Enzo Kreft – Dictator (Digital/CD Album – Enzo Kreft Music)
Eric Vandamme, better known by his pseudonym Enzo Kreft, returns with a powerful new album. The title of this work leaves little doubt about the theme that inspired him: the dangers and consequences of dictatorship. This topic is especially relevant today, as history has already shown us where authoritarianism can lead — including the suppression of artistic expression.
Kreft has translated this theme into his signature musical style. True to his roots as an old-school Belgian musician, his sound remains idiosyncratic, frequently referencing the 80s in a compelling blend of Cold-Wave and Body-Pop. At times minimalistic, the music is always accessible, featuring a distinctive vocal delivery that ensures the impact of the lyrics is fully felt. Layered with spoken-word samples, the album makes Kreft’s stance on dictatorial regimes unmistakably clear.
“Dictator” is yet another impressive release from this DIY artist, who also handles the album’s artwork. Beyond the music itself, the accompanying video clips are well worth exploring. Across 12 concise tracks, the album captures the urgency and threat of our current zeitgeist. Personally, I sometimes wish the songs were a bit longer.
All in all, it’s a strong record — though not, in my opinion, his best. (Rating:8).
