Genre/Influences: D’n’B, Industrial.

Format: Digital.

Background/Info: American Stephen James Knight better known under the Edgey moniker strikes back with four new cuts.

Content: “Silo” sounds a bit different than previous production although the work remains driven by very energetic D’n’B sound patterns. But the energy or power has been replaced by darker atmospheres which is mainly noticeable at the debut cut. Quite progressively “Silo” becomes heavier and always pushed by heavy sound blasts.

+ + + : The title track opening the EP is a great piece of music and even one of my all time Edgey’s favorites. It sounds more Industrial and supported with a dense, dark, atmosphere. I also enjoy the Industrial-D’n’B approach of the artist and especially his low, vibrating sound blasts.

– – – : Edgey remains a heavy sonic experience which is not suited for a wide audience.

Conclusion: Edgey remains easily recognizable but seems to explore darker paths.

Best songs: “Silo”, “Filth Brick”.

Rate: 7½.

Artist: www.facebook.com/edgey.net

“Silo” was self-released on 11 February 2022 as a four-track digital EP. The running order is “silo”, “meak zero”, “filth brick” and “black ice”.

Listen to “Silo”:

About Edgey

Edgey is the recording name of American electronic musician and producer Stephen James Knight. The project moves across breakcore, drum and bass, IDM, rhythmic noise and industrial, and Knight has kept the catalogue on his own Bandcamp page, where releases such as “Square Form Annihilations”, “Misfire”, “Darkness” and the “Singles” series sit alongside the newer material.

“Silo” followed a break from recording. Knight rebuilt the studio around modular synthesis and stepped away from the computer for these four tracks, which run slower and heavier than the earlier drum and bass material and lean on dub and jungle rhythms. The EP appeared on 11 February 2022.

Genre/Influences: Breakcore, Industrial.

Format: Digital.

Background/Info: Stephen James Knight aka Edgey self-released “Idiom” at the end of 2020. The sonic terrorist achieved four new cuts.

Content: Defining the music of Edgey isn’t an easy thing, but on the other hand you can’t get away from the feeling he clearly brings Breakcore and Industrial together. His work always features dynamic rhythms and an impressive sonic canvas. Even the slowest passages of the EP have something raw, unpolished and evil. The last track also is the longest one, on which he injected fragmented vocal parts (samples?).

+ + + : Edgey remains a very unique experience in sound, which is nearly impossible to label; the sound being too Breakcore for Industrial lovers and maybe too Industrial for Breakcore freaks. But there’s no compromise, but just powerful music and that’s the main strength of the project. I especially like both last cuts. I however have a preference for “1999++” for its impressive final part.

– – – : There’s no way in between with Edgey: you are going to like it or not! It remains a challenging experience, but a very unique one in its genre.

Conclusion: Edgey sounds like a bulldozer on a highway… hard, brutal and merciless!

Best songs: “1999++”, “tri – p”.

Rate: 7.

About Edgey

Edgey is the breakcore and industrial project of American producer Stephen James Knight. His earliest credited appearances date to 1999 and 2001 on the compilations “Live Wire – A Presentation of L.I. Electronic Music” and “ChaoRin Kombat – Phase One / Issue One: 2001”, and he later featured on “You Are Here: A Compilation Of New York Electronics” for Connexion Bizarre in 2008.

The German label Hands Productions released three of his albums: “Square Form Annihilations” in 2005, “Flawed” in 2007 and “Misfire” in 2010. “The Abuse Technique” appeared on Hive Records in 2006. He also contributed tracks to the Hands compilations “Forms Of Hands 06”, “Forms Of Hands 07” and “Forms Of Hands 09”, to “Maschinenfest 2005” and “Maschinenfest 2010”, and to “Kinetik Festival Volume Three” on Artoffact Records in 2010.

