Experimental group Psychic TV will re-release the archival album collection “A Prayer For Derek Jarman” on 23 June 2025. The set arrives via UK-based label Cold Spring in CD and digital formats, with pre-orders available on Bandcamp.

Unavailable for nearly three decades, the reissue has been newly remastered by Martin Bowes at Cage Studios and features revised artwork. The release documents soundtrack work by Psychic TV – primarily Genesis P-Orridge, John Gosling, and Larry Thrasher – created for the late British filmmaker and artist Derek Jarman. Many of the pieces were composed for his video journal “Home Movies” and the 1976 film “Sebastiane”.

The centrepiece of the album is “Prayer For Derek”, described by Cold Spring as “an invocationary prayer” based on Tibetan ritual. Constructed from field recordings captured on the Dungeness coast near Jarman’s Prospect Cottage, the piece incorporates birdsong, ambient wave noise, children’s cries, and ritual chants. The track was created to guide Jarman “in his after-life journeys.”

Additional compositions include “Mylar Breeze”, built around themes for early Jarman footage; “Rites Of Reversal”, initially conceived for a G. P-Orridge/W.S. Burroughs collaboration filmed by Jarman; and two movements titled “Loops Of Mystical Union” and “Elipse Of Flowers” drawn from the “Home Movies” project.

The whole was produced by Genesis P-Orridge – with track 6 co-produced by Larry Thrasher – and the recordings took place at The Building Site and Jhopdi Studios. The package includes original liner notes from both P-Orridge and Thrasher.

About Psychic TV

Psychic TV was formed in 1981 in London, England by Genesis P-Orridge and Alex Fergusson following the dissolution of industrial pioneers Throbbing Gristle. The group evolved from experimental sound collage into a hybrid of psychedelia, electronic, and esoteric pop.

Throughout the 1980s and 1990s, PTV released a prolific series of albums and videos, frequently incorporating occult symbolism and collaborations with underground filmmakers and artists.

By the mid-1990s, the band’s rotating membership included John Gosling (aka Mekon) and Larry Thrasher of Thee Majesty and The Splinter Test. The group remained active until Genesis P-Orridge’s death in 2020 after a battle of more than 2 years with chronic myelomonocytic leukemia.

The troubles for Genesis P-Orridge started earlier in 2017 after being hospitalized more than once. In a post in September 2019 Genesis P-Orridge said things were not looking good: “My breathing in particular is poor. At times 35% ov normal lung capacity. So most days to walk just a hundred yards to the nearest Pharmacy & store we need to wear an oxygenator. Otherwise we are too short ov breath to walk more than a few steps.”

A North America tour is also planned which starts at Le Poisson Rouge on the album’s release date.

McDowall’s lifelong interest in an elegiac solo bagpipe style called pibroch (ceòl mòr in Gaelic) has been an inspiration for much of his previous work (including Coil’s legendary “Time Machines”). His latest work, “A Thread, Silvered and Trembling”, both incorporates and transforms these elements via exploratory electronic processing, weaving an electro-acoustic tapestry of strings, shudders, voids, and voices. The album was Co-produced with engineer Randall Dunn at Circular Ruin Studios in Brooklyn.

The album features collaborations and instrumentation from harpist Marilu Donovan (LEYA), French Horn player Eric Davis (David Byrne & St. Vincent, Sharon Jones & The Dap Kings) and more.

About Drew McDowall

Drew McDowall is a composer and musician hailing from Scotland and now based in New York City. He was a pivotal member of Coil in the 1990s, playing a crucial role in some of their most esteemed works. McDowall’s artistry extends beyond his solo endeavors; he also collaborated with a wide range of artists including Kali Malone, Caterina Barbieri, Robert Aki Aubrey Lowe, Hiro Kone, Varg, Puce Mary, Shapednoise, and Rabit.

McDowall’s musical journey began in 1978 with the formation of the art-punk trio Poems, alongside his then-wife, Rose McDowall. The 1980s saw him as a member of Psychic TV. However, it was in the 1990s, particularly starting in 1994, when he regularly performed with and officially joined Coil, marking a period of significant output.

Relocating to New York in the early 2000s, McDowall co-founded Compound Eye with Tres Warren of Psychic Ills. His focus shifted towards solo projects in 2012, leading to the release of four albums under his own name and tours across North America, Europe, the Middle East, Asia, and Australia. In 2018, he began touring a live AV reinterpretation of Coil’s seminal drone work, “Time Machines”, at festivals worldwide.

In May 2023, Dais Records celebrated McDowall’s expansive career with “Lamina”, a 6 CD retrospective box set showcasing his impactful contributions to music.

Out next month on March 22 via the Infinite Fog label is a reissue of The Treshold Houseboys Choir release “Amulet”. The Treshold Houseboys Choir was the project of the late Peter “Sleazy” Christopherson of Coil.

Originally available in limited quantities at live shows and via direct mail-order in 2008 as a hand-assembled 4 mini-CDR set housed in a circular Thai Amulet case and never properly distributed, the material finally receives a wider re-release on vinyl and CD. This release was the second and final release for Christopherson’s post-Coil solo project.

As a bonus feature this reissue includes rare earlier compilation tracks and a few previously unreleased exclusive rough demos.

The Infinite Fog edition comes presented as a 3LP in a triple heavy gatefold sleeve and as a 2CD digipak, both including a poster of Peter Christopherson in his Cruella Deville coat. The whol was remastered by Jessica Thompson with artwork by Oleg Galay and with additional guidance from Peter Jenx.

About Peter “Sleazy” Christopherson

Peter Martin Christopherson, known as Sleazy, (27 February 1955 – 25 November 2010) was a versatile English artist encompassing roles as a musician, video director, commercial artist, designer, and photographer. He was notably a part of the British design agency Hipgnosis.

He played a pivotal role in founding the band Throbbing Gristle under the Industrial Records label. Following Throbbing Gristle’s split, Christopherson, alongside Genesis P-Orridge and Geoff Rushton (later known as John Balance), initiated Psychic TV.

