Genre/Influences: Dark-Ambient, Industrial.

Format: Digital, CD, Vinyl.

Background/Info: Croatian TeHÔM is a project with a rich and eventful past which is driven since 2010 by Miljenko Rajaković. “Legacy” is the second album ever released by Cyclic Law.

Content: “Legacy” sounds in the line from previous works; a strong Dark-Ambient music production intermixed and reinforced with Industrial sound treatments. The tracks reflect a ghost-like atmosphere accentuated by subtle field recordings and an impressive canvas of noises. You’ll also notice a few spoken vocals by guest performer Rob Bees Fisk (Curse All Kings, Common Eider, King Eider). Last but not least there also is a track originally composed by Arvo Pärt which has been totally reworked and retitled.

+ + + : This album contains all the ingredients for an achieved Dark-Ambient production. The songs are well crafted with a wide range of sounds and arrangements. This leads to an opus with a strong visual strength. Sound-wise, I like the deep, dark sounds as well as the pieces with bombastic percussion.

– – – : The work is fully enjoyable but missing a true apotheosis.

Conclusion: TeHÔM has a nose to bring Dark-Ambient and Industrial elements together.

Best songs: “Space For Dead Souls”, “Lamentation”, “Subterranean Waters”.

Rate: 7½.

Genre/Influences: Dark-Ambient, Ritual.

Format: Digital, CD, Vinyl.

Background/Info: Rob Fisk -mainly known for his Common Eider, King Eider-project, strikes back with the third full length-album of Curse All Kings. “Feral Earth” resulted from the collaborative efforts together with Fabian Van Beek (Kluizenaer, Lavvra, Hagiophobic), Bryan Bray (Gates, Sutekh Hexen) and Edie. (La Haine, Common Eider King Eider).

Content: The new work sounds like a continuation of the previous album with explicit, Dark-Ambient influences, but now spiked with a refined, Ritual touch. A few pieces with voice enhance the mystical nature of the album. The songs are very dark, carried by boiling sound-waves that end in an apocalyptic feeling. You will also discover some passages with Industrial sounds and even guitar playing.

+ + + : The addition of the Ritual element brings an extra dimension to this album and in a way a new sonic path for the project. The sung passages are a true bonus to the work. There are several cool songs featured but I highly recommend listening to the debut piece ending in a sonic climax.

– – – : The last cuts sounds as an anti-climax for being totally different from the rest of the tracklist.

Conclusion: A poignant and intimate sound fusion.

Best songs: “As The Spirits Watch Over Us, We Reciprocate”, “Wounds Of Land And Body”, “Ünmaal”.

Rate: 7½.

Artist: www.facebook.com/CommonEiderKingEiderCaribouPeople

Genre/Influences: Cinematic, Dark-Ambient.

Format: Digital, CD.

Background/Info: The Californian (USA) collective Common Eider, King Eider are back on track unleashing their thirteenth album to date. The work was released at the end of 2022 and features five tracks.

Content: The viola is the main characteristic in this composition. It creates a deeply melancholic mood which is joined by percussion and vocals. All together it creates a deeply, dreamy, and melancholic mood. The ghost-like vocal passages have something apocalyptic.

+ + + : I already heard great productions by this collective and I was often conquered by an authentic touch running through their work. It doesn’t sound that different for “Yearn” but the artistic achievement became only more noticeable. I have to admit I’m really connected with the unique sound of viola which for sure supports this work with a dark, dreamy atmosphere which also becomes spooky because of the spoken and whispering-like vocals. Both debut tracks are brilliant.

– – – : No true minus points to mention but the best tracks are right at the beginning of the work.

Conclusion: “Yearn” sounds as an intimate sonic travel throughout an imaginary, melancholic universe.

Best songs: “II”, “I”, “IV”.

Rate: 8½.

Genre/Influences: Cinematic, Dark-Ambient.

Format: Digital, CD.

Background/Info: This is the second album by Curse All Kings; an American project based in Berlin (Germany) driven by Rob Fisk (Common Eider, King Eider).

Content: Just as on the new Common Eider, King Eider-album, this work is also driven by the magic of viola. We get 4 extended tracks which are constantly moving from Dark-Ambient into Cinematic music and vice versa. Dark, humming, sound waves, strings, low sound treatments and even organ sounds create a very intimate sphere.

+ + + : And just as the last Common Eider, King Eider-album I also like this work. I don’t want to compare both albums to each other but you clearly notice there are similarities. It all sounds pretty ghost-like, tickling our imagination to face an ominous world. Both the opening- and last track are absolute attention grabbers.

– – – : Even if I truly like the last track, it’s maybe a bit too long going over the 35 minutes.

Conclusion: This work makes me think of a graceful horror production.