Since the mid-2010s Knight has released mainly on his own, issuing the four “Singles” collections, the “Dirt303” reissue in 2018 and “Structures In Rust” in 2019. The “Darkness” EP arrived in 2020, and the four-track “Idiom” EP followed on 18 December 2020 as a WAV download, holding “Lorenz ρ σ β”, “+ RMS Length”, “Tri – P” and “1999 ++”. Later work includes the “Hyperpetual” EP in 2021, “Nervös” on darkstep.org in 2022, “Everything And Nothing” in 2023 and “Zerrüttet” in 2024.

Genre/Influences: Industrial, Gabber, Breakcore.

Format: Digital.

Background/Info: Stephen James Knight better known under his sonic brainchild Edgey has already been active for or more or less twenty years. He released noticeable productions on labels like Hands, Hive Records ao. “Everything Is Broken” was released at the end of 2020 and features four cuts.

Content: The American sonic terrorist holds on his merciless ‘hardcore’ approach, mixing elements of Industrial- and gabber music. A few fragmented spoken samples have been used here and there. The songs stand for true sonic mayhem, which however has been mixed with a simple tune on one of the tracks (cf. “Powerhouse”).

+ + + : Edgey is pure energy and sonic aggression! It reminds me of the productions the artist released during his Hands period. It even has something retro-like; where numerous artists are actually experimenting with hard Techno influences, Edgey holds onto its good-old receipt. I have a little preference for “Powerhouse”, which I can’t consider as atypical, but just a bit more elaborated and less brutal. The die-hard fans will be more pleased with “Police State” and “Lock Down”.

– – – : Edgey remains an experiment in sound, which is hardly accessible for a wider audience.

Conclusion: Call it a somewhat forgotten and lost exposure of Industrial music or simply brutal hardcore!

Best songs: “Powerhouse”.

Rate: (7).

About Edgey

Edgey is a New York-based solo industrial/EBM project with releases dating back to at least 2002 (“Mass Target”), including “Square Form Annihilations” (Hands Productions, 2005), “The Abuse Technique” (Hive Records, 2006), “Flawed” (Hands Productions, 2007) and “Misfire” (Hands Productions, 2010).

“Everything Is Broken” was self-released on 16 October 2020 and later expanded with 2023 “REDUX” remixes of “Police State” and “Disperse”. Edgey followed it with the “Idiom” EP in November 2021.

Background/Info:
Kai
Hahnewald will always be linked to his major project S.K.E.T., but “Within And
Beyond” is already the fourth full length album of his Talvekoidik project. It
even becomes a double disc featuring ten new cuts at the
main disc and ten remixes at the bonus disc.

Content:
Talvekoidik
can’t be compared in any single way with the power and energy of S.K.E.T. This
is music to listen to, but each new album brings a new focus. This work clearly
reminds me to a soundtrack. It’s a very cinematographic experience, which is
carried by slow rhythmics.

The
bonus disc is not just an album with remixes. It features songs from the
different Talvekoidik albums, which have been remixed by artists such as
SubtractiveLAD, Leitmotiv Rainbow, Infienity and Edgey while the other cuts
have been remixed by Kai Hahnewald or are just different versions.

+
+ + : The slow rhythms carrying the songs is an important aspect of the work.
It’s not just a classical cinematographic or ambient release, but one, which
has been empowered reaching a more accessible format. It also has something
minimal-like, but it’s the right music to get merged with a visual performance.
The bonus disc is an interesting way to get back to ‘older’ cuts, which have
been reworked/remixed into a refreshing format. I especially enjoyed the harder
and somewhat d’n’b remix of “That’s My Desire” by Edgey.

–
– – : Some passages are a bit long in duration and even monotonous and that’s
because this work really needs to get accomplished with a visual performance.

Conclusion:
This
album brings some diversity at the Hands roster, which is mainly dominated by
industrial-techno music during the past few months (years…). I’m not saying
this album is a groundbreaking opus, but it’s a pleasant listening.

Best
songs: “In November”, “Set Sail To Gotland”, “Breathe With Relief” + “That’s My
Desire – Edgey Remix”, “Atlas – Version”, “The Mobius Strip – Version”, “Rising
The Tension – SubtractiveLAD Remix”.
