Hertfordshire-based industrial-postpunk act History Of Guns kicks off 2025 with the single “Little Miss Suicide (25)”, released via the Liquid Len Recording Company. In fact, this is the band’s debut single in a 2025 remix. The accompanying video uses footage, originally filmed by Danni Cutmore on a VHS camera, of the band writing and performing the song at Earthworks studio in Barnet in 1998.

Produced by Max Rael, this single was mixed by Max Rael and Caden Clarkson, using all the original audio recorded back in 1999, and mastered by Pete Maher (U2, Pixies, Nick Cave, Depeche Mode, Nine Inch Nails). Written in 1998 by founding members Del Alien, Max Rael and Stagger Lee, alongside regular contributor Gary Hughes (who also plays the lead guitar melody), the rougher original version of this song was released in February 2000.

“Little Miss Suicide (25)” is out now, available to download, alongside the B-side “I Am Defective” and a trance remix by Gary Hughes.

Stagger Lee’s lyrics challenged the stigma surrounding mental health and suicide that prevailed at that time – an environment where openly discussing one’s personal struggles was discouraged. Projecting his own depression and suicidal thoughts on to an imagined female character, Stagger relays the character’s experience of not being taken seriously, as reflected in the title – a nod towards the popular “Mr. Men and Little Miss” series by British author Roger Hargreaves back in the 70s and 80s.

“This was our first song to really feature major chords, which Del wasn’t at all convinced by. In the end Stagger and I won him round by assuring him we were only using happy chords ironically to contrast with the dark subject matter. It’s probably the closest we’ve ever come to an actual proper pop song,” recalls Max Rael.

Del Alien adds, “We knew all too well that sincerity wasn’t respected or valued in the 90s, so from early on we’d incorporate humour amongst the darkness, we said because we wanted to reflect the whole of life and experience, the good and the bad, but it also gave us a way of talking about the terrible things that were happening to us and our friends, but we could never be accused of taking ourselves too seriously, or being emo or whatever. We may, at times, have taken this a bit too far at times.”

Last year, the band released their eighth album “Half Light“.

The video is both a remix of the dark ambient track “Drug Castle” from their latest album “Half Light” and a visual remix of footage from their recent short film, “Drug Castle”. The video builds on the dark story of a rumoured experimental and unethical psychological treatment centre, located somewhere on the coast of England in the 1960s and ‘70s.

The “Last Train to Drug Castle” video uses footage shot for the Lynchian experimental film directed by Howard Gardner, which you can view below.

The track is also out as a 3-track single and holds three tracks in total: “Last Train to Drug Castle”, “Survive the Night (single mix)” and “Drug Castle (Instrumental Writing Demo)”.

The remix is inspired partly by KLF’s “Last Train to Trancentral” and partly by those late-night adventures after the pub closes, going on potentially somewhere exciting, potentially somewhere dangerous. History of Guns co-founder and keyboardist, Max Rael, says: “It was actually Michel from UTM, a key part of our promo team, who suggested we remix Drug Castle. I don’t think it would have ever occurred to me, but the idea bubbled away in my subconscious. And once I let go of the idea of a traditional remix, and approached it more like my favourite kind of episodic writing that goes on a journey and tells a story, I got more and more excited about it. It was a lot fun of an absolute joy to make both the remix and the video. I can’t thank Michel enough.”

Publicist Michel Rowland, from UTM Music Group, adds: “I have no idea what Max is talking about. I didn’t tell him to remix anything. I simply asked him whether there was going to be some kind of single mix or single edit of ‘Drug Castle’, because he came to me with this fucking bizarre short film, and I wanted to know how I was supposed to pitch it to DJs and radio. Max is utterly insane! I do love him, but he’s an absolute nightmare.”

Today History of Guns present the short film “Drug Castle” which is also accompanied by the companion 3-track remix single, “Last Train to Drug Castle”, featuring remixes and alternate versions of the single tracks. The video follows the releases videos for the tracks “No Longer Earthbound”, “When You Don’t Matter”, and “What’s Buried (Will Rise)”.

