Genre/Influences: Dark-Wave, Gothic, Post-Punk, Shoegaze.

Format: Digital, CD, Cassette.

Background/Info: Vlimmer is the main project of German musician and label owner Alexander Leonard Donat. After having released a unique series of 18 (!) EP’s in between 2015 and 2020 he since then released two albums. “Zerschöpfung” is Vlimmer’s third full length featuring nine songs about dark, existential, themes.

Content: The concept sounds dark and the album takes off this way as well. After a poignant, Gothic-like intro cut Vlimmer explores the darkest corners of Dark-Wave music. The album moves in a similar way although not always featuring a similar darkness. Guitar and electronics parts create a melodic but tormented sphere which might remind you of the 8os spirit. All songs are still sung in German.

+ + + : The debut part of the album sounds like Vlimmer at its best. I especially enjoy the tortured atmosphere emerging at “Flurfall”. You literally feel a kind of painful expression there. Other tracks like “Platzwart” are more melodic although still exploring the dark side of life. “Fatalideal” sounds pure 80s like and even evokes the imaginary hybrid between X Mal Deutschland and Cocteau Twins.

– – – : Speaking for myself I regret the album doesn’t sound as dark as “Flurfall” which sounds to me as a true referential song for this artist.

Conclusion: This is probably my favorite Vlimmer-album thus far which sounds as a production for dark souls.

Best songs: “Flurfall”, “Platzwart”, “Fatalideal”, “Losigkeit”, “Austrocknung”.

Rate: 8.

Artist: www.facebook.com/VlimmerMusic

Out now is the 3rd Vlimmer album, “Zerschöpfung”, the title is a blend of the German words for “exhaustion” and “destruction”.

On “Zerschöpfung” the listeners follow the Berlin-based darkgaze band on a journey through the depths of exhaustion, destruction, and identity crisis; an emotionally charged exploration of the human psyche. Musically you will hear that Vlimmer weaves together darkwave, post-punk, shoegaze and new wave spiced with tribal drums.

A lot has happened since Alexander Leonard Donat started the shoegaze/darkwave project Vlimmer. After completing an 18-EP series (2015-2020) the music went into a post-punk direction which led to the debut album, “Nebenkörper” (2021) waving goodbye to the 80s inspired synths and adding industrial and noise rock to the bill. A year later, the Berlin producer released the follow-up album, “Menschenleere” (2022), including a more catchy and dancefloor-related style.

Here’s the album which is also out on CD (incl. also a limited magnetic CD box) and as a limited edition cassette.

Genre/Influences: Dark-Wave, Wave-Pop.

Format: Digital, CD, Cassette.

Background/Info: Alexander Leonard Donat has accomplished an impressive number of works under the Vlimmer moniker during the past years. He first released the massive 18-part EP-series in between 2015 and 2020 while he unleashed the debut album “Nebenkörper” in 2021. This new opus was released by the end of 2022 and features eleven new songs.

Content: Vlimmer remains faithful to its roots and influences -which are mainly driven by Dark-Wave music and German vocals, but “Menschenleere” sounds more diversified. There are a few more elements mixed in the writing which are globally speaking more Electronic. Other passages are reminding me legendary bands from the 4AD roster.

+ + + : Alexander Donat clearly is an accomplished musician. The songs are well-crafted and elaborated. The album features noticeable melody lines but I also enjoyed icier sound treatments and bombastic arrangements. The songs have been recovered with a very explicit, dark, atmosphere. Last but not least this artist also is a passionate vocalist.

– – – : The album is missing a bit more power which makes the difference with the debut album.

Conclusion: Vlimmer remains an extremely prolific artist however never totally repeating himself.

Best songs: “Erdgeruch”, “Fatigo”, “Menschenleere”.

Rate: 7.

