Dwayne Goettel, keyboardist, sampling and programming specialist for the industrial band Skinny Puppy, died on 23 August 1995 at the age of 31. He was found dead at his parents’ home in Edmonton, Alberta, of an apparent heroin overdose. Thirty-one years on, Goettel remains one of the defining figures behind Skinny Puppy’s sound between 1986 and 1995.

Dwayne Rudolph Goettel was born on 1 February 1964 in High Prairie, Alberta, Canada. A classically trained pianist, he grew up in Edmonton, where he played trumpet in his high school band before taking up piano and getting involved in the city’s small electronic music scene, including the groups Psyche and Water. He met cEvin Key in 1985 when Water opened for Skinny Puppy on their “Bites” tour. Key asked him to join the band the following year, replacing keyboardist Bill Leeb, who left to form Front Line Assembly.

Goettel made his first contributions to Skinny Puppy on the album “Mind: The Perpetual Intercourse” (1986). His technical knowledge of samplers and studio equipment, particularly the Ensoniq Mirage, helped steer the band away from its early synth-pop sound toward the more abrasive, sample-driven style of “Cleanse Fold and Manipulate” (1987), “VIVIsectVI” (1988), “Rabies” (1989), “Too Dark Park” (1990) and “Last Rights” (1992). cEvin Key later credited Goettel’s early command of the technology, calling him “the master of sampling.”

Alongside his work with Skinny Puppy, Goettel collaborated with Key on the side projects The Tear Garden, formed with singer Edward Ka-Spel, as well as Doubting Thomas, Hilt and Cyberaktif, which Key also shared with Bill Leeb. Goettel released solo material under the name aDuck and, in 1993, co-founded the label Subconscious Communications with Phil Western.

Skinny Puppy’s eighth studio album, “The Process,” was recorded in Los Angeles beginning in 1993, but the sessions were marked by drug problems and conflict within the band. Vocalist Nivek Ogre quit in June 1995, and Goettel and Key returned to Vancouver with the master tapes. Goettel entered a rehabilitation programme in Edmonton before returning to work on Download, a side project he had started with Key. He was later readmitted to rehab. On 23 August 1995, Goettel was found dead at his parents’ home in Edmonton; his death was attributed to a heroin overdose. “The Process” was completed by Key and producer Dave “Rave” Ogilvie and released in 1996, dedicated to Goettel’s memory, as was Download’s debut album, “Furnace.”

About Skinny Puppy

Skinny Puppy formed in Vancouver, Canada, in 1982 as a side project for cEvin Key (born Kevin Crompton), who was also drumming in the new wave band Images in Vogue. Key recruited Nivek Ogre (Kevin Ogilvie) as vocalist, and the pair adopted stage names to avoid confusion between two members both named Kevin. The band self-released the EP “Back & Forth” in 1983 and signed to Vancouver label Nettwerk the same year. The EP “Remission” followed in December 1984, and Skinny Puppy’s debut full-length album, “Bites,” arrived in 1985. Bill Leeb, performing as Wilhelm Schroeder, joined on bass synth and backing vocals during this period.

Leeb left the band in 1986 to form Front Line Assembly, and Dwayne Goettel replaced him, making his first contributions to “Mind: The Perpetual Intercourse” (1986). Skinny Puppy went on to release “Cleanse Fold and Manipulate” (1987), “VIVIsectVI” (1988) and “Rabies” (1989), the last featuring Ministry’s Al Jourgensen, followed by “Too Dark Park” (1990) and “Last Rights” (1992), the band’s final album for Nettwerk. In 1993 the group signed to Rick Rubin’s American Recordings and relocated to Los Angeles to record “The Process.” The sessions were affected by conflict and drug problems; Ogre quit in June 1995, and Goettel died two months later. Key and Dave “Rave” Ogilvie completed “The Process,” releasing it in 1996 in Goettel’s memory.

Skinny Puppy reunited for a one-off performance at the Doomsday Festival in Dresden, Germany, in August 2000, leaving the keyboard station on stage empty in tribute to Goettel. The band reformed as a full-time project in 2003 with producer Mark Walk, releasing “The Greater Wrong of the Right” (2004), “Mythmaker” (2007), “HanDover” (2011) and “Weapon” (2013). In a 2023 interview, the band confirmed it had split up for good after more than four decades together. Goettel’s death on 23 August 1995 remains part of that history: 31 years on, his contribution to albums including “Too Dark Park” and “Last Rights” is remembered as central to Skinny Puppy’s sound.
