“The Beasts Came To The Town”, the 2020 album by the Ukranian electronic act Ginger Snap 5, is now available in a totally revamped version under the “The Beasts Came To The Town (RevAMPed)” title. It is not just a remastered version, this is a totally reworked version of the album.

Behind Ginger Snap5 we find Odesa based musician Romeo Soroka who combines a hybrid of dense electronic music, breakbeat, and upbeat with industrial. Below is a teaser for the all new version.

About Ginger Snap5

Ginger Snap5 was established in 2004 when Roman Soroka, after leaving his previous band, decided to shift his musical direction towards electronic music. In a span of three months, the project produced two singles, including “Hunting 4 (Child Mix)”. The track quickly gained attention among local DJs at Kyiv gothic parties, and Gothic.com.ua even hailed it as the “discovery of the year”. Over the next two years, Ginger Snap5 embarked on remixing various bands’ works, and in 2006, Roman met Johan Van Roy, who invited the project to contribute to the Noise Terror Productions compilation.

In 2007, the release of “Noise Terror 2 – World Wide Electronics” featured Ginger Snap5’s track titled “Feel My Rhythm”. This led to further appearances on compilation albums. Then, in 2013, Ginger Snap5 caught the attention of the SkyQode label, resulting in the official label debut single, “Break Me Down”, followed by the album “Snapped By You” in the autumn of the same year. However, the release of the second full-length album, “Against The Days”, via Dependent in 2017, proved to be a disappointment for various reasons. Consequently, Roman decided to alter his musical direction and parted ways with Dependent in 2018.

Throughout 2018, Ginger Snap5 embarked on exploratory ventures into different musical styles. In 2019, the project released “Insert Coin To Begin” purely for enjoyment. Continuing to experiment with musical directions in 2020, Ginger Snap5 unveiled a third album, “The Beasts Came To The Town”. Two years later, Ginger Snap5 released a fourth album, “Make me Bad”. That same year the project also appeared on the charity compilation “Electronic Resistance” from Side-Line.

Roman, dissatisfied with the sound of the previous album, decides to rectify it. Thus, the project transformed the remastering process into a comprehensive remake, leading to the release of an overhauled version of the album titled “The Beasts Came To The Town” in 2023.

The Ukranian electro act Ginger Snap5 is back with an all new album, “Make Me Bad”. The new full length comes after the release of the “Zaida” single released in June. In total you get a whopping 18 tracks including “Zaida” in two versions and a few instrumental versions of album tracks.

20% of the proceedings will go to the armed forces of Ukraine and the release can be purchased on Bandcamp where you’ll also find other ways to pay for this release.

We took the opportunity to ask a few questions to Romeo Soroka, the man behind the project. You can read our conversation while checking out the new album below.

Make Me Bad by Ginger Snap5

SL: The resitance mood is omnipresent on this release.

RS: When I was starting the first single and later I didn’t plan any specific mood for the album overall. I just had fun with the songs creating. But after all, when the war has begun and almost all tracks were done, I found that whole picture of the album has current riot/resistance mood. It’s not planned, but every song in one way or another brings content that says it.

SL: The title says it all too.

RS: This is often not an easy step, I wanted to choose something appropriate to the general mood of the album and at the same time laconic. But after looking at the album, I realized that I have everything in front of me and this time there is no need to “re-invent the wheel”. In my opinion, “Make me bad” describes everything perfectly.

SL: How difficult was it to record this album?

RS: I started this process after the release of “Zaida”. In the second part of June, when I gave my ears and my brain a little rest. Subsequently, the preparation process took much longer than I had planned. I thought I would just collect the singles, make the order of the tracks according to the mood of the album, get the volume levels right (you know, all those boring processes) and release it. But as it turned out (and it’s a completely understandable thing) I had some new thoughts about sound, composition, etc. In general, what began as a simple task, turned into a large-scale work and in some places completely redoing the moments in the tracks. In short, the point that was planned as a task for a week, took roughly speaking 2.5 months. Also, there were some funny (well, not so funny) moments – in some tracks I have the sound of alarms, and it was unclear whether they were sirens in the speakers or real ones air alarm, so I had to pause music and listen (grins).

SL: Stay safe Romeo and talk to you later !

Out now is a brand new 3-track single by the Odesa based Ukrainian electro industrial act Ginger Snap5 who also participated together with 54 other Ukrainian acts in our recently released charity compilation.

The single’s title, “Zaida”, refers to the foreign Russian occupier, and you can translate the word ‘zaida’ as ‘stranger’. The song itself is “about our military forces who beat the shit out of the Russian occupiers” musician Romeo Soroka adds.

To understand what the song is about, here’s a rough translation of the lyrics which are in Ukrainian. You will notice that the swearing is understandably omnipresent.