His journey with Psychic TV was brief, leading to the establishment of Coil with John Balance, a partnership that spanned nearly 23 years until Balance’s untimely death due to a fall. Christopherson’s career also included a phase where he contributed to Throbbing Gristle’s revival. After moving to Thailand in 2005, he produced 2 albums for his solo project, The Threshold HouseBoys Choir. Christopherson passed away in his sleep on 25 November 2010.

Background/Info: Kadaitcha is an Ukrainian duo driven by Yurii Samson and Andrii Kozhukhar. Their music has been introduced as exploring ‘organic aspects of Noise, Post-Industrial and archaic aesthetics – an extreme experience for another dimension.’ They previously released a few albums and this year joined hands together with Ant-Zen to unleash their newest opus.

Content: The album stands for an eclectic production moving from Electro-Industrial stuff driven by slow rhythms and ghost-like vocals to Industrial & Experimental cuts reminding me of an imaginary transposition from Psychic TV into 2023. You also will notice that some passages sound like pure improvisation creating an apocalyptic sensation and a true Noise chaos.

+ + + : Kadaitcha definitely have created an own style and approach which sounds Industrial and Experimental but still Electronic on one side and moving at the edge of Noise on the other. It sounds to me as a sound collage creating an imaginary bridge between 80s Experimental music and contemporary formats.

– – – : I’m less into the more chaotic- and Noise parts of the work.

Conclusion: Kadaitcha is an interesting and precious addition to the Ant-Zen roster; an unpredictable album but always connected with Industrial music.

Cologne’s Blue Shell hosts a brand new event series: The Neue Klangordnung (New Sound Order, NKO). The newly founded NKO collective brings the “Blue Shell” back to its roots: rough industrial underground sound, rooted in body music (EBM), post-techno and the new cold / dark wave.

The NKO sees itself as a space for dance and sound experiments, “in which people regain control of their smartphones and their heads are freed for the experience.”

Max Esser explains: “By mainstreaming underground music genres such as techno, the NKO wants to shape new, alternative music styles of tomorrow with its DIY approach. This is inspired by sound pioneers such as Cabaret Voltaire, DAF, Test Dept. and Esplendor Geómetrico, and the next chapter of Industrial is to be entered into at NKO under the term Post-Techno. “Scarlet Misquote” is the first single from the band’s upcoming self-titled album and a first glimpse into their full-length debut, due October 27th via the Los Angeles and Minneapolis based label GIVE/TAKE. The band mixes punk, goth, death rock, and city pop into the mix.

Included in the single is the bonus “Drag on the Night” mix from labelmates Deathdance fresh off their own EP and remix of En Esch (KMFDM, PIG).

The industrial music landscape is filled with influential figures, but few have left as indelible a mark as the late Peter ‘Sleazy’ Christopherson. Born in Leeds, Yorkshire, on February 27, 1955, Christopherson was an English musician, video director, commercial artist, designer, and photographer, whose contributions to the music industry spanned various genres, from industrial and experimental to electronic.

Re-released now via Soleilmoon is “Live at L’étrange Festival 2004” holding his live performance at L’étrange Festival in Paris on September 13 2004. Titled “The Art of Mirrors (Homage to Derek Jarman)”, the 74 minute long track takes listeners on a sonic journey that reflects Christopherson’s mastery of samples and his otherworldly aesthetics. As a tribute to Christopherson and Balance, “The Art of Mirrors” was initially released in 2015 by Black Mass Rising (France), followed by another release in 2017 by Infinite Fog (Russia).

Christopherson’s career was as eclectic as his musical style. His father was a professor of engineering who later became master of Magdalene College, Cambridge. Christopherson himself studied computer programming, theatre design, and video at the University at Buffalo in Buffalo, New York, where he nurtured his interest in performance art and avant-garde photography.

Co-founding the Industrial Records band Throbbing Gristle (TG), Christopherson helped pioneer the industrial music genre before moving on to form Psychic TV with Genesis P-Orridge and Geoff Rushton, who later changed his name to John Balance. Balance, a Throbbing Gristle fan who became Christopherson’s intimate partner, joined him in creating their own project, Coil.

In a career spanning over two decades, Coil released a myriad of recordings and contributed to the work of other artists. After Balance’s untimely death, Christopherson relocated to Bangkok, Thailand, in 2005, where he founded his solo project The Threshold HouseBoys Choir. While Christopherson’s death in 2010 marked the end of an era, his legacy continues to live on, influencing new generations of artists and reminding us of the transformative power of music.

Edley ODowd (member of Toilet Boys, Psychic TV and Kylesa) is to re-release his debut album “F(our) ward” on the Italian label 13 as a trifold sleeved CD on February 23rd. Originally released as an ultra-limited cassette release via Flesh Prison/DeathBed Tapes, the album holds 6 tracks offering a mix of ambient, harsh-ambient and experimental sounds. This new release is an extended version featuring three bonus tracks and expanded artwork by ODowd.

ODowd is a long-time veteran of various musical scenes, and has collaborated and performed with such artists as Genesis P-Orridge, Deborah Harry, Lene Lovich, Tony Conrad and Shilpa Ray, and was also a member of Toilet Boys, Psychic TV, Kylesa and his brand-new death rock band Scorpion Tea.

ODowd explains: “I am proud to present what I consider to be the complete version of this art and music. The video clips that accompany these songs are designed to be trance-induced launchpads for the audio and vice-versa. A world within our own, in which we can see and hear new and exciting things.”

The videos accompanying the release of “F(our) ward” were shot on various locations in Mexico and Colombia.

Expect many projects from Edley in the near future, including the debut of his new band Scorpion Tea , who are currently in the studio working on their debut release, as well as several other projects involving art and music, currently being created.

The UK based Cold Spring label has a rather interesting re-release out on February 23 from Psychic TV: “Those Who Do Not”. The album holds recordings of a live concert by Psychic TV in Reykjavik, Iceland that took place in November 1983 and which was organized by HÖH and GRAMM Records.