Artist: www.facebook.com/VlimmerMusic

There is a new Vlimmer 2-track single uit called “Noposition/1979” via the German label Blackjack Illuminist Records. “Noposition” is the third single from Vlimmer’s forthcoming sophomore album, titled “Noposition” (out 4 November), in which Alexander Leonard Donat addresses the breakdown of communication and what he refers to as the ‘sabotage‘ of serious discussion of real issues in the age of social media.

Pointing the proverbial fingers at social media and its proliferation of disrespectful and intolerant points of view, he explains further: “At the heart of the song is the repeated question of why someone doesn’t see that we are all the same as human beings, no matter what gender we are, where we come from or what we look like.” As a result, “Noposition” ostensibly is a statement of support for “people who don’t fit the traditional mold.”

The single is also out as a physical 2-track CD-r single which can be ordered on Bandcamp.

On the B-side Vlimmer covers The Smashing Pumpkins classic, “1979”, turning it into a darkwave track.

Vlimmer has undergone a considerable transformation since its inception in 2015, beginning as an atmospherical darkwave band and eventually morphing into the one-man project of Berlin-based artist Alexander Leonard Donat, infusing elements of post-punk, industrial, goth, and synthpop. The band also got rightfully picked up for our 2021 released “Post-Punk (Genesis)” free download compilation with the track “Euphorie”.

Format: Digital, CD, Cassette.

Background/Info: After the promising debut EP “The World I Will Leave”Alexander Leonard Donat (Vlimmer, Fir Cone Children ao) is back on track unleashing Assassun’s debut full length album.

Content: “Sunset Skull” moves on from where the EP stopped. It’s a raw, Electronic composition finding inspiration in the 80s Electro-Wave. There’re spooky tunes hanging over the work. Some bass lines are driven by EBM inspiration. The vocals wete sung in English.

+ + + : The album confirms the potential of the debut EP. Donat is not only a prolific artist but also a true creative mind. This project has something retro-like and yet it has something very personal-like. I like the raw, icy sound treatments while other tones remind me a bit of the good-old Theremin. Alexander Donat also is a talented vocalist who performs in a passionate way. There are multiple attention grabbers at this work but I especially want to mention “Over Again”. “Your Scheme?” is another noticeable cut with some Fad Gadget elements on top.

– – – : Alexander Donat avoids composing long tracks. That’s sometimes a pity, especially when you’re listening to great songs.

Conclusion: Assassun is an Electronic project with a true potential. This is an interesting and personal retro-styled production.

Best songs: “Over Again”, “Your Scheme?”, “Burial Shroud”, “Hook To The Chin”, “Achilles Tendon”.

Rate: 8.

Format: Digital, CD.

Background/Info: German artist and label owner Alexander Leonard Donat has launched a new project. Next to his involvement with Vlimmer, Fir Cone Children ao he now strikes back with the debut EP of Assassun. The four tracks are inspired by ‘irrational, long-suffered emotions’.

Content: Sound-wise Assassun clearly sounds like a new experience, which is totally Electro-driven. The common element with Donat’s main project Vlimmer is the 80s spirit running through the work. The sounds have something metallic while the leads create a spooky and sometimes psychedelic touch. All songs have been sung in English.

+ + + : Alexander Donat took me by surprise. He’s not only an extremely prolific DIY artist, but still a true creative mind. Assassun reveals another side of the musician, but still an alluring work carried by impressive, overwhelming blasts and low resonating bass lines. The third song (cf. “The Art Of Ignorance”) is my personal favorite for its club-friendly approach. This song is a great danceable piece of music driven by aggressive sequences and a harder kick. I also have to say a word about the powerful and charismatic vocals of the artist.

– – – : My only regret is that the songs are pretty short, but that’s another connection with 80s music.

Conclusion: This is a great debut EP and I’m really looking forward to discovering the album from Assassun.

Best songs: “The Art Of Ignorance”, “The World I Will Leave”.

