“Midnight Hearts” is the debut album from American band Feyleux. Previously, they released a single, both tracks of which are included on this album. Feyleux draws heavily on ’80s Wave-Pop and Dark-Wave influences, reviving them in a dreamy, atmospheric style. While most tracks lean towards an Electro sound, there are moments where guitars subtly come into play. The majority of the songs feature a female lead vocalist, but some tracks offer a male-female vocal duo. My favorite part of the album leans into a harder, darker sound, though the overall tracklist often feels like it lacks a strong climax. The album showcases good ideas but could benefit from further development. (Rating:6½).

“Black Magic” is the third album by Italian Dark-Wave/Post-Punk band They Die. As with their previous works, their sound is characterized by a bleak and dark atmosphere, reminiscent of bands like The Sisters Of Mercy and Suspiria. The album features a perfect blend of somber guitar riffs and melodic synth arrangements, creating a hauntingly beautiful soundscape. The vocals are deep and possessed, adding to the overall sense of despair. This album includes several standout tracks that reaffirm the band’s remarkable talent. (Rate:8).

Out via Swiss Dark Nights on February 16th is the all new album “Black Magic” by the Italian electro trio They Die. The album is the follow-up to the “Emptiness prevails” album (July 2022).

They Die was founded by Giorgio Ricci of Templebeat (Dynamica-Machinery, Sub/Mission, 21st Circuitry) but unlike the legendary 90s Electro/EBM-act Templebeat, They Die offer a much more ‘gothic’ and darker touch.

The band’s new album (the 3rd in their still young existence) contains 9 original tracks, including the brand new single “Our Blood“.

Italian formation They Die saw the daylight in 2020. Driven by three experienced musicians who knew each other from other projects they are/were involved with, the band released two noticeable albums so far. “Deviant Love” released in 2021 by Jetglow Recordings sounds as pure Cold-Wave reminding legendary 80s formations. They last year stroke back releasing “Emptiness Prevails” on Swiss Dark Nights. Giorgio Ricci, Massimiliano Griggio and Simone Scarani confirmed the strong potential of the debut work. I consider They Die as one of the most promising formations from Dark-Wave scene. I got in touch with ‘Simon Scar’.

(Courtesy by Inferno Sound Diaries)

Q: I think you set up They Die in 2020. How did you guys met and can you give us more details about your music background?

Scar: Exact, They Die exist since 2020; set up by three members that have been collaborating together for some time in various projects, First Black Pope, Black Beat, Templezone, Templebeat… A lot of music made and lived in the underground, always within the dark Industrial scene. They Die was born out of our need to be able to express our most…’romantic’ part; our decadent vision of love.

Q: What kind of band and sound did you’d in mind when setting up the band? Do you’ve specific sources of inspiration and/or references when composing your music?

Scar: When I compose, the music is born first and then I add vocals and lyrics. I never have a band in mind… I have a billion hahahaha, that is like everyone I am influenced by many bands, especially from the 80s and 90s, always alternative. With They Die I initially wanted to pay homage to the bands that made me grow by recreating in my own way the atmosphere created by those pieces that I heard as a teenager in the alternative disco in my area

Q: For a new band you’ve just released your second full length album. What means music -and especially They Die to you and how do you perceive the evolution from “Deviant Love” towards “Emptiness Prevails”?

Scar: Music is magic, something invisible that generates emotions, spreads in the air, envelops you, hits you, moves you in time. Having the power to create music, to generate that magic is an honor for me, and I can’t live without it; my whole life has been and is based on music. Right now They Die is the name I use to speak to the world, to express myself, to excite… on the one hand…. and on the other it’s my way of talking to myself, of looking inside myself, of keeping myself alive.

From the first to the second album I think you notice a certain maturity in the sounds and in the production in general. I always try to do better and I’m very picky, sometimes even too much, actually no it’s never too much hahaha

Q: Tell us a bit more about the new work? What is “Emptiness Prevails” all about how did the album took shape?

Scar: “Emptiness Prevails” is that emotional emptiness that is perceived in the stomach when we lose someone, someone who was part of us, that overwhelming feeling of emptiness that makes us seem to have taken away a part of ourselves. The album was written much more consciously than the first one, and it feels, above all because with “Deviant Love” we had received good reviews and attracted good attention, thanks above all to Yami Spechie who gave us the opportunity to upload our videoclips on his Youtube channel, and we didn’t want to disappoint expectations. We did our best and I’m very happy you’re enjoying it, I notice it from the amount of web compilations that arrive every day with our songs featured on it.

Q: You mentioned the influence of the 80s Dark-Wave music but what means this music to you?

