Two Years after the release of “11527” on tape, the Greek industrial/electro project Πύργος Αθηνων aka Athens Tower is releasing the new single-track “Ιπποδάμεια Θλίψης” (Hippodameia of Sadness).

Πύργος Αθηνών was formed in 2021, drawing inspiration from Greek poetry, classical Athens, loneliness, existentialism, and human critique. Noticeably the duo avoids visualizing their music and does not use social media. The two anonymous members recite poetry instead of singing, “striving to give voice to the city itself and imparting a human dimension to the impersonal metropolis”.

They have released the album “11527” cassette album in 2022 (including remixes by the Greek electronic projects Blakaut and Alpha Sekt) through Soil Records, preceded by the EP “210” in 2021. Due to their anonymity, they do not perform live.

Background/Info: Behind Sticks Over Carrots is hiding Greek producer  Alex π. He got involved with multiple projects; founder of Pi Electronics label, co-founder of Modal Analysis. H label, producing music ao. He got the idea of this record during the pandemic and found these tracks in his archives. The second part of the “Archives” will be released by Soil Records.

Content: This is a strong mix between Dark-Techno and EBM; bouncing tracks driven by uplifted beats. You’ll notice passages with mysterious chants injecting a sensual touch to the work. There’re also real although fragmented vocals on another part.

+ + + : This work sounds like a true symbiosis between music genres which during the past years became more and more connected. The result is an alluring underground production for dark Techno-Body dancefloors. “Red Corners” feat. In Atlas and “Pleba” both are dynamic tracks to get your body into a frenzy.

– – – : The last cut “Space Nannou” is a poorly inspired track compared to the rest of the work and serves as anti-climatic.

Conclusion: This is a brilliant sonic fusion between Techno and EBM which might appeal to fans of both scenes.

Background/Info: Zenau is a Parisian (France) based project driven by Gaël Durieux. After having been involved in Post-Punk and Shoegaze formations Gaël set up Zenau unleashing his debut EP on Soil Records.

Content: Zenau must be the antithesis to what this artist did before. The sound is 100% electro driven taking off with a harsh cut reminding me Dive. Industrialized sound treatments and ghost-like vocals. The work is progressively evolving and getting harder. EBM bass lines have been mixed with cold leads and pumping kicks. The vocals remain harsh and spooky.

+ + + : This is an astonishing debut! Zenau doesn’t reinvent any music genre but has accomplished a true tour de force. The way the songs have been crafted with icy sound treatments and harsh Industrial noises is simply terrific. I also like the string parts adding a true bonus to the songs.

– – – : My only regret is that there are just 4 songs featured.

Conclusion: Zenau is an absolute discovery and I hope a new sensation in the world of Dark-Electro/Industrial music. I hope this artist will get a great promotion as he really deserves to become renown.

Spammerheads, an old school EBM act from Valencia, Spain, is back with a new release on Soil Records: “Tar Blood / Cement Skin”. The EP comes in a limited edition of 300 copies in pink vinyl. The release will specifically attract all early Front 242 fans, and you can actually almost call them the Spanish Spetsnaz.

In a reaction the band says: “This is without a doubt our most personal work to date. During the previous works we have been experimenting looking for our sound and in this work we have found it. It is a raw sound, which brings us back to the sounds of the suburban factories, that were part of that scenario in which we lived when we were children. We feel very satisfied with the work because we believe that the album conveys that strange energy typical of today’s big cities, shrouded in smog, pollution air and decadence.”

Spammerheads formed as a duo (Ana Escudero and David Garrido) in 2019 and they first landed in the scene with the track “Lluvia Ácida” followed by the tapes “Bricks for Reconstruction” and “Espai, Temps i Matèria ” in 2021.

Adult has launched a remix of the Bestial Mouths song “Unshivered”. A video was equally made and can be seen below. The song is included in Bestial Mouths’ remix album “Thousandneedles” that features collaborations with SRSQ, Ash Code, Void Vision, Light Asylum, and more and which dropped earlier this month.

“Thousandneedles” will be available on vinyl and cassette versions this August via Fill-Lex Records and Soil Records.

In a reaction Adult says: “We got this remix request in the summer from Bestial Mouths and it was just the thing we needed to get us back in the studio again. It wasn’t like looking at a blank canvas and it felt more like collaboration in a way, which was much needed during such an isolating time.”

The track’s visual counterpart offers a psychological portrait of a person clawing their way to meaning. Director Jamie Parkhurst, who has previously worked with Los Angeles post-punk outfit, Death Bells, and experimental electronic artist Trevor powers, was helped by producer Yelena Akopian, stylists and designers Bradley Soileau and Elliott Evan, photographer Renee Parkhurst, DP Connor Ellman, and camera operator Alex Van Putten. The video was edited by editing is by Alex Nicolaou (Drab Majesty).

About Bestial Mouths

From their inception in 2009, the core root of Bestial Mouths has combined Lynette Cerezo’s voice with several genre influences across the spectrum of goth, industrial, post-punk, new wave, noise, metal, and other underground sounds using live acoustic and electronic drums and analog synthesizers. Since 2018, Bestial Mouths has been the sole project of Cerezo.

2019’s “Inshroudss” EP was the first Bestial Mouths release entirely written and conceived by Cerezo. The EP was released on the independent label RuneE & Ruin, which Cerezo formed together with friend and frequent collaborator Alison Lewis (Linea Aspera / Zanias / Fleisch Records).
