Johannesburg gothic rock band The Awakening, led by Ashton Nyte, released the single and video “Until The Dawn” on 23 July 2026, the first material from the band’s upcoming 13th album, “The Lost Theatre”. The album is out 23 August 2026 through Intervention Arts.

Nyte describes “Until The Dawn” as the track that started the new album: “[It] is the song that gave birth to The Lost Theatre. I’m always writing songs, but this one told me a new album was on the way, and it had to be the first single. It is essentially a song about the courage of asking for help. It is a song of hope.” The single is streaming on Spotify.

“The Lost Theatre” is the follow-up to The Awakening’s 2024 self-titled album, which reached number 3 on Germany’s Deutsche Alternative Charts. All music and lyrics on the new album are written, composed and performed by Ashton Nyte, produced by Nyte at Intervention Studios in the US and published by Intervention Arts / ASCAP. The album and a selection of limited-edition items are available for pre-order through The Awakening’s stores in Germany, the UK and the US.

The Lost Theatre Tour dates 2026

The Awakening will support the album with a run of German shows, following last year’s worldwide Haunting Tour, which included headline dates in Germany, Poland, France, the Netherlands, the US, Canada, the UK, Mexico and South Africa. Tickets are available through the band’s site.

South African Gothic/Darkwave act The Awakening has just shared their new video for “Through The Veil“. The video is the third from the self-titled 12th album and follows “Mirror Midnight” and “Haunting”.

“‘Through The Veil’ tells the story of someone who has left this world but still wants to be near the one they love. I think it is beautifully romantic and relatable in any setting where we are separated from the person we need to be close to,” says frontman Ashton Nyte.

The video is accompanied by a full 3-track EP, including the video edit of “Through The Veil” plus the previous two singles “Mirror Midnight” and “Haunting”.

The Awakening has also announced additional tour dates for 2025. The Haunting Tour 2025 includes headline shows in Germany, France, Canada, the UK, and the US, as well as co-headline performances at the Castle Party in Poland and Brainstorm Fest in the Netherlands.

Joining Ashton Nyte on stage for The Awakening’s tour is long-term guitarist Jeremy Kohnmann (also of London After Midnight), bassist Diego “Ashes” Ibarra (previously of Static-X, DevilDriver, currently Wednesday 13) and long-term South African drummer Sevven. Tickets can be ordered here.

About The Awakening

Formed in Johannesburg in 1995 by vocalist, songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist Ashton Nyte, The Awakening has become South Africa’s most succesful gothic rock export product. Over more than two decades, the project has evolved from its post-punk origins into a fusion of gothic rock, darkwave, and industrial, a style which Nyte describes as dark future rock.

The band’s debut album “Risen” (1997) featured a cover of Simon & Garfunkel’s “The Sounds of Silence”, which topped South African rock charts. Follow-up albums like “Request” (1998) and “Ethereal Menace” (1999) leaned further into synth-driven textures and industrial percussion.

Later works include “The Fourth Seal of Zeen” (2000), “Darker Than Silence” (2004), and “Razor Burn” (2006).

Following their relocation to the United States in 2008, The Awakening started tours across Europe and North America including a 36-date European tour supporting Wayne Hussey of The Mission in 2019. During this period, Ashton Nyte also collaborated on numerous projects, including contributions to Beauty in Chaos’s album “Dancing With Angels”.

In 2022, the band returned to its heavier roots with the release of “The Passage Remains”, their eleventh studio album.

Gothic Rock / Darkwave act The Awakening presents “Mirror Midnight”, the first taste of the self-titled album (their 12th to date, out October 18).

The single is about “humans’ tendency towards self-obsession and the media’s recurring manipulation of self-perception” so the band’s founding member Ashton Nyte says. And he adds: “Mirror Midnight is about the obsession of the self, as guided and fed and manipulated by mass media, social media and the endless flood of information and disinformation we all deal with constantly. It’s the juxtaposition of succumbing to insidious and divisive marketing while the world goes up in flames. And how that cycle feeds itself. It’s a story almost as old as time, like the fairy tale it alludes to.”

Now based in the USA, The Awakening formed in South Africa in the late ’90s as the project of Ashton Nyte.

Coming up as well is an EU and UK solo acoustic tour – Nyte’s first post-Covid tour following his 36-date tour with Wayne Hussey back in 2019. The EU-UK tour kicks off September 28.

LA-based collective Beauty In Chaos has released their fourth album, “Dancing With Angels”, via 33.3 Music Collective. The album, featuring eight tracks, comes hand in hand with the video for “Holy Ground“, featuring Patrik Mata of Kommunity FK.

Formed in 2018 by guitarist Michael Ciravolo and Grammy-nominated producer Michael Rozon, Beauty In Chaos is a revolving collective of artists. The new album features contributions from returning members and new collaborators, including Wayne Hussey (The Mission), Ashton Nyte (The Awakening), Kat Leon (Holy Wars), Cinthya Hussey, William and Sarah Faith (The Bellwether Syndicate), Leo Luganskiy (Strangelove), Julian Shah-Tayler (The Singularity), Cynthia Isabella, and Patrik Mata (Kommunity FK).