The short film is made for one of the more experimental parts of their latest album, “Half Light”, in which they take their instruments to the beach, and experiment with different audio and emotional frequencies, “in an effort to contact beings from another world.”

Filmed, directed and edited by Howard Gardner, the short film “Drug Castle” comprises two tracks from History of Guns’ eighth album, “Half Light”: namely, “Drug Castle” and “Survive the Night”.

Producer, co-writer and keyboard player/programmer Max Rael says: “Drug Castle was the nickname given to a facility in England where they used to conduct what were often unethical, experimental, psychological procedures during the ‘60s and ‘70s. No one’s quite sure of its exact location, other than it was near the sea, and some of the sessions happened out on the beach. It was originally built for use in World War II, but no one seems to know what its original purpose was. Different psychologists and psychiatrists could effectively book it out, and then take patients or unwitting volunteers down there for however long, and do whatever they liked. There are some good stories from people who received really helpful treatment there, but it’s probably more famous for some of the awful horror stories and reports of deaths and extreme abuse. Apparently, there was very liberal use of experimental drugs and techniques, hence the nickname. One of the experimental treatments was called Frequency Therapy which involved using sonic frequencies to match or harmonise with emotional frequencies, which would cause a third frequency to be created, which caused some quite profound healing and bizarre experiences.”

“I first told Howard about the sci-fi plot I had for the album, one night after a few drinks when we were at Infest together a good few years ago. He’s been a solid, trusted and much-loved friend and collaborator on a range of projects over the years, so this seemed a perfect chance to continue our collaboration.”

Max Rael and filmmaker Howard Gardner are also collaborators in London-based experimental electronic trio, Decommissioned Forests. Gardner describes the process behind the Drug Castle film: “I listened to the tracks for the first time in a darkened room and they absolutely blew me away, so bleak and powerful was the imagery. I imagined the band all sitting around a campfire at night near the shore, playing the song while being plagued by demonic hallucinations or visions. I described this impression to the band, and they absolutely loved it, so we went from there. I’m a huge fan of David Lynch and I often solve filmmaking problems by trying to imagine what he might do. This was certainly the case with ‘Drug Castle’. Owing to the song’s length I imagined a slow-burning and ambiguous narrative with harsh lighting thrown by the fire, with slow edits and dissolves. For some of the more way-out visuals I took inspiration from Lucio Fulci (the decayed corpse-like figure) and The KLF (the trio of handmaidens sitting on the rocks). We shot it in a single evening in June, down on the Kent coast, and the band were very good-natured and cooperative the whole way – even when I asked Del to lie in the freezing cold sea and be splattered with fake blood. Max got an antique oscilloscope to work in the middle of a beach without any mains power, for which I think he deserves some sort of commendation!.”

Guitarist and co-writer, Caden Clarkson, who is both the newest addition to the group in its current iteration, and Rael’s son, says of both the recording and the video: “On ‘Drug Castle’ I had to take a different approach to what I’d normally do. I used the guitar as less of an instrument, and more of a means to create rich and somewhat haunting textures and soundscapes. I also used my Theremin to add the click beeping sounds and higher frequencies. The video recording was not at all what I had expected. When I read the script saying that Del would have to lay partially in the sea, I thought there would be no chance he’d do it, but he jumped right in and did such an amazing job of it, it was genuinely impressive to watch.”

Vocalist and co-writer, Del Alien adds: “I had not seen Howard in years! It was great to see him again. He had the video all planned out way before we got there. The last bit of the film was shot first, as it had to be in daylight, but I had to get on the beach with the freezing cold waves slightly coming up – sadly for me, I hate the cold! But to the others, great laughter was had. We misjudged the tide at one point, and I got frigging washed over! Luckily, Howard could see how bloody cold I was, and did that bit of the filming as fast as he could. And I must say, I think the end result of a very long and challenging day paid off.”

