Out now is the debut album from the French neo-industrial rock project Divine Shade, “Fragments – Vol. 1”. The 9-track album was first teased in December 2024 with the single “Hate and Oblivion”. Thematically the album explores themes centered on resilience so frontman Ren Toner says.

The album features collaborations with artists such as Chris Vrenna (ex-Nine Inch Nails, Marilyn Manson, Tweaker), Chris Payne (ex-Tubeway Army, co-writer of Visage’s single “Fade to Grey”), Steve Fox-Harris (guitarist for Gary Numan, Archive) and more.

The band has already had quite of a journey in its rather young existence. They were for instance selected Gary Numan to open his 2022 UK tour and collaborated with Chris Vrenna (Nine Inch Nails) as you could read in the intro.

Bootblacks and Divine Shade are co-headlining a UK tour, starting tomorrow in Edinburgh at Bannermans.

Bootblacks is a Brookyn, New York-based post-punk band formed in 2010 and with a line-up that consists of Panther Almqvist (vocals), Barrett Hiatt (synth) and Kalle Fagerberg (guitar). Although drawing inspiration from the post-punk and darkwave movements of the 1980s, the trio also incorporate contemporary electronic elements into their sound. Bootblacks have released several albums that include “Veins” (2016), “Fragments” (2018) and “Thin Skies” (2020), and have also toured extensively throughout North America and Europe. They are currently putting the finishing touches to a new album entitled “Paradise” that will be issued soon.

A French trio formed by Ren Toner in 2014, Divine Shade is a combination of styles and influences inspired by cold wave culture, along with a touch of industrial rock and electronic music. Releasing several singles and EPs that have included remixes by Chris Vrenna (ex-Nine Inch Nails), the group have toured Europe extensively and were the opening act on Gary Numan’s 2022 UK tour.

Following a year marked by a major UK tour supporting Gary Numan, the French dark electronic band Divine Shade is seeking to maintain their momentum by launching a crowdfunding campaign for their EP trilogy, “Fragments”.

The band explains it as follows: “2022 was a great new start for Divine Shade. Traveling in Europe and back from a major UK tour supporting Gary Numan we would like to continue to ride on these good vibes and we want to keep giving our best for you. Here is our new conceptual project : A trilogy of EPs called : “Fragments”. 3 Eps with original songs with surprises, guests and friends. We need you to help us finance the project. Each EP will feature : 4 songs – 4 remixes – 1 music video. To thank you for your participation there are goodies ! Thank you everyone !”

The project: The “Fragments” trilogy, consisting of three EPs (Volume 1, 2, and 3), will feature original songs, surprise guests, and collaborations. Each EP will include four songs, four remixes, and an accompanying music video.

Ren Toner, songwriter of the French cold wave band Divine Shade, has used this pandemic to work on a solo electronic music project. Out now is a video featuring a live session of the track “This Love is a Weakness”. Also present on this song and the video is singer Shan Moue.

This is the first track to introduce the project, it was mastered by Antoine Chabert who also mastered Daft Punk in the past. An EP, “Welcome The Chaos”, is planned for winter on Young And Cold Records.