The live album will be released on CD, and in 3 different 2LP versions: a version on red vinyl sold via Cold Spring only (230 copies) and one on white vinyl (230 copies) which will only be sold via indie record stores, plus a standard black vinyl edition.

At the moment of this live recording the lineup of the band also featured Peter Christopherson and Geff Rushton (John Balance) of Coil next to Genesis P-Orridge, Alex Fergusson, John Gosling, Godkrist, Grey Wolf, Hilmar Örn Hilmarsson, Thee TOPI Method and Priestess. This full show also holds the recordings of the Pagan marriage between Genesis and Paula P-Orridge conducted by Sveinbjörn Beinteinsson Allsherjargodi.

Out of print for 23 years, the material has been meticulously remastered, with the track order finally arranged into what was the original show.

Genre/Influences: Experimental, Minimal-Electro.

Background/Info: Chris Ianuzzi is an artist I remember from I, Synthesist. He also releases music under his own name.

Content: It’s hard to define and label “Maze”. It however sounds as an Experimental work in Electronics reminding me of Sleep Chamber for the cold sphere hanging over the songs. But I also experience the work as a contemporary format of Psychic TV. There’s something ‘retro’-like running through the songs which has been transposed into a contemporary format.  Instrumental- and sung vocals have been achieved. The last cut even has something Techno-driven.

+ + + : No compromises and far away from established standards seem to be the sonic philosophy of this album. Chris Ianuzzi composes Electronic music from ‘out of the box’. It sounds a bit like songs composed in a sonic lab. It’s quite diversified but revealing different noticeable cuts. “Sweet Over Time” is my personal favorite reflecting passion and vintage sound treatments.

– – – : The work remains however Experimental and maybe missing a bit coherence now and then.

Conclusion: If an alien had to compose Electronic music he for sure would sound like Chris Ianuzzi; extradimensional!

Background/info: “Imagining October” was originally written in 1984 but never released. Genesis P-Orridge (Throbbing Gristle, Psychic TV) and Dave Ball (Soft Cell, The Grid) released this work as a Soundtrack for the Derek Jarman film “Imagining October”.

Content: You immediately recognize the Soundtrack approach of the production, but still an explicit Experimental approach characterizing the sound of both protagonists. The tracks are diversified, featuring classically trained male vocals next to choir chants. The tracks are recovered by dark strings.

+ + + : This work was composed by 2 legendary artists from the UK underground scene. I like the album’s diversity, but especially the more accessible second- and third cuts. The work has a strong visual appeal mainly emerging at both cuts.

– – – : This album remains pretty abstract and without the movie you probably miss an important part of the global production.

Conclusion: This previously unreleased work clearly is a sensational collaboration between two legendary artists.

Out later this year via Cold Spring is the vinyl release of the official soundtrack to Derek Jarman’s 1984 short film “Imagining October”, with music recorded by Derek’s friend and collaborator Genesis P-Orridge (Psychic TV, Throbbing Gristle) and Dave Ball (Soft Cell, The Grid).

The limited edition 12″ vinyl features an etched B-Side, plus liner notes by James Mackay (Jarman’s producer, collaborator and archivist).

Derek Jarman put together a program of films for the London Film Festival, reflecting the cutting edge of the London avant-garde of the time. Recorded at the same time as “The Angelic Conversation”, “Imagining October” was filmed in the Eisenstein Museum in Moscow, Vladimir Mayakovsky’s grave at Novodevichy Cemetery, the GUM department store facing red square, and the fire temples of Baku in Azerbaijan. The painting sequences with a group of soldiers (Angus Cook, Stephen Thrower, Peter Doig and Keir Wahid) was filmed in London.

Jarman considered it one of the best, if not the best, of his shorter works. It was intended as an agit-prop work and the combination of music and imagery remains powerful to this day.

Coming up is the debut EP “Tuesdays” from ex-Psychic TV bassist Alice Genese and Shaune Pony Heath as Ov Stars. The five-song EP was produced, engineered and mixed by Jeff Berner, another alumnus of Psychic TV, at Studio G Brooklyn and Palace Of Sports. “Tuesdays” will be released as a download and on streaming platforms April 23, and on limited edition colored vinyl later in the year.

Alice (Psychic TV, Sexpod, Gut Bank) provided lead and backing vocals while Pony contributed lead and backing vocals and piano. They were joined by Berner on multiple instruments and drummers John Weingarten (Psychic TV, Naam), Randy Schrager (Jesse Malin, Scissor Sisters, Psychic TV touring drummer), and Richard Salino (Psychic TV live sound engineer).

Out on May 6th via Cold Spring is the Genesis P-Orridge & Dave Ball OST release “Imagining October”.

The official soundtrack to Derek Jarman’s 1984 short film “Imagining October”, with music recorded by Derek’s friend and collaborator Genesis P-Orridge (Psychic TV, Throbbing Gristle), and Dave Ball (Soft Cell, The Grid) will be released on limited edition 12″ vinyl. The material was recorded at the DJM recording studios in Theobalds Road, London.

The vinyl features an etched B-side and includes liner notes by James Mackay (Jarman’s producer, collaborator and archivist).

Derek Jarman put together a program of films for the London Film Festival, reflecting the cutting edge of the London avant-garde of the time. Recorded at the same time as “The Angelic Conversation”, “Imagining October” was filmed in the Eisenstein Museum in Moscow, Vladimir Mayakovsky’s grave at Novodevichy Cemetery, the GUM department store facing red square, and the fire temples of Baku in Azerbaijan. The painting sequences with a group of soldiers (Angus Cook, Stephen Thrower, Peter Doig and Keir Wahid) was filmed in London. Jarman considered it one of the best, if not the best, of his shorter works. It was intended as an agit-prop work.

About Derek Jarman

Michael Derek Elworthy Jarman (31 January 1942 – 19 February 1994) was an English film director, stage designer, author and gay rights activist. He was outspoken about his personal struggle with AIDS. On 22 December 1986, Jarman was diagnosed as HIV positive and discussed his condition in public. His illness prompted him to move to Prospect Cottage, Dungeness in Kent, near the nuclear power station. In 1994, he died of an AIDS-related illness in London, aged just 52.

