(Photo by Eiril Osen Waerdahl) To be released on 4th July is the newest single by the Nordic-British post-punk quartet Permafrost. “Wrong Heart” is the lead single for the band’s brand new album, “The Light Coming Through”, the follow-up to the “Come Back To Surprise” EP, and expected to be released in October.

In addition to the single, Mental Overdrive (aka Per Martinsen) has remixed the single, which will also be available on 4th July.

Out already is the music video for “Wrong Heart”. The video follows four young girls as they set out to create a music video. Of the video they said: “In another dimension Permafrost could be a girl band. In this reality they are planning to create a music video. They have to drag their equipment into the forest to get to the preferred spot, making it into a road movie with a lot of obstacles on the way – like grazing sheep and deer in the blossoming Norwegian nature. When they finally arrive at the spot and want to start playing, the song finishes. All that work for nothing.”

About Permafrost

Formed originally in Molde, Norway in 1982 by school friends Frode Heggdal Larsen and Kåre Steinsbu, Permafrost has undergone numerous transformations over the years. Now joined by fellow Norwegian Robert Heggdal and Daryl Bamonte from the UK (who worked very closely with Depeche Mode and The Cure for several years), they deliver post-punk of the early ’80s.

Permafrost debuted with the “Godtment” EP in 1983, released on a limited edition of 50 numbered cassettes. In 2019, they followed up with the “Permafrost” EP on vinyl, later making it available digitally in 2021. Throughout 2021, the band dropped three singles. : “Femme Fatale”, “Closed Eyes” and “Restore Us”.

The Norwegian post-punk act Permafrost follows up its recent release “Come Back To Surprise” with the Pyxis remix of the track which is out on Friday the 18th on their own Fear of Music label. Pyxis is the remix moniker of producer/mixer Paul Corkett.

Robert Heggdal & Trond Tornes joined in 2001 and Daryl Bamonte in 2016. They take their name from a song by Magazine and other influences are Joy Division, The Cure, Talking Heads, Pere Ubu, Yello, Fad Gadget, The Residents, Wire and Wolfgang Press.

About Paul Corkett

Paul Corkett got his start as an engineer in the mid-1980s, engineering singles and albums for bands as varied as ABC, The Chameleons, Twelfth Night and The Heart Throbs. He landed his first big engineering gig in 1992, recording the single “China” for Tori Amos’s debut album “Little Earthquakes”.

In 1994 he produced his first full album, the second album by Adorable. His engineering work on The Cure’s tenth album “Wild Mood Swings” led to him producing the band’s next album, “Bloodflowers”, released in 2000. After engineering Placebo’s second album “Without You I’m Nothing”, in 1999 Corkett was invited to produce the band’s third album “Black Market Music”.

The early 2000s saw him producing albums for small alternative British bands The Cooper Temple Clause, Biffy Clyro and Queenadreena. In 2012 he teamed up with Love Amongst Ruin frontman Steve Hewitt to engineer albums for French band Lys and Italian band Spiral 69.

Corkett often works at Moles Studio in Bath, having recorded albums by Billy No Mates, Queenadreena, Dionysos, Fiction Plane and Love Amongst Ruin there.

The new single is again produced by Permafrost and mixed by Paul Corkett (The Cure, Placebo, Nick Cave) and is released on the band’s own Fear of Music label, through TBC Records/Secretly Noord distribution.

Note that Daryl Bamonte is also involved in this project. We all know Daryl as the artist manager, known for working for Depeche Mode and the Cure. And of course also als the musical replacement for Andrew Fletcher in 1994 for the second leg of the US Devotional Tour, as well as six shows in South America.

Genre/Influences: Industrial-techno.

Background/Info: Spanish music architect Rafael M. Espinosa is now active for nearly twenty years and can look back to a real qualitative discography. This double album is his seventh full length to date delivering a total amount of twenty five new cuts.

Content: I like most of Geistform’s releases and the previous one “Transmitter” (2016) was an interesting fusion between industrial and techno. “United Radiations” goes a step further and becomes more techno driven although revealing the industrial background of the artist. His analogue sound treatments have something special, which is that much different from the ‘average’ artist in the genre. This is music to dance to, but which is regularly featuring hostile atmospheres.

+ + + : I didn’t really need a new confirmation that techno- and industrial music can be perfectly complementary. But Geistform is much more than simply a project experimenting with these influences. Espinosa is a genius composer creating unique sound treatments and that’s what comes through in this danceable opus. Dark-techno made with intelligence could be the perfect statement to illustrate his work. It’s a unique sound elevating the techno style to a higher dimension.

– – – : What I liked at his previous work is that Espinosa never neglected his ‘industrial’ roots. And even if this new work remains carried by dark sound treatments and industrial elements, it’s sometimes a bit too explicitly techno minded. This might be a dangerous border…

Conclusion: If you want to transpose your energy on the dancefloor, “United Radiations” might be the perfect stuff to get you into a frenetic dance for more than two hours!

Best songs: “Vertical Horizon”, “Gravity Probe”, “Permafrost”, “Pulse Frequency” + “Quasar”, “Tundra”, “Perturbation”.