The Hertfordshire-based industrial-postpunk band History Of Guns has released a new single, “What’s Buried (Will Rise)”, from their latest album “Half Light”. In the single the band continues to explore psychological themes, addressing the repression experienced by non-conformists and the resulting systematic amnesia. The single, inspired by Freud and Jung, features a video influenced by “The Talented Mr. Ripley” which you can see below.

“How well do we really know ourselves? The “introspection illusion” suggests that the way we view ourselves is probably inherently distorted. In terms of the conscious, the subconscious and the unconscious, how much of how we think and behave is driven by each aspect? Freud & Jung’s theories of repression say that the more you try to bury something that happened, or some aspect of your self the more it will come back in some form or other as “the return of the repressed’,” says producer and band member Max Rael.

“As for the video, I’ve always been obsessed with that kind of high contrast black white look ever since I fell in love with Orson Welles. I was watching the recent adaptation of Patricia Highsmith’s Talented Mr Ripley books on Netflix, and there’s an episode where Tom and Dicky are out in this little two-man boat. Because the songs on ‘Half Light’ are aligned to the Greek Elements, I thought it’d be great to have this video in black and white, with shots of submerged objects floating to the surface. We had some help from ace director and VFX supremo Howard Gardner. I think the end result is intriguing, and a bit wrong, but hopefully wrong in a good way!”

“When we came back from hiatus in 2022, we wanted a completely fresh start so we wrote the industrial rock / metal album ‘Forever Dying in Your Eyes’ from scratch. We had half of ‘Half Light’ at least sketched out as an electronic album back in 2008/2009,” explains Max Rael.

“Fortunately, people seem much more comfortable with us being genre-fluid these days and it’s less cause for criticism. Back in the day, certain camps seemed to have a definite need for bands to fit neatly into particular genres and not stray too far outside of it, which meant some of our early stuff was maybe a bit misunderstood because people didn’t know where to put it. We’ve been genuinely amazed by the reaction to the first two singles and are in nervous anticipation for what people will make of the album”.

The result is the “Half Light” album, which also presented the opportunity to work with Pete Maher (U2, Pixies, Nick Cave, Depeche Mode, Nine Inch Nails). On this album, founding members Del Alien (vocals) and Max Rael (keyboards, programming) are joined by guitarist Caden Clarkson, the newest member of History Of Guns. The whole was produced by Max Rael, mixed by Max Rael and Caden Clarkson.

“I think most people know of either a moment, or something sadly longer, when you’re on your own, and no one knows where you are, how you are, or even if you’re alive or dead. I think this like a History Of Guns version of a ballad, for abandonment. But whenever we have something we think is beautiful, we always have to smash it up somehow. From an existential point of view it might be true, maybe we don’t matter. We are meaning-seeking creatures in a world with no objective meaning. Ultimately we have to find a way to make ourselves matter to ourselves,” says multi-instrumentalist Max Rael.

Del Alien adds, “It’s like the vain attempt to help people. Maybe they know it, maybe they don’t. It’s not a personal thing is it? Is this what society has done to us? Is it worth you thinking about? Getting cold in a box just to be burned and scattered to the wind, only to end up in the mouth of a dying junkie… or like sleeping with the sanest lunatic you ever met, but there’s no one there in the morning to make you breakfast. If the product is not good from the start, how can it be in the end? Losing the place you stand, just to hold another’s hand.”

If everything ends anyway, where else could we go? We pictured escaping the planet either through space travel, virtual reality or death. It is also about what we choose to leave behind as we shed one existence and go looking for another. That’s not to say History Of Guns don’t care about the planet. We recycle! Though apparently most of it ends up in landfill anyway.”

(Photo by Veronica) The New Zealand dark pop outfit Robots In Love today share their latest EP, “Gossip in Your Head: Remixed”. The EP is the follow-up to the title-track’s original single release in September. “Gossip in Your Head: Remixes” is out now on Bandcamp, Spotify, and all the usual digital music outlets.

