Background/Info: Korinthians is a new Belgian band I discovered by this debut album featuring ten songs.

Content: From the very first notes and songs Korinthians remind me of the imaginary hybrid between The Editors, Placebo and Depeche Mode. But this band is not an emulation of any of the aforementioned bands, but I just give some references they make me think about. The songs are carried by powerful and elevating guitar playing while accomplished with melodic Electro arrangements. The charismatic vocals create a perfect match with the music. There’s something to say about nearly every single song –and even the cover version of Joy Division’s “A Means To An End” has been masterfully accomplished.

+ + + : It’s a pleasure discovering new talents and Korinthians have something extra. This band has the potential to become the ‘Belgian next big thing’ after Whispering Sons. Both aren’t comparable in style and approach, but they simply distinguish themselves from the rest. Every single detail sounds right and at the right place. “Icarus Airlines” is the absolute ‘hit’ of the work; a catchy, powerful song with some lyrical content as a reflection about the world we’re living in. But I can also mention “You And Island” for its progression and sensitive side or “Aura H671” for the empowering guitar playing. The aforementioned cover of “A Means To An End” is easily recognizable, but I especially like the way Korinthians transposed the original song into their own style. This album sounds mature and totally accomplished! Respect guys!

– – – : My only little regret –if there’s one to mention, is the rather poorly inspired last song… which also is the title song of the album; strange!

Conclusion: Korinthians” is a band to keep in mind while “Chaos Control” is a true earworm!

Korinthians is a post-punk band from Ghent, Belgium, formed around vocalist/guitarist Mattias De Backer and drummer Kenny. The band self-released the 7-inch single “A Way With Words” in 2017 before issuing its debut album “Chaos Control” in 2020. Korinthians followed with “A Major Walk” in 2023, previewed by the single “No Future”, and appeared on the 2025 compilation box set “Resurgence”.

The 4th edition of the W-Festival will take place from 15th until 18th August 2019 in Waregem Expo, Belgium. About 70 new wave, EBM, industrial, post-punk, synth-pop and eighties bands are featured on 3 stages.

Whispering Sons – Image (CD Album – Smile Records)

Genre/Influences: Cold-wave, post-punk. Background/Info: The Brussels based Whispering Sons were set up in 2013 and became one of Belgian hottest newcomers from the past few years. They won a very famous national contest, released two singles (on Weyrd Son Records and one EP (on Wool-E-Tapes), became a successful live band (in Belgium, but also abroad) and now signed to the German Smile Records to unleash their debut album. The album has been released in the USA on Cleopatra. Content: “Image” features 10 songs, which from start on clearly evoke some of the darkest bands from the 80s cold-wave movement. The typical, mewing guitar parts are sometimes evoking The Sisters Of Mercy while the low, resonating bass play definitely sounds as cold as death. The songs have been progressively built up and nearly always reaching a total apotheosis. Some cuts have something trance-like; a bit comparable to the sensation of elevation. On top of it all you’ll hear the dark and growling timbre of voice of their female singer Fenne Kuppens. + + + : Whispering Sons confirm on their debut album all their potential. This band is probably one of the darkest ones I’ve heard in years. It clearly sounds inspired by the most obscure and chilling cold-wave music from the 80s, but they still have something very personal. The guitar parts are simply genius. There’s a kind of power emerging from the guitar playing, which becomes magic. It has a real impact on the listener and that’s probably why I sometimes experience it as ‘trance’-like. But be careful because this album also has something suicidal. The ultra dark atmosphere hanging over the music is not exactly the kind of thing that will get you happy… Well, that’s just what I like to hear when listening to this kind of music and that’s what reminds me of The Sisters Of Mercy, Joy Division, Bauhaus and co. Last, but not least, Whispering Sons didn’t spare any effort to release a real opus magnum, recording their work in a professional studio while assisted by real professionals (like the mix done by Bert Libeert from Goose). – – – : I don’t have any single minus point about the songs properly speaking, but there’s just one little intriguing point about this work. Despite of the professional recording and crew I get the impression the global mix could have been better. It can be something intentional to recreate the original sound of the 80s. Conclusion: Whispering Sons confirm on “Image” their talent and this band could simply become one of the new leaders in their music genre. “Image” definitely is a major release from 2018! Best songs: “Hollow”, “Waste”, “Stalemate”, “Alone”, “No Time”. Rate: (8½). Whispering Sons is a Belgian post-punk band formed in 2013, based between Helchteren and Leuven. The line-up features Fenne Kuppens on vocals, Kobe Lijnen on guitar, Sander Hermans on synths, Lander Paesen on bass and Sander Pelsmaekers on drums. The group’s debut EP, “Endless Party”, was released in December 2015 on Wool-E Tapes and reissued on vinyl through Minimal Maximal in March 2016, around the time the band won Humo’s Rock Rally, a well-known Belgian music contest.

Whispering Sons’ debut album, “Image,” reviewed here, followed in 2018 on the German label Smile Records, with a US edition released through Cleopatra Records. The band’s next new material, the single “Surface,” followed in 2021.

On Saturday December 1st the Limburghal (Jaarbeurslaan 6) in Genk (BE) will host the 5th edition of the Sinner’s Day Festival.

The following artists are featured in the line-up: MC50, John Cale, Gang Of Four, GBH, Cabaret Voltaire, Fischer Z, Claw Boys Claw, Wolfgang Flür (ex-Kraftwerk). There’s also a Belgian stage featuring: Vive La Fête, Whispering Sons, Cocaine Piss, Red Zebra, Funeral Dress, De Brassers, O Veux and Marcel Vanthilt.

Berlin to host 9th Dark Spring Festival on 24th March 2018 at the Bi Nuu Club

Fans of dark, atmospheric guitar music should add the 24 of March 2018 in their agenda as Golden Apes will host the 9th edition of the Dark Spring Festival at the Berlin-based Bi Nuu Club.

Playing live will be Motorama (RUS), Whispering Sons (BE), Golden Apes (DE), A Projection (SWE) and Sweet Ermengarde (DE). For those of you which don’t know Motorama, the band is by far the best-known representatives of the Russian Post Punk/New Wave scene.

The festival will continue in the late hours with DJs Thomas Thyssen (Pagan Love Songs) and Jürgen Jakob (Cold Beat Berlin) with a mix of goth, wave, post-punk and indie-classics.

Doganov remix on new EP of Goose!

Doganov, the unsigned Belgian industrial-metal/new-wave/electro band, made a great remix of the Goose song “What You Need”. Goose chose both remixes of B-Sights and Doganov as winners out of 117 participants of a remix contest, organised by Belgian radio station Studio Brussel.

The remix will be part of the soon to be released “What You Need” remix-EP of Goose (featuring other bands such as Digitalism)!

Belgian post-punk act Whispering Sons to launch ‘Endless Party’ album on vinyl+CD

Whispering Sons is a Belgian post-punk band formed in 2013. Their first EP “Endless Party” was released in December 2015 on Wool-E Tapes and was reissued on vinyl in March 2016 through Minimal Maximal but sold out since then. Now that the band has won Humo’s Rock Rally, a well-known music competition in Belgium, the album is being re-released again, now holding an extra CD next to the vinyl version.