Out via Blackjack Illuminist Records, a Berlin based label, is the debut EP from the darkwave act Assassun. The 4-track release “The World I Will Leave” is also out as a MCD in a limited edition and the first 15 copies of the CD are hand-numbered and come with two additional limited edition colored artwork inlay cards.

Behind the Assassun project we find Alexander Leonard Donat who is also the head of Blackjack Illuminist Records. Other projects he is involved include the darkwave/post-punk act Vlimmer, the dreampunk act Fir Cone Children, the synthwave/post-punk act Distance Dealer, the indie-rock act Leonard Las Vegas, the arabian darksynth act Feverdreamt, the dark ambient neoclassical act Leonard Donat and the fuzz ambient drone act Infravoids. A whole lot of acts that is, oh and additionally he was also a member of the disbanded electro-clash hardcore band Jet Pilot and ambient postrockers Flight Recorder.

A brand new project that needs to be checked out! Below are the visuals from the CD version of the MCD.

Out now is the 2nd single for Berlin-based artist Vlimmer. The 2-track single comes prior to Vlimmer’s debut album “Nebenkörper” which is coming out on september 24 and features the the atmospherical industrial track “Meter” and the drum packed synthwave track “Kartenwarten”.

The single comes after 18 (!) EPs realised between 2015 and 2020.

For the debut album “Nebenkörper” Alexander Leonard Donat offers a departure from the atmospheric post-punk/goth/electronics adding tribal drums, a more aggressive way of singing (and screaming) and distorted synthesizers.

Vlimmer is the sonic brainchild of German musician, producer, label owner, visual artist and book author Alexander Leonard Donat. He’s involved with numerous projects, but Vlimmer definitely is a special one. By the end of 2020 he released the final chapter of an impressive eighteen EP-series. It took him five years to achieve this unique concept, which has been released on his own label Blackjack Illuminist Records. The songs are quite diversified, but often influenced by Shoegaze, Dark-Pop, Dark-Wave and related genres.

(Courtesy by Inferno Sound Diaries)

Q: Can you briefly tell us how you got involved with music and how did you come to set up Vlimmer? What have been the main influences and references when setting up Vlimmer?

Alexander: I’ve been playing different kinds of instruments since the age of four. I started with classical music and the violin, a little later I went on playing the piano and even tried out handling the trumpet. I’m in the third generation of a musical family, but the first one who makes Rock/Electronic music. Additionally, I’m the first one not doing it on a professional basis. My dad is a classical pianist and a university teacher, my grandfather was one of the most famous pianists in the GDR and didn’t do anything else besides giving concerts all over Germany and the whole planet.

Like them, and like probably every passionate musician at some point I thought about making music for a living. I tried and I failed with my first projects and bands. Vlimmer was a reaction to that very attempt. In 2015 I no longer tried to involve anything in my music that would please an audience, I simply made something that was 100% the music I wanted to make: a dark and bleak version of Shoegaze. Honestly, I didn’t have any clear references, only a few random ones like Dirty Beaches and Belong maybe, rather unknown Lo-Fi and Ambient/Drone-based bands. I started with Vlimmer making this kind of music because I couldn’t find anything like that anywhere. It’s as simple as that.

Q: Back in 2015 you started with a rather ambitious project, which was to release 18 (!) EP’s. How the hell did you get this idea, which is absolutely unique and what did you’ve in mind? Was there a kind of deadline?

Alexander: When I officially released the first two parts of the EP-series I had already recorded five ones. It was an incredibly productive phase where the songs didn’t stop coming, it was as if I just needed a synthesizer, my guitar pedals and a microphone in front of me to create songs that were basically writing themselves. Believe me or not, in the beginning I never planned to release any of the material, but then I thought, ‘What the heck, you have this DIY record label and there are not even a handful of bands on it, just release this. Even if nobody is listening, it will at least look like you have a real record label at hand. You have nothing to lose’.

