Composer, dark electronics producer, and visual artist Elizabeth Bernholz – aka Gazelle Twin – today shares a new EP, “Black Dog Live”, out now via Invada Records. The new EP features four tracks recorded live at the Attenborough Centre for the Creative Arts, Brighton on the Black Dog tour, and comes accompanied by two videos from the ACCA show.

The new live EP features 4 tracks from Gazelle Twin’s fourth studio album, “Black Dog” (2023): “Two Worlds”, “Fear Keeps Us Alive”, “A Door Opens” and “Unstoppable Force”.

Bernholz explains: “Our performance at ACCA to a warm and welcoming audience felt significant in the journey of this album and tour. Strange coincidences and happenings also occurred during the making period in the space, which is on the site of the University of Sussex, that I attended some 18 years prior. These loops, cycles and ghostly encounters are a deeply embedded theme in the album, and so I feel extremely grateful to be able to release these songs.”

In further news, a unique “Black Dog” performance has just been announced for the British Library, London on 1 November (get tickets here). Taking place at the grand entrance hall of the Grade I British Library, one of the largest libraries in the world, “Black Dog” will be reworked by Gazelle Twin and Max de Wardener with the London Contemporary Orchestra, conducted by Robert Ames (their second collaboration after working together on “The Power and the Glory” with the BBC Concert Orchestra in 2022). The specially commissioned performance opens the British Library’s new season, “Tales of the Weird: An Autumnal Festival”, and attendees for the event will be able to see the new British Library exhibition, “Medieval Women”.

(Photo by Teri Varhol) Gazelle Twin – aka composer, producer, singer, and visual artist Elizabeth Bernholz – has announced details of a new studio album, “Black Dog”, set for release on vinyl, CD and digitally on 27 October 2023 via Invada Records. This is also her label debut with Invada Records and “an album about confronting fear, and the expectation that the things that lurked in the darkness when you were a child will disappear as you become an adult,” so Bernholz adds.

The album launches today with its title track, “Black Dog”. The track’s whispered narrative takes its lyrical rhythms from the children’s books Bernholz reads to her children and, she explains, its title comes from a recurring figure from her childhood, “a small black dog’s shadow, blacker than black, moving by my bedside – not terrifying but lingering. Looping. Tailing. Restless. Keeping me awake” before going on to explain that “now as an adult I experience a different kind of insomnia in the pitch dark, another kind of black dog paces at night.”

Talking about Minton’s work, Bernholz said, “I find the manifestations of AI very ghostly in nature, so it worked brilliantly for this film, incorporating the album cover illustration by Craig Humpston, interior walkthroughs and visual feedback. John’s film perfectly evokes the inky, looming and restless nature of childhood fear that inspired the song.” Minton goes on to say: “The track required the overriding atmosphere to be murky, dark, and ominous and then burst into life. The structure of the song guided the way whilst I fused Analogue and AI processing to create an unnerving dreamscape.”

It’s also the first time that Bernholz’s face is recognizable unlike her masked characters for previous releases.

Out on vinyl via Invada Records on 20 May 2022 is Lucrecia Dalt’s new album “The Seed”. You can now listen to the first track, “Venutian Offspring”.

The track depicts a moment of unhinged body horror, Dalt explains: “I wanted to play with the feeling of multiple paces in it, a voice pulse that keeps us grounded in the subjectivities of the women who are losing their sanity, a synth line that places us in the sci-fi side of the film, and a racing beat that ramps up the tension of all that gets unpacked in this scene.”

In “The Seed” lifelong friends Deidre (Lucy Martin / Vikings), Heather (Sophie Vavasseur / Resident Evil: Apocalypse) and Charlotte (Chelsea Edge / I Hate Suzie) travel to the Mojave Desert for some time away with the upcoming meteor shower as the perfect social media backdrop. But what starts out as a girls’ getaway descends into a battle for survival with the arrival of an invasive alien force whose air of mystery soon proves to be alluring and irresistible to them.

Dalt adds: “The score is heavily based on pulses that I made from tape loops from my Copicat tape delay, using various pieces of metal to create the sound of the horror parts by bowing them alongside digital synths and the Korg Monologue.”

“The Seed”’s release follows the Colombian artist’s collaboration with Aaron Dilloway, Lucy & Aaron, and her 2020 album “No era sólida” (RVNG Intl).

About Gazelle Twin and NYX: electronic drone choir

Gazelle Twin, aka Elizabeth Bernholz, was conceived in 2009, with the release of debut album, “The Entire City”. “Unflesh” followed, in 2014. In 2016, Gazelle Twin created “Kingdom Come”, an audio-visual performance depicting a fascist hell-scape based on JG Ballard’s final novel, released in 2017, and in 2018 Bernholz’s third studio album “Pastoral” was released.

Gazelle Twin is unsigned and releases music under Bernholz’s own label, Anti-Ghost Moon Ray, but has also released music on Lakeshore Records (US), Invada Records (UK), Last Gang Records (US/CAN), Moog Music Library (US), The Vinyl Factory (UK), NMC Recordings (UK), and Sugarcane Recordings (US).

NYX: electronic drone choir was created in 2017 by former creative director of London Contemporary Voices Sian O’Gorman and former producers of the Convergence Festival Philippa Neels and Josh Thomas. NYX is a collaborative drone choir using live electronics and extended vocal techniques. Collaborations to date include Hatis Noit, Iona Fortune, Alicia Jane Turner, Christina Vantzou and Belinda Zhawi, and recent installation / live performances include collaborations with Dan Tobin Smith for London Design Festival, performing with Sigur Rós at BST in Hyde Park, at Rewire Festival supporting Nicolas Jaar, and providing a live score at QEII Design Award for London Fashion Week 2020.
