Italian futurepop / synthpop band Stars Crusaders back with their 3rd album ‘M.A.T.E.R.’

The Italian futurepop / synthpop band Stars Crusaders is back with a 3rd album, “M.A.T.E.R.”, via SkyQode Records, 5 years after their last studio full length “Welcome To Hydra”. According to the band, “M.A.T.E.R.” is “the final chapter in the trilogy of impostors which started with ‘New Horizons’ in 2014 and continued on ‘Welcome To Hydra’ in 2017.”

As far as the concept, all the tracks on the new album are devoted, in some way or another, to the Great Mother, an ancient goddess with many different names, representing the eternal circle of birth, death and rebirth.

Music-wise, “M.A.T.E.R.” offers you quite a solid mix of futurepop / EBM bangers and synthpop ballads. The album also features two prominent collaborations, one with Swedish EBM act Cryo and the other with Resonanz Kreis, a dark electronic project from Italy. A limited CD version of the album is available as well and comes in a 6-panel digipak with lyrics and can be ordered on Bandcamp.

Stars Crusaders consists of Yeda Furyan (vocals), DaveDax (synths / groove master), Symorg (synths / backing vocals) and C1-C0 (drums).

Stars Crusaders & Cryo unite for ‘The Rising Phoenix’ single, out now on SkyQode

Stars Crusaders is a four-piece electronic band from Italy and was founded in 2013. The music of Stars Crusaders combines elements of synthpop, futurepop and EBM with a futuristic and mystical atmosphere.

Out now via the fine SkyQode label (on Bandcamp and on all other digital services) is “The Rising Phoenix”, a very surprising 2-track single collaboration between the Italian futurepop act Stars Crusaders and the Swedish EBM act Cryo.

“The Rising Phoenix” is taken off Stars Crusaders’ upcoming third album “M.A.T.E.R.”, due in early 2022 on SkyQode. In addition to the title track, the single features a remix of the track by the Italian synthpop band Forces Of Light.

Out now is “Shadows”, a brand new single by the Russian futurepop duo Last Activity. This is the band’s first release after the reissue of their self-titled debut album on SkyQode in December 2020.

“Shadows” is the first single taken from Last Activity’s future album which is currently in production. This track perfectly demonstrates the band’s trademark futurepop sound with melodiс synth lines, hard dance elements, and deep trance pads. In addition to the title track and its instrumental version, the single features remixes by synthwave project Sync_Lost and futurepop / EBM band Stars Crusaders.

Last Activity was started by Gleb Rogozinsky (music, vocals) and Konstantin Banzin (vocals) in 2009. Fans of Apoptygma Berzerk, Neuroticfish, Colony 5 and the like will surely dig this.

Stars Crusaders joins SkyQode family of artists – new single and videoclip in the making

Stars Crusaders, a four-piece electronic band from Turin, Italy, has joined the SkyQode family of artists. Founded in 2013, the band currently consists of Yeda Furyan (vocals), Davedax (synths), Symorg (synths / backing vocals), and C1-C0 (drums). Here’s what their music sounds like: a combination of elements of synthpop, futurepop and EBM blended with futuristic sci-fi atmospheres.

In 2014, Stars Crusaders got signed to the renowned American label WTII Records, where they released several EPs and two albums, “New Horizons” (2014) and “Welcome To Hydra” (2017). Currently, the new label is preparing the release of a new single taken off the band’s upcoming third album planned for early 2020.

The “Army of Impostors” single will be out on 8 November 2019 as well as a videoclip.

Background/Info: Italian electro-pop formation Stars Crusaders last year released the successful album “Welcome To Hydra”. “Gemini” is the second EP taken from this album.

Content: “Gemini” remains a great song in the familiar style of this band. It’s danceable electro-pop music carried by a solid kick, great vocals and a perfect chorus.

