Background/Info: Enrico Cerrato has been active since 2015 under the Petrolio moniker. He has already released multiple productions featuring several collaborative works.

Content: “Respira” opens the gate of a dark, sonic, universe which is bringing Dark-Ambient and Cinematic influences together. Heavy sound waves feature a true arsenal of noises, field recordings and electronic sound manipulations together. It creates music with a strong visual appeal but still passages with heavy, chaotic, Noise fields accentuated by drone effects.

+ + + : “Respira” brings related dark music styles together. You rapidly feel it has been conceived as part of a wider artistic creation between visuals and sound. It also is a complex and sophisticated work featuring an impressive sonic canvas.

– – – : Some of the tracks have been progressively built up without reaching an apotheosis. That’s what the work is missing.

Conclusion: “Respira” is touched by dark, evil, sonic forces which will please the darkest souls. It’s a tormenting experience.

Background/Info: This is an Italian solo-project set up in 2015 by Enrico Cerrato. He released -and contributed to, multiple productions. This work is based upon the music he wrote for a theatrical performance.

Content: The work features 4 tracks which are highly driven by Cinematic music. The composition remains Experimental and driven by a slow cadence while featuring icy sound passages.

+ + + : The Cinematic style has something dark and icy while the cadence and parts with heavy drones make it all more accessible. The songs are elaborated finding their apotheosis at “Molecole E Intercapedini”.

– – – : The work remains however accessible for a restricted number of music lovers and that’s not only because of the Experimental sound treatments but also because you’re missing the visual part of this ‘total concept’.

Conclusion: Cinematic music on the edge of Experimental music.

About Petrolio

Petrolio is an Italian solo-project set up in 2015 by Enrico Cerrato, who is also active in the metal act InfectionCode, the industrial project Gabbiainferno and the jazznoisepunk outfit Moksa. In 2020 Cerrato composed sound environments for the theatrical performance “L’Architettura della Disobbedienza”, conceived by Francesco Fassone and staged at various Italian festivals. “La Disobbedienza” translates the landscapes and field recordings gathered during those live performances into four studio tracks, released on October 28, 2022 through the Italian label Shyrec on digital and CD formats.

Genre/Influences: Experimental, abstract, ambient.

Background/Info: “Innersurface” is a new collaboration between Italian composers Cristiano Deison (Deison) and Andrea Gastaldello (Mingle).

Content: If you’re not familiar with the composition of both artists, and you’re in search of ‘new’ music horizons mixing experimentalism with sound intelligence, this is definitely an album that might catch your attention.

Both protagonists are mixing different electronic- and noise sources together. It creates a vintage, analogue effect reinforced by some field recordings. Somewhat into industrial music, but always characterized by truly experimental treatments, “Innersurface” has been accomplished with an impressive sound canvas. There also is a more soundtrack part running through the album revealing the diversity of the work.

+ + + : Deison & Mingle are truly sound architects. They’re decomposing and recomposing sounds with endless treatments, studio effects and feel driven by the simply passion of creation. It’s an original release carried by endless creativity, but still revealing a refreshing and mainly accessible experimental format. I also enjoyed the atmospheric side of the work.

– – – : Diversity definitely is one of the main adjectives coming into mind when evoking this work, but I have to admit I’m not convinced by all the influences. The somewhat cinematographic part is one of the less convincing ones. I can imagine the experimental approach of some tracks will not convince a wider audience, but Deison & Mingle aren’t clearly conceived to seduce wide masses…

Conclusion: The main success of this work is the complementarity between both artists. It feels like they’re composing music for years together and I can only encourage them to move on! This is experimental music with a real artistic and visionary attitude!
