The Brussels-based Spleen+ label (a division of Alfa Matrix) has prepared a deluxe 7CD collector’s edition – “Resurgence” – which brings together 133 active bands from across the globe, spanning the diverse sub-genres born from post-punk’s iconic roots. You can order it now from the Alfa Matrix webstore and in digital download format from Bandcamp.

The release comes housed in a luxurious vinyl-sized box, and comes accompanied by a 28-page book. The book holds interviews from renowned producers like John Fryer and Jean-Marc Lederman, label managers, journalists, and iconic artists (including Red Lorry Yellow Lorry, William Faith, No More, Skeletal Family, Mona Mur, KaS Product, And Also The Trees, Clan Of Xymox, Attrition, Das Ich, Merciful Nuns, The Names, The Breath Of Life, etc).

Background/Info: One year after the last album (cf. “R.O.T.T. (inmyskin)”  Lynette Cerezo strikes back with a new opus of her Bestial Mouths sonic project. This work features seventeen remixes.

Content: Because of the remixes this album is diversified and brings multiple influences together. It sounds definitely Electronic but still evasive, Dark-Pop driven and with an extra, Industrial and bombastic touch on top. Some parts are even evolving towards a transcendental journey. Sometimes danceable and later on dreamy the album is filled with surprises. Remixes have been accomplished by Broken English Club, Actors, Rebeka Warrior, Curses, XTR Human, Modern Men, IV Horsemen, Crune, Carrelle, Daniel Myer, Trace Amount, Gencab, Maduro, Orphx, Snowbeats, Lana Del rabies and Bedless Bones. 

+ + + : I always have reservations about albums filled with remixes. This work however comes as a cool addendum to the last year released album “R.O.T.T. (inmyskin). I like the mysticism running through the excellent opening piece “Vast Murmur” remixed by Broken English Club, the uplifting effect emerging from “Slitskin” remixed by XTR Human and the remix of “Hex” by Snowbeasts. Diversity is the main strength of this work.

– – – : Seventeen remixes is quite a lot when there are a few uninspired pieces included. I expected a bit more from Daniel Myer and Bedless Bones to mention a few.

Conclusion: Not bad at all but I prefer the original work of Bestial Mouths instead of remixes by other artists.

The release is the follow-up (or rather companion) to their latest LP, “R.O.T.T.(inmyskin)” and offers reworks mixing darkwave-industrial with synthpop elements. The remixes were executed by Broken English Club, Actors, Rebeka Warrior, Curses, XTR Human, Modern Men, Lana Del Rabies, IV Horsemen, Crune, Orphx, GenCAB, Trace Amount, Carrellee, Daniel Myer, Maduro, Snowbeasts and Bedless Bones.

Fronted by Lynette Cerezo the band formed in 2009 and has mixed a number of elements in their work, from goth, industrial, post-punk, New Wave, noise, metal, to other underground sounds using live acoustic and electronic drums and analog synthesizers.

In their decade-plus existence, the band has worked with myriad of producers and artists including Zola Jesus, Mick Harvey, Rhys Fulber, Egyptrixx, Boy Harsher, Die Krupps, Mater Suspiria Vision, Zanias, The Horrorist, and Ludovico Technique to name but a few.

Background/Info: The new album from the American formation Bestial Mouths is still driven by core member Lynette Cerezo who got assisted by Brant Showers and Matthew Tucker. Several productions have been released since 2009 but this is the first opus released by Negative Gain Productions.

Content: If you’re a bit familiar with the sound of Bestial Mouths you’ll directly recognize the charismatic and bewitching vocal parts by Lynette Cerezo. She has a particular, expressive, timbre of voice which is often reminding me of Gothic singers. The particularity of Bestial Mouths remains the mix of the vocals together with an explicit Electronic composition. The music sounds like a Dark-Pop exposure featuring piano-sound arrangements and bombastic elements.

+ + + : Bestial Mouths would be a different band without Lynette Cerezo who remains a true charismatic performer. She injects the spirit to the music. I also like the delicious contrast between her voice and the Electronic music. Another contrast comes back in the arrangements which can be now refined and then heavy, bombastic. The album is supported with a haunting atmosphere getting its highlight with the great “Slitskin”-song.

– – – : I regret the work only features 9 songs.

