Background/Info: German solo-project Filth Pig (named after a Ministry album) is back on track unleashing a second self-released opus. The roots of this band are clearly metal-like, but “Mental Dead Ends” is an album composed with only electronics.

Content: If the album is entirely electro-like I really swear that I heard furious guitar playing matching with the speed tempo of the work. Samplings and different sound manipulations can also create this guitar impression and I must say it remains one of the band’s main ingredients. But there also is a move towards new sonic horizons like punk and even a cinematographic experiment. The vocals remain harsh and zombie-like, which is another legacy from metal music.

+ + + : “Mental Dead Ends” sounds more personal in sound and that’s a rather positive evolution after the very Ministry-like debut work. The punk touch is quite unexpected, but an interesting element to move on with. The electronic parts create a ghost-like impression and that’s another interesting evolution to move on with. The best electronic sounds have been featured on the final cut and that’s definitely the path Filth Pig has to walk on.

– – – : In a way you can hear Filth Pig is not an experienced electronic artist. The songs became quite predictable after a while featuring similar electronic sounds and treatments.

Conclusion: Filth Pig unleashes a more personal work although it’s less convincing than the debut work. But I think this is the right path to move on with.

Best songs: “Fall Into Alexithymic Opiates”, “Dissolved In Ethanol”.

Background/Info: Filth Pig is a German solo-project dealing with industrial-metal. The name of the band sounds clearly taken from the famous Ministry-album (1995). “Youthful Nihilism” is the debut album of Filth Pig.

Content: The music is driven by the cadence of speed train joined by aggressive guitar riffs. The electronic sequences are more in the background although adding an industrial touch to the work. The vocal parts are sung in a possessed and enraged way, but sound more into metal music. You’ll also notice numerous samplings running through the songs.

The influence of Ministry is clearly running throughout “Youthful Nihilism”, but it’s more metal-orientated.

+ + + : “Youthful Nihilism” is what I should call a good-old crossover work featuring solid guitar parts and  merciless rhythms. It will appeal for metal-music addicts and fans of Ministry and co will probably get some pleasure listening to Filth Pig (cool and dirty band name by the way). If you like hard metal-minded guitar play carried by speed rhythms this album is something for you.

– – – : Despite of a possible link with Ministry, Filth Pig still has a lot of stages to improve. The production is linear and predictable and has to be globally improved. Time and growing experience both are the best allies to get more consistency.

Conclusion: “Youthful Nihilism” is a debut work featuring good-old crossover ideas, but that still has to gain in maturity and production skills.

Best songs: “Transferences Of Death Drive, Bloodlust And Deprivation”, “Of An Anencephalic Accident In 1999”.

Out in a few weeks are brand new reissues of the following Ministry albums in limited edition digipaks: “Sphinctour”, “Houses of the Molé” and “Animositisomina”. You can order these very limited releases right here.

Here’s a reminder what these albums are all about. “Sphinctour” is a live CD released in 2002 by the industrial act. It contains various tracks recorded on their 1996 world tour in support of the 7th album “Filth Pig”.

“Animositisomina” was the band’s 8th studio album and originally released in 2003. It is notable for being the last album with Paul Barker, as well as being the last by Ministry album to play in their traditional industrial metal style before switching to a more thrash-oriented style with their next album, “Houses of the Molé”.

“Houses of the Molé” was the band’s 9th studio album, originally released in 2004. The album is the first part of the band’s anti-Bush trilogy, followed by “Rio Grande Blood” (2006) and “The Last Sucker” (2007). It was released in the run up to the 2004 American presidential elections, with George W. Bush being president at the time of its release.
