Background/Info: Born in Italy, but operating from Vienna (Austria) you might have discovered Samuele Daccò aka Rlyeh1 by his debut album “The Grey Lights” released in 2015 on Mindtrick Records.

Content: Rlyeh1 composes a sophisticated format of electronics, which is related with different genres such as electronics, ambient, garage, dubstep and IDM. The work is carried by slow rhythms and supported by impressive space-like atmospheres. Some parts are a bit into ‘dance’ while others are more into experimental-lounge sort of.

+ + + : Whatever the musical stamp you want to put on Rlyeh1, this artist distinguishes himself from the rest by a high-tech and professional production. The sound is impressive while accomplished by cool stereo effects. The composition, properly speaking is definitely into experimentalism, but I like the accessible format, which will appeal for a wide spectrum of music lovers. One thing is for sure, Rlyeh1 is into modernism and progressive electronics. I especially like both debut tracks!

– – – : The songs are pretty different from each other and that’s rather surprising for an EP featuring 5 cuts. I don’t say there’s a lack of coherence between the opening cuts and the more into experimental-lounge final track, but Rlyeh1 maybe tries to exorcise too much sonic ideas on one release.

Conclusion: “Memories” deals with a wider spectrum of influences, which are characterized by evasive passages and other sensual rhythms. It’s definitely experimental, but clearly accessible!

Best songs: “December Mornings”, “Far Away”.

Rate: (7½).

Band: www.facebook.com/Rlyeh1

Genre/Influences: Electro-ambient, rhythmic-ambient, IDM, dubstep, experimental.

Background/Info: Mindtrick Records was set up in 2007 by Guido (Atiq) v.d Brink and is operating from Rotterdam (The Netherlands). While the label this year celebrates its 10th anniversary this label compilation got released at the end of 2016 featuring 16 bands plus an intro.

Bands: Atiq, Tangent, Rlyeh1, He3dless, Delete, Suboctane, Funckarma, Aeon Waves, Huron, The Travel, SB-Six, Known Rebel, The Travel ao.

Content: I always have considered Mindtrick Records as one of the most visionary labels in electronic-underground music. This is the kind of label, which really brings a bonus to the contemporary underground music by having a nose for intelligent and often avant-garde minded electronic bands. This new compilation is the right sound canvas to discover established bands from the label like Atiq, Delete, Tangent, Sb-Six, Huron, Aeon Waves, Rlyeh1, Known Rebel, He3dless, The Travel… but also a few guests, new names and possible next new signings. Funckarma is for sure the most famous name among the list.

While the first part of the sampler is more based around different kind of ambient music styles, the second part features the most sophisticated and danceable cuts leading the listener towards a sonic horizon made by IDM, dubstep and rhythmic-ambient.

+ + + : A compilation often is the right way to get an idea about a label’s music taste. I think it still is a more appropriated format then streaming, but we all know the CD-sales are going downwards. And yet there are CD’s you better put your hands on especially when they’re exposing such fascinating and well-crafted music like “Frequencies Of The Mind”. Known Rebel and Delete both are without a shadow of a doubt my favorite bands on this series, both composing great sound sculptures supported by fascinating atmospheres. I also have to mention Suboctane and the more indus/IDM cut by Huron.

– – – : It’s not really a point, but I was rather surprised by the more ambient approach featured in the first part of the album. I’m more used to hear more dynamic work from some of these formations.

Conclusion: “Frequencies Of The Mind” is the right work to get more familiarized by the future-electronics of Mindtrick Records.

Best bands: Known Rebel, Delete, Suboctane, Rlyeh1, The Travel.

Rate: (7½).

Track 52 on our free download compilation “Face The Beat: Session 3” is by Rlyeh1. As you all know Side-Line has a very openminded musical taste and with “Splitted”, you will discover the dubstep taste we developed in the past few years. If you like Burial then this is a must listen to, at first we actually thought it was a Burial demo which we misplaced. But fortunately we quickly realised this was an excellent submission for our charity compilation.

You can listen to the track below:

Face The Beat: Session 3 by Rlyeh1

Samuele Daccò is the man behind Rlyeh1 and was born and bred in Milan (Italy). He currently resides in Vienna (Austria). His favourite artists are – and this is no surprise – Burial, Amon Tobin, Aphex Twin etc. which combined with his taste for other forms of art, literature and cinema contribute to his uncommon style. The project has one album out: “The Grey Lights”, which you can preview below (the track “Splitted” is not featured on this release, but it holds a multitude of other great tracks).

The least I can say is that the label from the Netherlands has a nose for finding new promising artists. Rlyeh1 is one more band we’ll have to keep an eye on. Samuele Daccò was born in Italy, but operating from Vienna.

The Austrian capital has forever been a real epicenter when it comes to artistic creation. I have my reservations if “The Grey Lights” will enter in history like the legendary ‘Jügendstil’-movement, but there’s an interesting description of the music genre. Rlyeh1 defines his sound like ‘post-dubstep’ and ‘future-garage’.

In the end it doesn’t sound that innovative at all, but just a fascinating exploration of sensual-sounding dubstep. There also is an experimental flavor emerging from the work revealing the work of a pure sound creator. It sometimes comes a bit close to a soundtrack composition, but the constant deep and dubby vibrating sounds bring us back to the main essence, which clearly sounds dubstep inspired.

The exploration of sounds however remains one of the main strengths of the work. Samuele Daccò uses an impressive arsenal of sounds, which he likes to manipulate with studio effects. It sometimes creates an exciting glitch effect. The production of the vocals is a bit comparable to this experimentalism. We can’t totally speak about ‘classical’ vocal lines but more like in a fragmented parts. However the vocals have been produced in a rather sensual way. You’ll notice the somewhat murmuring words creating this ‘hot’ sensation.

There also is a somewhat paradox aspect running through the work. I already mentioned the efficient sexy vocal parts, but on the other side you also will notice a few impressive icy-sounding leads. The song “For Ever” is worthy of examination to discover the different poles of the production. When the sensual element starts to dominate Rlyeh1 clearly reaches a kind of climax, which you’ll hear on “Piece Of Paper” and “Cold White Hell”. The composition is made with intelligence while avoiding the standards of dubstep, which maybe explains why Rlyeh1 claims to deal with ‘post-dubstep’.

Conclusion: This debut album reveals a fascinating quest in sound research and experiments mixed with dubstep standards.

Best songs: “Piece Of Paper”, “Cold White Hell”, “For Ever”, “Iced Space”, “The Darkness”.