Adult has launched a remix of the Bestial Mouths song “Unshivered”. A video was equally made and can be seen below. The song is included in Bestial Mouths’ remix album “Thousandneedles” that features collaborations with SRSQ, Ash Code, Void Vision, Light Asylum, and more and which dropped earlier this month.

“Thousandneedles” will be available on vinyl and cassette versions this August via Fill-Lex Records and Soil Records.

In a reaction Adult says: “We got this remix request in the summer from Bestial Mouths and it was just the thing we needed to get us back in the studio again. It wasn’t like looking at a blank canvas and it felt more like collaboration in a way, which was much needed during such an isolating time.”

The track’s visual counterpart offers a psychological portrait of a person clawing their way to meaning. Director Jamie Parkhurst, who has previously worked with Los Angeles post-punk outfit, Death Bells, and experimental electronic artist Trevor powers, was helped by producer Yelena Akopian, stylists and designers Bradley Soileau and Elliott Evan, photographer Renee Parkhurst, DP Connor Ellman, and camera operator Alex Van Putten. The video was edited by editing is by Alex Nicolaou (Drab Majesty).

About Bestial Mouths

From their inception in 2009, the core root of Bestial Mouths has combined Lynette Cerezo’s voice with several genre influences across the spectrum of goth, industrial, post-punk, new wave, noise, metal, and other underground sounds using live acoustic and electronic drums and analog synthesizers. Since 2018, Bestial Mouths has been the sole project of Cerezo.

2019’s “Inshroudss” EP was the first Bestial Mouths release entirely written and conceived by Cerezo. The EP was released on the independent label RuneE & Ruin, which Cerezo formed together with friend and frequent collaborator Alison Lewis (Linea Aspera / Zanias / Fleisch Records).

UPDATE: We wrongly published that the David Tibet album reissue of “Ferelith” came in 2 versions. In fact there are no two versions, but 2 different albums, the second being “Fontelatus”. The text has been adapted.

(Photo via Discogs) Out on April 30th is a reissue of the 2020 David Tibet (Current 93) albums “Ferelith” and “Fontelatus”. Originally released by Cashen’s Gap, House of Mythology now re-issues both albums.

The releases come in two different vinyl editions, the first is a transparent marbled vinyl (111 copies), the second version is a clear and black marbled vinyl.

The “Ferelith” album has a printed insert on Japanese style paper and a small card, with the album’s cover on one side, and the name of the album on the other side. Each card is hand signed by David Tibet.

This is the first and 2nd part in a series of 5 releases. Note that every single track is untitled and this on all 5 of the albums.

About David Tibet

David Tibet is a British poet and artist who founded the music group Current 93, of which he is the only full-time member. He was given the name “Tibet” by Genesis P-Orridge, and in January 2005 he announced that he would revert to the name David Michael, although he continues to use the well-known “Tibet” in his public career to date.

Early in his career, he collaborated with Psychic TV and 23 Skidoo. Tibet left Psychic TV in 1983 and founded Current 93 the same year. He has worked with Steven Stapleton of Nurse With Wound (of which band he is a member), Michael Cashmore, Douglas P. (of Death in June, on whose albums he has appeared several times), Steve Ignorant of Crass (using the name “Stephen Intelligent”), Boyd Rice, Little Annie, Björk, Nick Cave, Rose McDowall, Tiny Tim, Annabella Lwin (of Bow Wow Wow) and Ian Read of Fire and Ice.

Tibet is more recently also part of a project called Nodding God, whose debut album, “Play Wooden Child”, was released in 2019. Tibet provided the vocals for this album, singing in the Akkadian language. Nodding God also features Andrew Liles, and an anonymous artist credited as the “Underage Shaitan Boy”.

About Coil

Coil were an experimental music group, founded in 1982 in London, England and concluded in 2005. Initially envisioned as a solo project by musician John Balance (of the band Psychic TV), Coil evolved into a full-time project with the addition of his partner Peter Christopherson (formerly of pioneering industrial music group Throbbing Gristle).

Balance and Christopherson were the only constant members; other contributors throughout the band’s career included Stephen Thrower, Danny Hyde, Drew McDowall, William Breeze, Thighpaulsandra, and Ossian Brown.

After the release of their 1984 debut EP “How to Destroy Angels”, Coil joined Some Bizzare Records, through which they released two full-length albums, “Scatology” (1984) and “Horse Rotorvator” (1986). After departing from Some Bizzare, Coil established their own record label, Threshold House, through which they produced and released “Love’s Secret Domain” (1991).

In 1985, the group began working on a series of soundtracks, among them the rejected score for the first “Hellraiser”.

Financial difficulties slowed the group’s work in the early 1990s before they returned to the project on releases such as “Astral Disaster” (1999), and the “Musick to Play in the Dark” series composed of “Vol. 1” (1999) and “Vol. 2” (2000), as well as releasing several projects under aliases such as Black Light District, ELpH, and Time Machines.

The group started several smaller independent record labels, including Eskaton and Chalice. The group’s first live performance in 16 years occurred in 1999, and began a series of mini-tours that would last until 2004.

Following the accidental death of John Balance on 13 November 2004, Christopherson announced via that Coil as an entity had ceased to exist, ending the Coil discography with “The Ape of Naples” (2005).

Format: Digital, CD + Vinyl 7”

Background/Info: Death In June is a name, which needs no further introduction. Being considered as the ‘inventors’ or ‘Godfathers’ of neo-folk, the album “The Corn Years” was originally released by New European Recordings in 1989. It was the first Death In June production released on CD format. The album brings songs together from the early albums “The World Thät Sümmer” (1986) and “Brown Book” (1987). The compilation has been re-released featuring some reworked- and exclusive tracks plus the 7” vinyl featuring three more songs.

Content: This album brings us back to the early years of Death In June. Douglas Pierce has been assisted by some famous names from that period like David Tibet, John Balance, ‘Bee’ aka Paul Hampshire, Andrea James, David Tiffen, Rose McDowall ao. Both albums have been released after the mythic “Nada!”, which explains that as little extra among the non-album tracks from the original “The Corn Years” you’ll find “Behind The Rose (Fields Of Rape)”. This re-edition features a total of 7 songs that didn’t appear on the original version of 1989.