Scar: The 80s are the years that left me the most influences on an artistic and aesthetic level; they were the years in which synthesizers exploded, music was cold and fashion was square…. I clearly remember as child I was listening to the radio and it often happened that my mother came into the room and found me near the radio in tears, and she asked me: ‘why are you crying?’… and I returned to reality: this music is sad… I was already a little Goth… I have gravitated to the dark environment all my life, it is a subculture that has lived in time since the 80s, musically it has a thousand of facets and sub-genres, but more generally it is a way of being and of seeing the world

Q: What are the plans for the next few months and how important are live performances to you?

Scar: We have just joined the Blackweb tour-booking agency and therefore we hope to continue promoting “Emptiness Prevails” even better with live performances. In the meantime I have started writing new songs for the next album which will be released in 2023. I have always performed live and it was my therapy; I am a very shy and lonely person and finding myself with all eyes on me always is a challenge against myself. Two or three hours before the show my hands start shaking and I need to be alone and concentrate, and as soon as the show ends everything relaxes and I feel drained.

Out on January 13th is a deluxe box for the Italian goth rock act Spiritual Bats (now called The Spiritual Bat) holding 4 individual digipak-CDs inside. The release is limited to 300 copies.

This release on the Swiss Dark Nights label comes after “The Acqualuce Years” collector edition of Burning Gates and The Elysium Facade “Trichotomy” Box. The remastered box includes remastered versions of early band releases, deleted for ages: the “Spiritual Bats” vinyl EP, a unreleased tape of band rehearsals called “Confession”, a complete remixed and remastered version of the “Sacrament” EP and the album “Through the Shadows”.

The journey across these 4 different CDS spans the period between 1993 and 2008, featuring four different line-ups. There is a chronological order, except for the bonus tracks on CD1 Taken from the 1996 “Confession” album, but recorded by the “Sacrament” line-up during a rehearsal at Ultrasound studios in 1998, before a one-off US show, at Alchemy Mondays, CB’s Gallery, on August 3rd 1998.

Note that the “Through the Shadows” album was originally conceived and recorded by The Spiritual Bat in their home studio as an instrumental album with programmed drums, but later vocals and acoustic drums were recorded and mixed by Claudio Mura, in a garage in Serrone.

Below are the visuals.

Genre/Influences: Cold-Wave.

Format: Digital, CD.

Background/Info: Set up in 2020 the Italian Cold-Wave formation They Die strikes back with their second opus. One year after the remarkable “Deviant Love” they now joined hands together with Swiss Dark Nights.

Content: They Die sounds like awakening from a long hibernation. The sound of this band brings us back to the midst of the 80s; obscure and moody atmospheres created by mewing guitar and melodic synth parts while low, vibrating, bass play only accentuate the dark approach. The band is once more reminding me of The Sisters Of Mercy but also The Virgin Prunes and more contemporary formations like Lebanon Hannover. They again put a cover song to the album and chose Bauhaus’ “The Passion Of Lovers”.

+ + + : I was already under the influence of “Deviant Love” but the new work moves a step further. It’s a great and mature production bringing the true spirit of the 80s alive. I especially like the guitar playing and bass lines on one side and the electronic arrangements bringing a refined touch to the other side. The album features the single “One Last Kiss” but there are more potential singles like “All Your Magic” and “Everything That Burns”. Both songs are potential hits. Last but not least they now also accomplished a cool cover version, “The Passion Of Lovers” being adapted into their own style.

– – – : The last song of the album sounds like an outro and rather an antithesis to the rest of this brilliant work. I would also like to see this band being produced by a renown name improving a few details in sound.

Conclusion: I already said to keep an eye on this band and the new work only confirms the huge potential of They Die. This is great Cold-Wave!

Best songs: “All Your Magic”, “Everything That Burns”, “One Last Kiss”, “Single frame”, “Done Done Done”, “Absolution”.

Rate: 8½.

Format: Digital, CD, Vinyl.

Background/Info: This is the fifth studio album by Italian Gothic formation The Spiritual Bat. Previous works have been released by Alchemisti Music and mainly Danse Macabre Records. A live album was already released by Swiss Dark Nights.

Content: The album sounds in the tradition of the band. A perfect mix between Dark-Wave reminiscences reminding me of The Skeletal Family (for the guitar playing) and a Dark-Goth/Rock approach. The songs are driven by female vocals injecting a true bewitching effect to the production.

+ + + : The Spiritual Bat stands for passion, which is emerging from the vocals and the guitar. There’s a bombastic touch running through the work creating a very personal approach. This is a fully enjoyable production without real potential hits, but cool songs.

– – – : The songs are missing little details to become potential hits. It’s maybe about choruses, which don’t have a true elevating effect. I also regret that the album features only 9 songs.

