Out now via Bandcamp as a free download is DJ Shane Aungst’s “Electronic Bodies – Nightside Sessions” mega-mix. The Seattle (United States) based DJ produced this 2-part megamix including 23 tracks (and 2 intros) from “Electronic Bodies” during long evening sessions in October 2023. Note that the intros were created by Viscera Drip.

As you will know the original “Electronic Bodies” compilation (available here on Bandcamp) focused on EBM and its offspring. The proceedings of this mega-mix will equally go to charity.

Shane’s mixes mainly deal in the EBM/Aggrotech/Industrial genres, and come with heavy layers of sampling and edits. He has been doing studio work, working on sampling, mixes, edits, remixes, as well as putting together some original material. We will soon also publish an interview with Shane on his current and future work. Check his Instagram page for more info.

Background/Info: Spankthenun is an American duo set up in 2019 by Eric and Jeremy Hanes. The Hanes brothers seem to be prolific as they already released an impressive number of works in a rather short lapse of time. This new work features nine songs and four remixes. 

Content: The work takes off with a refreshing and powerful piece of EBM driven by guest singer Claus Larsen (Leather Strip). The album moves on revealing powerful songs built up with raw sound treatments, heavy blasts, some carrying choruses and EBM bass lines, which became more explicit during the work. 

Remixes have been done by Mirland (remixing the opening song with his good-old friend and partner in crime Claus Larsen), Nature Of Wires, Planet Damage and Psychosomatik. 

+ + + : The least I can say is that Spankthenun took me by surprise. This band deals with a mature and accomplished production. This is not just EBM, but an elaborated format with overwhelming, blasting sound treatments, menacing bass lines (especially during the second half of the album) and raw sound treatments. Claus Larsen is an extra element to pay attention to for this band, but the Danish Electro master seems to be very comfortable singing on “Off Beatings” –also released as a single. I don’t want to compare this band with Leather Strip, but I think they might catch the attention of the fans for their perfect mix between EBM and darker Electro elements. The song “Industrial Beats” is a great song and potential hit; powerful and driven by a vintage lead. Another amazing song is “The Smoking Gun”, which is driven by impressive, raw sound blasts. 

– – – : I can’t say that the remixes aren’t adding a bonus to the work, but the original versions are simply better. 

Conclusion: Spankthenun has the potential to become the next great surprise from the US. This is well-crafted EBM. 

Best songs: “Industrial Beats”, “The Smoking Gun”, “Off Beatings”, “Sick Pathos”, “I’m The Fire”.

Spankthenun is an industrial, EBM and electro darkwave band from Dallas, Texas, set up in 2019 by brothers Eric and Jeremy Hanes.

The duo self-released the EPs “Regression Complex” and “Spiderbaby [Construct V.01]” and the single “Slow Suicide” in 2019, followed by “Jingle Bells (A Slaying Song)” and “The Bunker Tapes Vol I.” in 2020, and the single “Dominate” in 2021. “The Bunker Tapes Vol II” appeared on CD the same year.

Background/Info: French duo Michael Roussel – Frederic Lecieux are already active for numerous years, but didn’t release new stuff on a regular basis. This album features a selection of new songs, remastered old cuts and remixes.

Content: The French project is devoted to retro-EBM and that’s an influence you’ll instantly recognize. The dark style and unpolished production has something pretty 90s like. Some elements in the production are vaguely evoking giant bands such as Front 242 and FLA. The album also reveals 2 instrumental songs revealing a more elaborated approach. Remixes have been made by Signal Aout 42, Destillat, Blut Reaktor and Shane Aungst.

+ + + : If you like vintage EBM and you’ve a preference for the 90s style, Psychosomatik will definitely give you an adrenaline boost. The influences are quite familiar, but the band tries to create an own approach with an extra dark touch on top. “Bullfighter” is a familiar song from the band and still remains one of their best exponents. The spooky, distorted vocals inject an extra dark touch. There’s also something to say about both instrumental edits “State Of Oppression” and “GroundZero”. Among the remixes I’ve to mention the great contributions from Signal Aout 42 and Destillat.

– – – : The rough and unpolished mixing and production sounds a bit amateuristic, but is an essential aspect to get back to this retro-style.

Conclusion: Psychosomatik brings some good-old memories alive, the album mainly appealing for all those who are into rough and unpolished EBM.

Best songs: “Bullfighter”, “State Of Oppression”, “No Time To Lose – Signal Aout 42 Remix”, “Bullfighter – Destillat Remix”.

Psychosomatik is a French electro-industrial project formed in September 2000 by Michael Roussel (vocals, machines) and Frederic Lecieux (machines), who had been making music together since 1992, according to the Discogs profile. The self-released CDr “Psychopath?” (2003) was followed by “State Of Oppression” on PSK Records on 4 November 2014. In 2020 the duo issued the digital singles “No Time To Lose / Bullfighter”, “Fears (Of Halloween)” and “The Madman (Spankthenun Edit) / No Time To Lose”.

“Re/In/Trospective” was self-released digitally on 5 February 2021, with a CD edition. The band describes it as a compilation of two new tracks, one reworked track, three remastered tracks from “State Of Oppression”, three unreleased tracks and four remixes. The thirteen tracks are “Damage Done”, “Carnal Pleasure”, “The Madman (Spankthenun Edit)”, “Bullfighter”, “No Time To Lose (Negociation Of Peace)”, “State Of Oppression”, “Check The Numbers (feat. Camuscle)”, “Release Me (feat. OBE)”, “Groundzero”, “No Time To Lose (Signal Aout 42 Remix)”, “Bullfighter (Destillat Remix)”, “No Time To Lose (Blut Reaktor Remix)” and “Bullfighter (Shane Aungst Remix)”. Olivier Camus and Teddy Genty add vocals on two tracks, Craig Saunders made the artwork and Roussel mixed and mastered the album at The Ranch. Since 2022 Psychosomatik has been the solo project of Michael Roussel. Later digital releases include “Burn” (2022), “Sin” (2023), “Stress EP” (2024) and “Felines” (2025). The project contributed to the Side-Line charity compilation Electronic Bodies (2023), and Shane Aungst included it in the ‘Electronic Bodies’ Mega-Mix released the same year. “Re/In/Trospective” is the project’s first Side-Line review.
