Genre/Influences: Gothic, dark-wave.

Background/Info: Violet Tears is a band hailing from Bari (Italy), which saw the light of day in 1998. After a debut album released on The Fossil Dungeon and two other full lengths released on Ark records, they now joined hands together with Dark Vinyl.

Content: “Metamorfosi” can be easily described as a gothic work with an explicit melancholic taste. It’s first of all a guitar driven band, which easily reminds me of the 80s spirit. Some songs have been accomplished by electronic arrangements. The debut songs have been sung by their female singer while the last part sees the male singer taking over. Most of the tracks have been sung in English, but you also will notice Italian sung pieces.

+ + + : One of the album’s main strengths is without a shadow of a doubt the bewitching effect of singer Carmen De Rosas. Her timbre of voice sounds in perfect harmony with the melancholic guitar play and the rather depressed spirit recovering this work. The guitar play brings us back to retro productions.

– – – : The songs are pretty similar and there’s no real high light among the tracklist.

Conclusion: “Metamorfosi” is an easy listening and enjoyable work, but it doesn’t set the world of gothic music alight.