The new remix EP is accompanied by a video for the remix of the title track by Auckland’s dark electro-industrial dance act The Mercy Cage. Premiering exclusively on Side-Line, the video is a DIY effort, created at home by Robots In Love’s Elenor Rayner, who says: “For some reason, that remix makes me feel really joyful, so the video is a bit of fun.”

On the “Gossip in Your Head: Remixed” EP you’ll find four different workings of the song, featuring The Mercy Cage and UK electronic artist Max Rael of Decommissioned Forests and History of Guns. Elenor: “I love the variety of the tracks; each one highlights a different aspect of the song. The Mercy Cage remix is so dancey and bursting with energy. It makes me feel really happy whenever I hear it. The Permanent Rain version is more of a classic goth mix. Max Rael’s remix has a touch of trance in it, which is very seductive; and The Sound Key show their style of grunge rock indie.”

Josh Wood from The Mercy Cage says: “Gossip in Your Head is a killer slice of synthpop, and it was lots of fun to pull apart and piece back together.”

Max Rael adds: “Robots in Love always have such exquisite electronic textures in their music, and harmonies to die for. It was a real thrill to get the chance to remix their new dark pop single ‘Gossip in Your Head’. I wanted to push the Lynchian dream vs nightmare quality in the first half into the middle section, and then pump the energy and take it in a different direction for the rest.”

About Robots In Love

Led by Australian artist Elenor Rayner, Robots In Love became Elenor’s focal project in 2017, following her move from Melbourne, Australia to Dunedin, New Zealand. Elenor is currently joined in Robots In Love by drummer, multi-instrumentalist and electronic artist Alex Burchell; and bassist Tony Lumsden.

Elenor began playing the Australian pub circuit as a bassist during the 1980s when she was just 14, before switching to producing music on an Atari computer, “which opened up a universe of creating sounds and moulding them into rhythms and melodies until they evoke the exact feeling I need.” She has gone on to release hundreds of songs, appearing on more than 50 CD releases, and has played literally thousands of shows around the world with multiple bands and projects, including Soulscraper (1991-1994), Sobriquet alias Sobriquet Nation (1998-2016), Snog (1999-present), and The Crystalline Effect (2002-2014), among others.

After moving from Melbourne, Australia circa 2015 to Ōtepoti (Dunedin), New Zealand, Elenor ultimately adopted the Robots In Love moniker in 2017.

Elenor recently contributed to the gargantuan Goths For Sanctuaries fundraiser project for animal refuges, and is a prolific remix artist, producing Robots In Love mixes for IKON (Australia), JA/VI (Sweden), Voidant (UK/US), Suburban Spell (Australia), Justine Ó Gadhra-Sharp (New Zealand) and several others in the last eighteen months alone.

In their latest incarnation, co-founders Del Alien (vocals) and Max Rael (keyboards, programming) are joined in History Of Guns by newest member Jamu Knight (guitars).

Asked about the inspirations behind the new album, Forever Dying In Your Eyes, Max Rael replies: “Del and I were both struggling with mental health issues. Previously, I think we’d found that being creative and making music, while not exactly making us any better, at least gave us a focus and a reason. It’s up to each of us to make our own meaning in life, and with this album I think there’s a kind of fatalistic acceptance. It’s subtitled, ‘Eight Songs for Turning a Corner’. Everyone has their own individual reality tunnel, and is a victim of all sorts of subconscious confirmation bias. As History Of Guns, we create a specific world, which we invite the listener to join with each album we’ve done. Hopefully, our world overlaps with the listeners’ emotional and mental landscape, so that for the length of the album, there’s a co-created space of escapism, openness, darkness and light.”

“Forever Dying In Your Eyes” follows on the heels of the album’s video-singles “You Wanted to Live” (May 2022) and “Running In Circles” (July 2022).
