(Photo by Credit Mandi Martini) Out now on the fine Oklahoma City-based label, Re:Mission Entertainment, is the brand new album from Snowbeasts, “Devour”. The release comes hand in hand with a video for the title track, directed by Luke Haughwout.

The post-industrial duo Snowbeasts consists of Robert Galbraith (Raab Codec), Elizabeth Virosa (Elizabeth Galbraith). They are known for their heavy beat-oriented compositions and eerie synthetic atmospheres blending cinematic ambience with powerful modular squelches and heavily distorted beats.

Devour by Snowbeasts

Formed in 2014, initially as an experimental modular synth side project by Robert Galbraith, Elizabeth Virosa later joined, adding ethereal vocals and expanding the project’s scope. The duo has been prolific, with over 20 releases including collaborations with artists like Dead Voices on Air, Solypsis, D.U.M.E., and Theologian.

Here’s the video for the title track.

The fine Oklahoma City-based label, Re:Mission Entertainment, has just released the brand new album by the Providence-based post-industrial duo Snowbeasts, titled “The Endless”. The latest offering contains 10 tracks, with the band continuing to develop their sound based on the foundations of their previous heavy beat-oriented releases.

Snowbeasts comprises Robert Galbraith and vocalist Elizabeth Virosa, and since the band’s formation in 2014, they have been exceptionally prolific. To date, they have more than 20 releases, including collaborations with Dead Voices on Air, Solypsis, D.U.M.E., and Theologian.

Do take a moment to explore the full album below.

The Endless by Snowbeasts

We are also pleased to present the video for “Let’s Be Animals” below. The lyrics express a desire to sever ties with humanity in order to escape war and other self-destructive behaviours that are not typically associated with “beasts”. The video was filmed on a chilly day in Hockomock Swamp, which is an Algonquin term meaning “place where spirits dwell”. This location is also considered part of the Bridgewater Triangle, an area south of Boston known for its paranormal activity and folklore. Some of the footage of wolves shown behind Snowbeasts was captured by Mandi Martini at the Rocky Mountain Arsenal National Wildlife Refuge.

Genre/Influences: Dark-electro.

Background/Info: Matt Slagle is an American artist who has been involved with numerous- and very different music projects. I personally remember Theologian, Side3 and Navicon Torture Technologies, but he has also been active in Negativehate, Diathoron, Sullen Rail, Thevetat and Dracaris. M Slagle was mainly active in between 2000 and 2011 and is now back on track unleashing a new album.

Content: It’s not an easy thing to
define the sound of M Slagle, but there are explicit dark-electronic influences
running through the production. It’s a raw and unpolished production, which
seems to have found its main inspiration in the 90s electro scene. The
complexity reminds me a bit of Mentallo & The Fixer. The harsh vocals
create a perfect match with the music. One of the most surprising cuts is the
cover version of Marianne Faithfull’s “Love Hates”, which also appears to be
one of the most accessible cuts.

+ + + : I like the darkness
hanging over this production, which is mainly characterized by a hostile
atmosphere. Sound-wise M Slagle clearly avoids all kinds of cheap clichés, but
tries to create a personal sound. It’s more the kind of album you’re going like
for its dark mood instead of hard-danceable hard-electronic music. The cover
version of Marianne Faithfull is quite successful, but I also have to mention
“Moving Without”, the instrumental “Drained” and “Everything Else”.

– – – : It all sounds like the
raw and unpolished production was intentional and in a way reinforce the
retro-feeling of the work, but I think the mix could have been a little bit
more professional.

Conclusion: M Slagle is a discovery
for me. I can’t remember to have heard this project before, but I’m sure I now
will keep it in mind.

Best songs: “Moving Without”,

Background/Info: Lee Bartow (Leech) remains a prolific artist. This vinyl was originally released as a CDR in 2014 by Annihilvs (the own label of Theologian) and got re-released a few months ago by Nothing Under The Sun (subdivision of Redscroll Records).

Content: I was a bit disappointed by the last full length of Theologian (cf. “Pain Of The Saints”), which sounded a bit chaotic and less coherent in the different influences. I definitely prefer this 12”, which is more driven by a strong basis of industrial and ambient influences.

The listener rapidly feels like embarking on a heavy trip through industrial turmoil and obscure ambient sound waves. This is a misty universe where vocals have been tortured into loud screams of terror. Hard drones inject an oppressive feeling, which instantly takes you by the throat. Leech conceived meticulous, chilling loops getting the listener into a freaky sonic tunnel. There’s no real exit from this imaginary place called ‘horror’. You feel like you are imprisoned by a tension, which becomes higher when icy, scratching sounds and other sharp, metallic noises are joining in.

↑↑↑: This EP features 4 poignant tracks of pure terror and industrial-ambient splendor.

↓↓↓ : My single regret is that it is a vinyl release. This is the kind of stuff composed by Theologian that I would have liked to have heard an entire full length album of.

Conclusion: Theologian switches from average releases to real genius productions. “A Means By Which To Break The Surface Of The Real” definitely belongs to the supreme category of dark music.

Best songs: “The Sun Failed To Rise Today”, “Truthseeker’s Pick”.

Rate: (DP:8)DP.