It was also pretty easy to come up with lyrics, I simply used a book I had written (in German) a couple of years before. Guess how many chapters it has? Announcing an 18-EP series with a completely new project, not knowing if anyone was remotely interested in it may have looked extremely optimistic –and a little stupid, too. But seriously, I absolutely felt capable of doing this, right from the start.

At first I wanted to prove it to myself, but then I did it to shut the people up who thought this series couldn’t be done. The start was marvelous, people were listening immediately; out of nowhere, I suddenly had more listeners than I had in the entire 10 years before that. This, of course, was extremely motivating and gave me an extra push. There was no deadline for when to finish the series, I only knew I didn’t want it to take more than five years, which meant I had two definite release dates per year where I released either one or two EP’s at the same time.

Q: Each EP features 5 different songs, which means a total amount of 90 (!) songs. Was there a specific reason why you released 5 songs for each EP and 18 EP’s? Is there a kind of concept behind this project and what are your favorite songs and releases?

Alexander: There is a very clear concept behind this EP series. It tells the story of a young man getting lost between reality and his increasingly delusional mind. The motif is rather classical: the individual that feels alienated among people, looking for a purpose in life and a place in society. However, furthermore, I involved time travels, disturbing events that blend real life with imagination, murder, and a rather hopeless ending, which leads right back to the start of everything. I like to see it as a Dark-Ambient existential narrative. In order to tell the narrative a certain number of songs was necessary, and 5 felt about right and manageable.

Having thought about this question of a favorite EP before, I still don’t have a definite one I like the most. I honestly enjoy listening to them all and wouldn’t change a thing. For the listeners I would recommend starting with 12, 13, 14 and head on to 18 and 10 to get an impression of ‘the later’, more dark Shoegaze/Dark-Electro/Dark-Pop/Post-Punk Vlimmer. In the beginning it was bleaker, noisier, more Lo-Fi, more Dark-Wave, Krautrock and Shoegaze. Of the ‘early’ Vlimmer I recommend starting with 1, 6 and 8. My top 5 songs are probably “Lebenswert” (from 16), “Leben” (11), “Gesellschaftsrücken” (13), “Sonnenschwarz” (7) and “Krakenkombat” (12), but this constantly changes.

Q: Composing and recording 90 songs in between 2015 and 2020 definitely requests a huge discipline, but still a constant creativity. How did you manage both aspects and what has been your way of working?

Alexander: That’s as mysterious as it is pure coincidence. First of all, I listen to a lot of music from very different genres, from Indie-Rock to Dark-Ambient to Psychedelic Garage-Rock to Black-Metal and Post-Hardcore, you name it. There’s music for every mood and emotion in my life, which means that I also make rather positive and bright music. Sure, they all transport an emotional, melancholic aspect, but there’s a huge difference between Vlimmer and, let’s say, my Dream-Punk/Indie-Rock project Fir Cone Children.

Switching between these moods it’s easy to stay creative because I’m not focused on just one thing. If I only had one project I think wouldn’t be as productive. Luckily, I have a handful of other projects besides Vlimmer and they all help me to balance it out and stay focused. Once I’m ‘back’ from being busy with one project, I’m usually super hungry for one my other projects. Also, I don’t need much sleep, it’s four and a half hours on average, which means I can use half of the night for writing and recording new music.

Q: You’re also running Blackjack Illuminist Records. So I would like to get your opinion about releasing EPs versus albums; especially because I hear label owners affirming albums will progressively disappear because of streaming platforms?

Alexander: I hate to admit it, but it seems like the majority of today’s listeners can only focus on singles, which is something I can see in the Spotify statistics of most of my label’s bands. So, it’s more like albums and EP’s versus singles rather than albums versus EP’s for me. Personally, I will always favor an album, or if necessary an EP over a single. As a label owner focusing on physical releases I will, of course, release singles, but always prior to a full-length on CD, tape or vinyl. This is my number one passion. If I were to focus on digital-only releases, I could as well shut down my label. Not gonna happen, not as long as I have all my senses.

