(Photo by Pierre Frigeni) Out via October Tone (France) and The Animal Farm (UK) is the all new single and video from the French (Strasbourg-based) Hermetic Delight: “Lust for Life”.

“Lust for Life” is the band’s third single in 2023 and is a hymn to the present moment. Or as the band says: “A rebirth, an awareness. A desire to get off the moving train. A revelation inspired by the blessings of a context we all had to face a couple of years ago.”

The video itself shows three souls stranded in a surrealistic setting from the 1970s. Laurens Saint Gaudens, the video director, adds: “The white light of the morning slowly breaks through; it gives the three exhausted bodies their vitality. A musical choreography animates them. They regenerate and regain their strength in euphoria. It is the scenery of a Chirico painting that comes to life.”

In just over ten years of existence, the band Hermetic Delight has already lived several musical lives. Over the course of its releases (three EPs and a first album released in 2020), the trio composed of Zeynep Kaya, Delphine Padilla, and Atef Aouadhi, has gradually enriched its post-punk sound signature with pop impulses and avant-garde music.

Strasbourg-based post-punk / shoegaze act trio Hermetic Delight is back with a series of singles in 2023. “Inci” was released digitally yesterday and it is the band’s second track since the release of their album “F.A. Cult” in 2020. The track has Turkish vocals.

Hermetic Delight was formed in 2010 following the arrival of singer Zeynep Kaya. At the crossroads of shoegazing, post-punk, and pop, the band is influenced by My Bloody Valentine, Pixies, and Siouxsie and the Banshees.

The band has produced four EPs: “Universe Like Thousands of Red Alternatives”, “Heartbeat”, “To the Grave to the Rave!!!”, and “Vow”, all signed by the October Tone label.

Their first album, F.A. Cult, was released in 2020, produced by Charles Rowell of the band Crocodiles with artistic advice from Anna Calvi.

Genre/Influences: Wave-pop, shoegaze, post-punk.

Background/Info: Hermetic Delight is a French band operating from Strasbourg. They’re already active for a couple of years now and released their debut album “Universe Like Thousands Of Red Alternatives” in 2011 followed by a couple of EP’s. “Vow” is a new EP, which is more a mini-album featuring 7 songs.

Content: “Vow” is a composition covering different grounds while revealing intriguing and sometimes scary atmospheres. I think it could have been the right soundtrack for Sofia Coppola’s “The Virgin Suicides”. The shoegaze and dark wave-pop music is totally appropriated to this kind of dark theme.

There’s a constant moody and desperate feeling emerging from the songs, which musically evoke some 4AD bands. The somewhat shimmering female vocals are totally appropriated to this kind of music. The work also covers a somewhat post-punk feeling.

+ + + : I like the global atmosphere hanging over this work, which has something desperate and with a strong visual appeal. The guitar playing is really impressive for the global emotive aspect.

– – – : A few tracks don’t add any bonus and feel a bit like there’s much more potential in the composition that what came out of it.

Conclusion: “Vow” is an interesting view of French inspired shoegaze music and which will definitely remind you of good souvenirs from the late 80s. This is an enlightening piece of darkness.
