Genre/Influences: Electro-Pop.

Format: Digital, CD.

Background/Info: The ongoing pandemic inspired German Synth-Pop duo Sea Of Son to release a bunch of singles. Most of the songs were taken from the band’s last studio album “Unbroken” released in 2019, but there was also a single/EP featuring the new song “Turn Back Time”. This EP brings a fine selection from these Single/EP songs together featuring a total amount of seventeen tracks.

Content: Sea Of Sin stands for ‘classical’ Electro-Pop featuring well-crafted songs and carrying choruses. They selected songs like “Naked”, “Immaculate”, “Floating Away”, “Unspoken Words” and “Valentine”, which were all originally featured on the “Unbroken”-album. We here get “Single”- and “Radio”-edits plus a few alternative mixes, but also remixes by Rob Dust, Man Without Country, Nature Of Wires, Mesh, Covered In Snow, Paralyzed, Nite, Blume, Soni Code, Mindbeat, Rotoskop and Promenade Cinema.

+ + + : This EP is an opportunity to rediscover some of the “Unbroken”-songs reworked/remixes by other Electro-Pop artists. Mesh has remixed “Turn Back Time” and you’ll rapidly recognize the unique stamp of the British Masters of Electro-Pop. This is a terrific remix. I also have to mention the remix of “Floating Away” by Paralyzed and the boosted remix of “Floating Away” by Blume.

– – – : The remixes of “Unspoken Words” couldn’t really convince me. I also expected a bit more from Rob Dust’s work, which nearly always guarantees great remixes. I personally regret that all remixes have been made by Electro-Pop artists; even if they all inject their own touch it would have been cool to get remixes by bands from other music genres.

Conclusion: Electro-Pop freaks will for sure discover some cool songs/remixes at this EP.

Best songs: “Turn Back Time – Mesh Remix”, “Floating Away – Paralyzed Remix”, “Floating Away – Blume Remix”, “Immaculate – Nature Of Wires Remix”.

About Sea Of Sin

Sea Of Sin is a German synth-pop duo from Hamburg formed in the mid-1990s by Frank Zwicker (vocals, lyrics) and Klaus Schill (synths, guitars, production), who had both played in Covent Garden before. The debut album “Watch Out!” appeared on Subtronic Records in 1995, followed by the EP “Illuminate” (1997), produced by Heiko Maile of Camouflage, and the album “Urban Chemistry” (2000).

After a long hiatus the duo returned in 2018 with “Future Pulse”, built largely from re-edited earlier material, and in April 2019 issued “Unbroken”, its first album of new songs after the break. The Remixes (7US Music), reviewed on Side-Line in January 2020, collected the remix work of 2018 and 2019 and added the previously unreleased “Only The Memory Remains”. Singles for “Unspoken Words”, “Floating Away”, “Turn Back Time” and “Immaculate” followed in 2020, and the band remixed Covered In Snow’s “Romeo” in early 2021.

“The Remixes II” was released on 26 March 2021 as a download and on CD through 7Us Music, according to Bandcamp and Discogs. Its seventeen tracks gather single and radio edits of “Naked”, “Turn Back Time” and “Floating Away” (the latter featuring Andrew Montgomery), the “Hanseatic Dark Mix” of “Unspoken Words” and the “Crashed Wires Mix” of “Valentine”, plus remixes by Rob Dust, Man Without Country, Nature Of Wires, Mesh, Covered In Snow, Paralyzed, Nite, Blume, Soni Code, Mindbeat, Rotoskop and Promenade Cinema.

The album “Tired Of Chasing Ghosts” arrived on 21 April 2023, the duo marked its thirtieth anniversary with live dates in 2024, and The Shape Of A Lonely Soul was released on 13 March 2026 and reviewed on Side-Line in August 2026. “The Remixes II” is the band’s second remix collection and its second Side-Line review.

Genre/Influences: Electro-pop.

Format: Digital, CD.

Background/Info: German synth-pop
duo Sea Of Sin were mainly active during the 90s, but struck back during the
past few years, re-releasing their earlier work plus a new opus entitled
“Unbroken” in 2019. Several EP’s were released as well. This new EP is a fine
selection from the remixes that were originally released on these EP’s, but
some little extras.