Luckily, so far, the labels I buy records from are still around and don’t seem like disappearing in the next years. But in 20 years of time I wouldn’t be surprised if the number of labels which release physical media were down to 40%. But this would be due to generations of music listeners slowly dying out – listeners who like to put on vinyl records or play CDs and tapes on their stereo. It’s somehow sad, but it’s the natural course of things, and I totally accept this.

Q: Now you’ve finally accomplished the 18 EPs series, what will be the next step and further plans for Vlimmer?

Alexander: Thanks for asking, at the moment I’m finishing up the songs for the first Vlimmer-album, which will be released in Autumn. With the EP-series finished, I made a clear cut and started working on a new sound design and style working with new equipment. All of the synthesizers I used in the past five years are, kind of, banned for me, I didn’t even use them once. It’s still Vlimmer, but it’s less Pop, less Post-Punk, less Indie, and instead more tribal drums, more darkness and density, more distortion, more aggression. Instead of an 80s vibe these new songs have a contemporary aim. And hey, I’m extremely excited as it looks like there will be a vinyl version being released on a label I very much love. On Blackjack Illuminist, of course, I’m going to release the CD and tape version, as usual.

Genre/Influences: Electro-wave, guitar-wave.

Background/Info: Here is the fourteenth chapter in the EP-series set up
by Alexander Leonard Donat aka Vlimmer.

Content: Every EP in the Vlimmer series reveals something
different. The previous EP was driven by electro-wave music while this new work
is characterized by guitar-wave mixed with electronic arrangements. Some
passages are pretty evasive, but the 80s influence remains constant. The lyrics
are once again sung in Donat’s Mother tongue.

+ + + : If you’re into the darkness of the 80s
cold/electro-wave music this “XIIII”-th edition is definitely something for
you. I like the global approach, but especially the fact every new EP can’t be
compared to its predecessor.

– – – : The songs are easily listening pieces, but I’m missing
high lights in this work. I didn’t experience “XIIII” as the most inspired work
from the series.

Conclusion: Vlimmer has four more EP’s to go to achieve the
series, but this is not the one I’ll keep in mind.

Best
songs: “Klavierbeton”,
“Kaskatoner”.

Rate:

Background/Info: Vlimmer is the main project of German artist and label
owner Alexander Leonard Donat. He started in 2015 with an 18-EP
series. Chapter “XIII” reveals five new songs.

Content: Vlimmer is a kind of sonic chameleon, which is
experimenting with different influences. “XIII” is mixing 80s electro-wave
together with minimal sound treatments and a dark-pop touch on top of some
songs. The vocals are all in German.

+ + + : I like the 80s flavor running through this work, which
I personally consider as one of the best I’ve heard. The icy atmosphere and
minimal sound arrangements create this cool retro touch. I also want to mention
each EP features 5 exclusive cuts.

– – – : Two from the five songs couldn’t totally convince
me.

Conclusion: This EP is probably one of the most recommended one to
discover Vlimmer.

Best
songs: “Übertraum”,
“Gesellschaftsrücken”, “Kontakt”.

Rate: (7½).

Genre/Influences:

Background/Info:
Feverdreamt
is one of the numerous projects set up by Alexander Leonard Donat. He’s mainly
recognized for his work under the Vlimmer moniker, but he’s also running the
label Blackjack Illuminist. “Melantant” is the second album from Feverdreamt
and has been inspired by a pure dystopian concept.

Content:
The
album is totally unique. It’s not really possible to define the style of music,
but it clearly brings different influences together with on top a rather
theatrical way of singing. It sometimes makes me think of the male version of
Nina Hagen singing. Music-wise the
tracks are driven by slow cadences or broken rhythms, the work have something
minimal featuring cold electronic treatments.
But I also noticed a kind of cabaret-approach and even a few songs in
the final part reminding me of Von Magnet.