The neo-folk influences are there, but it moves much further featuring some apocalyptic ballads and even cinematic passages. From bombast to delicacy, the songs are covering a wide sonic canvas lead by the regular apparition of a solemn trumpet play. Male and female vocals are alternating or singing as a duo.

+ + + : My personal favorite period of Death In June definitely is the one of the early years; back to the 80s, which was a decade of music revolution and underground welfare. Death In June created something apart, something new and definitely visionary. Together with artists such as Psychic TV, Coil, Current 93 and related names Death In June left a creative trademark, which is easily noticeable on this album. This is an opportunity to rediscover the magic of “To Drown A Rose”, “Blood Of Winter” and “Come Before Christ And Murder Love”. I also have to mention the more delicate “Break The Black Ice” and “Behind The Rose (Fields Of Rape)”, which is one of the other extras on the album. Last, but not least I also have to say a word about the great, artistic 7” format digipak of the album.

– – – : My only disappointment is the 7”, which according to me doesn’t really add a bonus although a single remains a cool format. 

Conclusion: Some especially know Death In June for its controversy, but the 80s was about controversy! We’ve to get back to the real context of that decade to give controversy a place, but I definitely will remember Death In June as one of the 80s underground music artisans. I think this album is a kind of testimony.

Out on October 23 via Cold Spring is a reissue of the Coil best of releases “A Guide For Beginners – The Voice Of Silver” and “A Guide For Finishers – A Hair Of Gold”, this time as a 2CD set. The two releases have been out of print on CD for almost two decades.

Officially licensed from FEELEE, this edition spans Coil’s entire career, featuring tracks from all their major albums. They were hand-picked by Coil to represent their best work and originally released to mark their first performance in Moscow in 2001. The vinyl-only edition by FEELEE was released as two separate luxurious 2xLP editions in 2018.

Here are two tracks from the set. The first being “At the heart of it all”.

Coil was originally founded in 1982 as a solo vehicle for Geoff Rushton aka John Balance (he also joined Psychic TV at this time), before evolving into its permanent core duo with the addition of his partner and fellow PTV member Peter ‘Sleazy’ Christopherson. Christopherson had previously been an original member of industrial music legends Throbbing Gristle and a partner in leading design agency Hipgnosis, later becoming a go-to music video director.

Having left Psychic TV ahead of their 1984 debut EP, “How To Destroy Angels”, Coil signed to Some Bizarre Records for the release of the albums “Scatology” (1984) and “Horse Rotorvator” (1986). They then established their own label, Threshold House, to issue the landmark 1991 album “Love’s Secret Domain” plus a record of additional material from the LSD sessions entitled “Stolen & Contaminated Songs” the following year.

The remainder of that decade saw releases from pseudonymous projects such as ELpH vs. Coil, Black Light District and Time Machines, plus the soundtrack for Derek Jarman’s “The Angelic Conversation”, before a return to ‘regular’ studio output such as “Astral Disaster”, two volumes of “Musick To Play In The Dark” (1999 and 2000) and “Black Antlers” (2004). They also began performing live shows in 1999 and played a series of mini-tours over the next five years.

The final Coil album, “The Ape Of Naples”, was compiled by Christopherson following the accidental death of Balance in 2004 at the age of 42 and released at the end of the following year. Christopherson himself died in 2010 at just 55.

French Post-Punk/Rock artists Versari have released their third album “Sous La Peau”. This new album features guest musician Adrian Utley, founding member of the iconic Trip-hop band Portishead, playing guitar on “Tu te disais” and synths on “La peur au ventre”. Also playing as guest on the album is JD Mayer with synths on “Brûle”, “Tu te disais” and “Reviens”.

The album is out on vinyl and as a download via Bandcamp.

Jean-Charles Versari reflects on writing Sous La peau: “Looking at ‘Sous la Peau’ now, I see how most of the songs talk about loss: the loss of perspective, loss of loved ones, loss of creativity, loss of bearings. Sous la Peau is the permanent feeling you have in these moments, when some sort of fire is permanently crawling under the skin.”

Versari was formed in 2003 by the trio Cyril Bilbeaud, Laureline Prodhomme and Jean-charles Versari. Hailing from Angers, Rennes and Paris the trio brings straight forward new/cold wave mixed with elements from post-punk/hardcore, pop and rock. We first heard from the band via their cover of “Time to lose” (Tuxedomoon) released in 2005. Since then they released 2 studio albums and various covers of material by Pere Ubu and Psychic TV).

In October 2017 we announced that Genesis P-Orridge had been diagnosed with chronic myelomonocytic leukemia. After a battle of more 2 years Genesis P-Orridge died in New York City on March 14th.

The troubles for Genesis P-Orridge started earlier in 2017 when she had been hospitalized more than once. In a post in September 2019 Genesis P-Orridge said things were not looking good: “My breathing in particular is poor. At times 35% ov normal lung capacity. So most days to walk just a hundred yards to the nearest Pharmacy & store we need to wear an oxygenator. Otherwise we are too short ov breath to walk more than a few steps.”

Genesis Breyer P-Orridge was an English singer-songwriter, musician, poet, performance artist, and occultist and was the founder of the COUM Transmissions artistic collective and lead vocalist of seminal industrial band Throbbing Gristle. P-Orridge was also a founding member of Thee Temple ov Psychick Youth occult group, and fronted the experimental band Psychic TV. P-Orridge identified as third gender, and they preferred gender neutral pronouns when being described.

Cold Spring has announced the reissue of Coil’s 1992 album “Stolen & Contaminated Songs”, presented on CD and, for the first time, on vinyl. “Stolen & Contaminated Songs” was recorded and produced by Coil in 1992 and Swas the first of two albums recorded and produced by the band in that year. The album is composed of outtakes and unreleased songs from their prior album, “Love’s Secret Domain”.

