After a succession of EPs and singles, UK synthpop group Magnetic Skies are gearing up to launch their inaugural album, “Empire Falling,” available from 3rd November.

Originally conceived in 2019 as a studio-focused venture by lead singer and keyboardist Simon Kent along with Jo Womar, also on keys, the duo were motivated by a mutual appreciation for 1980s synth-infused post-punk music. They commenced crafting their distinctive sound, releasing a series of EPs throughout 2020. As time progressed, the outfit transitioned to live performances, incorporating guitarist Carlos Aguilar and drummer Lenin Alegria into their ensemble. This expanded line-up is responsible for their first full-length album, “Empire Falling,” set for release on 3rd November. The album’s production and mixing were largely undertaken by Kent himself, with supplementary mixing contributions from Rob Aubrey, known for his engineering work with Big Big Train, Asia, and Tony Levin.

Speaking about the album, frontman Simon Kent remarks, “The record is introspective, lyrical, and guides the listener on an emotional odyssey, ranging from melancholic nostalgia to joy and elation. My aspiration is for the audience to connect with the music and lyrics on a personal level and to evoke emotional resonance. This album serves as an apt conclusion to the band’s formative chapter, encapsulating the musical evolution that took place as we transitioned from a duo to a quartet, and as we learned to collaborate effectively.”

The album also features the band’s debut single for 2023, “You Shine On,” along with an earlier single, “Suffocate.” Additional tracks include ‘The KVB Remix’ of “The Last Time,” as well as Magnetic Mix versions of “Into Paradise,” “You Shine On,” and “Darker Night.”

The New York City based duo R. Missing have released a cover version of Siouxsie And The Banshees’ hit single “Spellbound”. R. Missing’s version is what they call “a downtempo, darkwave answer to the frenetic, post-punk pace of the original”.

“Spellbound” is the follow-up single to July’s “My Time as a Ghostly Someone Else” and serves as the titular track from the upcoming full-length “Spellbound – A Tribute To Siouxsie & The Banshees”, available worldwide on August 25th. This compilation showcases contributions from bands such as Kap Bambino, The KVB, and Night Beats, alongside music veterans, including former Banshee, Jon Klein, who joins forces with PiL bassist, Jah Wobble, plus Xiu Xiu, Skold, and many more.

R. Missing is comprised of vocalist/bassist, Sharon Shy, and multi-instrumentalist Toppy Frost. R. Missing is the duo’s latest creative innovation, emerging from the Morrissey-influenced, indie rock shadows of their previous project, The Ropes.

Background/Info: French Formation Blind Delon are back unleashing their third full length. They already signed to another label while the line-up of the band has also changed. Blind Delon is now featuring core members Mathis Kolkoz (vocals, guitar) and ‘Coco’ Thiburs (bass) and new member Thom Mayor (synths, guitar).

Content: The new work rather sounds in prolongation to the previous album “Chimères” than their debut opus “Discipline” which was driven by Minimal-Electronics. The album sounds more into pure Dark-Wave but remains connected with Electronics. I also noticed a few passages moving into Psychedelic-Rock. The work is diversified although homogenous. Several songs of the album have been accomplished with guests Fivequestionmarks, Curses, Maenad Veyl (label owner), The KVB and Poison Point.

+ + + : This is without a shadow of a doubt the most varied album by Blind Delon. Even if Dark-Wave remains the common thread between the songs you’ll find diversity everywhere; now being more Electronic orientated, then Cinematic, next moving into Psychedelia and even carried by solid, aggressive, electronic bass lines. I personally like the Electro-Minimalism mixed with dark-Wabe influences of “La Violence” featuring Fivequestionmarks plus the aggressively-driven “Le Sarcasme”.

– – – : Diversity is cool but I can’t get away from the idea the band is sometimes still in search of a their own sound. The album is enjoyable but missing a true climax.

Conclusion: The least we can say is that Blind Delon never repeats themselves but still sounds like experimenting with Dark-Wave.

Best songs: “La Violence” featuring Fivequestionmarks, “Le Sarcasme”, “La Mort” featuring Curses, “La Noyade”.

The new single from London-based synthpop outfit Magnetic Skies, “Suffocate”, is out today via ReprinT Records. The single follows the band’s previous single “You Shine On” and is a teaser for Magnetic Skies’ debut album “Empire Falling” which is set for release in autumn 2023.

