Out now via Bandcamp as a free download is DJ Shane Aungst’s “Electronic Bodies – Nightside Sessions” mega-mix. The Seattle (United States) based DJ produced this 2-part megamix including 23 tracks (and 2 intros) from “Electronic Bodies” during long evening sessions in October 2023. Note that the intros were created by Viscera Drip.

As you will know the original “Electronic Bodies” compilation (available here on Bandcamp) focused on EBM and its offspring. The proceedings of this mega-mix will equally go to charity.

Shane’s mixes mainly deal in the EBM/Aggrotech/Industrial genres, and come with heavy layers of sampling and edits. He has been doing studio work, working on sampling, mixes, edits, remixes, as well as putting together some original material. We will soon also publish an interview with Shane on his current and future work. Check his Instagram page for more info.

Trepanation Recordings has announced the imminent release of “The Anchorhold Dissolution” by Leicester (UK) based Phil Stiles versus Seattle (USA) based DJ Shane Aungst on digital download and limited edition CD on 10th June. You can pre-order your copy, as well as a bundle featuring “The Anchorhold” and “The Anchorhold Dissolution”, right here from Bandcamp.

For this release the duo was influenced by the likes of Nine Inch Nail’s “Fixed” and Massive Attack Vs The Mad Professor. “Dissolution” is a fresh take on 2021’s “The Anchorhold” album with DJ Shane Aungst rebuilding the album from the ground up, remixing each of the pieces and adjusting the running order to create something entirely new. As we all know the splendid work Shane Aungst has delivered for our “Face The Beat” series, you can be sure that this album follows the same quality path.

Phil actually first encountered Shane via his remixwork for our very own “Face the Beat” series, produced in conjunction with Side-Line Magazine.

The result was not unlike the original Anchorhold collaborations, where each of the guest artists brought something wholly unique to the record, and the pair began talking. Initially, the idea was for Shane to remix one or two songs, but in the end ideas for a grander project formed – a full album remix that would allow Shane to put his own stamp on the whole record. The musical conclusion is “The Anchorhold Dissolution” billed as ‘Phil Stiles Vs Shane Aungst’.

Of the project, Phil said: “I honestly never expected that Shane would have the time or the interest to create an entirely new vision for the album. When we started talking, it was one of our various late-night rambles and we were chatting about some of the artists that we both love. Perhaps inevitably Nine Inch Nails came up, and we started talking about how amazing it was that Trent was able to present versions of his records that were substantially different and yet really added something to the experience.
The next thing I know, Shane starts sending through these amazing versions of songs from The Anchorhold. Each take offers something different, but what I didn’t release until the end was that Shane had a masterplan, creating a new sequence that saw the songs become increasingly splintered until the molten-vinyl finale of It Follows Me. For me, despite having worked for over a year on the original record, it was like hearing the album for the first time, and I am so happy that Shane was able to create something that took the intent of the original and filtered it through his own, highly individual vision.”

With new artwork, once again from Final Coil’s Jola Stiles, and additional mastering from Phil, “The Anchorhold Dissolution” is now available in pre-order. You can already check a first track, “C21H22N2O2”, right below.

(Picture by Jasyn Bangert – God Module) Out now via Bandcamp is Shane Aungst’s “The Zombietapes (Face The Beat 7 Megamix)”.

Seattle (United States) based DJ Shane Aungst produced this monster megamix featuring a total of 38 tracks from “Face The Beat: Session 7” during long evening sessions in February and March 2022. He soon talked about the zombietapes, hence the title of this megamix. The original compilation is available here. Expect an interview with Shane Aungst in the next days

The release holds 3 parts being just over 49 minutes each totaling just over 147 minutes and holds extensive remix and sampling work by Shane Aungst. The full remix is available for free with all donations going to charity like every release on our Bandcamp page. This is the 3rd time already that Shane Aungst has produced a remix for Side-Line’s infamous compilation series. The two previous megamixes were “Shane Aungst vs Face The Beat 5 – Megamix” and “Shane Aungst vs Face The Beat 6 – Megamix“.

Earlier this week we launched a mega mix of “Face The Beat: Session 6”, once again executed by Seattle (United States) based DJ Shane Aungst who seems to have really fallen in love with the series. The 100 minutes and 4 seconds long mix features a total of 24 tracks all taken from the massive setlist of “Face The Beat: Session 6”, lots of samples and is available now on Bandcamp as a free download.

Time to call Seattle again and talk with Shane.

SL: Shane, you have realized two very different sides in the megamix, Side A is more laid back while Side B is more up tempo. Was that split in approach already pre-planned?

SA: I didn’t have a set plan going into the project, I spent a lot of time listening to all the tracks and just went with what had the right groove for me. There were a dizzying amount of songs to choose from and I felt terrible for having to pass on so many. My selection process came down to my headphones, a few joints, and a couple late nights listening to the tracks repeatedly

SL: You put quite some work in getting samples etc added. Can you explain how you exactly started on this megamix?

SA: I spent a number of days just sampling for this project. I then ran through my process as the mixes will normally have a number of edits, but I generally messed around with all the tracks in this project in some manner. I like to tell stories or go with a theme with mixes and or edits and I was working with a loose theme of the overall sampling on this mix as well.