The fuck you came to us ugly zaida
Who do you think you are, a mad bastard
You will never, ever defeat us
“It” is in our hearts, in our head, not in the house

The gods of war send you greetings
you were a defiant orc, now you’re shreds
We Ukrainians are a hell of a weapon
Fucking go back katsaps to your swamps

In Moscow, explosions and alarms
Katsaps remnants are burning all around
ZSU roasts, artillery covers
brothers and sisters tear katsaps to pieces

The fuck your mother gave birth to you
you motherfucker will die here, shit, bastard of pigdog
You will never, ever defeat us
here are sisters with guns, here are brothers with guns

We are Ukrainians, we are a lethal weapon
shreds of katsaps rot along the road
This is our land here and our freedom
Fucking go back katsap to your swamps

In Moscow, explosions and alarms
Katsaps remnants are burning all around
ZSU roasts, artillery covers
brothers and sisters tear katsaps to pieces

Asked how difficult it is to record music these days in Ukraine Romeo says this: “It became much more difficult to make music. Besides the fact that the situation is unstable in the city and Ukraine, the war takes away inspiration and strength to implement ideas. There’s a desire, but there’re no strength or the mood. As for releasing, it’s the easiest thing, a matter of a few minutes – to upload to a couple of sites.”

You can download the single below.

Out via Space Race Records on September 25th is the return of the Klonavenus to the scene with the album “motion:less”. The project consists of Paolo Chemnitz and Saffio and the duo here present their 3rd album.

Expect 11 songs offering a combination of EBM, darkwave, synthpop and industrial. Also included are remixes by A Copy For Collapse and legendary Italian Electro/EBM-combo Templebeat.

From Italy with dark wave love

Klonavenus was formed in Rome in 2005 by Saffio (music & programming) and Paolo Chemnitz (vocals & lyrics). After two demos, the duo signed a contract with The Fossil Dungeon label and released “Metropolights” in 2007. One year later the band released a compilation of previously unreleased tracks. In 2010 they returned with the single, “The Loser” while held remixes by Dismantled, Autodafeh and Ginger Snap5.

In the Winter of 2013, Klonavenus released the official video for “Electro Body Killer”, directed by the Italian independent filmaker Domiziano Cristopharo. We had to wait until 2015 to see the band’s second album “Angst” being released, recorded in Berlin and mastered in the US by Rob Early (Retrogramme). The album also includes remixes by Spektralized, Cygnosic and Blank.

After two years of silence, Klonavenus released a new EP as a free download (“Last Life On The Left”), then appeared at the end of 2018 in a double compilation (“Complicity Content”) released by the label E|K , with a new song called “Welcome To Violence” featuring the voice of Elisa Tomaselli. At the same time, KV released “We Fly Away”, a 7″ vinyl.

Background/Info: Massiv In Mensch has already been active since 1993; but the German electro formation disappeared a bit from the radar during the past few years. This new opus stands for a ‘symbolic’ new beginning and the first album they ever released on Swedish label Katyusha Records.

Content: Massiv In Mensch moved a bit towards ‘classical’ electro-pop with a typical German flavor on top. The band has used to familiarize us with trance-driven electro-techno music, but now comes closer to the ‘nintendo’-pop of Welle: Erdball. I guess it’s not really a coincidence if ‘Honey’ (from Welle: Erdball) contributed to one of the songs.

Massiv In Mensch accomplished their work with several ‘guests’ while the second album reveals a festival of remixes by new label mates Trakktor and other artists such as Stefan Poiss (Mind.In.A.Box, Thyx), Kontrast, Ginger Snap5, Tritoxin and a few more less familiar names.

+ + + : This is probably one of the most versatile productions by Massiv In Mensch. I like their move towards a more ‘classical’ electro-pop sound, which is however strongly inspired by a typical German sound, which will appeal to lovers of Kraftwerk, Welle: Erdball and co. The work features great sound treatments accentuated by cool bleeping sequences and a few alluring choruses. I like most of these songs and especially the ones featuring male- and female vocals. Other cool cuts are the ones with great narrating voices (like the opening track).

The second disc is much more than simply an extra disc with remixes. There’s a cool diversity running through the songs and especially the song “Hamburg” appears to be a great source of inspiration for remixes. But my favorite track of the album is the “Altlast-Maschinen-Boss-Mix” of “Aggressive Leader” by Mirco Osterthun… who’s an ex member of the band.

– – – : I get the impression that Massiv In Mensch deliberately moved from their trance-techno music to get back to pure electro-pop. I didn’t have anything against their previous work and even believe it also made their originality. That’s a bit what I’m missing on “Am Port Der Guten Hoffnung”.

