Like What is an American solo project that emerged during the Covid-19 lockdowns. Since then, the artist has released several singles and a few EPs. As the title of this album suggests, Like What is celebrating its fifth anniversary this year—and to mark the occasion, the project has revisited its five most popular tracks.

I wasn’t very familiar with Like What before, but this release proves it’s definitely a project worth (re)discovering. The music offers a refined blend of soft EBM and Electro-Pop, with some gritty guitar riffs woven in for contrast. The vocals are charismatic and add a strong sense of personality, while the sound design occasionally leans into a vintage, 80s-inspired aesthetic.

One track includes a short instrumental interlude, which may not be the project’s strongest moment, yet overall, this is a highly danceable and engaging release from an artist who clearly has something to say—and the skill to express it. (Rating:7).

New York City-based cinematic synthpop project Like What has just released a new compilation EP titled “Anniversary Anthology“. The digital-only EP celebrates five years of activity and features the project’s five most popular tracks to date. The release is accompanied by a newly produced video for the band’s original debut single, “Dark is the Night.”

The self-produced project, originally formed during the pandemic lockdown as an experimental outlet, centers on a minimal production setup using only an iPad and a guitar. The result is a blend of synthpop and darkwave elements.

The track “Dark is the Night” has been given a fresh visual treatment for its anniversary edition.

About Like What

Like What was founded in New York City in 2020 as a quarantine-driven creative project. Using only an iPad and a guitar, the project began crafting self-produced tracks influenced by early electro pioneers such as Kraftwerk and by the cinematic aesthetics of horror and noir.