The line-up in 1992 consisted of John Balance, Peter Christopherson, Stephen Thrower and Danny Hyde. The release will be reissued on CD (available here) but also on vinyl including a limited bone coloured 2LP (limited to 800 copies – you can buy it here) and a regular black double vinyl.

Genre/Influences: Experimental,  industrial, dark-cinematographic.

Background/Info: Marek Xavier Marchoff set up Different State in 1992 and can look back at an impressive discography. This new album is the first one in seven years so it in a way is a kind of return for Different State.

Content: It’s not an easy thing to seize the music if Different State. There’re so many influences running through the work, it’s not easy it all to define the sound. There clearly is an experimental taste supporting most of the songs, and which also comes back at some vocal parts. Electronics and real instruments have been used. The second part of the work is more consistent revealing a kind of early experimental/industrial touch reminding me of Psychic TV. The songs become more industrial-like featuring deep bass and slow rhythms.

+ + + : First of all the CD version reveals a great and original artwork, a kind of hexagon format in digipak. Sound-wise Different State has something proper and original, but also a bit retro-like reminding me of early industrial/experimental releases. Both last cuts are worthy of examination. I also enjoyed the more psychedelic-like “Mental” featuring guitar parts and sexy vocal parts.

– – – : The coherence is not always easy to find between all songs while the experimental approach makes it hardly accessible.

Conclusion: Different State doesn’t care about established standards, but simply follows his own music instinct.

Coil fans, attention, you will not want to miss out on this one! Out in a few weeks (closer to June) but already available for pre-order via Bandcamp, is the “Swanyard” 3LP Vinyl (available here) and 2CD set (available here).

This new release holds – hold tight – nearly 150 (!!) minutes of previously unreleased Coil recordings. The material was all written and recorded between 1993 to 1996 and was selected and assembled by Danny Hyde (Electric Sewer Age, ex-Coil, ex-Psychic TV, ex-Black Light District) from the studio archives.

The artwork for the release was delivered by Steven Stapleton, from a recalled dream by Jhon Balance. The mastering was executed by Martin Bowes (Attrition) in a Cage Studio.

Background/Info: Cold Spring Records is one of the ‘oldest’ and most recognized labels from the dark-underground scene. Dealing with styles such as industrial-, experimental, dark-ambient, ritual music and a few other related genres, the British label celebrates its 250^th release by a massive compilation featuring 29 bands and tracks.

Artists: Merzbow / Genesis Breyer P-Orridge, Penny Rimbaud, Nytt Land, Psychic TV, Coil, MZ.412, Zeni Geva & Steve Albini, C.3.3., Coil + Zos Kia + Marc Almond, Tunnels Of Ah ao.

Content: This is the perfect compilation to get familiarized with the sound Cold Spring is dealing with. A sound that has been always extreme and this for being miles away from commercial standards and fashion trends. Cold Spring Records is a label with a truly spirit and that’s probably the reason why such an important number of talented-, visionary- and recognized artists have signed to Justin Mitchell’s record company.

“Earthen” brings you an impressive canvas of artists and styles, but is mainly a way to get familiar –or simply rediscovering, tracks taken from the latest releases on the label. There’s just one previously unreleased song and that’s one from Coil.

+ + + : When you simply have a look at the tracklist you can only, but admit Cold Spring feels like the sonic cave of Ali Baba. We all will have our favorites, but I recommend the dark-ambient format made by Mz.412, the industrial-ambient of She Spread Sorrow, the industrial/noise experiments of Merzbow / Genesis Breyer P-Orridge, the pagan-ritual style of Nytt Land, the apocalyptic rock of Jotunspor, the industrial work of C.3.3. and even the kind of heavenly final track by Barry Adamson + Pan Sonic + The Hafler Trio. And of course there’s this exclusive song (cf. “Spastische (Trumpo)” by Coil, which sounds as industrial-jazz.

– – – : You really have to be an ‘experienced’ listener of extreme music genres to like this kind of compilation. Speaking for myself I think it’s a great sampler, but I regret –and especially for a celebration release, it has been not something more special; like bands featuring exclusive tracks.

Conclusion: Cold Spring feels like a relief for music lovers who’re listening to music others have never heard of. “Earthen” sounds as sweet noise for extreme music lovers!

Genre/Influences: Experimental, noise.

Background/Info: Originally released in 1999, “A Perfect Pain” has been now remastered and re-released. The work features two major artists from the industrial/noise fields. At one side there’s Genesis Breyer P-Orridge who’s one of the pioneers of industrial/experimental music. As member of Throbbing Gristle and Psychic TV he became a world-wide recognized artist for his ‘art’. At the other side there’s Masami Akita, the Japanese ‘king’ of noise.

Content: The procedure both artists have used to make this work come through is quite simple. Genesis Breyer P-Orridge wrote the texts while Masami Akita added his familiar noise work. The fusion between both artist is really interesting as it creates a good-old, early experimental/industrial format. This is the kind of production that could have been released during the 80s. The texts of Orridge are worthy of examination; there’s something very critical, but also philosophical.

+ + + : When two ‘giant’ artists work together you only, but can obtain something special. And that’s what this album stands for. The lyrics were performed in a narrating style, but it also sounds a bit ghost-like while the ‘music’ reveals a subtle noise approach. I know it sounds a bit weird to speak about noise and subtlety, but there really is something ‘refined’ in the work of Merzbow. This is the kind of work I like for reminding me to early 80s productions.

– – – : While this work will be adored by lovers of extreme sounds it will be hardly accessible for the others.

Conclusion: Cold Spring once again recovered a great album from dust. It’s an opportunity to (re)discover this interesting and successful collaboration.

Genre/Influences: Experimental, industrial, abstract music.

Background/Info: Cold Spring Records takes us back in time to re-discover a unique documentary consisting of the “Dead Cat”-movie originally released in 1989, but shown only at a handful of cinemas. The movie was written and directed by David Lewis while Psychic TV composed the music for this film. Genesis P-Orridge has been featured in this film as well.