Content: “The Remixes”
features 15 songs, but especially “What Are You Waiting For” has been put in
the spotlights. The “Single Edit” is a fully enjoyable electro-pop track driven
by a catchy chorus you can easily sing along. Remixes have been accomplished by
Mesh, Paralyzed, Khibou, Oren Amram, Rotoskop and Mindbeat. Another song that
has been featured is “You” that has been remixed by Blume, The New Division and
Uncreated. You also will recognize older cuts from the early period like the
unavoidable “I Live My Life” in a so-called “Neo Remix” and “Star” in an
alternative edit. There also is a “Club Edit” of “Truth” (also originally
released on the band’s debut album “Watch Out!”) and the new song “Only The
Memory Remains”, which confirms the electro-pop skills of this band.

+ + + : The main strength
of this EP is the diversity of the remixes. Sea Of Sin has chosen a very
eclectic selection of bands so you don’t get the feeling all songs are similar.
The contribution of Mesh is a nice little extra while their remix is pretty
cool, but I also have to mention the club-friendly remix by Paralyzed and the
groovy-one by Khibou. I also like the funky edit of Oren Amram. Sea Of Sin has
a nose to compose catchy, danceable songs with great choruses so I can imagine
it’s pretty inspiring to remix them. They also revealed a great new song “Only
The Memory Remains”.

– – – : Luckily, this EP is
a special fan edition because I became a bit saturated from all these remixes.

Conclusion: Sea Of Sin has made
a noticeable comeback and this new EP only confirms their potential; this is
fully enjoyable, classical electro-pop music.

Best songs: “What Are You
Waiting For – Single Edit”, “Only The Memory Remains”, “What Are You Waiting
For – Mesh Remix”, “What Are You Waiting For – Paralyzed Remix”.

Sea Of Sin is a synth-pop group formed in the mid-1990s in Germany by Klaus Schill and Frank Zwicker, both previously members of Covent Garden.
Genre/Influences: Future-pop, electro-pop.

Background/Info: Blume is an Italian trio,
which released their debut album “Rise From grey” in 2010 on the defunct A
Different Drum. They next joined hands together with WTII Records unleashing
“Autumn Ruins” in 2013. “Ashes” is their third album, which has been released
by the end of 2018.

Content: Getting back with a new
opus after a hiatus of five years is not an easy thing, but “Ashes” will
definitely appeal for all lovers of electro/future-pop music. It’s a powerful
composition mixing astral influences together with hard, danceable beats. The
vocals of Enrico Filisetti are pretty
charismatic, which creates a right balance with the power-pop sound of the
band. “Ashes” sounds as the imaginary fusion between Covenant, Syrian and
Neuroticfish.

+ + + : This ‘come-back’ truly
sounds as a real tour de force. This is great and modern future-pop music
carried by mature song writing, carrying melody lines and ultra-danceable
vibes. On top of it all you’ll discover a great vocals production. Even if this
album is ultra power-pop driven I also noticed an accomplished, emotional-like
song (cf. “Desolation Road”). But as I said I prefer the danceable side and
recommend the somewhat darker “Nightmare”. There’re some superb, naughty sound
treatments running through this song.

– – – : The only single reproach
I can imagine is the somewhat repetitive sound- and song formula.

Conclusion: I remember the more
hesitant debut album from Blume. It was not that bad, but “Ashes” clearly
sounds as their most accomplished work to date. This is great and refreshing
future-pop music!

Best songs: “Nightmare”, “Scarlet”,
“Iron Age”, “Desolation Road”.

Genre/Influences: Electro-pop, future-pop.

Background/Info: Set up in 2008 by Enrico Filisetti (vocals & lyrics, composition), Ivan Savino (composition, electronics) and Daniele De Fabritiis (guitar), the Italian trio Blume released their debut work “Rise From Grey” (2010) on the now gone A Different Drum. Three years later they joined hands together with WTII Records to unleash “Autumn Ruins”. “Ashes” is their third full length, which appears 5 years after the previous work.

Content: Blume moves on with their electro-pop driven sound, which often serves as cornerstone for a more open-minded sound mixed with future-pop and/or body-pop influences. The songs are well-crafted and might sometimes remind you of an imaginary fusion between Covenant and Assemblage 23.

+ + + : I was literally blown away by the impressive and powerful sound production. It clearly reflects a mature and professional formation taking care of any little detail in the sound. The songs are well-crafted and especially the most powerful cuts are pure lust for the ears. The opening songs are mind-blowing!

– – – : After an astonishing debut part the songs are progressively stagnating. They’re still cool and well-crafted, but maybe a little less too similar.

Conclusion: Blume clearly hasn’t the pretension to take the listeners by surprise. They just deal with a great electro-pop sound carried by a genius sound production. If you like the opening song from the album you are going to like the others as well.

Best songs: “Scarlet”, “Blackening”, “Iron Age”, “Spleen”.

Rate: (7½).
