As we reported before, The Jesus and Mary Chain signed to the London-based independent label Fuzz Club Records by revealing upcoming reissues of the band’s 2017 studio album “Damage and Joy” complete with three new bonus tracks as well as their “Live at Barrowland” LP. 

“Munki” is the sixth studio album released by the Scottish band The Jesus and Mary Chain. After leaving Blanco y Negro, the Reid brothers signed to Sub Pop in the U.S. and Creation, who had released their debut single “Upside Down” in 1984, in the UK.

The origin of the album title, according to Ben Lurie in an interview with Spin magazine, was that they “wanted an un-Mary Chain-like title…It doesn’t mean anything. It’s just a word. Misspelled on purpose.” In an interview with The Herald, Jim said that their sister Linda suggested it.

The album features an appearance from Hope Sandoval of Mazzy Star, who had previously duetted with the band on the single “Sometimes Always”, and includes the singles “I Hate Rock ‘n’ Roll” (released in 1995), “Cracking Up” and “I Love Rock ‘n’ Roll”.

Originally released June 2nd 1998 on Sub Pop / Creation Records, “Munki” was – up until the Mary Chain’s reformation in 2007 – an experimental rock’n’roll masterclass turned swan song for the Reid brothers, whose fractious in-fighting culminated in the band’s break-up less than a year after its release.

Fuzz Club are marking the new partnership by revealing upcoming reissues of the band’s 2017 studio album “Damage and Joy” complete with three new bonus tracks as well as their “Live at Barrowland” LP. On top of the reissues Fuzz Club will encompass reissues of their earlier works, new live releases and brand new studio material.

Originally released in 2017 on the band’s own label Artificial Plastic, “Damage And Joy” was The Jesus and Mary Chain’s first studio album in nearly two decades. Co-produced by Youth (Killing Joke) it also featured guest appearances from Scottish singer-songwriter Isobel Campbell and American alt-pop star Sky Ferreira. For the reissue the material was remastered by Pete Maher (U2, The Rolling Stones, Jack White, Liam Gallagher) and it now also includes “Ono Yoko” (originally only available on the Japanese CD version of the album), as well as alternative versions of “The Two Of Us” featuring Sky Ferreira and “Black And Blues” featuring Isobel Campbell.

The Jesus and Mary Chain have started recording an album just before COVID hit and returned back in the studio in October 2021 for the first time in two years.

When ego-tripping musicians want to start an online catfight there is always something funny going on. Take Liam Gallagher (ex-Oasis) for instance. Gallagher tweeted this uncalled for message (2 minutes before Christmas midnight – you’d think stars have other things to do that late at night): “Miserable Xmas to morrisey as you were LG x”.

Note that Gallagher misspelled Morrissey (it has 2 s’s), which of course got him a reply by actor David Morrissey saying “It’s MORRISSEY mate! And thanks very much!”

Gallagher – still drunk as it seems – proceeded to quote several Smiths lyrics.
