typical sound of a rhythm box.

Some songs remained instrumentals while others have were sung with this typical juicy French accent (cf. “Tam Tam Samba”). The work is quite elaborated and I here especially refer to the accomplished “Dragons’ Caravan / Spanik Elektronik”. The song also reveals a few space-like sound treatments while there also is a vague psychedelic flavor hanging over “Haschisch T’Es Pas Cap!”.

The main essence of the bonus songs reveals 3 alternative versions of the main song “Cocaina Vitamina”. The “Trance Version” is pretty cool for the injection of a big kick, making this song more danceable and contemporary.

We also get a live song version of “Puckies Power” and 2 more songs, which you’ll only find on the CD format. I recommend the funny-like “Deutsch Napalm” opening with a passage of the German hymn while moving on into another cool 80s electro composition.

Conclusion: This album definitely deserved to get released on CD format while the bonus tracks made it even more interesting for all of those who already had the original release or some of the re-releases. This is great 80s electronic-pop music.

Best songs: “Cocaina Vitamina”, “Pour L’Amour D’Un Cygne / Puckies Power”, “Haschisch T’Es Pas Cap!”.

Rate: (DP:7½)DP.