Lead singer Simon Kent explains the track: “The song is about a relationship that breaks down. At the start, everything is incredible and you throw yourself head-first into that and nothing else matters, you just want this dream to come true. Then things change, reality sets in and everything around that falls apart to devastating effect. We wanted a dark, agitated, claustrophobic video – devoid of colour – to complement the emotions in the song.”

Magnetic Skies was formed in 2019 by Simon Kent (vocals & keyboards) and Jo Womar (keyboards). The duo spent most of that first year locked away in studios, experimenting with material that would evolve into songs released over a set of EPs during 2020. “Dreams And Memories”, “Hold On” and “Into Paradise” all set the tone and showcased the duo’s love for vintage analogue synths and pumping basses. 2021 saw the band evolve into a 4-piece, with the recruitment of guitarist Carlos Aguilar and drummer Lenin Alegria. Both are featured on the new recordings.

2022 saw the band supporting Altered Images, Heaven 17 and ACTORS, as well as releasing five more singles – including a collaboration with The KVB.

Following up on their first ever US tour last October in support of their studio album “Body Machine”, the dark wave act Priest are back with a brand-new single, a cover of Depeche Mode’s “Personal Jesus”, on Cleopatra Records.

The band explains the choice for the cover as follows: “‘Personal Jesus’ is one of those timeless tracks that seem to always have been there. When we got the chance to cover a Depeche Mode song we got a bit sweaty – how should you even approach it? We took away the guitar, most iconic part of the song and replaced it with a Moog synthesizer! It resulted in a more gritty, hard hitting version. This is a homage to the band I think have influenced us the most.”

Priest’s cover is the first song to be released from the forthcoming (March 17) Depeche Mode tribute album, “All I Ever Wanted – A Tribute To Depeche Mode”, which will feature tracks covered by Lebanon Hanover, Skold, Xiu Xiu, The Kvb and more.

The post-punk / dark electronic music festival Absolution has announced it’s full line up and dates.

Absolution will be taking place October 6th-8th in Tampa (Ybor City), FL. In it’s third year, the festival is once again featuring acts within the post-punk, industrial, darkwave, and synthpop genres.

Headlining Absolution this year will be UK artists The KVB, French EBM act Minuit Machine, and post-punk Californians Creux Lies. The festival also features special performances from Italian darkwave/post-punk artists Hapax, and UK synthpop group Empathy Test. Additional artists playing include The Foreign Resort, Traitrs, Bestial Mouths, The French Police, SYZYGYX, XTR Human, Corlyx, Glass Spells, Hexheart, The Purge, Die Robot, Violent Vickie, and Element 104.

KILL YOUR BOYFRIEND has been set up in 2011. The Italian formation went through a few line-up changes and is now driven by the duo Matteo Scarpa – Antonio Angeli. By the end of last year they released their newest album “Killadelica”, which is a dark and powerful mix of Shoegaze, Post-Punk and Psychedelic music, but still exploring Industrial-, Ritual- and Experimental paths. The work reveals an impressive progression and maturity, becoming one of my 2020 favorites. I’d a chat with Matteo and Antonio.

Q: KILL YOUR BOYFRIEND has been set up in 2011. How did you come to set up the band and what have been the main facts from the past ten years?

KYB: It all started with the idea of creating a band that could mix the structure of the ‘No-Wave’ songs with Psychedelic-Noise guitars. We were lucky because we found a good chemistry and quickly were able to self-produce our first 6-song EP (September 2011) and started playing live in clubs and festivals around Italy.

It was with our first album “S / T” released by Shyrec in 2013 that we started to be recognized and played over 80 shows; also in other European countries, but mainly in Germany.

2015 was the year of the 10″-split with NEW CANDYS and our second album “The King Is Dead” (Shyrec) produced in collaboration with Luca Giovanardi (JULIE’S HAIRCUT). In the same years we participated to some great festivals as “Musical Zoo” in Brescia, opening for bands like THE KVB and ZOLA JESUS.

From 2016 to 2018 we performed extensively throughout Europe and did a couple of concerts in Russia (Moscow and St. Petersburg). During this time we met bands like PREOCCUPATIONS, ZU, CIVIL CIVIC and many other great artists. Meanwhile we have released our second EP “Ghosts” (2016 – Shyrec) and a 7″-single, “Ulrich” (2017) on the Russian label Other Voices Records.