The title song has been remixed by Decoded Feedback, Vanguard and the to me unknown Desorden Perfecto. Last, but not least we also get another remix, but this time from the song “The Runner”, which originally appeared on the band’s debut album “New Horizons” and which has been remixed by another less familiar name (cf. Hydrian).

+ + + : “Gemini” was not my absolute favorite song from the album although a right choice as EP-title track. It’s a well-crafted and efficient, powerful electro-pop cut. The charismatic vocals perfectly fit this cool cut. There also is an interesting selection of remixes and I especially like the idea this song has been remixed by Decoded Feedback. It’s not my favorite remix, but I especially like because it’s a band dealing with a harder- and darker music style. I personally prefer the remix of Vanguard. It’s also interesting to see rather unknown bands remixing Stars Crusaders.

– – – : “Gemini” is the kind of EP that will mainly appeal to the die-hard fans of the band and also for some DJ’s. But if you want to discover Stars Crusaders you better listen to both albums instead of an EP.

Conclusion: “Gemini” is the kind of EP reminding us the great “Welcome To Hydra”-album although featuring an interesting selection of remixes.

Best songs: “Gemini”, “Gemini – Vanguard ColdEdit Mix”.

Forces Of Light – Darklights (CD Album WTII Records)

Genre/Influences: Electro-pop.

Background/Info: Forces Of Light is a ‘new’ Italian trio featuring both members of Stars Crusaders plus an extra member. The band is interested in the exploration of esoteric and occult world, which they transpose into electro-pop songs.

Content: Stars Crusaders already seduced me by their danceable and powerful space-pop and Forces Of Light appears to be another sensation. The music sounds like ‘happy-pop’ electro with a strong 80s approach, which reminds me of bands such as Feargal Sharky, Erasure ao. It sounds poppy and danceable although some cuts are a little bit hard. I also noticed a few guitar parts running through the work.

+ + + : “Darklights” doesn’t sound at all as a debut album. You clearly can hear the musicians behind this project are already experienced, which resulted in mature and masterly crafted songwriting. The electro-pop approach is quite classical and retro-like, but when you get multiple noticeable songs you just will be happy discovering this album. The vocals are passionate and totally matching with the music. It’s a great melodic and danceable work featuring excellent songs.

– – – : Some of the melodies are pretty similar and that’s maybe a point to reconsider on further work.

Conclusion: Forces Of Light is a little revelation, which stands for passion and qualitative electro-pop. An album to discover!

‘Click Interview’ with Stars Crusaders: ‘We Like To Blend The Sounds And Mix Ingredients To Create Something Different And Hard To Label’

Stars Crusaders is a ‘crazy’ Italian electro/future-pop band, which released their first official work in 2014. The band clearly revealed alluring electronics mixed with sci-fi themes. They now have released their second full length album entitled “Welcome To Hydra”, which invites the listener on a new mission towards the future, reaching the year 2517 where ‘all humans are moving to Hydra, looking for a new era of peace and prosperity, but a dark shadow appears on the horizon’. I invited the sonic cosmonauts to take a break on their mission and answer a few questions.

Q: Can you briefly tell us how Stars Crusaders saw the daylight and what have been the main sources of inspiration?

Yeda: Hello humans. We are Yeda, Davedax, Symorg and C1-C0. Dave and Symorg were schoolmates. They play electronic music since those years. In 2014 they started looking for a singer for a new ‘electro syfy’-project. I met them for the first time during the audition, and it felt like love at first sight. STARS[+]CRUSADERS were born that day. We immediately began to compose songs together and in less than one year we got the debut album ”New Horizons” finished. At the end of 2014 C-1C0 joined the band as a live drummer to add power to the live performances.

Our music combine elements of synth-pop, future-pop and EBM. The project is inspired by the world of science fiction, the songs are like chapters of a narrative, an epic saga set in distant galaxies.

Q: You’re definitely into electro-pop music, but what does this music style mean to you and what kind of ‘pop’ band are you?