Conclusion: The spiritual Bat is a warrant for well-crafted Goth-Rock music with a personal approach.

Best songs: “Sanctu”, “To The Kuiper Belt”, “Heroes Anymore”.

Rate: 7½.

Genre/Influences: Post-Punk, Dark-Wave.

Format: Digital, CD, Vinyl.

Background/Info: This is the fourth full length album by the French duo Dear Deer. Claudine Sourdeval and Federico Iovino invited a few guest musicians to perform on a few tracks.

Content: The album features 2 parts, “Collect” and “Reject” each part featuring 5 songs. The first part sounds more into Dark-Wave and Post-Punk while the second part is achieved with extra electronics on top. Male and female vocals are alternating but also produced as a duo.

+ + + : The second part of the album has an irresistible feeling. Not that Dear Deer is reinventing any kind of music but the songs have a refreshing Dark-Wave/Indie touch. It sounds diversified -which is also a noticeable element in the vocal production. I also enjoyed one of the tracks of the debut part for the cool trumpet playing.

– – – : I can’t say that the debut songs are hesitant but just a teaser to what’s coming next.

Conclusion: Dear Deer sounds like it’s in constant progress and even if their sound has a strong 80s appeal they progressively reached a more personal production.

Best songs: “Plaster”, “Watch Me I’m A Marauder”, “JJR”, “Deux”, “Backward Groove”.

Rate: 8.

Genre/Influences: Electro-Wave, Cold-Wave.

Format: Digital, CD.

Background/Info: Behind this new Swedish solo-project is hiding Alex Svenson who you for sure known as the singer of Then Comes Silence. “ISH” is his debut-work featuring four songs plus two remixes.

Content: Sound-wise this project has less in common with Then Comes Silence except a very strong 80s influence. But this production is driven by vintage electronic sounds. The songs reflect some Wave-Pop style with Svenson’s charismatic vocals on top. Label mates Kurs and Ash Code have done the remixes.

+ + + : All original edits are great compositions revealing a retro-refreshing Electro sound. The songs are well-crafted and accentuated by efficient melody lines with this 80s dark touch on top. This music might appeal to lovers of Fad Gadget although I don’t want to make any further comparison. Alex Svenson also confirms his great vocal skills.

– – – : Both remixes are okay but don’t bring any bonus. I however prefer the remix by Kurs.

Conclusion: Neonpolcalypse is a true discovery, and I can only encourage Alex Svenson to move on. This is a great project revealing an immense potential.

Best songs: “The Light”, “Broken Circles”, “Lips”, “Game Over”.

Rate: 8½.

Tenderlash is the solo electronic project of artist/composer/vocalist Candy Durant, based in Southeastern USA. The project draws from influences in 80s underground, new wave, coldwave, and darkwave. The debut single “Mourning At Midnight,” was originally released in 2013 on the Bedroom Cassette Masters Volume IV compilation. After taking a hiatus to play and tour as vocalist/keyboard player in electronic band Solemn Shapes, Tenderlash was then resurrected in 2020.

The Mourning EP was released on Bandcamp in March 2020, containing the first single, two remixes, and a cover of The Cure’s “If Only Tonight We Could Sleep”. Shortly after the EP’s release, Tenderlash signed with European record label Swiss Dark Nights and released her debut full-length album “Hold Still” in January 2021.

Out in the next weeks now is a limited edition physical release of a live performance originally aired on 22 May 2021 for A Black Celebration WGD Special Edition. It features 6 of the 9 tracks, that were included in Tenderlash’ debut album “Hold Still”, in quite different, exclusive live-versions.

About Simon Dreams In Violet

Simon Dreams In Violet formed in Rome, Italy in 1992. They were very active in the early 90s in the Italian Goth/Darkwave scene were famous for their memorable live performances. They only released one album, 1994’s “Dreaming The Lost” and 2 singles: “Simon Dreams In Violet” (1993) and “Follia” before disbanding.

The first line-up included singer Massimiliano Maria, guitarist Luigi Lai, bassist ‘Lo Spettro Di Se Stesso’ and drummer Alice. Their first tape, the self titled “Simon Dreams In Violet”, was released on the legendary Energeia label in spring 1993, and featured 6 tracks and several alternative versions. Their second release, their debut album, “Dreaming the Lost” was released for the same label the year after, and featured a new version of the Poe inspired track “The Lake” along with 10 new tracks. 1995 saw the release of “Follia”, a compilation of unreleased tracks, some recorded after the 2nd demo sessions with their first guitarist and 2 live tracks, recorded with the second guitarist Stefano Feru.

In 1996 Necrosis released an extended and remastered version of all three works including several alternative versions and unreleased instrumental versions performed during live performances.