At the end of 2019 the British label Depths Records released our single “Elizabeth”, which includes a remix of the same song by PREOCCUPATION’s guitarist Danny Christiansen and we played some shows in the UK as well.

The new album “Killadelica” was released on November, 6th, 2020 by the labels Sister9 Recordings (UK), Little Cloud Records (US) and Shryec (ITA).

Q: A few changes happened in the line-up. How does it feel to work as a duo and what makes the chemistry between you both?

KYB: Luckily there’s a great chemistry between both of us; in both songwriting and touring life, but there’re two other different aspects you need to consider. It’s easier to work with just two heads when deciding what is the best move for the band; apart from loading the car it’s better to have more help… do you agree? Getting back to your question, we have the same reasons and we respect each other and therefore, in our opinion, these are the reasons that led us to work this way.

Q: By the end of 2020 you released your new album “Killadelica”. Can you give us more details about the title of the album plus the titles of the songs (which like on previous works are often first names)? What have been the different stages to accomplish this work?

KYB: After choosing the band name -KILL YOUR BOYFRIEND is based on a graphic novel created by Grant Morrison and Philip Bond published by Vertigo-DC Comics, we thought it would be fun to create a list of ‘boyfriends’ to name the songs after. Thus, in the first releases, we tried to transpose the feelings experienced by the victims into music.

Instead for this album we changed our point of view. So we didn’t talk about the emotions felt by the ‘boyfriends’, but by their killers. We started doing extensive research to study all the stories we found about real black widows and more. We have to be honest and admit that some stories are drawn from ancient mythology, movies or even comics.

For the title of the album we wanted to mix the word ‘kill’ with something that could resemble the word ‘Psychedelic’ and honestly it’s also inspired by one of PRIMAL SCREAM’s masterpieces, “Screamadelica”.

Q: I personally consider “Killadelica” as your most mature- and best album to date! There’s such a great balance between guitar play and electronics featuring haunting vocals on top. Can you give us more details about the writing of the songs and the potential sources of inspiration?

KYB: We are really proud of “Killadelica” and thank you for your words about it. To answer to your question, as we said in the previous one, we have done a long research. We chose the stories following empathy. Our main idea was that “Killadelica” should have a kind of roller coaster of different emotions. This is probably why all the songs aren’t that similar to each other, even though they have the same dark and Psychedelic heart.

Q: How do you see yourself as musicians? When do you know a song/album is finished? Do you feel some aspects of the production could have been done a different way when you’re listening to the album right now?  

KYB: Due to this pandemic crisis we’re facing, unfortunately it’s not easy to live as musicians or artists in general. We miss the stage and the people we meet on tours. On the other hand, we have a lot of time to work on some new songs and other projects as well.

However, we usually start overproducing each song. Then, following the idea ‘less is more’, we cut all the tracks that give nothing. This is the right moment when we understand that the work is complete. But honestly, it has happened in the past that we would have liked to change something in the final mixes, especially in some of the early songs. Luckily it hasn’t happened with “Killadelica” until now and probably the reason is because we focused the concept immediately before starting to compose the album.

Q: A few new clips have been released. Is there a link between the clips and the lyrical content of the songs and what did you try to express by a clip?

KYB:We like it when the clips reflect the lyrics, but especially the mood of the song and we normally try to follow this idea. The two videos we made for “Elizabeth” and “Jean”, the first two singles taken from “Killadelica”, are based on the female figure shown in two different ways. In the first clip the woman is driven to the madness that led her to commit a murder, in the second the main theme is the suffocation felt by the characters.

Q: What are the further plans and especially ‘post-Corona’?

KYB: We are working on a new video/single taken from “Killadelica” and as we wrote before we are also composing some new songs and working on some new projects.

As a journalist I think it’s not my goal to only speak about ‘famous’ and/or ‘established’ artists, but still to make you discover new talents. Egoprisme is a French solo-project set up and driven by Jean-Marc Le Droff. The debut album “Among Noise” released on the French label Manic Depression Records revealed a great mix of cold, vintage electronics and typical dark-wave guitar parts. Egoprisme is not innovating, but simply getting us back to the thrilling period of the 80s. It’s a great sonic trip, which got me curious to know a bit more about this project.

Q: Can you briefly introduce yourself and give us some background information about your music ‘career’ which finally lead to Egoprisme?