Best songs: “The House Painted Black With Ash And Blood”, “A Meditation For Inversion”.

Rate: 8.

They’re also organizing the festival L’Homme Sauvage that takes place in the Midi-Pyrenees (France). This region also is an important source of inspiration for their common work while it was also reflected in the last album of Common Eider, King Eider (one of the projects Yan Arexis is now involved with).

Content: “Le Rite” moves on where the debut album “Le Mal Des Ardents” stopped. The album is mixing influences like Ethereal chants and Industrial sound treatments together with Neo-Folk. But you’ll also notice passages animated by Ritual elements or a Jazzy-Industrial trumpet at another song. La Breiche has something authentic because of the acoustic and traditional instruments they’re using. That’s what also made the essence of their debut work. The songs are alternating instrumental- and sung passages while one of the last cuts is a kind of Experimental vocalizations.

+ + + : La Breiche stands for authenticity and that’s due to use of traditional and mainly Folk instruments like the hurdy-gurdy, trombone, guitar, bass, bells ao. The atmosphere has something pretty intimate and even more personal than the previous work. The addition of Electronic sound treatments and field recordings create this very personal result, which has something unique, but fascinating. This album feels like a sonic voyage throughout isolated landscapes recovered by old mysteries. I also have to say a word about the sober, artistic artwork of the digipak.

– – – : La Breiche is sometimes hard to seize and that’s probably because their music is more the fusion between numerous influences instead of an established music style.

Conclusion: This album makes me think of a sonic retreat, a way to get connected with your inner self and your deepest thoughts.

Best songs: “Démiurge Thaumaturge”, “Santa Méra”, “Etter Regnet”, “Monastery”.

Genre/Influences: Soundscape, cinematographic, dark-ambient, experimental.

Format: Digital, CD.

Background/Info: This album resulted from the common efforts and the fascination for nature between American project Common Eider, King Eider and the French project Cober Ord. Both have previously released some stuff on Cyclic Law. “Palimpseste” is ‘writing material, such as a parchment or tablet, used one or more times after earlier writings have been erased from it’. This album was recorded in different locations from the French Pyrenean. And that’s already what the previous Common Eider, King Eider album (cf. “Egrégore”) was all about.

Content: The album is an intimate exposure between 2 different projects, which have created a poignant sonic testimony from their stay in the French Pyrenean. The work has something humble, like a surreal ode to nature. Numerous field recordings have been mixed with electronics and self-made instruments. The sphere is dark, but never hostile. The sounds are icy, but never anguishing. “Palimpseste” is a dreamy, but mysterious voyage. Some passages are moving into a spooky sensation and especially “Reclamation Of Water” is worthy of examination. You will notice some deep vibrating vocal effects empowering this enigmatic track.

+ + + : Both projects are quite different and yet this album stands for a truly complementary result. The tracks have been meticulously elaborated. The atmosphere supporting the tracks is a noticeable element, which also creates an intimate feeling. That’s something I never experienced this way by listening to Common Eider, King Eider. There are multiple attention grabbers featured. I already mentioned “Reclamation Of Water” for the magic sound effects. I also have to mention both last cuts (cf. “Calling To The Feral Ones” and “As The Spirits Watch Over Us, We Reciprocate”) for creating a brilliant apotheosis to this work.

– – – : This work is not the most ‘typical’ release in the Common Eider, King Eider discography. That’s maybe what will hurt some of their fans.

Conclusion: It’s hard to define “Palimpseste”, but it sounds as very personal work filled with subtle- and emotional passages.

Best songs: “Calling To The Feral Ones” and “As The Spirits Watch Over Us, We Reciprocate”, “Reclamation Of Water”.

Genre/Influences:
Dark-ambient,
ritual, experimental.

Background/Info:
“Égrégore”
resulted from the common efforts between Common Eider, King Eider’s Rob Fisk
(aka B.S.s) and Arexis (La Breiche, Stille Volk ao). Common Eider, King Eider
remains a prolific project and this album is something particular for its
collaborative format and the concept as well. The work has been inspired by the
spirits of the Pyrenees present during those Dark Moon rituals.

Content:
The
album features 4 long duration pieces, which have been constructed with field
recordings, electronic manipulations and voices. Humming vocals joined by
subtle noises create a truly ritual style. The tracks have been progressively
built up creating a transcendental feeling.

+
+ + : The collaboration between both artists is a truly successful result. The
sound is not only intimate, but there also is something pretty intimate
emerging. The tracks crescendo reaching a climax at the final cut
“Bone.:.Soil”, which will hold the listener for 15 minutes in its grip. But
it’s not the ‘classical’ ritual release. There’s something atypical running
through this work where darkness and a kind of intimacy are melting together. I
also like the effect of the voices, which is one of the most essential elements
from the production.

