Nine years after the release of their first tribute to The Cure, titled “A Strange Play – Tribute to The Cure“, Alfa Matrix and Spleen+ have joined forces to create a follow-up tribute album. The second volume in the series, “A Strange Play (Vol. 2) – Tribute to The Cure“, features 27 tracks, including electro, synth pop, EBM acts from Alfa Matrix and cold wave, post-punk, and gothic rock bands from their Spleen+ division and is out now via Bandcamp, the label’s webstore and all other platforms.

The album includes reinterpretations of classic hits and lesser-known B-sides, shedding new light on the original tracks or giving them an entirely different sonic perspective. The tribute album itself this time is a collaborative effort between both established and emerging artists from the Alfa Matrix and Spleen+ rosters.

Compiled by and for The Cure fans, this new tribute adventure brings together a growing roster of Spleen+ artists, including Noemi Aurora, Star Industry, Imjudas, The Ultimate Dreamers, The Breath of Life, and Lovelorn Dolls. Additionally, the album features synth and electro cult acts, as well as upcoming Alfa Matrix artists, such as Neuroactive, Armageddon Dildos, Implant, Darkness on Demand (formerly Dance or Die), Helle9 (an Alien Vampires side-project), Metroland, Aesthetische featuring Zombie Girl, Aiboforcen, Technoir, Kant Kino, Digital Factor, Regenerator, Lights A.M (an Essence of Mind solo project), Neikka RPM, First Aid 4 Souls, Diffuzion, Avarice in Audio, Elektroklänge, Circumpolar, and Cosmic Armchair.

In conjunction with the release of “A Strange Play (Vol. 2),” goth-metal/darkwave act Lovelorn Dolls has released a single and accompanying video clip for their cover of “Lullaby.” The music video, created entirely using artificial intelligence, tells the story of a girl pursued by a mysterious, threatening, yet alluring man. The video’s creator, Kristell, was inspired by her own childhood experience of being both fascinated and frightened by The Cure’s original “Lullaby” music video.

Background/Info: “Bittersweet” is the final part of a trilogy which started with the album “Lightflare” (2018) followed by “Soul Searching” (2019). But the work is also meant to celebrate the twentieth anniversary of the Belgian project. There’s a bonus disc featuring fifteen surprising songs while the digital version  reveals fourteen extra tracks.

Content: The working formula of Psy’Aviah hasn’t really changed. Yves Schelpe composes the music while working with an impressive list of guest singers. The opening piece again features cavernous, spoken vocals by Dutch psychiatrist Dirk De Wachter. It’s a dark, dreamy intro followed by twelve, mainly, danceable cuts. The songs are meticulously elaborated and mainly Dance-driven, sometimes reminding me of the magic of Delerium. Olivya Nicole, Mari Kattman, Saydi Driggers, Lumi, Huong Su, Maysa, Marieke Lightband, Tina Forlorn, Eli Rho (2 songs), Rebecca Schneider and Addie Nicole contributed guest vocals while there also guest artists featured playing violin and cello. Notice by the way the tracklist features 2 ‘older’ reworked songs.

The bonus disc features Psy’Aviah songs taken from the wide discography of the band which have been all reworked -and in a way covered by an impressive list of artists. Madil Hardis, The Breath Of Life, Clairval, Your Life On Hold, IC434 (2 songs), Digital Factor, Aesthetische, KC Woong, Implant and Leather Strip contributed to this celebration while you’ll also hear collaborative tracks with Implant, Cat Hall and Bow Ever Down.

The digital format reveals extra songs featuring 808 Dot.Pop, Impulse Control Disorder, Fakzillity, Llumen, Miseram Mortem, Designer Violence, Hartung & Schleinitz, Y-Luk-O, Cosmic Armchair, Huilende Wolf, The Breath Of Life and Leather Strip plus 2 collaborative cuts together with Leather Strip and Implant.

+ + + : The main strength of “Bitter Sweet” is its ‘easy listening’ format. Psy’Aviah is nearly impossible to label -although hardly driven by a very personal approach of Dance music, but simply following its path. The project has seriously evolved throughout the years and the sound often appears a true challenge. The composition is well-crafted, styled, sensual for the slow rhythms and here again reveals an interesting and diversified list of talented singers. “Can we Make It Rhyme ” featuring Mari Kattman is a great piece of music reminding me a bit of Delerium. And I also want to mention “Tired” which is an older song that has been reworked and features passionate vocals by Addie Nicole (Hallocene).

I also have to salute the original concept of the bonus disc (and bonus songs for the digital edit) where the artists totally reworked the older Psy’Aviah songs while putting their own voice on it. The result is diversified but I especially recommend both cuts by IC434 and the one by Your Life On Hold.

– – – : The main strength of Psy’Aviah also appears to be its biggest weakness; hard to label and sometimes dangerously moving to the edge of pure ‘commercial’ Dance music. That’s why I often wonder if this is the right scene and label for this project? The bonus songs are a pretty cool commemoration although I’m missing Emélie Nicolaï who was the singer of the band during the first decade.