JM: I am a 39 years old French musician based in Brest, France. I have a classical music background, then I moved to Rock and Electronic music. Egoprisme is a recent solo-project, and the result of various musical experiments and collaborations. It started in my home studio three years ago. Since then, I’ve been performing in many clubs in France and more recently in Berlin and Warsaw. I released two EP’s in 2015 and 2016 on Beko Disques, a French label based in Brest. My third EP, “Once You Get There”, was released in 2017 on TONN Recordings, an independent label based in Belfast, Ireland. Last January, I released a 15 tracks album, “Among Noise”, on Manic Depression Records, an independent label based in Paris.

Q: What means Egoprisme to you and what kind of music/sound did you want to compose?

JM: The word Egoprisme is a reminder that you’re always influenced by your own background, which often leads to false appreciations of situations. According to me, it’s a synth-wave project, rather club-oriented, and merging a post-punk guitar, cold-wave electronic sounds and lyrics in French and English.

Q: The influences running through “Among Noise” clearly sound pretty 80s inspired. Tell us a bit more about the inspiration, writing and global production of this work?

JM: I grew up in the early 80’s, so I guess I’ve been highly influenced by the emergence of midi-synths that were used at this time. The inspiration came out of artists like John Maus, the KVB, Boy Harsher, Lebanon Hanover, but also Prince, David Bowie or Depeche Mode. Inspiration also came from collaborations, like the one we have with Mode in Gliany in our side project called Premier Mouvement, or with the performer Rula El Bahr. The composition has been quite a long process that oscillated between home studio and stage, as I like to test new songs on stage before working on them back in studio. I produced this album mostly alone in my home studio, but always submitted new songs to a short panel of friends, among whom Christophe Galès which helped me with the mixing and did the mastering.

Q: Egoprisme is a solo-project although you got some help from a few guest artists to achieve the album. What are the main advantages and disadvantages to compose songs on your own and how do you transpose a solo-project on stage?

JM: I like to be autonomous in the various processes of composition, but I also feel the need of working with other artists, to confront ways of working and find new directions. It’s not a problem for me to be alone on stage, as I always plan the way I’m gone play a new song on stage while I compose new tracks. But it’s also always fun to have guests on stage when possible, even if it’s often more difficult to achieve in terms of logistics…

Q: I noticed some discrepancy between your music which is pretty ‘retro/80s’ like and the cover/artwork of the album, which is more styled and into ‘modernism’. Tell us a bit more the artwork and its importance?

JM: The artwork has been made by a friend of mine called Baptiste Stephan. I like the way he graphically interpreted my universe without using the general codes of cold-wave or dark-wave. I like the elegance of his work on this album, which reminds me of Bauhaus and looks timeless to me.

Q: We all know it’s pretty hard for ‘new’ artists/bands to catch the attention of a wider audience. Are you aware of this aspect and how do you manage it plus what do you expect from “Among Noise” for the further development of your career?

JM: Indeed, it’s pretty hard to catch attention, but it is definitely not my first goal. I’m a rather discreet person, and don’t like excessive promotion. My music is spread around so sometimes people who like it are spreading it again so in the end you can catch a wider audience.. My goal isn’t to become famous, but to share feelings through music, to have fun, to meet fantastic people and to travel thanks to my music. I see “Among Noise” as good way move forward in this approach, and Manic Depression Records helped me a lot in making my work visible to a wider audience.

The U.K. minimal electro shoegaze duo the KVB which formed in 2010 will return with a new album, “Of Desire”, by mid-March. On the new album the duo consisting of Nicholas Wood and Kat Day will further explore their sound which mixes blurred guitars with fat electronic bleeps and layers.

The album will be out both on vinyl (available here) and on CD (available here).

The KVB got started with a number of limited cassette and vinyl releases before their first full-length, “Always Then”, arrived in 2012. Two more albums, “Immaterial Visions” and “Minus One”, arrived the following year. “Minus One” held material that had surfaced before in the form of digital downloads and extremely limited cassettes. In 2014, the duo ventured to Brian Jonestown Massacre mastermind Anton Newcombe’s Berlin studio to work on the “Out of Body” EP, released later that year on Newcombe’s own A Records label. The KVB collected some of the more experimental output they recorded in 2014 on “Mirror Being”, which Invada released in June of the following year.