Content: Let’s start with the DVD featuring the “Dead Cat”-movie. It’s a short film in black & white and which, will without a shadow of a doubt even nearly 30 years after its creation take the audience by surprise. It has something shocking, into provocation, and is totally surreal. I can imagine it’s the kind of movie that will appeal for lovers of Luis Buñuel, but the global sphere is darker and more shocking.

The music composed by Psychic TV totally matches with the movie. Repetitive electronic loops and industrial noises are getting the listener in their grip to progressively move towards an even more tormented approach featuring a diversified canvas of noises, sound crashes, screams and percussion sounds.

The second CD features 3 tracks. The opening song was originally released in 1988 and is still a soundtrack for a film called “Kondole (Thee Whale)”. We next get a cut from 1993, which sounds a bit in the line of “Thee Whale” and a last track, which is a short version (and the soundtrack to the film of David Lewis) of “Dead Cat”. The common elements between all cuts remain the abstract-, industrial- and experimental approach, which remains that unique and typically Psychic TV-like.

+ + + : This is the kind of release, which will definitely appeal for all lovers of Psychic TV. Next to the music you get this particular and tormented film. It’s an interesting release as images and music together became one. The work is dominated by a weird and anguished atmospheres, which remain typical for Psychic TV.

I especially like “Thee Whale” featured at the second disc for its tribal percussion parts mixed with abstract electro-industrial music and the whale noises. There also is a great didgeridoo passage running through “Dead Cat”.

– – – : “Dead Cat” is a track that will get you in its grip for 48 minutes. There’s not a lot of variation running through the composition and that’s why I definitely prefer the shorter version.  

Conclusion: Psychic TV remains one of the most unique bands from the 80s driven by a real phenomenal artist. It brings us back to a decade where artists were creative and composed music without barriers and no compromises. That’s why this album is an important release as a testimony from the industrial music legacy!

Cold Spring announce the release of the Psychic TV release “Kondole / Dead Cat” – a double CD and DVD collection, presented in an 8-panel matt digipak with booklet – you can order this limited gem right now.

CD1 features the complete, 48:06 min long version of “Dead Cat”, while CD2 contains 3 tracks: “Thee Whale” which was recorded in 1988 (and is the soundtrack to an unmade 23 minute film called “Kondole (Thee Whale)”, by David Lewis and Andy Crabb) and “Thee Shadow Creatures” which was recorded in San Francisco on 23rd January, 1993.

“Dead Cat” was recorded in London in 1989 and is the soundtrack to the film by David Lewis. That film can be found back on the DVD. “Dead Cat” was released in 1989, and shown only at a handful of cinemas that year, including once at the Scala Cinema in London. It was never issued on general release and has only recently been uncovered by David Lewis (writer & director).

This package presents the full film, re-authored from the original source. The film itself features starring roles from cult film director Derek Jarman, Andrew Tiernan (“The Pianist”, “300”, “The Bunker”, Derek Jarman’s “Edward II”) and Genesis P-Orridge (Psychic TV, Throbbing Gristle). The film features the music of Psychic TV, included here on CD1.

Not so good news for Genesis P-Orridge who has received the unpleasant news that she has been diagnosed with chronic myelomonocytic leukemia. Genesis P-Orridge will begin treatments next week on Monday 23rd. As a result the Psychic TV/PTV3 detour of Europe due to begin this Sunday 22nd is now postponed.

The troubles for Genesis P-Orridge started earlier this year, during the last 2 months she has been hospitalized more than once, but at least she now knows what she is fighting against.

Out now is the Psychic TV rareties release “Pagan Day” which has been released now on limited red vinyl. You can get your copy right here.

The origin of the tracks starts shortly before Christmas 1984, when the core songwriters, Genesis P-Orridge and Alex Fergusson, of underground arts collective Psychic TV quietly released a limited edition record containing sketches and ideas for songs. Some songs would become later fully-realized arrangements, some would get abandoned.

Rumour had it that it was recorded in a single session over a cup of coffee on a lone 4-track cassette recorder above an old YMCA building in London, though later revealed that the recordings were from various sessions over the course of a couple years prior to the record’s release. After quickly pressing the songs to vinyl, the record was originally only available through Rough Trade for a few hours on December 23, 1984 and pressed on picture discs, which adorned a photo of P-Orridge’s first born, Caresse, in exactly 999 copies.

Genre/Influences: Electro-pop, experimental, minimal EBM.

Background/Info: Detroit based duo  Nicola Kuperus – Adam Lee Miller are back on track unleashing their sixth studio album. The title refers to the ‘concept’ of the work, which features numerous guests artists such as Douglas McCarthy (Nitzer Ebb), Michael Gira (Swans), Shannon Funchess (Light Asylum), Robert Lowe, Lun*na Menoh and Dorit Chrysler.

Content: The sound of Adult. always has been something apart. I remember to have heard songs from their early work played in electroclash clubs, which back in time symbolized a revival of electro-underground music. This work has a strong retro-inspiration as well. The sound treatments remain vintage-like and sometimes accentuated by the contribution of the guest artists. That’s probably the reason why some of the tracks evoke good-old souvenirs bringing me back to Psychic TV and Chris & Cosey.

Next to the experimental exposure “Detroit House Guests” also features more EBM-driven cuts. The songs are pretty minimal, but more danceable and heavy-like. Douglas McCarthy and Shannon Funchess both will bring you harder parts to dance to.

+ + + : Adult. brings you a creative exposure of modern electronics inspired and made with ‘old’ recipes and sound formulas. It creates a refreshing and diversified work, which is only accentuated by the input of all guests. There are several attention grabbers featured, but my preference clearly goes to the minimal-EBM driven “We Chase The Sound” featuring Shannon Funchess and “They’re Just Words” featuring the Nitzer Ebb front man. The other song featuring Douglas McCarthy is a funny cut for the lyrical content clearly evoking songs of Nitzer Ebb.

– – – : Some of the most experimental cuts aren’t the most convincing ones and clearly totally different from the ‘harder’ passages.

