“My Son of The Moon” is the latest single from Belgian IDM artist Kilmarth, paving the way for an upcoming album by Cedric Wattergniaux. This EP combines dark, introspective soundscapes with influences from IDM, trip-hop, and ambient genres, creating a hauntingly immersive experience.

The single’s artwork was designed by Stéphane Froidcoeur, also known as NW-Art Brut. Wattergniaux shares his admiration: “I was especially drawn to Froidcoeur’s raw artistic style; his creations are an absolute must-see.” The track also showcases vocals by Mad Mac, a collaboration Wattergniaux envisions as the start of an ongoing partnership. Rounding out the single is a remix by Signalstoerung, a project from the Adventurous Music collective.

Background/Info: Behind this project is hiding ‘Djane’ who next to be a musician is also co-founder of  Adventurous Music and Global Noise Movement, co-creator of the Global Noise Movement Noise Floors at Wave Gotik Treffen etc. The new EP of Inyan features four new cuts plus one remix.

Content: The tracks reflect pure, Experimental, Electronic-Minimalism driven by broken beats, mysterious atmospheres and (female) spoken, whispering, vocals. The last track is a remix by Signalstoerung.

+ + + : Great Electro-Experimental work with an excellent osmosis between minimalism and broken beats. The rhythmic injects energy and gets it all more accessible. I especially like both debut cuts while Signalstoerung also did a great job remixing the debut track “Ich Könnte…”.

– – – : I regret there’s no real variation in the production of the vocals although the whispering format makes the voice mysterious and sexy.

Conclusion: This is total minimalism and a kind of free-Electro style I fully support and recommend.

Best songs: “Thunder”, “Ich Könnte”, “Ich Könnte – Signalstoerung Remix”.

Background/Info: German project Signalstoerung (also active as a label owner, DJ and visual artist)is back on track, unleashing a new EP with six tracks.

Content: The sound universe of the German project remains a sonic enigma, mixing different elements together. Definitely Experimental and even Abstract, “A” still reveals more Minimal-Electro passages characterized by repetitive sequences and slow rhythms. But the essence of this work mainly lies in between Experimental and Ambient parts. The last track is pure Cinematographic/Soundscape-like creation.

+ + + : The songs give me the impression of having been created in a sonic lab instead of a studio. It mainly comes through on “a3”, but the global production is touched by impressive sound treatments. I also like the accessible style of this Experimental work, “A” becoming easier to get than previous productions.

– – – : It however remains a production made for a restricted number of music lovers.

Conclusion: Signalstroerung makes me think of quantum physics; hard to get and yet fascinating!

Best songs: “a3”, “a5”.

About Signalstoerung

Signalstoerung is the solo project of a German electronic musician who is also a founding member of the artist collective and microlabel Adventurous Music, and of the Global Noise Movement collective. Discogs lists the further aliases Heptagon, Hendekagon, H7 and halo7, and records activity in audiovisual events, DJ sets and podcasts since the mid-1990s.

“A” was released by Hymen Records on 26 April 2021 as a digital EP. It holds six tracks, in running order “a8”, “a2”, “a4”, “a3”, “a7” and “a5”. Stefan Alt supplied the layout.

Hymen Records issued the project’s debut album, reviewed here as Signalstoerung – S (CD Album – Hymen Records), in 2018, followed by Signalstoerung – UU (Digital Album – Hymen Records) in 2019. Adventurous Music released “Is This Art?” and “Sale” in 2019 and “This Will Improve Your Reputation As A Music Collector” in 2020. The “Occurence” single followed on Hymen Records in 2024.

Remix and production work runs alongside the solo releases, including contributions to Inyan – Sun (EP – Adventurous Music) in 2023 and to Kilmarth’s 2024 single “My Son Of The Moon”. “A” is the project’s third release for Hymen Records.

Genre/Influences: Experimental, abstract, cinematographic electronics.

Background/Info: The German project Signalstoerung is back on track unleashing its second full length album. One year after the “S”-album “UU” is a concept album ‘based on radioactive chemical elements; because of the extreme instability some of these elements exist only for split seconds – nevertheless they release enormous power during their short lifespan.’

Content: The subject of the concept has been transposed into a microscopic sonic fusion between experimental- and bombastic rhythms, a wide canvas of noises and a kind of evasive piano play. “UU” sounds like music coming from a wider dimension, a sonic universe that still has to be discovered, but which also is the trademark of experimental artists as Signalstoerung.

+ + + : The experiment has something delicate; the operator became a kind of sonic scientist creating noises. The result has a meaningful cinematic appeal featuring multiple dreamy passages. But other parts are also more anguishing and dominated by bombast, deep sound treatments and endless effects. The album is an original and accessible experimental work.  

– – – : Despite of the accessibility of this experimental work, it however remains a production that will only appeal to a very restricted and experienced audience.

Conclusion: Signalstoerung remains a particular experience in sound. I’m definitely not addicted, but yet fascinated!

Genre/Influences: Experimental, electronics.

Background/Info: Signalstoerung is a German project, which is also one of the founders of the artist collective ‘global noise movement’ and ‘adventurous music’. Signalstoerung is in involved with audiovisual events, DJ-ing, podcasts and composing own music since the 90s. “S” appears to be the first album under the Signalstoerung moniker.

Content: The main part of the album is dominated by heavy, bombastic drones/drums with some electronic treatments on top. It sounds pretty experimental, but still very unique in its genre. And it’s not that easy to seize the ‘genre’ this artist is dealing with. The last part of the work is more elaborated and we here can notice interesting and somewhat visionary electronic treatments. Some parts are even touching ground with IDM.

+ + + : The main strength and characteristic of Signalstoerung appears to be the heavy rhythmic section, which is quite noticeable and creating a very own sound DNA. Once you’ve heard this sound it will become easy to recognize the band. The best cuts are the more sophisticated ones at the end of the album. I’m especially referring to “S2 – Copenhagen Edit” and “S3”.

– – – : The first tracks are pretty similar to each other. There’s not a lot of diversity and it gives me the impression of a less accomplished production. There clearly is a hiatus between some of the opening tracks and the last part, which is really exciting.

Conclusion: I can’t say I was deeply impressed by Signalstoerung’s “S”, but I’ve to recognize it’s a project with a very proper sound identity and that’s an element you don’t often find in contemporary electronic underground music.

Best songs: “S3”, “S2 – Copenhagen Edit”, “S5”.
