(Photo by Eiril Osen Waerdahl) To be released on 4th July is the newest single by the Nordic-British post-punk quartet Permafrost. “Wrong Heart” is the lead single for the band’s brand new album, “The Light Coming Through”, the follow-up to the “Come Back To Surprise” EP, and expected to be released in October.

In addition to the single, Mental Overdrive (aka Per Martinsen) has remixed the single, which will also be available on 4th July.

Out already is the music video for “Wrong Heart”. The video follows four young girls as they set out to create a music video. Of the video they said: “In another dimension Permafrost could be a girl band. In this reality they are planning to create a music video. They have to drag their equipment into the forest to get to the preferred spot, making it into a road movie with a lot of obstacles on the way – like grazing sheep and deer in the blossoming Norwegian nature. When they finally arrive at the spot and want to start playing, the song finishes. All that work for nothing.”

About Permafrost

Formed originally in Molde, Norway in 1982 by school friends Frode Heggdal Larsen and Kåre Steinsbu, Permafrost has undergone numerous transformations over the years. Now joined by fellow Norwegian Robert Heggdal and Daryl Bamonte from the UK (who worked very closely with Depeche Mode and The Cure for several years), they deliver post-punk of the early ’80s.

Permafrost debuted with the “Godtment” EP in 1983, released on a limited edition of 50 numbered cassettes. In 2019, they followed up with the “Permafrost” EP on vinyl, later making it available digitally in 2021. Throughout 2021, the band dropped three singles. : “Femme Fatale”, “Closed Eyes” and “Restore Us”.

A chance meeting at a climate conference in Berlin in 2023 has led to the formation of the musical collective Hence. Behind the project we find advertising strategist Knuth who met music publisher Daryl Bamonte during a lunch conversation at said climate conference.

Knuth mentioned his recent purchase of modular synths despite having no musical experience and Bamonte encouraged him by saying, “Record something and I’ll release it.” Knuth simply responded, “OK!”

Yes, things can be very simple sometimes.

The debut single “Stuck In My Throat” will be released on 5th June 2024 on the duo’s newly-formed label, Cosmic Cassettes. It features Danish singer Kennie Orsted and Brooklyn-based Yasmin Haddad from NightNight. The release is rounded off with a remix by Portuguese electronic producer Phaser.

The track will be available through Cosmic Cassettes and distributed by Danmark Music Group, with publishing handled by Archangelo Music/BMG.

About Daryl Bamonte

Daryl Bamonte has a career spanning nearly four decades in the music industry. He began working with Depeche Mode, a band formed by his childhood friends, in 1980 while he was still in school. Over the next 15 years, he held various roles with the band, including tour manager and project manager, and even replaced Andy Fletcher as the keyboard player during the final legs of the Devotional Tour in 1994.

In addition to his work with Depeche Mode, Bamonte has been involved with The Cure, taking on broader roles such as executive producer for their self-titled album and the Trilogy DVD. In 2005, he founded Bamonte Artist Management, representing various musicians and bands, and later co-founded Archangelo Music, a label and publishing company, in 2021. He remains active as an artist manager and is also involved in the Norwegian post-punk band Permafrost as a keyboardist.

Bamonte also is an ambassador for Europe in Synch, a consultant for Schubert Music Europe, and is involved in several international music projects and conferences.

The UK based dark pop act debdepan has just released release their new three-song EP, “Omen”, via Bamala Newtown run by Daryl Bamonte.

The UK-based duo debdepan consists of Chelsea Tolhurst (vocals & guitar) and Grace Bontoft (bass & backing vocals), who create dark, melodic music inspired by Warpaint, Marika Hackman, The Cure, PJ Harvey, and The Big Moon. Note that Chelsea Tolhurst is not related to Lol Tolhurst, the former drummer and keyboardist of The Cure.

Taken from this 3-track EP is the song “The Goat” for which a video has now been made availabel.

debdepan is set to release their new three-song EP, “Omen”, available from 25th July 2023 via Bamala Newtown.

The duo utilised the lockdown period to compose songs, forming the band in March 2022 and promptly performing their first shows. They were spotted by Pie Factory Music’s Emerging Artists programme, which led to the release of their single “Darkest Hour” on the Wantsum Music? label on 16th September 2022. Shortly after, the duo signed a publishing and label deal with Archangelo Music, owned by Daryl Bamonte.