Conclusion: Psy’Aviah remains a true challenge although we can’t be unmoved by the creativity, ideas, concept and sound intelligence of this artist.

Best songs: “Can we Make It Rhyme”, “Tired – Rediscovered”, “Cold Summer Nights”, “The Wildness In Me” + “Broken Child” (IC 434), “Anger Management” (IC 434), “Our Common End” (Your Life On Hold), “The Worst In Me” (Leather Strip), “Wild Ride” (Llumen).

Background/Info: Singapore electro-dance-pop duo Cosmic Armchair remains one of the sonic aliens from the Alfa Matrix stable. This new EP features the title song “Cannonballs”, which was originally released on their last year released “Contact”-album.

Content: “Cannonballs” was not exactly my favorite cut from the album. It however sounds as a kind of ‘happy-pop’ song carried by a solid bass line and a cool chorus. The vocals of ‘Cosmic Jane’ add a fragile and somewhat sensual touch on top of the song.

We next get a remix by Avarice In Audio plus a “Club Mix”. The last song, “Fly Away” is another look back to “Contact” and has been remixed by Axiam (producer based in Singapore).

+ + + : “Cannonballs” as EP title track makes sense. The original version is an honest cut while the “Club Mix” injects an extra boost to the track. The song is somewhat darker than the usual dance-pop of the band. The remix by Avarice In Audio is cool and I think it’s the perfect band to remix Cosmic Armchair.

– – – : The remix of “Fly Away” doesn’t add any extra to this EP. We here move back to the pure dance-pop style of Cosmic Armchair, which can’t totally convince me.

Conclusion: “Cannonballs” is probably one of the best EP title-songs I’ve heard from Cosmic Armchair. That’s probably because it sounds a little darker, but especially less dance-like.

Best songs: “Cannonballs – Club Mix”.

Genre/Influences: Electro-pop, dance-pop.

Background/Info: Welcome to Singapore! ‘Cosmic Ben’ and ‘Cosmic Jane’ are back on track unleashing the second EP/single taken from the debut album “Contact” (2017). I wasn’t that impressed by this album although it revealed a mature electro-dance production.

Content: “Valentine” wasn’t my favorite song featured on “Contact”, but definitely the right song to release around Valentine’s Day. This song deals about ‘the sweetness and sorrow of reaching out and breaking through to a loved one’. In the end we all know love can be painful although Cosmic Armchair transpose this theme into a sweet- and wafting electro-pop song carried by the fragile vocals of their female singer.

We next get a somewhat jazzy-inspired remix by Japanese artist Yoshino Yoshikawa and a more techno/dance minded remix by the Singapore based artist Brannlum. Last, but not least the final song is an acoustic –piano, version of “Falling”, which was the title song of their previous EP and still a song featured on “ Contact”.

+ + + : “Valentine” is definitely not my favorite song from the “Contact”-album, but I reconciled myself a bit through this EP. It’s a sweet and emotional piece on, which I especially like Cosmic Jane’s timbre of voice. The danceable and techno-driven remix by Brannlum is an interesting version for the clubs.

– – – : I can’t get away from the idea that this song was chosen because of Valentine’s Day instead of being one of the biggest potential hits from “Contact”. In the end it’s more about strategy and promotion and that’s not necessarily a bad thing, but a way to reach a wider European audience. It however could have been more interesting to get remixes from more famous and familiar names from the scene. Imagine this song getting a remix treatment by label mates such as Komor Kommando, Ayria and Metroland…

Conclusion: You don’t always need to release the most club/dance orientated title song on an EP. “Valentine” is not a big hit, but a sweet song that feels as a relief in this stressed world.

Best songs: “Valentine – Brannlum Remix”, “Valentine”.

“Valentine” is a brand new super sweet single (available here on Bandcamp) by the rising Singapore synthpop act Cosmic Armchair. “Valentine” is the second single taken from the band’s recent electropop album “Contact” and features an eclectic set of Asian musicians creating a very versatile set.

The duo for instance collaborated with Yoshino Yoshikawa, a Tokyo based electronic music producer who offers a more downtempo lounge version of the title track. The second remix is by Brannlum, a Singapore based future bass producer and remixer (Jasmine Sokko, Veronica x Thieves), who offers a very danceable version of the Cosmic Armchair duo’s song.

The bonus track is an acoustic reworking of the band’s previous single “Falling”, with a piano performance by Bang Wenfu, one of Asia’s top music arrangers (Kit Chan, Jackie Cheung, A-Mei, S.H.E and Jolin Tsai).

Background/Info: Hailing from Singapore, Cosmic Armchair definitely is one of the most surprising bands from the Alfa Matrix roster. The band seems to be ‘hot’ and ‘successful’ in Asia while they’re rather unknown over the rest of the world. After several EP’s it’s now time to welcome the debut full length of Cosmic Armchair.