Conclusion: Not sure if “Am Port Der Guten Hoffnung” is announcing a new era for Massiv In Mensch, but it clearly sounds as something different and a kind of rupture with the past.

Best songs: “Hamburg”, “Türkis Ist Das Neue Schwarz”, “Port der guten Hoffnung”, “Le-Rav II” + “November – Tritoxin Remake”, “Aggressive Leader – Altlast-Maschinen-Boss-Mix”, “Telespiel Am Timmendorfer Strand – Bonus Track”.

Rate: (8).

Background/Info: Ukrainian duo Ginger Snap5 is a formation I discovered on the SkyQode with their excellent debut album “Snapped By You” (2013). Roman Soroka and Alex Pavluk now joined hands together with Dependent Records to unleash this second opus.

Content: It’s not an easy thing to define the sound of this band. They’re for sure inspired and driven by electro-pop fields, but the production has been mixed with technoid elements, ambient (space)-like atmospheres and a kind of harder, industrial flavor on top. “Against The Days” sounds miles away from the stereotypical electro-pop standards and rapidly appears to be a complex and elaborated production.

+ + + : Electro-pop music is often predictable and fewer bands are really trying to innovate or create something ‘different’. Ginger Snap5 is the entire contrary and that’s precisely what I expect from a ‘modern’ electro-pop formation. But I have to add they’re not what I would call an electro-pop formation; they’re bringing many influences and elements together, which in the end might appeal for electro-pop lovers.

I like their ambient/astral dimension, which is also reflected in the somewhat robotic-like vocal parts. The songs are often carried by solid leads, but especially the song “Pieces Of Regret” is a high light! The chorus running through this song is amazing!

– – – : Complexity and originality don’t always stand for accessibility! That’s precisely what I experienced with this work. You really need to listen carefully a few times till you really can seize the welfare of their sound. Ginger Snap5 is an antidote to classical electro-pop music, but it also is their main difficulty to seduce wider masses. They’re maybe missing a bit more elevating choruses.

Conclusion: Ginger Snap5 is one of those ‘aliens’ active at the electro-pop fields. They sound related with the music genre although they’re definitely different! But in the end I like this visionary approach!

Best songs: “Pieces Of Regret”, “Beyond The Line”; “Break Me Down”, “Polaris”.

Background/Info: ManOK is a Ukrainian duo, which already released a first album in 2012 on Scentair Records.

Content: “Dies Irae” clearly deals with pop influences, which have been joined and accomplished by other genres like electro-wave, EBM and gothic music. I also noticed some folk-, neo-classic- and even cinematographic influences running through a few cuts. The male- and female vocals are all sung in the Russian language.

The last cuts are remixes by Ginger Snap5, Anton Gagarin, Hyperhate and Invisible Devastation.

+ + + : ManOK clearly deals with a pop format you can’t directly link with another formation. The Russian language makes it very specific as well. I prefer the songs moving on the edge of body-pop music although the “Acoustic”-version of “В Эмпиреях”, which is more into soundtrack music, is captivating as well. The Hyperhate remix is a quite noticeable cut.

– – – : I can imagine ManOK is the kind of band that will get more recognition in their homeland and/or Russia instead of the world-wide electro-pop scene. I however think the album is missing some passion and especially highlights.

Conclusion: “Dies Irae” left me rather skeptical about the potential of ManOK although it’s an opportunity for electro-pop fans to discover a band from the Ukrainian scene.

Best songs: “Инкуб”, “В Эмпиреях (Acoustic)”.

Background/Info: Alexandr Krivoruko aka Alex Mental is the artist behind the Russian band Mental Discipline. I discovered this band on the debut album “Constellation” (2012), which had a great impact on me. The band released a few EP’s as well and is now ready to confirm its high electro-pop potential with this new full length. It looks more like an EP instead of an album because of the many remixes and no real new songs.

Content: A few songs have been previously released at EP’s and digital productions while other familiar songs have been remixed by an interesting list of bands featuring Assemblage 23, Mind.In.A.Box, Ginger Snap5 and [:SITD:] as most the famous names. Tess Fries (Dual Density) has been featured on two songs while another track features Pulcher Femina (remixed by [:SITD:]) and another one !Distain.

The hard dance-pop style of the Russian formation comes rapidly through. It’s an ultra danceable production merged with efficient and fully carrying leads. But Mental Discipline also deals with a few softer and beautiful songs.

The multiple remixes inject some diversity in the tracklist, sometimes seriously transposing the original versions into a more personal format. Paralyzed did a great job, but I especially have to mention Mind.In.A.Box achieving an amazing remix of “Precious Paradise”. I also –and quite logically, have to mention the great remixing skills of Assemblage 23. Some of the best cuts however remain the ones featuring the powerful vocals of Tess Fries.