Symorg: We are electronic music lovers and science fiction enthusiasts. Our music is like a syfy movie soundtrack. Listening to our music you can choose: let your mind travel through outer space or let your body dance like never before, or both. It’s up to you.

Aside from the personal tastes and influences, we try to break away from the bundle, we are not looking for something totally new or unknown but we like to blend the sounds and mix ingredients to create something different and hard to label.

Q: You’re clearly inspired by sci-fi themes, inviting the listeners for a new mission through the future. What is it all about and where does this ‘concept’ and/or fascination come from?

Yeda: Everything starts with the syfy concept. I wrote a short story divided into chapters that we used as guide writing music and lyrics. Dave composes tracks and loops inspired by chapters of the tale. Then I create melodies. We work together changing structure, verse and refrain until we are satisfied. Last step is to choose the sounds and the final arrangements. In the writing process the rhythm comes first, then melodies and lyrics. The first song composed together is “AETERNA”, and it’s also the first chapter of the saga. The real beginning of the journey.

As for music we use the concept story as guide writing the lyrics. Symorg and I work together, we turn chapters into songs. However the meaning of the lyrics is intentionally mysterious to leave free interpretation. Each song is independent, you can listen to it and feel your personal emotions and find your intimate significance. For instance on the first album “AETERNA” is the beginning of the journey, but could be also about death, “IN THE VENUSBERG” is inspired by “Tannhäuser” (opera) by Richard Wagner, in the second one ”THE GREAT EXODUS” is about the exodus of humans to a new planet, but also describes fear and hope of migrants and refugees of today. ”UNDER ATTACK” lyrics were written just before the terroristic attacks in Paris. Those days we realized that many words of this song became headlines and breaking news around the world. We were writing about science fiction, interstellar battles in distant worlds, but we were actually describing the present.

Q: Talking about the future, how do you imagine Stars Crusaders within 5-10 years and what are the items (maybe dreams) you want to achieve?

Davedax: We will soon be occupying a “WELCOME to HYDRA tour” that will be developed in 2018, while we will lay the foundations for the third album that will close the trilogy of the Stars Crusaders.

It is useless to hide the fact that we are ambitious and want to consolidate our role in the world’s future-pop scene and we will do it through our music, our style and our desire to communicate with our Electro SyFy.

Q: What are the main facts and memories coming into mind when you look back at the composition and recording of the album “Welcome To Hydra”?

Davedax: “Welcome To Hydra”’s creation has lasted about two years, so we have a lot of memories and had numerous fun moments in the rehearsal and studio room. We did so many concerts when we played the first album, but we were thinking and already discussing the second album. I remember a beautiful and energy-rich episode on the “Dark Xmas Festival” in Madrid in December 2015 where we were to finish the first single “UNDER ATTACK”.

We had created a very powerful song, but we needed something that definitely closed the song … well, this just happened before we got on stage, this event had given us an energy never seen before … a memorable moment. We got very beautiful and constructive moments when we worked on collaborations with female singers and other important bands such as Syrian who gave their voice (Andy Lab) for the song “SOULLESS”.

Creating a song, an album is for us a SINGULARITY that, as it is analyzed for space, is a unique event that tends to endlessly … as we are infusing the time when our music will be reproduced to give access to our world, out of time and space.

Q: What did you try to express on the new clip “Gemini” and what’s the importance of making clips today?

Yeda: The song is about Jungian concept of ‘shadow’, the unknown ‘dark side’ of our personality. ‘Everyone carries a shadow, and the less it is embodied in the individual’s conscious life, the blacker and denser it is’. (Carl Jung).

The video is inspired by “The Seventh Seal”, a crusader plays a chess game with his shadow. We tried to reproduce the ‘immortal game’ played by Anderssen and Kieseritzky in the 1851, same game used also in “Blade runner”. The “Shadow” starts with black pieces and in the end wins. It’s an oniric rappresentation of the struggle between the rational side and the dark side of our personality.