–
– – : I don’t see minus points here, but it for sure is an album that will
appeal for a restricted number of people.

Conclusion:
This
album has something of a stubborn, but genius ritual release!

Best
songs: “Bone.:.Soil”, “Sun.:.Fire”, “Blood.:.Water”.

Rate:
(8½).

Genre/Influences: Industrial, dark-ambient,
death-industrial, ritual, experimental, drone.

Background/Info: Cold Spring Records is
one of the ‘oldest’ and most recognized labels from the dark-underground scene.
Dealing with styles such as industrial-, experimental, dark-ambient, ritual
music and a few other related genres, the British label celebrates its 250th
release by a massive compilation featuring 29 bands and tracks.

Artists: Merzbow / Genesis Breyer
P-Orridge, Penny Rimbaud, Nytt Land, Psychic TV, Coil, MZ.412, Zeni Geva &
Steve Albini, C.3.3., Coil + Zos Kia + Marc Almond, Tunnels Of Ah ao.

Content: This is the perfect
compilation to get familiarized with the sound Cold Spring is dealing with. A
sound that has been always extreme and this for being miles away from
commercial standards and fashion trends. Cold Spring Records is a label with a
truly spirit and that’s probably the reason why such an important number of
talented-, visionary- and recognized artists have signed to Justin Mitchell’s
record company.

“Earthen” brings you an
impressive canvas of artists and styles, but is mainly a way to get familiar
–or simply rediscovering, tracks taken from the latest releases on the label.
There’s just one previously unreleased song and that’s one from Coil.

+ + + : When you simply have a
look at the tracklist you can only, but admit Cold Spring feels like the sonic
cave of Ali Baba. We all will have our favorites, but I recommend the
dark-ambient format made by Mz.412, the industrial-ambient of She Spread
Sorrow, the industrial/noise experiments of Merzbow / Genesis Breyer P-Orridge,
the pagan-ritual style of Nytt Land, the apocalyptic rock of Jotunspor, the
industrial work of C.3.3. and even the kind of heavenly final track by Barry
Adamson + Pan Sonic + The Hafler Trio. And of course there’s this exclusive
song (cf. “Spastische (Trumpo)” by Coil, which sounds as industrial-jazz.

– – – : You really have to be an
‘experienced’ listener of extreme music genres to like this kind of
compilation. Speaking for myself I think it’s a great sampler, but I regret
–and especially for a celebration release, it has been not something more
special; like bands featuring exclusive tracks.

Conclusion: Cold Spring feels like a
relief for music lovers who’re listening to music others have never heard of.
“Earthen” sounds as sweet noise for extreme music lovers!

Best bands: Mz.412, Nytt Land, She
Spread Sorrow, Tunnels Of Ah, Common Eider King Eider, C.3.3., Penny Rimbaud,
Merzbow / Genesis Breyer P-Orridge.

Rate: (8).

Background/Info: The Californian collective Common Eider, King Eider strikes back with a ‘special’ work, which has been announced as the first chapter from a ‘duology’. The album has been announced as one of the band’s most accomplished productions and is meant as ‘a sprawling, audial exploration of wounds at once physical and spiritual, social and societal, natural and environmental’.

Content: The work features dark sonic corridors filled with icy, blasting sound treatments. The tracks are progressively built up, sometimes going over the 1 0 minutes and featuring a nice twist between electronic manipulations and real instruments. The violin play has something special, injecting a truly spirit to the work.

+ + + : Each new opus by Common Eider, King Eider appears to be a different experience in sound. This project is not repeating itself, but seems to explores new paths on each new work. But the common element between all works remains the obscure sphere hanging over the tracks mixed with a pure cinematographic approach. It remains the essence of this album, which is accentuated by an authentic touch. It works really well at “We Sing Over These Bones So That They May Rise Up And Run Away Into The Night”.

– – – : I can’t say that this is the best work I’ve heard from this project and that’s maybe because the tracks are somewhat similar-like.

Conclusion: “A Wound Of Body” is not just a dark opus or new experiment, it also has an authentic feeling and that’s what makes this album ‘artistic’. It resulted from a creative process, which sounds improvised, but fully coherent.

Best songs: “We Sing Over These Bones So That They May Rise Up And Run Away Into The Night”, “Sinew Stretched Over Crumbling Bones”.

Rate: (7).

Background/Info: Operating from San Francisco (USA), the Common Eider, King Eider collective is back on track unleashing a new opus with 4 long-duration cuts. The project claims to be ‘in direct opposition to the Trump Administration. We are against racism, fascism, bigotry, misogyny, and xenophobia. We celebrate diversity. We celebrate and advocate for women’s rights, LGBT rights, houseless people’s rights, environmental protection, and indigenous rights and indigenous land struggles. We celebrate creation through destruction’.