Ciravolo describes the album as both a “sonic regression and a sonic progression,” blending elements from their previous works with new influences. The album includes unique interludes, or “Halos”, that connect the tracks.

The lead track, “Diving For Pearls“, features Wayne and Cinthya Hussey, with a single version mixed by Tim Palmer. As of July 24, ‘Dancing With Angels’ is available on limited edition multi-color vinyl and CD from the Beauty In Chaos store, where the ‘Diving For Pearls’ limited edition CD single is also available. Out now is “The Complete Recordings 1992-1996” by Australian darkwave / goth act Ikon.

The release turns out to be a four-CD anthology, cataloging their beginnings as a young band, after emerging from the ashes of previous project, Death In The Dark. The set includes their first EP, “The Echoes of Silence”, recorded at Melbourne’s Studio 52 in June 1993, followed by two full-length albums, “In The Shadow of the Angel” (1994) and “Flowers for the Gathering” (1996).

Added as a bonus, and this is a real gem, is “Rarities”, a gathering of rare gems, which includes a variety of mixes, alternate versions, and re-records.

Frontman Chris McCarter and bassist Dino Molinaro began writing songs together as high school students in 1988 already creating an own sound infused with elements of Joy Division, early New Order, and a touch of Death In June.

The Awakening has just released a new music video for the 4-part title track of their new double album, “The Passage Remains”. The video, “Passage (Part I – IV)”, is a teaser for the return to the band’s gothic metal roots. “The Passage Remains” is The Awakening’s 11th album.

“The essence of the song came to me in a dream, and I have taken that inspiration and woven it through the album. Dreams, our hopes, needs and desires, and personal journeys, in the face of adversity and other obstacles,” says The Awakening’s frontman, Ashton Nyte.

The physical album is packaged as a deluxe double CD (with double vinyl scheduled for next year). “The album was created to be enjoyed either as a whole, in two parts, or as two separate entities, each complete within themselves. It is a project I have wanted to create for many years, and I am delighted with the outcome,” Ashton Nyte adds.

To mark the halfway point of the 36 date European tour, Ashton Nyte from The Awakening has released live video footage from the band on the road. The video captures Ashton performing an acoustic version of The Awakening’s “Upon The Water” at the Limburg Theater in Heerlen, The Netherlands last week.

Singer and guitarist Ashton says: “The tour has been a magical experience. Working with Wayne and our fabulous tour manager Tim Parsons has been a joy and the audiences have been wonderfully responsive. I’ve enjoyed seeing many familiar faces and many new ones, as the tour winds back and forth through Europe. I’m looking forward to the second half and all that lies ahead. Considering we have very few days off, I am also very grateful for the delight that is European coffee.”

The Awakening will be supporting Wayne Hussey (The Mission) on the European dates of his upcoming Salad Daze Tour! The Awakening will be playing over 30 shows across Europe from 3 September – 16 October 2019.

The Awakening is a musical gothic / dark rock project founded in Johannesburg, South Africa in 1995 by vocalist, songwriter, guitarist and producer Ashton Nyte. As of 2008 The Awakening has been based in the United States.

Wayne Hussey: “I met Ashton and that beautiful baritone voice of his a few years back and we have since remained friends and supporters of each other’s work. Of course we both also continue to be heavily involved with Michael Ciravolo’s ‘Beauty In Chaos’ project. So it is with huge pleasure I can confirm that Ashton will be supporting me on the mainland Europe (except Greece & Sweden) leg of my ‘Salad Daze’ tour. It’ll be great to have him along for the ride. Here’s a release which should please many gothic rock fans. Out in Summer, but available in pre-order now is the solo debut album of Mark Gemini Thwaite. That name will ring a bell with many readers as Mark Gemini Thwaite (aka MGT) has recorded and performed with a large variety of goth rock acts over the years.

The list includes a long tenure with UK gothic rock act The Mission, Peter Murphy (Bauhaus), 3 albums and various tours with trip hop musician Tricky and Gary Numan next to collaborations with Ministry, P.J. Harvey, Combichrist, Red Hot Chilli Peppers, Revolting Co*ks, Young Gods, Prong, Primitive Race, etc..

The Awakening, South Africa’s best known gothic metal export product, is set to release a new single, “The Carriage”, this Halloween. The single will act as the lead single for their full-length album, set to be released March 2016.

“The Carriage” was mastered by Maor Appelbaum (Faith No More, Sepultura, and Therion) in Los Angeles and the band could count on a guest appearance by Mark Gemini Thwaite (guitarist for The Mission, Peter Murphy, and Gary Numan). The single also is the first recording to feature The Awakening’s new bassist, Chela Rhea Harper (previously of Coal Chamber).

Since relocating to the US in 2008, The Awakening have released their eighth album “Tales Of Absolution + Obsoletion” in 2009, toured extensively, and released “Anthology XV” in 2013. In addition, front man and songwriter Ashton Nyte released 3 solo albums, “The Valley”, “Moederland” and “Some Kind Of Satellite”.
