The Brussels-based Spleen+ label (a division of Alfa Matrix) has prepared a deluxe 7CD collector’s edition – “Resurgence” – which brings together 133 active bands from across the globe, spanning the diverse sub-genres born from post-punk’s iconic roots. You can order it now from the Alfa Matrix webstore and in digital download format from Bandcamp.

The release comes housed in a luxurious vinyl-sized box, and comes accompanied by a 28-page book. The book holds interviews from renowned producers like John Fryer and Jean-Marc Lederman, label managers, journalists, and iconic artists (including Red Lorry Yellow Lorry, William Faith, No More, Skeletal Family, Mona Mur, KaS Product, And Also The Trees, Clan Of Xymox, Attrition, Das Ich, Merciful Nuns, The Names, The Breath Of Life, etc).

The Mexican black electro act God Destruction has released an all new single, “Cyborg”. The singles comes after the July released “Panzerfaust” which arrived after two years of silent work and tragedy (Charles Black died from Covid-19).

In more band news, the band sees the return of the albums “Illuminatus” and “Novus Ordo Seclorum” on all known digital platforms.

Formed in Mexico City in 2009, the band brings an is a aggro / industrial/ black metal sound which first saw the light of day on their first EP “Satan Before To Destroy The World” followed by the second EP “VI:VI:VI (666)”. In 2012 the trio released “Illuminatus”, their first studio album followed in in 2014 by the full length “Novus Ordo Seclorum”. The trilogy ended with the 2016 album “Redentor”. In the next four years, the project released the single “Reincarnated” (2018) and the EP “Unholy Trinity” (2020) before being confronted with the untimely death of their friend and founding member Charles Black due to Covid-19. Their lyrics (in English and in Spanish) are mainly about Satan and satanism.

The UK based electro industrial act Novus has a new single uit, “Ess”. The single is out now via The Big Chair and is available via Bandcamp, Apple Music, etc.. The production for the single was done by Kyle Wilson of Auger, at The Studio Under The Stairs.

You will know the front woman, Sarahjane, of Novus from her previous bands Faithful Dawn, Scandacross and Hexedene. Sarahjane is joined live by Peter Jones (guitar) and Angie Blackstone (bass). This year the project is celebrating its 20 years in the European alternative music scene.

A follow up second single “Dimension” will be released shortly.

Genre/Influences: Cold-Wave.

Background/Info: Hailing from München (Germany), last year Elvis de Sade released their official debut-EP “Angelus Novus”. The band is now back on track to unleash their debut album featuring nine songs.

Content: It’s not an easy thing defining the sound of this band. Elvis De Sade is clearly influenced by some 80s Cold/Dark-Wave reminiscences, which they adapted into a ‘soft’ or ‘sweet’ format. The songs are carried by slow rhythms while the guitar playing injects the true spirit in the songs. On top of the album, you can hear a charismatic voice.

+ + + : What I like the most with this band is their unique sound and approach. It awakens 80s influences, but it never becomes a copy of another band. Elvis De Sade takes care to create a very personal sound, kind of Cold-Wave for the next generation. The work is not driven by power and rage but is supported with guitar playing that creates a mysterious although enchanting atmosphere. The last song “Eternal Doom” is the absolute highlight and a fantastic way to close the record.

– – – : I like the sweet approach in dark music by this band, but I have to admit I like it a bit harder and rougher.

Conclusion: Elvis De Sade is an atypical formation active at the Dark-Wave realms, but one worthy of examination.

Best songs: “Eternal Doom”, “Juliette”, “Presence To Handle”.

Background/Info: Hailing from Munich (Germany) Elvis De Sade signed to Young And Cold Records to unleash their debut work featuring five songs. Back in time we should have called it a mini-album.

Content: “Angelus Novus” sounds inspired by classical cold-wave music, but still has something very personal on top of their work. The songs are rather slow and definitely dark. I now and then got the impression of recognizing some Bauhaus elements.

+ + + : I like EP’s featuring different songs and without any remixes. It gives a better idea about the band you’re listening to and especially when it concerns a first work. The vocals have something fascinating for their clear, but charismatic production. The best exposure from the EP is the last song entitled “Mirror Reflection”. It remains a rather ‘soft’ track, but it has an elevating power. 

– – – : I can’t say “Angelus Novus” is featuring a potential hit. It’s an easy listening work, which now needs to be elaborated.

Conclusion: This debut work can’t totally convince, but might appeal for 80s lovers of cold-wave music. 

Best songs: “Mirror Reflection”, “Sorrows Vanish These Nights”.