+
+ + : The least I can say is that this is for sure the most original project
and record I’ve been invited to hear by Alexander Leonard Donat. The global
sound approach is worthy of examination and pretty original as well. I prefer
some of the tracks in the last part of the work and especially refer to “Badj
Zachfan”, “Fon Teyn La” and “A Yun”. The particular way of singing really
matches with the creative sound approach.

–
– – : I noticed a few cuts, which are a bit too experimental-minded for my
taste (like “Saeuk”).

Conclusion:
Feverdreamt
resulted from a real creative process and makes me think of music, which would
be perfectly fitting to some special live performances.

Best
songs: to “Badj Zachfan”, “Fon Teyn La”, “A Yun”, “Parsque”.

Alexander Leonard Donat brings us five more new songs

Content: I now have already heard several EP’s from this series and I’ve to say that I now easily recognize the ‘Vlimmer-sound’. There always is a solid 80s connotation, which this time is mixing elements of electro-pop, fuzzy guitar parts and a more atmospheric approach. The songs are once again sung in German.

+ + + : The influences remain the same-old and getting the listener back to the 80s legacy. But Vlimmer adds a personal touch on top, which at “XII” sounds maybe colder than other releases. I get the impression the production is progressively evolving towards a darker/colder style, which I like. I also like the more cold-wave sounding “Zerschmetterung” for the somewhat shoegaze-like guitar play.

– – – : No real hit –here again, on this new EP, but fully enjoyable cuts. The EP-series is ambitious and original, but I also hope that we one day will get a full length album and why not a kind of ‘best of’ from this series.

Conclusion: If you like 80s electro-wave you definitely have to discover Vlimmer, which remains an interesting formation in this music genre with an extra and personal touch on top.

Best songs: “Zerschmetterung”, “Krakenkombat”.

The goal remains to release 18 EP’s.

Content: The sound of Vlimmer remains driven by good-old 80s influences and German vocals. Sometimes a bit experimental and often minimal-like this new 5-track EP remains rather faithful to the sound of the artist. Some passages are maybe a little bit darker and even appealing for a gothic audience.

+ + + : I especially enjoyed the vocals’ production while I remain seduced by the electronic minimalism of the composition. The retro-like influence is recognizable, but still has something personal making the Vlimmer-sound.

– – – : It’s an aspect I’ve already evoked, but Vlimmer is missing ‘that’ song –or call it ‘hit’, that might catch the attention of a wider audience.

Conclusion: “XI” is an interesting work in the Vlimmer-series; it has something refreshing and still old-school driven like the fusion between past and present.

Best songs: “Wärme”, “Leben”, “Regen”.

Rate: (7).

Genre/Influences: Electro/rock-pop.

Background/Info: Alexander Leonard Donat
and Thomas Schernikau met a few years ago now. They’re based in Berlin and
released their debut work by the end of 2018. Notice by the way the album is
also available as a very limited cassette release.

Content: “Bias” is mixing
different influences, but always comes back to pop music. It mainly sounds
electronic, but you also can hear some indie-rock/pop elements emerging at some
songs. The link with rock music comes from the band-feeling. Most of the songs
are rather quiet, but a few cuts in the end are more punchy and even hypnotic.

+ + + : There are some cool
electronic treatments running through this work. I personally prefer the more
hitting “Berghain”. In a totally different style “Tongue To Machine” has
something delicate and soundtrack-like. A last song I want to mention is “Get
Away” for its impressive guitar apotheosis. This track also has something
punkish I like.

– – – : “Bias” is quite
diversified and I think it rather reveals a band in search of sound identity.
Several songs need a bit more accomplishment, but especially some extra power.

Conclusion: The debut album of Whole
features some interesting ideas, but they now have to get a bit more
elaborated.

Best songs: “Berghain”, “Tongue Machine”, “Get away”.

Rate: (6).
