In the often unpredictable world of music, collaborations can either blend seamlessly or clash in a dissonant display.

With this album, we witness a masterful synergy that captures the essence of summer’s fleeting beauty and endless allure. The album is a journey through soundscapes that feel both familiar and novel, inviting listeners to immerse themselves in an experience that is as evocative as it is technically impressive.

A Fusion of Styles

There have been many amazing musical collaborations over the years, and this is definitely one to note.

Fanum, known for his meticulous production and genre-bending approach, brings a wealth of experience to the album. His previous works have often danced between the boundaries of electronic, ambient, and experimental music, creating intricate tapestries of sound. In contrast, Ierophania’s contributions are marked by an ethereal quality, often infused with elements of neo-classical and dream pop. The marriage of these distinct styles results in an album that feels expansive yet intimate, a delicate balance that is difficult to achieve but executed flawlessly here.

The opening track, Solstice Reverie, sets the tone for the album with its lush layers of synths and soft, reverberating vocals. It’s a track that feels like the first light of dawn, gentle and full of promise. Fanum’s production is immediately evident, with every sound meticulously placed to create a sense of space and warmth. Ierophania’s voice floats effortlessly above the instrumentation, adding a haunting yet comforting dimension to the track.

Themes of Transience and Nostalgia

As the album progresses, it becomes clear that Escort of Endless Summer is not just a collection of songs but a thematic exploration of time, memory, and the ephemeral nature of summer. Tracks like Ephemeral Rays and Twilight Mirage delve into these ideas with a melancholic undertone. The use of field recordings, such as the distant sound of waves and birdsong, further enhances the album’s connection to nature and the passing of time.

One of the standout tracks, Azure Horizon, perfectly encapsulates the album’s central theme. The song builds gradually, starting with a simple piano motif before expanding into a full-bodied composition that feels both nostalgic and forward-looking. The interplay between Fanum’s rich, textured production and Ierophania’s vocal melodies creates a sense of longing as if reaching for something just out of grasp—a feeling that anyone who has watched the sun set on a summer’s day can relate to.

A Sonic Landscape

The album’s production is nothing short of stunning. Fanum’s attention to detail ensures that each track feels like a carefully constructed world, with layers of sound that reveal themselves upon repeated listens. Ierophania’s contributions, whether through her vocals or her instrumentation, add a human touch to these sonic landscapes, grounding them in emotion.

The closing track, Endless Night, is a fitting conclusion to the album. It feels like the final moments of a long summer day, where the warmth of the sun lingers even as the night begins to take hold. The track is both a farewell and a promise—a reminder that while summer may end, its memories will linger long after.

A Triumphant Collaboration

Escort of Endless Summer is a triumph of collaboration, a testament to what can be achieved when two artists with distinct visions come together. Fanum and Ierophania have created an album that not only captures the essence of summer but also explores deeper themes of time, memory, and the fleeting nature of beauty. It’s an album that demands to be listened to in its entirety, a sonic journey that will resonate with listeners long after the final note fades away.

About Ierophania and Fanum

Ierophania is a Russian industrial and dark-ambient project. Side-Line reviewed the four-part “Book Of Memories” anthology in March 2022, covering material dating from 2005 to 2010 and released through Castle Of Dreams. The final chapter of that anthology, “Jordan,” was introduced as part of the same lineage as the collaborative album with fellow Russian project Fanum, “Escort of Endless Summer.”

Format: Digital, Cassette.

Background/Info: “Jordan” is the fourth and last chapter of the “Book Of Memories”-series by the Russian Industrial project Ierophania. The album features four tracks, which have been introduced as being in the line of the collaborative album(cf. “Escort Of Endless Summer”) Ierophania did together with their compatriots of Fanum.

Content: The main difference between these ‘later’ tracks and former albums is the explicit Dark-Ambient side. Ierophania constructed a heavy, resonating sound, which gives you the impression of an echo in a church. The atmosphere is menacing and overloaded with elements of drama.

+ + + : This is already a work with a different focus and the least I can say is that Ierophania have a nose to compose poignant and overwhelming obscure Ambient atmospheres. The last track especially has a strong visual appeal. The sound has something disturbing, creating the sensation of a nearby disaster. The best cuts definitely are both last ones.