Making a video is no longer essential for a band, we are no longer in the 90’s and the MTV-generation. Every second is uploaded to Youtube 300 hours of video!! Spending energy and money for a videoclip is now useless but anyway we still have a lot of fun shooting videos. The director Domenico Morreale is a professional, but also a friend who always succeeds in translating our bizzare ideas into images.

Background/Info: Three years after their debut album “New Horizons” the Italian electro-pop formation Stars crusaders takes away on a new mission through the future, awakening at the year 2517 where ‘all humans are moving to Hydra, looking for a new era of peace and prosperity, but a dark shadow appears on the horizon’.

Content: Stars Crusaders are fascinated by s/f and are dealing with electro-pop music. They already released cool productions, but this new opus definitely sounds as the accomplishment of a still young, but talented formation. It’s not just electro-pop music, but a creative composition, which sounds powerful and sometimes reminding me of future-pop.

“Welcome To Hydra” sounds a bit like the offspring between Assemblage 23 and De/Vision (also for the vocals) with an extra and essential own touch on top.

+ + + : “Welcome To Hydra” doesn’t really take me by surprise, but confirms the growing maturity of a promising band. It’s not only a danceable and powerful electro-pop sound, it also is an elaborated composition carried by great melodies, evasive passages, some vintage electronic treatments and charismatic vocals. There’s a real harmony between all elements while this album features several brilliant cuts. There’re also a few cuts with female backing vocals and especially “Behind The Mirror” is a masterpiece!

– – – : I’m a little less convinced by the calmer and into reverie-like songs. But on the other side it also brings a more restful passage into this energetic pop composition.

Conclusion: The futuristic vision of Stars Crusaders and their vision of Hydra definitely appears to be a place of relief, but also great music! Up to 2517!

Best songs: “Behind The Mirror”, “Soulless”, “The Great Exodus”, “Under Attack”, “Gemini”.

The 52nd track on our free download compilation “Face The Beat: Session 4” (featuring 92 tracks) is by the Canadian act nTTx.

Stealing elements of EBM, synthpop and industrial, nTTx completes this sonic landscape with strong, melodic vocals, that range from soft and delicate, to powerful and in your face. nTTx is the new solo project of Gord Clement (Toronto,Canada) who was the former singer/songwriter for the band Atomzero.

nTTx’s first single, “Falls Beautiful” with a b-side Depeche Mode cover was released independently in May 2015. The single spent 4 weeks in the top 15 on the German Electronic Webcharts (GEWC) and received some great feedback. This lead to being signed to WTII Records and the release of his debut EP “Objective” in April 2016. The EP features remixes by Caustic, Stars Crusaders and Kiss is Kill.

Background/Info: Hailing from Italy, Stars Crusaders got signed to WTII Records quite fast after their creation. Inspired by science and space the band unleashed their debut-album “New Horizons” in 2014. They next released 2 EP’s and are now finalizing their new album. “Under Attack” is a song taken from the new work while the EP also features 3 remixes.

Content: “Under Attack” is into pure electro-pop music and is carried by a solid lead. The vocals are filled with passion, which fits with the powerful format of the title song.

The remixes have been made by Frozen Plasma, Advance and Rammsier. All the remixes add a real bonus to the work. Frozen Plasma injects an extra poppy touch while Advance reworked “Under Attack” with a great trance lead. Rammsier stands for minimalism and a more ambient approach.

+ + + : “Under Attack” sounds like the perfect song to announce a new full length album. It remains pretty pop-minded and powerful while the remixes add cool diversity.

– – – : One new song and 3 remixes of that song will not exactly give you a precise idea about the upcoming album. It’s just a teaser for fans and for DJ’s.

Conclusion: “Under Attack” is a promising new song, which I hope will be fully representative for the new album by those Italian electro-space freaks.