I really enjoyed working on this project and have loved the variety of music that comes across these Face the Beat compilations and the sheer size of this volume 6 compilation was by far the largest compilation I have been a part of, even bigger than the 1995 RAS DVA There is No Time compilation.

SL: Besides this megamix, can you bring us up to speed with what you have been busy lately? Also what is in the planning for 2021?

SA: I’m always working on a mix of some type, I currently have two I’m working on to be posted to my Mixcloud account, I try and keep a new mix posted weekly. I have a livestream show for Temple 3 at the end of the month and I have done a few remixes as well as released my first solo track, an ambient track which you can check out below.

SL: Has the current health crisis had any impact on you as a musician?

SA: We have been under some type of shelter in place order since March here in Seattle, closing bars and clubs down. Jason Bangert (God Module) and myself both dj a large monthly fetish event at Kremwerk here in Seattle and I have really been missing the live shows and getting to see and interact with the crowd

I feel like 2021 is going to be a bit of a holding pattern with this pandemic, at least in the states, I don’t really see shows happening until late 2021 at the earliest so its been hard to plan. I had a couple invites for festivals in 2020 that obviously fell through and I’m hoping to get out of Seattle to play more (last show out of Seattle I played was in Brazil back in Dec of 2019).

The past weekend we launched a mega mix of “Face The Beat: Session 5” done by Seattle (United States) based DJ Shane Aungst. The 1 hour, 33 minutes and 21 seconds long mix features a total of 23 tracks (with the proceedings equally going to charity). If you were surprised by the quality of the mega mix, then it’s no coincidence as Shane Aungst isn’t exactly a newbie to the industrial scene. Also as a DJ he is rather prolific, or what do you think of the 168 DJ sets he posted on Mixcloud!

Time we asked Shane a few questions!

SL: Shane, you’re not exactly a newbie in the industrial music scene…

S: I would say my background in music started around 1984/85ish. I was only fifteen at the time and had found my way into a number of Seattle area post punk clubs during that time. I jumped head first into it all, the clubs, the chemicals, the music, all of it.

In the early 90s I met Michael Wimer at Musicland where we worked together. Mike had been working on music on his own and asked if I could sing (which I never had), we ended up with noxious emotion and I played with noxious from 1993 to 1999. We recorded a few albums, toured a few times and got to play with a lot of amazing bands from the 90s.

After leaving the bands behind, I DJ’d a number of nights around the Seattle area from around 2001 onward. I had a couple of nights at the Seattle club Noc Noc, where I was mainly playing a lot of goth top 40 classics back in those days. I also had this weekly 80s post punk night; I did that for over a decade plus a number of guest spots around the city. However around 2014, I started working at one of the top edm clubs in Seattle for about three years. It was quite the musical education for me. I was only working as bar staff, but I had a front row seat to all the top edm acts and producers and really got to listen and watch all the top names of techno, house, trance, etc.

It was during this time that I had a lot of inspiration and knew I wanted to take some of what these people were doing and translate it in my own way to industrial.

SL: How did you get the idea to make a megamix? It’s the first time someone did that for this compilation series actually.

S: I’ve always enjoyed the Face the Beat series and with the release of the newest Face the Beat session 5, I knew I would have a lot of good material to choose from and I just decided to do it.

This is actually the fourth such mix I’ve done, the first one started with Electrosound, it originally was going to be released as a compilation but the project fell through as an official release and I ended up posting it to my mixcloud account. I also did one for the Russian Dark Community compilation as well as well as one for Ray of Genius of Nefarious. Ray had asked me to do a remix a few weeks before he passed earlier this year, we had had been talking almost daily about the remix and life in general and it hit me hard when he passed and I wanted to do one for him and of course now this one.

Shane Aungst vs Face The Beat 5 – Megamix by Shane Aungst

SL: How did you get to choose the 23 tracks that are featured in this mix?

S: This was the hardest part as there was over five hours of music to choose from and I ended up with around ninety minutes of music. I just went through all the songs one night, and put aside all the ones that had the right feel for me. I’m a big fan of harsh electronic music and tend to play a lot of aggrotech, but for this mix it was the song “Burn (Feat. C0r3 C1ty)” from Purple Fog Side that really reached out and grabbed me and I built my sampling and the mix around that song.

SL: Where do you get your loops and samples of old school material from that you use in your remix sets?

S: In the last couple years I’ve become somewhat obsessed with sampling. I’ll dig through movies, TV shows, music, interviews, documentaries, beatport (loops), almost anything I can get my hands on as well as making some of my own loops and samples.

SL: You don’t really go for the easy way when you build up sets. What’s the basic idea when you start a set?

S: My whole work process is a bit chaotic and in my head. I spend a couple nights a week just working on sampling, its normally during this time that I find something I like and tend to spin off and play with whatever sample/theme I’m using and build on it from there.

SL: Do you always put that much work in it?

S: Yes and no, it depends on the project, but all the original mixes yes, but you will also find a lot of live sets, collection mixes (collection of edits/remixes I’ve done), but yeah its a lot of work.

SL: You are also working on own material? How is that progressing?

S: A lot slower than I had hoped, I’m always frustrated at my learning curve and I’ve been juggling a lot of projects, its something I still plan on doing but I’m just not there yet.