+ + + : “Precious Paradise” features some beautiful ‘rare’ songs or simply songs you’ve missed if you’re not familiar with the entire discography of this band. This is why this album is fully recommended. I enjoyed the mix of dance- and future-pop, but still a few more evasive songs. There are a few great remixes featured and I especially want to mention the delicate work of Paralyzed, which reminds me a bit of Wolfsheim.

– – – : It’s just a pity the album has nothing that new to offer. The danceable aspect of the work also is an element that might took traditional pop lovers away. It injects a kind of commercial element, which is not that inventive.

Conclusion: If you like dance-pop music this is for sure a band that will fulfill all your expectations. Mental Discipline for sure is one of the hottest Russian electronic bands in the past few years.

Best songs: Precious Paradise – Mind.In.A.Box Remix”, “Over Horizon feat. Pulcher Femina – Paralyzed Remix”, “We Are No Machines feat. Tess Fries”, “Until The End”, “Pray For Me feat. !Distain – Island Chord Remix”, “Fall To Pieces”.

Rate: (8).

Content: The Cyferdyne trio reactivates their “Keep Your Silence”-album with this “Break Your Silence”-album. The 2nd full length by the UK band got a successful response from its original release in 2014. Digital Audio World has now re-released the original album together with an extra disc filled with remixes. This extra disc is also available as digital album revealing 3 extra remixes (which have been added to the main disc of the CD release as well).

“Break Your Silence” reveals 9 previously unreleased remixes by bands like C-Lekktor, Die Sektor, Ginger Snap5, Terrolokauts ao. The bonus remixes at the digital format have been accomplished by Assemblage 23, Aesthetic Perfection and Phosgore.

The first part reveals a few interesting cuts, but no real potential hits. Panic Lift did an interesting rough pop inspired job at the remix of “Fracture” while “Visions” has been remixed by Terrolokaust in a kind of rock-pop style. The guitar riffs inject this rock-minded input.

Aesthetic Perfection remains a real genius formation and without a shadow of a doubt one of the growing sensations in the scene. Their techno-body remix of “Numb” is an absolute masterpiece.

Referring to masterpieces, the second part of the work reveals a few more outstanding remixes. Cygnosic, Ginger Snap5 and of course the powerful ‘rave’ minded remix of “Numb” by Noisuf-X are pure lust for the dancefloors, but the best is yet to come.

Assemblage 23 definitely deserves to get an award for the most inspiriting remix, transposing “Jigsaw” in to a great vintage-minded version while remaining totally dancefloor minded. This is one of the best Assemblage 23-remixes in history!

I also have to mention the great remixing skills of Phosgore, which again confirms to be one of the most talented artists from the Noisuf-X class. “Cables And Codes” sounds now like a pumping industrial rave-pop song. Last, but not least, C-Lekktor also confirms his growing talent remixing “Disease” into a heavy, haunting dark-electro version.

Conclusion: There’s a great electro diversity running throughout the remixes, but it especially must be a real pleasure for Cyferdyne to get such inspiring remixes from most of the bands.

Best songs: “Jigsaw – Assemblage 23 Remix”, “Cables And Codes – Phosgore Remix”, “Numb – Aesthetic Perfection Remix”, “Disease – C-Lekktor Remix”, “Numb – Noisuf-X Remix”.

Content: The recently released “Dying Starts”-album by the Greek combo Technolorgy seems to have received a considerable success. I’m not that surprised about the positive response as this work revealed multiple electro-pop highlights.

One of the main tracks on the album is without a shadow of a doubt “Damsels In Distress” so it’s a rather logical choice the band has chosen this song as title track for the new EP (the 2nd taken from the album).

The original version takes off and simply confirms its solid pop potential, which is mainly carried by a superb, catchy tune. It’s a well-crafted and polished electro-pop song with a little dark shadow all over it.

We next get 2 remixes by the upcoming Ginger Snap5. I especially recommend their “Club Mix”, which mixes elements of electro-trance and the original pop vibes of the song. The other remix is somewhat wafting and more into reverie.

You might have discovered the Cygnosic remix at the limited CD-version of “Dying Stars”. It’s an enjoyable remix; nothing less, nothing more.

Last, but not least we get an exclusive B-side song entitled “Femme Fatale”. The title sounds pretty sexy while the song is just a cool composition on which Technolorgy reveal their great sound treatments and multiple studio effects.

Conclusion: “Damsels In Distress” is a damn good choice for an EP title-song, but I expected a bit more from the remixes. The original song remains the best one!

Best songs: “Damsels In Distress”, “Damsels In Distress – Ginger Snap5 Club Remix”.