Conclusion: This album brings no true innovation nor surprises but is another noticeable work from a band which according to me deserves a wider recognition.

Best songs: “Slitskin”, “Only Dead Fish”, “The Knife”, “Vast Murmur”.

The Sacramento, California-based act Bestial Mouths release their new album “R.O.T.T. (inmyskin)” today via Negative Gain Productions. The whole was produced by Juno Award Winning producer Rhys Fulber (Front Line Assembly, Delerium) and is the band’s sixth studio album following the 2020 release of “Resurrectedinblack”.

While Bestial Mouths has seen a few line-up changes in their nearly decade long existence, Lynette Cerezo has remained consistently at the helm of the project. The “Inshroudss” EP from 2019 was the first Bestial Mouths release to be entirely written and conceived by Cerezo.

The band is today also sharing a new video for the title track “R.O.T.T.” (Road Of Thousand Tears). Of the video Cerezo says: “Singing in both English and en español, I took inspiration for ‘Road Of Thousand Tears’ from my ancestry and the suffering path of the Trail of Tears. The creation of the song that would become the album’s title went a surrealist route, because life is surreal. Is it even real? This is my journey, all of the steps I’ve taken with Bestial Mouths. It is a path that has taken me down a Carrollian rabbit hole, past lives recycled through a meat grinder. Connections are broken, strands of reality disconnected from their whole. Elements of the past bleeding into the Now, stripped of context to create only raw wounds in existence—like half-remembered fragments of melody, once pulsing with life and now devoid of meaning.”

The dark wave / post-punk duo Vaselyne are back with a brand new album op COP International, the 3-track EP “Under Your Skin”. The EP is available now in pre-order and ready for release on the 5th of May 2023 (Bandcamp Day), tomorrow that is.

The EP holds the title track “Under Your Skin” followed by a cover of David Sylvian’s “Riverman” and an instrumental version of “Under Your Skin”. Note that the “Riverman” cover was created for the Japan cover compilation “Still Life in Polaroids” which we covered earlier this week. That compilation is curated by Yvette Winkler and Coitus Interruptus Production.

“We are both very much influenced by Japan. Their ability to mix musical genres, and their impact on the future of new wave, was very important. Especially considering the fact, they were all self taught. It’s an honour to be able to play their songs, but also a scary thing. As you feel you are touching the Crown Jewels 🙂 You want to do them and their music justice.”

This new EP follows the release of their full length “The Sea Says”. Vaselyne has now finished recording their upcoming album. The first single of that album is a ballad “Waiting to Exhale”. The video for this track was made by Dutch filmmaker Dorothee Meddens. The new album includes collaborations with Lynette Cerezo from Bestial Mouths, Searmanas, John Fryer ( Black Needle Noise, NIN, Prayers, This Mortal Coil and HIM) and Michael Aliani from Chiron/Ikon.

Vaselyne is a collaboration between Dutch singer Yvette Winkler and Dutch musician and producer Frank Weyzig. Yvette Winkler was co-founder of the Dutch band “Sea of Souls” (2006) and Frank Weyzig is a Dutch producer, composer and band member, known for his contribution to the original line-up for Clan of Xymox and his work for indie new wave band Born For Bliss. Vaselyne has so far released four albums on the German label Echozone: “Earthbound” EP (2012), their full length debut album “The Fire Within” (2013), “In Dreams” EP (2015) and “Fragile” EP (2016).

In the spring of 2018, after a two year hiatus, the band picked up things where they left and Vaselyne contributed to the new Textbeak (Michael Szewczyk) album, “Sick for Songs a Season Eats”, produced by John Fryer. For this album, Yvette wrote and sung the lyrics for “Legion_err” and both Frank and Yvette have written and sung the lyrics for “Information Medicine” a track with Mark Stewart of “The Pop Group”. Yvette also collaborated with IAMTHESHADOW, John Fryer’s Black Needle Noise, Jean- Marc Lederman, Attrition and Junksista. Frank worked with Kelly Cook (ex- Moev) on their new project “Tearing The BlackBox”.

Negative Gain Productions has partnered with Gothic Cruise to celebrate their 25th anniversary with the “Destination: New Orleans” event. The festival will take place on August 25 – 26. The post-punk / dark electronic music festival Absolution has announced it’s full line up and dates.