‘Click Interview’ with nTTx: ‘It Boils Down To Thinking Of Some Altered Reality Where A Great Song Was Done In This Genre, And How That Would Play Out’

nTTx is a Canadian solo-project set up by Gord Clement. This artist got previously involved as singer into the promising Atomzero. nTTx reveals similar, but more personal body-pop influences. I first discovered nTTx through a few successful remixes for bands like Stars Crusaders, Comasoft, Advance and more recently for Double Eyelid. After the “Falls Beautiful”-single featuring a cover version of Depeche Mode, nTTx is now back on track unleashing the “Objective”-EP on WTII Records.

Q: What made you leave Atomzero and starting the solo-project nTTx?

Gord: Some differences with Peter and I that we let go on. We were a good team in many ways, but in others, not so much.

Q: What kind of sound did you have in mind when you started nTTx and what does it say about potential sources of inspiration?

Gord: I wanted to get to a more raw sound, less instruments going on, with elements of my favorite genres in an electronic stew.

Q: You seem to like cover versions. You of course made a cover version of Depeche Mode’s “New Dress”, but I noticed you also covered “Should I Stay Or Should I Go” from The Clash. What fascinates you making cover versions and what how do you proceed?

Gord: I love hearing covers from other bands, so I thought I should do some too! Really, it boils down to thinking of some altered reality where a great song was done in this genre, and how that would play out. I got some people upset at that Clash cover, but I think no song is untouchable. Next one is a classic from Michael Jackson!

Q: You made a few, but noticeable remixes. How is it working on a remix and what kind of result do you expect?

Gord: Working on remixes is so much fun. I always approach it as… ‘what if I wrote this song’. In some ways I guess it is the same as covering a song, but I use elements from the original artist tracks. I always take the vocal track and look to it for patterns in rhythm and go from there.

Q: You’re actually starting with a live band, so how do you try to transpose the sound of nTTx on stage?

Gord: I never just want to do a copy of the songs live just as they were on the release. By adding the live drummer and guitarist, I give them creative space to let them discover their own ways through the music. Neither of them are ‘from’ the genre, more rock, so they lend a different feel. The synths are somewhat similar, but when a different person is playing, they can’t help but put a bit of their own feel into it.

Q: What might we expect from your first full length album? Can you already reveal some details about sound and production?

Gord: So far, it is shaping up to be generally a bit more aggressive than the EP. Will still be a amalgam of EBM, pop and funk as they are my calling cards I guess. WTII is very supportive with me and let me go the way I want. There may be some partnered song writing on it too, we will have to wait and see.

Stars Crusaders – Mothership (Digital EP – WTII Records)

Genre/Influences: Dark-pop, electro-dance-wave, body-pop.

Content: Last year Stars Crusaders unleashed their official debut album “New Horizons” revealing a strong potential and interesting ideas in progressive electro-pop music. “Mothership” was a song originally released on this album so this EP is a way to get back to their album and one of its best tracks.

The EP takes of with the “Original Version” of “Mothership”. This is a cool approach of modern electro-pop music carried by a fantastic and somewhat electro-wave like tune. There also is an interesting approach in the production of the vocals moving in between clear passages and more robotic parts.

“Mothership” has been remixed by two genius remixers. First comes the pretty clubby-version of Rob Dust and next a sophisticated approach by Rotersand.

“Supermarket Signs” was another attention grabber on the full length album and a rather logic choice to be placed on this EP-tracklist as well. The “Album Version” is just a way to bring this song back to life. It’s hard and powerful while still carried by a great melody line while the vocals reflect a real charismatic feeling.

“Supermarket Signs” was remixed by label mate Autoclav1.1, Interface and the rather unknown nTTx. Autoclav1.1 did it in a more –and expected, experimental and evasive way. The best remix for sure is the one by Interface for its great club potential.

Last, but not least we get an “Extended Version” of “Prologue”, which was the opening cut of the album. This reworked version sounds totally appropriated to serve as the final song. It’s quite different in style and influences revealing weird zombie-like vocals.

Conclusion: An EP always is an opportunity to bring album songs into the spotlight. We here get two great main songs and a few noticeable remixes.