UPDATE: Depeche Mode officially announce new tour and album ‘Memento Mori’

When you see ticket reseller prepping things for a new tour you can be sure something is up. And indeed, in May 2021 a domain was registered to sell tickets for a 2023 Depeche Mode tour, we have monitored that domain for a while and a few weeks ago it went live indicating that something was coming up.

Known so far is that the tour will be called “Memento Mori Tour” and only a few cities (and first dates) where the band will land. In the list we got we found Leipzig (Red Bull Arena – 26 May 2023) and Frankfurt (Deutsche Bank Park Germany – 29 Jun 2023) followed by these cities which should see the band live at work in June or July 2023: London, Paris, Zurich,, Prague, Warsaw, Amsterdam, Vienna, Berlin, Munich and Cologne.

For Munich a poster surfaced which you can find below, it shows a June 20th 2023 date, and for Frankfurt there was also a poster that popped up in the street apparently.

You can expect more shows and solid dates pretty soon. For the band it will be the first time they start touring without Andy Fletcher who died in May this year. The only other period Fletcher didn’t play live with the band was when Daryl Bamonte took on his role for the remaining thirty-nine concerts of the Exotic Tour.

As for the title of the tour, ‘memento mori’ is Latin for ‘remember that you [have to] die’. It is an artistic or symbolic trope acting as a reminder of the inevitability of death. The most common motif is a skull, often accompanied by one or more bones. Often this alone is enough to evoke the trope, but other motifs such as a coffin, hourglass and wilting flowers signified the impermanence of human life.

A press conference in Berlin is in the making as well, tomorrow, and both David Gahan and Martin Gore left on a trip (to Europe) together as the video below (shot today in Los Angeles) shows.

In 2021, Dead Can Dance’s Lisa Gerrard released the “Burn” album with fellow DCD bandmate Jules Maxwell. She now has collaborated with composer Marcello De Francisci for the “Exaudia” album and signed with Atlantic Curve, a division of Schubert Music Europe, who will release the album on August 26. Note that the managing director of the label’s UK division is Daryl Bamonte from The Cure fame.

The first single from this album, “Until We Meet Again”, will be released on June 17.

Lisa Gerrard notes, “I met Marcello while I was composing for a film called ‘Kings’; he had wonderful engineering skills and I liked him as a person. After a while we decided to try composing together and went on to compose some film scores. I love the fact that Atlantic Curve do vinyl and were also very interested in pursuing the artistic side of the accompanying videos.”

Marcello De Francisci: “It has been an absolute gift to work alongside Lisa once again on this work, which we wrote very much with the intention to inspire her fan base both on the listening and cinematic end.”

Daryl Bamonte (Atlantic Curve, Label Head / Schubert Music Publishing UK, Managing Director): “After the great success we enjoyed with the ‘Burn’ album, I was honoured when Lisa got in touch to propose releasing ‘Exaudia’ on Atlantic Curve. The Norwegian post-punk act Permafrost follows up its recent release “Come Back To Surprise” with the Pyxis remix of the track which is out on Friday the 18th on their own Fear of Music label. Pyxis is the remix moniker of producer/mixer Paul Corkett.

About Paul Corkett

Paul Corkett got his start as an engineer in the mid-1980s, engineering singles and albums for bands as varied as ABC, The Chameleons, Twelfth Night and The Heart Throbs. He landed his first big engineering gig in 1992, recording the single “China” for Tori Amos’s debut album “Little Earthquakes”.

In 1994 he produced his first full album, the second album by Adorable. His engineering work on The Cure’s tenth album “Wild Mood Swings” led to him producing the band’s next album, “Bloodflowers”, released in 2000. After engineering Placebo’s second album “Without You I’m Nothing”, in 1999 Corkett was invited to produce the band’s third album “Black Market Music”.

The early 2000s saw him producing albums for small alternative British bands The Cooper Temple Clause, Biffy Clyro and Queenadreena. In 2012 he teamed up with Love Amongst Ruin frontman Steve Hewitt to engineer albums for French band Lys and Italian band Spiral 69.

Corkett often works at Moles Studio in Bath, having recorded albums by Billy No Mates, Queenadreena, Dionysos, Fiction Plane and Love Amongst Ruin there.

The new single is again produced by Permafrost and mixed by Paul Corkett (The Cure, Placebo, Nick Cave) and is released on the band’s own Fear of Music label, through TBC Records/Secretly Noord distribution.

Note that Daryl Bamonte is also involved in this project. We all know Daryl as the artist manager, known for working for Depeche Mode and the Cure. And of course also als the musical replacement for Andrew Fletcher in 1994 for the second leg of the US Devotional Tour, as well as six shows in South America.