About Death Loves Veronica

Death Loves Veronica is the project by Veronica Campbell who has composed and performed music for several years with post- punk, and deathrock acts. This solo project includes semi-modular and analog synthesizers, guitars, and experimental methods to give a dark electronic feel reminiscent of the 80s and 90s electronic post-industrial/new wave movement.

A first album was released in 2018, “Vampiros Electric”, followed by “Lucid Dreams” in 2020 via Swiss Dark Nights. In between a string of singles were released as well.

After releasing the album “Chemical” through Cold Transmission Campbell started work with several artists from the dark electronic scene to record material. The single/EP “Deception” is the result of one of those collaborations, this time with Nero Bellum.

The collaboration with a second artist is currently in production.

“Chemical” is the new album by Death Loves Veronica, whose new album results to be heavily saturated with post-industrial and gothic influences and recorded with analog synths and minimal guitar work.

Veronica recorded the framework of this album within a two-week time period while in recovery from an intensive health-related surgery. With limited use of her arms, she dove into the more technical capabilities of her favorite synthesizers, keeping her distance from the use of MIDI.

The release comes in 2 formats, a limited edition of 200 copies on transparent magenta white marbled vinyl and in a 6-panel digipak.

The project debuted in 2018 with the demo album, “Vampiros Electric” bringing a cold wave-minimalist sound created with a variety of synth work and distinctly clean vocals. A collection of her works has been released on European label Swiss Dark Nights entitled, “Three Acts”, shortly after followed by last year’s album “Lucid Dreams”.

Genre/Influences: Cold-Wave, Dark-Wave.

Format: Digital, CD, Vinyl.

Background/Info: The Midnight Computers is a French trio featuring members from different musical horizons. “Anxious” is the band’s debut album featuring nine songs.

Content: From the very first song you immediately feel like getting back to the past and awakening somewhere in the 80s. This band is dealing with powerful Cold/Dark-Wave music carried by solid and mewing guitar playing. The songs have been accomplished with electronic melodies and arrangements. The songs remind me of an imaginary hybrid between The Sisters Of Mercy and Lebanon Hanover.

+ + + : The album only features 9 tracks, and there’s not much to throw away. This album is an extremely powerful exposure of a band mainly inspired by the darkest hours of Dark/Cold-Wave music, but with a unique touch on top. There’s a great balance between the masterly produced guitar parts and the electronics. It creates a fusion between power and melody with grave, charismatic vocals on top. There’re a few brilliant songs featured in this work, but I especially recommend “Disgrace” and “Succubus”.

– – – : There’s just one song (cf. “Murder Pain”), which can’t convince me and quite curiously this song also is the softest one from the album.

Conclusion: The Midnight Computers is a real hot discovery, which I can only, but highly recommend to discover!

Best songs: “Disgrace”, “Succubus”, “Tears”, “Our Most Beautiful Lies”.

Rate: (8½).

Background/Info: Dear Deer is a duo consisting of Federico Lovino (Popoï Sdioh) and Sabatel (Cheshire Cat, Guerre Froide). “Oh My” is their official debut album, which was released on vinyl format by Manic Depression Records and on CD by Swiss Dark Nights. “Oh My” reveals 9 songs.

Content: It only takes a few seconds to get an idea about the sources of inspiration for this band. Dead Deer mixes elements of post-punk and cold-wave together with a somewhat industrial-like input. On one side you’ll notice vintage electronics and on the other side a more classical cold-wave/post-punk sound, which might remind you of The Sisters Of Mercy and Bauhaus.

There’s also is a nice twist between the male and female vocals. Federico Lovino’s timbre of voice sometimes reminds me of Gavin Friday, which injects an extra 80s touch to the work.

+ + + : “Oh My” clearly doesn’t reinvent any music genre, but I like the way this band has mixed different 80s elements together. It sounds pretty old-styled, but still refreshing and featuring multiple remarkable songs. This is a cool work, which seems to reveal it is still possible to compose exciting music based on old receipts. “Statement”, “Claudine In Berlin” and “Clinical/Physical” featuring Loto Ball are really alluring cuts, which will for sure convince you of this band’s potential.

– – – : The main strength of an album often also is its major point that you can discuss. So Dear Deer clearly doesn’t reinvent anything and would maybe give you the impression discovering one of these numerous forgotten and lost 80s formations.

Conclusion: Who cares if a band is simply emulating an old-fashioned music genre. Dear Deer kicks ass and has accomplished a great piece of music, which I hope will be only the beginning. You guys rocks!

Best songs: “Statement”, “Claudine In Berlin”, “Clinical/Physical feat. Loto Ball”, “Dear Deer”, “Arnolfini”.

Rate: (8).