– – – : It’s a shame this Russian formation didn’t get more recognition and response in the international Industrial music scene.

Conclusion: These four albums of the anthology are a true must-have for all Industrial & Dark-Ambient fans. The last album in the series is a masterpiece.

Best songs: “Hagalaz Ritual”, “So I Will Be Protected In The Shining Of Your Eyes”.

Rate: 8.

About Ierophania

Ierophania is a Russian ritual industrial and dark ambient project active since the mid-2000s. Discogs credits the recordings to a single member, listed as Мертвый Лед. The label Castle Of Dreams states the project “has never been genre-oriented” and “has always remained true to its once-postulated ‘ritual anti-art’ manifesto”.

The project debuted in 2006 with the limited CDr “Иерофания” on Ufa Muzak, followed by the two-disc “Детство” on Embrion D in 2007 and the “Splite” and “Human’s Death” EPs in 2008. Four titles appeared in 2009: both volumes of “Ritual Works For Destruction”, on Tachibana Records and Spermodeath Records, plus “Heliogabalus” and the collection “Mobilization 2005 – 2009” on SkullLine. “Krv” followed on DNA Production in 2012, alongside the collaborative album with Fanum, “Escort Of Endless Summer”, on Radiodrone Records.

Format: Digital, Cassette.

Background/Info: The third chapter in this “Book Of Memories”-series around the Russian formation Ierophania brings us seven tracks written between 2008 and 2009.

Content: The tracks are carried by strong Industrial sound treatments and an impressive canvas of noises. Ierophania also injects field recordings into the composition. Slow percussion parts and other Martial rhythms are running through the work. You’ll also notice liturgical chants mixed with Russian vocals.

+ + + : This work reveals the most elaborated and accomplished work I’ve heard from Ierophania. The composition is a fusion between Industrial noises and a Dark-Ambient style. They achieve the work with extra elements creating a very own and open-minded spectrum of Industrial music. The sacred-like chants bring a mysterious touch to the work. I recommend listening to both debut tracks. I also noticed heavy dark blasts literally exploding at “Ritual Of Rising Child”.

– – – : The second part of the work is a little less exciting compared to the solid debut.

Conclusion: This is the most accomplished and best album in the “Book Of Memories”-series so far; great and personal Industrial music.

Best songs: “In Memory Of Codreanu”, “The Scar”, “Ritual Of Rising Child”.

Rate: 7.

Genre/Influences: Industrial, Cinematic, Dark-Ambient.

Format: Digital, Cassette.

Background/Info: “Golgotha” is the second opus in the “Book Of Memories”-series. It’s a way to (re)discover this Russian project featuring nine songs composed/performed between 2006 & 2007.

Content: The first and last track are studio compositions while all the other tracks are taken from live performances. The opening piece is driven by the Industrial side of the project while mixed with a kind of liturgical chant. The live recordings reinforce the Industrial spirit of the band, revealing an extremely cold and sterile sound. Passages are reminding me to the ominous sphere created by Last Few Days.

+ + + : Ierophania empowers its Industrial side by their live recordings. I like the metallic noises and percussion. The work also reveals an interesting diversity between this ‘typical’ Industrial format and a more explicit Cinematic style.

Castle Of Dreams issued the four-part “Book Of Memories” series on 8 August 2021, using 2017 remasters and artwork by J.
Format: Digital, Cassette.

Background/Info: Ierophonia is a Russian project which has been introduced as being one of the flag holders of the Russian Noise revival of the 21st Century. Castle Of Dreams started a series of recordings featuring their works of the past.

Content: “The Flight Of A Bee” features 9 cuts, which sound like Industrial sounds and noises that have been put in an Ambient mold. You’ll also notice Russian vocals, which are now ghost-like and then more into exclamation.

+ + + : This album reminds me of early Industrial projects from the 80s. There’s a true Industrial spirit emerging at the surface and creating an icy sensation. The tracks are elaborate and especially the beginning of the work is worthy of examination. I also have to say a word about the cool artwork of the cover.

– – – : The best cuts are right at the beginning and that’s a pity as you get the feeling to move from a climax towards an anti-climax.

Conclusion: This is a fascinating work for lovers of early Industrial music.

Best songs: “Ich Bin Alles”, “Kenozis”.

Rate: 7.