Content: The pop style of this band sounds pretty sweet while driven by the fragile vocals of their front woman. The songs mix typical elements of electro-pop with a rather solid dance part. Some passages are quite trance-minded, which only accentuates the danceable aspect of the work.

+ + + : It’s fantastic to discover electro-pop music from Singapore. Alfa Matrix clearly opens a window upon new electronic horizons. I can’t say that the sound is different from what we’re used to hearing in Europe –and probably other parts of the world. It simply remains electro-pop moving on the edge of dance music. I’m more into ‘harder’ dance cuts creating a sexy match with the female vocals. There also is a cool atmospheric part hanging over the songs. The tracks “Higher” and “Not You” both are cool and recommended dance pieces.

– – – : Cosmic Armchair might be one of the biggest challenges from the Alfa Matrix roster. The band is not that ‘underground’, but rather sounds like a commercial and/or dance production. Some passages are even pretty teenager-music like and I especially refer to “Just One Look (Club Mix)”.

Conclusion: I’m really wondering about the impact of this formation and their debut album at the European scene. It’s a cool production, but it rather sounds like an album for a different scene. Speaking for myself, I haven’t been convinced.

Best songs: “Not You”, “Higher”, “Conversations”.

Genre/Influences: Dark-electro, medieval-(h)el(l)ectro.

Background/Info: Behind Totem Obscura is hiding Pedro ‘Acylum’ Engel and his wife Nadine ‘Croona’ Engel. They’re both known for their work under the Acylum moniker, but Nadine recently also released a harsh and industrial new album as Aengeldust. “Nordische Fest” is the second opus of Totem Obscura.

Content: Totem Obscura is a bit to Heimataerde, like Acylum is to Wumpscut! “Nordische Feste” mixes dark-electronic elements together with medieval atmospheres. The German lyrics bring a gothic touch to the work. But the album is not excelling in power and sonic violence, but reveals overwhelming atmospheres and even melancholia. I sometimes get the impression Totem Obscura got inspired by the imaginary world of “Game Of Thrones” and I think to have recognized samplings from this famous series running through the album.

The album also features a song featuring Cosmic Armchair, which logically resulted in a more danceable approach. Another noticeable cut is “Helden” for featuring Hubert Kah (who did some backing vocals in the 80s for Sandra). Last, but not least you’ll discover remixes by Ruined Conflict, Hell:Sector and Crytek.

+ + + : I really admire the work and genius of Pedro Engel who according to me is one of the most talented musicians of his era dealing with dark-electronics. But he also is a man of many talents, which can accomplish much more than only Acylum tracks. I have to admit I expected this album to be a bit harder, but globally speaking I like the medieval atmospheres this album has been made of. I like the bleak mood recovering the songs, which feel like announcing a nearby disaster. It all sounds raw and tormented. The famous EP-song “Eisenmann” remains one of the major cuts of this album, but I also have to mention “Blut Marschiert” for its coldness. The medieval chants running through a few cuts inject an extra touch of mystery and visual appeal. Among the remixes I want to mention a great contribution by Ruined Conflict.

– – – : I expected a harder and powerful album, but that says more about me instead of the band. “Nordische Feste” is not the kind of work that will put dancefloors on fire (like early Heimataerde) although it’s a fascinating experience.

Conclusion: Totem Obscura transforms dark-electronic music into a medieval voyage and other fantasy universes. This is the perfect alternative soundtrack for “Game Of Thrones” or “The Lord Of The Rings”.

Best songs: “Eisenmann”, “Blut Marschiert”, “Bluttanz”, “Blut Marschiert – Ruined Conflict Remix”, “Gestandig”.

In June 2014 Alfa Matrix launched the EP “We Are Watching” by a brand new signing, Cosmic Armchair. The female fronted duo offers a very clean electropop which will please those into the sound of Technoir and related. Many readers will of course recognize the duo from the track “Just One Look” (in a club mix version) which was included in the famous Side-Line compilation “Face The Beat: Session 4”.

Next to this the band had a real club hit with the extremely attractive track “I Don’t Belong Here”, which also pushed them to work on a full album. That album is out now and can be ordered on CD via the Alfa Matrix webstore, or as download via Bandcamp and of course all other download stores.

You can expect a blend of synth-pop / electro dance / EDM / New Wave with sensual catchy female vocals which doesn’t need any comparisons really. It’s just good stuff that will please many!

The 16th track on our free download compilation “Face The Beat: Session 4” (featuring 92 tracks) is by the excellent Singapore based female fronted electro pop act Cosmic Armchair which bring an excellent mix of electro pop with subtle dance elements.

The track is taken from the band’s recent single “I Don’t Belong Here” out via Alfa Matrix as a download only single. We are now awaiting their full albums which will hopefully reach us somewhere next year. The band is already very well established in Asia through numerous live performances, radio and TV shows and various international collaborations, proving that not only Scandinavian acts can produce slick electro pop.