Absolution will be taking place October 6th-8th in Tampa (Ybor City), FL. In it’s third year, the festival is once again featuring acts within the post-punk, industrial, darkwave, and synthpop genres.

Headlining Absolution this year will be UK artists The KVB, French EBM act Minuit Machine, and post-punk Californians Creux Lies. The festival also features special performances from Italian darkwave/post-punk artists Hapax, and UK synthpop group Empathy Test. Additional artists playing include The Foreign Resort, Traitrs, Bestial Mouths, The French Police, SYZYGYX, XTR Human, Corlyx, Glass Spells, Hexheart, The Purge, Die Robot, Violent Vickie, and Element 104.

Dutch darkwave duo Vaselyne has just unveiled their new digital maxi-single for the track, “Waiting To Exhale”, a ballad. “Waiting To Exhale” – which is available here on Bandcamp – tells a story of breaking free from whatever is holding you back. Moving on, transforming into someone or something new. Whether that’s a unhealthy relationship, not being able to be your true self, the listener is invited to decide what that means to them.

The video sees Yvette Winkler walking through forests and dunes, a heavy cape trailing behind her. Winkler comments: “Carrying the weight on my shoulders whilst I walk towards the sea. Morphing into a butterfly. But do I transform or disappear?”

About Vaselyne

Vaselyne consists of singer Yvette Winkler and musician Frank Weyzig who formed the band in the spring of 2011. While Yvette Winkler was co-founder of the Dutch band Sea of Souls (2006) and her contribution to Pieter Nooten’s latest album, “Here is Why” (2010), you might also know here from the Black Needle Noise track “Gone” on which she sung.

We don’t really have to introduce Frank Weyzig we would think. He started his music career with Dutch electronic wave legend Clan of Xymox from way back at the time they were signed with the infamous English 4AD label in the mid-eighties.

Adult has launched a remix of the Bestial Mouths song “Unshivered”. A video was equally made and can be seen below. The song is included in Bestial Mouths’ remix album “Thousandneedles” that features collaborations with SRSQ, Ash Code, Void Vision, Light Asylum, and more and which dropped earlier this month.

“Thousandneedles” will be available on vinyl and cassette versions this August via Fill-Lex Records and Soil Records.

In a reaction Adult says: “We got this remix request in the summer from Bestial Mouths and it was just the thing we needed to get us back in the studio again. It wasn’t like looking at a blank canvas and it felt more like collaboration in a way, which was much needed during such an isolating time.”

The track’s visual counterpart offers a psychological portrait of a person clawing their way to meaning. Director Jamie Parkhurst, who has previously worked with Los Angeles post-punk outfit, Death Bells, and experimental electronic artist Trevor powers, was helped by producer Yelena Akopian, stylists and designers Bradley Soileau and Elliott Evan, photographer Renee Parkhurst, DP Connor Ellman, and camera operator Alex Van Putten. The video was edited by editing is by Alex Nicolaou (Drab Majesty).

About Bestial Mouths

From their inception in 2009, the core root of Bestial Mouths has combined Lynette Cerezo’s voice with several genre influences across the spectrum of goth, industrial, post-punk, new wave, noise, metal, and other underground sounds using live acoustic and electronic drums and analog synthesizers. Since 2018, Bestial Mouths has been the sole project of Cerezo.

2019’s “Inshroudss” EP was the first Bestial Mouths release entirely written and conceived by Cerezo. The EP was released on the independent label RuneE & Ruin, which Cerezo formed together with friend and frequent collaborator Alison Lewis (Linea Aspera / Zanias / Fleisch Records).

In their decade-plus existence, Bestial Mouths have worked with a long list of producers and artists. Zola Jesus, Mick Harvey, Egyptrixx, Boy Harsher, Die Krupps, Mater Suspiria Vision, Zanias, The Horrorist, and Ludovico Technique are just a few collaborators, while they’ve shared the stage with the likes of Psychic TV, Austra, Chelsea Wolfe, DAF, 3 Teeth, OAKE, Front Line Assembly, White Ring, Suicide Commando, David J, King Dude, Youth Code, Cut Hands and Light Asylum.