Content: This new opus moves on there where the last year released work “Extinction” stopped. It’s a new exploration of stormy dark & ambient music fields mixed with cinematographic passages. The haunting atmospheres are constantly hanging over the work and have a strong visual appeal. There also is a kind of cello-play (or sound) reinforcing the feeling of isolation this album has been made of. It also has a mystic expression leading the listener into an imaginary rite.

+ + + : Common Eider, King Eider accomplished a new overwhelming piece of obscure ambient music. The tracks are meticulously written, leading towards a climax, which comes through on most of the tracks. I like this constant haunting atmosphere, which also has something baleful. It creates this great visual appeal, which is an essential item when listening to good dark-ambient music. It sometimes feels a bit like a secret rite awakening evil spirits. The composition has been composed with an interesting arsenal of dark sounds and field recordings. A few screams of horror reinforce the strong emotional dimension of this work.

– – – : I especially like the final track featuring Sutekh Hexen and yet I have a problem with the final part. The track is progressively evolving towards a climax of solitude, but then falls down into an endless and less fascinating final passage. I also regret the sober artwork of the album which is in a digipak format.

Conclusion: If you like dark-ambient sensation mixed with cinematographic passages you’re definitely going to like this new album from Common Eider, King Eider. It’s an overwhelming production, which moves crescendo towards a sonic cataclysm.

Best songs: “Litha feat. Sutekh Hexen”.

Rate: (8).

I noticed that Cold Spring is celebrating its 30th anniversary this year so you can imagine this British label and distributor has a great history. “Pyre” got released end 2016 and features a sonic spectrum from the latest- and forthcoming release on the label.

Bands: Troum, Khost, La Breiche, Skullflower, Penny Rimbaud’s L’Académie Des Vanités, Tunnels Of Ah, Sutcliffe Jugend, Tenhornedbeast, Sun Ra/Merzbow, She Spread Sorrow, Coil, Common Eader King Eider, Trepaneringsritualen, Henrik Nordvargr Björkk, Dave Ball + Jon Savage.

Content: This sampler featuring 15 bands confirms the fine nose of label owner Justin Mitchell to sign original- although often ‘extreme’ artists. Cold Spring is a label for experienced fans of experimental-, noise-, power-noise-, drone-, dark-ambient- and other related genres. This sampler is an exciting mix of different genres, but still a mix between long-time established and recognized artists on one side and a few new, upcoming talents on the other.

+ + + : It all depends of your personal taste and favorite music styles, but globally speaking I like the great diversity on “Pyre”. The tracklist has been progressively built up and finally moving into a brilliant final part with tracks from Troum, She Spread Sorrow, Common Eider King Eider, Henrik Nordvargr Björkk and Dave Ball + Jon Savage. It also remains a particular and I dare to say emotional experience to re-discover the genius of Coil.

– – – : There’s no real minus on “Pyre”, but it for sure remains the kind of music you can’t share with everybody.

Conclusion: Cold Spring is a label that has no longer real surprises for all music lovers familiarized with the label roster, but “Pyre” clearly proves 2016-2017 will be remembered as being a great vintage!

Best bands: Troum, She Spread Sorrow, Common Eider King Eider, Henrik Nordvargrg Björkk, Coil, Dave Ball + Jon Savage.

Rate: (8).

Bees, Blaine Todd, Andrew Weathers, Andee Connors and Vicky Fong are back on track for a new sonic voyage and their first one released on Cold Spring.

Content: “Extinction” is a fully accomplished piece of music where elements of dark-ambient empowered by epic arrangements are some of the first noticeable elements. The trip progressively enters into haunted corridors of sound. It’s a bombastic work created by heavy drum sections and quite progressively joining ritual fields.

The work is mysterious and the cinematographic feeling reminds me of some legendary passages of Kubrick’s “Eyes Wide Shut”. Metallic sounds and icy, vitriolic atmospheres hang over the work until apocalyptic guitar playing brings us back into a nightmarish reality. The ritual exposure progressively gets back to the surface leaving the listener in a stupor.

+ + + : This opus perfectly mixes multiple influences into a solid and overwhelming ambient creation. I like the heavy epic blasts and bombastic drum sections while the ritual part of the album is the most exciting one.

– – – : There’s no real minus point, but I would have enjoyed an even more explicit ritual element, which I’m sure this collective is able to create.

Conclusion: There are some mysteries it might be better to never discover, but once you’ve heard this album you’d rapidly become addicted to its magical power. “Extinction” sounds like a dark- and secret rite than has been reactivated for the pleasure of dark-ambient and ritual music lovers.

Best songs: “Crystalline Shores”, “Black Bough”.
