Out now is the brand new single from La Carte Records’ own Julia Gaeta. On “Hangin On A Dream” the Paris-based musician blends post-punk, dark synth-pop and industrial. The single announces a new EP (including a collaboration with Perturbator) called “Blur Divine” which will be out on July 2nd. This already Julia Gaeta’s second single from her upcoming EP “Blur Divine”.

About “Hangin On A Dream,” she says: “It is about coming to terms with your desires, and realizing you may have never had them fulfilled. You’re grasping at something and it slips away, leaving you hanging, confused, wondering. The verses were written on the spot in a studio in Portugal. This is a dual-part song, one that begins very intimately and floaty, and then swells deeper into a trance-like state.”

For the upcoming EP Gaeta has been inspired by personal events, stories of those around her, and what she calls “the push-pull energy of gritty Paris nights”.

The EP was mostly written between two locations in Paris, beginning in 2020 pandemic lockdowns, after Gaeta had just moved to Paris from Berlin. In late 2021, Gaeta linked up with James “Perturbator” Kent, who took an interest in the track’s dark trip-hop sound. He produced and mixed the track, which coincided with a video by filmmaker David Fitt – an ode to Paris nights.

The EP was finally completed in 2023 and further produced by LA-based producer Alex DeGroot (Zola Jesus). You can already pre-order it below.

About Julia Gaeta

Growing up listening to metal, grunge, post-punk and goth music, Gaeta carries with her the influences of bands such as Alice in Chains, Depeche Mode and Killing Joke mixed with a deep love of ‘90s and early ‘00s pop and hip-hop. After playing guitar in bands for nearly a decade, Gaeta dropped her first solo single, “Weight of You”, in early 2022 – which featured a production and mixing appearance from James “Perturbator” Kent. “Weight of You” is set to be included as a B-Side on Blur Divine.

Julia Gaeta plans to tour her EP in the second half of 2024 and into 2025 and she is also beginning work on an LP.

Background/Info: The new Perturbator album comes five years after “The Uncanny Valley”. French producer James Kent is back on track unleashing nine songs featuring a few guests.

Content: “Lustful Sacraments” has something weird because of the multiple influences running through the work. We get a kind of intro-track, which is followed by a rather Gothic driven song, which is pretty obscure and features cavernous vocals. The next song is a bit harder, but here again there’s a Gothic approach supporting the song. But Perturbator is first of all an electronic project, which becomes more explicit when you’ll notice the heavy EBM bass line running through “Death Of the Soul”. A few other tracks become more Industrial-like reminding me of the power of Suicide. And the last song is more into a kind of atmospheric style, revealing a kind of desolation accentuated by somewhat whispering vocals.

+ + + : The album’s diversity has something disturbing, but all I can say is that this artist feels comfortable dealing with different kinds of music. I like the production of the vocals, creating a kind of foggy effect. The songs are well-crafted and there’s something to say about most cuts. I like the Gothic sounding title-track and the harder “Excess” (already released as an EP-title song), but “Death Of The Soul” is another cool piece for its irresistible EBM bass line. The global sound production is also worthy of examination; reflecting a great maturity and knowledge.

– – – : I don’t really have a problem with the diversity of influences and styles running through the work, but it sometimes creates the effect of a compilation.

Conclusion: “Lustful Sacraments” sounds a bit weird for its assortment of songs, but it’s a damned good work!

Best songs: “Death Of The Soul”, “Excess”, “Lustful Sacraments”, Messalina, Messalina”.

The name Sara Tsukiyama might ring a bell with some of our readers as her old band Liiaiira was featured on our free download compilation “Face The Beat : Session 3” with her project Liiaiira and the track “You Make Me Hollow”. Sara has a new project now, Succubist, which has launched its debut album “Blood Flow”.

You can expect a mix of catchy beats, haunting choirs and dark humor on the album by this Tokyo based project.

Sara Tsukiyama is an electronic music producer for 8 years living in Tokyo Japan and his been active on various music scenes, from IDM over industrial to deathmetal. She was also a member of the band As my Flesh Burns, an industrial powernoise group based in Japan. With Succubist she aims to merge retrowave / slasherwave with industrial, incorporating ideas from bands like X-Fusion, Perturbator, and Aborted.

Sofa King Vinyl was born out of label owner Max Wallis’ passion for vinyl records and this will be the label’s first release, should the project reach its goal. Wallis is also a graduate of the Music Business Program at Musicians Institute in Hollywood, California and has worked in various facets of the music industry, both on and off the stage.