(Photo by Sandy Holmes) Bestial Mouths has a new video to be released for their single “Dry as Dust” taken of their album “Resurrectedinblack” that was released earlier this year and which comes out on vinyl on October 31, via Rune & Ruin Records.

The video for “Dry as Dust” comes just in time for Halloween and lay bare a barren post-apocalyptic universe dreamt up by director Vicente Cordero in which we have come to reside.

Director Vicente Cordero : “What I will say is that it was an honor to work with such an expressionistic artist and I am humbled and flattered to combine visions and create this abstract video, rarely do I get the opportunity to be solely abstract and I feel the video captures the song beautifully.”

Genre/Influences: Industrial, experimental, electronic.

Background/Info: Behind Textbeak is hiding Michael Szewczyck, which is a kind of US veteran in electronic/industrial music. He’s active since the 80s and never stopped composing music, DJ-ing, touring. Under the Textbeak moniker he unleashes this new opus featuring 11 songs and on, which he got the contribution of numerous artists such as Mark Stewart, Searmanas, Bestial Mouths, Peter Hope, Janine Rainforth, Cyanotic, Vaselyne ao while John Fryer has been asked to produce the album.

Content: All the songs have been sung by guest artist while others sometimes contributed to the writing. It quite naturally resulted in an open-minded work, which is covering varied influences. You now discover an EBM-driven song while others are more into industrial and bombast. But there are also some vintage electro passages, which might remind you of Suicide and slower driven pieces evoking the cold sensuality of Portishead.

+ + + : Diversity is the main characteristic of the album, which more sounds as a compilation instead of a real artist-album. The different singers each inject their very own timbre of voice, which is mixed with different kinds of music. My favorite track is maybe the most atypical one because of it’s Portishead touch (cf. “Vacuum Decay” feat. Searmanas. The more industrial-ritual driven “Blood Storm” feat. Bestial Mouths is another attention grabber. The common element between both songs is the female singer, which maybe reveals that Textbeak sounds at its best with female singers.

– – – : All the songs aren’t always that easily accessible, but that’s maybe also because of the ‘compilation’-feeling. But my main regret is that there are less attention grabbers featured.

Conclusion: This debut album as Textbeak reveals an interesting –although not innovative concept, featuring multiple cool guest singers.

Best songs: Vacuum Decay feat. Searmanas”, “Blood Storm feat. Bestial Mouths”, “Forever Now feat. Mark Stewart”.

Genre/Influences: Gothic, electronic.

Background/Info: Bestial Mouths is a formation driven by the charismatic female singer Lynette Cerezo assisted by Christopher Myrick and Gustavo Aldena. The band previously released two albums plus one live opus and one remix album on vinyl format. The band joined hands with Cleopatra Records and unleashed the “Heartless”-album at the end of last year.

Content: The main characteristic of Bestial Mouths is the bewitching timbre of voice of Lynette Cerezo reminds me of Siouxsie Sioux. It injects a gothic flavor on top of the work, which is entire electro-like. The songs have been accomplished with dark and tortured sound atmospheres, where the voice sometimes becomes a bit ritual-like.

Sound-wise this work is driven by bombastic drum sections sometimes joined by epic arrangements. The electro style is now and then a bit retro-like. One of the most surprising cuts is without a shadow of a doubt the cover version of The Human League’s, “Being Boiled”, which was transformed into a totally new and obscure format.

+ + + : “Heartless” is an original opus for the mix of typically gothic-like female vocals and cold electronics. The songs are carried by heavy, bombastic drums injecting a very own style to the work. The songs are supported by overwhelming atmospheres, but other cuts are into pure vintage-like electronics. There are several cool cuts featured, but I have a preference for the somewhat ritual-orientated “Ceased” revealing a great balance between vocals and music. I like the icy synth lines and the global approach of this band.

– – – : “Heartless” is maybe missing what I would call a real hit although there are numerous noticeable songs. I’m not that fond of their Human League cover. It’s a creative transformation of the original song, but definitely not the best cut on this album.

Conclusion: “Heartless” is a successful album, which sounds like the offspring between a gothic-like singer and obscure electronic music. Both ingredients have been cemented with bombastic arrangements.

Best songs: “Ceased”, “Earth”, “Heartless”, “White Eyes”, “Small Prey”.