Conclusion: “Detroit House Guests” is a non-conventional electronic production, which sounds a bit like a modern version of Psychic TV, Chris & Cosey, Crash Course In Science and related names.

Best songs: “We Chase The Sound feat. Shannon Funchess”, “They’re Just Words feat. Douglas McCarthy”, “We Are A Mirror feat. Douglas McCarthy”, “Breathe On feat. Michael Gira”, “As You Dream feat. Michael Gira”.

Genre/Influences: Minimal-electro, electro-pop, experimental, cold-wave.

Background/Info: Spatial Relation is an American duo set up by Jacob Schoenly and Lissette Schoenly. I honestly never heard of the band before although I noticed that Lissette Schoenly did some guest vocals on a song of Factice Factory.

“Beyond The Zero” is the debut album of the band, which is released on vinyl format and reveals 8 songs.

Content: The influences running through this work clearly evoke 80s electro experiments. The most experimental –and exciting side, reminds me of legendary formations like Chris & Cosey and Psychic TV, but globally speaking the work is more into pop exploration.

The band clearly shows a fascination for analogue gear and that’s precisely what brings this 80s touch to life. They perfectly emulate the 80s spirit revealing multiple dark and experimental sound treatments. Lissette Schoenly’s are still very 80s like. She has this typical emotionless way of singing that injects a sterile aspect to the work.

+ + + : I like the minimalism of the work and the global production made of cold, analogue sound treatments. The eclectic approach mixing multiple influences is absolutely genius.

– – – : I’m missing one potential hit, but you’ll get several cool songs instead.

Conclusion: The analog approach remains a unique experience in sound. Spatial Relation reactivates 80s electro influences with style!

Genre/Influences: Neo-folk, industrial, experimental, neo-classic, cinematographic.

Content: Trisol takes us back in time, re-releasing 2 full length albums of Nature And Organisation. This project set up by British artist Michael Cashmore didn’t gain a similar recognition as other projects he was involved in although it has been a familiar and recognized formation for all neo-folk lovers.

Cashmore got involved in Current 93 (together with David Tibet) while he later on worked together with Marc Almond and Antony & The Johnsons. This artistic digipak features the albums “Beauty Reaps The Blood Of Solitude” originally released in 1994 and “Death In A Snow Leopard Winter” (1998).

Let’s start with the first album “Beauty Reaps The Blood Of Solitude” featuring the original tracklist of 11 songs plus 2 bonus tracks. This is an essential release for its musical eclecticism and the contribution of famous artists like David Tibet (Current 93, Psychic TV), Douglas P (Death In June), Rose McDowall (Strawberry Switchbalde) and a few more contributors. The involvement of different artists probably resulted in this quite diversified opus, which moves from pure soundtrack compositions to neo-folk passages to experimental- and industrial music to a kind of poignant chanson exposure. This album sometimes reminds me of Rome (one of the Trisol flagholders) for its artistic diversity mixing similar styles and building a sonic bridge between neo-folk, industrial and real ‘chanson’, but there also is a kind of fascination for Jacques Brel. This legendary artist has been recognized as one of Rome’s main sources of inspiration while Michael Cashmore made a personal adaptation of Jacques Brel (“To You”, which is one of the bonus tracks).

Nature And Organisation also revealed a meaningful and sensitive artistic creation, which has been accomplished with the playing of several different acoustic instruments like guitar, mandolin, flute, cello, bassoon and the violin. There’s a beautiful symbiosis between these instruments and the experimental touch.

The diversity of the work is also noticeable in the production of the vocals. David Tibet, Douglas P and the angelic timbre of voice of Rose McDowall plus Cashmore himself have sung on this album.

This work is an opportunity to (re)discover beautiful songs like “Tears For An Eastern Girl” revealing one of the most intimate parts of the work, but also the harder and more into industrial-sounding “Obsession Flowers As Torture” and melancholic-ballad sounding “Bonewithglory”. These songs once more reflect the diversity of the work.

Both bonus cuts are essential pieces as well. “A Dozen Winters Of Loneliness” is another poignant ballad-minded song revealing influences of neo-folk and even some pop approach while “To You” simply sounds like beautiful melancholia.

“Death In A Snow Leopard Winter” features the 12 original and untitled songs. This album seems to have been never fully finished and yet it was released. That’s rather strange, but the least I can say is that the result is simply remarkable although quite different from the other disc.

Cashmore again worked with several guest artists adding violin, viola and cello parts. The work is instrumental and leads the listener on a magic cinematographic voyage. This is the kind of work appealing for a visual performance on which you can simply dream away. It’s a beautiful work with a strong neo-classic approach (because of the instruments) creating a compact entity where every single composition appears to be a little piece of a great work. That’s maybe the reason why the songs remain untitled as none sounds more important than another. It also is quite difficult to give you favorite cuts because it’s the kind of work you’ve to listen to as a real entity. It makes me think about a real classical composition, on which each passage is essential.

Conclusion: This is a real interesting work, which totally fits to the Trisol roster, and is an opportunity to rediscover a somewhat forgotten artist.

In an hour-long podcast with Against Me! frontwoman Laura Jane Grace, former Psychic TV and Throbbing Gristle member Genesis Breyer P-Orridge has said that Caitlyn Jenner should be wary of referring to herself as a spokesperson for the transgender community. According to Genesis Breyer P-Orridge, Caitlyn Jenner has got very little in common with trans people of colour and lower-income situations.

Genesis Breyer P-Orridge: “Apparently Caitlyn is already saying things like, ‘It’s so difficult being a woman and having to decide which designer gown to wear when you go out at night…’ That’s not being a woman, that’s being a glamorous Hollywood figure and that’s not how it is for most people. There are lots of teenage kids on the streets of New York who are hustling and risking AIDS because they need to get money to transition, and they’re prepared to risk their lives because it’s such a deep need, and they don’t have that back-up system. (…) She doesn’t understand what it’s like for the ladyboys in Bangkok, or the transsexuals in Japan or people in Russia. She doesn’t know! Stop being a spokesperson.”

For the record, Genesis P-Orridge considers her person to be pandrogyne.
