Published in conjunction with David Major and A Distant Mirror, a new edition of George Orwell’s landmark novel “Nineteen Eighty-Four” (also known as “1984”) is now available in both hardcover and paperback formats.

Completed in 1948 and first published in mid-1949, “1984” was immediately recognized for its scathing satire of malignant bureaucracy and totalitarian overreach. Part cautionary warning and part pitch-black absurdist autobiography, Orwell’s gritty alarm now rings more relevant than ever.

This edition is the most comprehensive, accurate, and relevant available. It features the full, uncensored, and unabridged 1949 text, a Foreword by “1984” (the film) co-producer Al Clark, and a comprehensive, illustrated introduction by David Thrussell. The introduction situates the book within Orwell’s personal circumstances and the broader political and social framework. An afterword by Irish writer and philosopher Richard K. Moore, along with other key texts and notable additions, enrich this edition.

The artwork and design are by Richard Grant/I+T=R.

Historical Context of ‘1984’

“1984” was written in the aftermath of World War II, during a time of great political upheaval. Orwell, having witnessed the rise of totalitarian regimes in Nazi Germany and Stalinist Russia, was deeply concerned about the potential for oppressive governments to emerge in the post-war world. His novel reflects these anxieties, presenting a dystopian future where the state exerts total control over every aspect of life.

Orwell wrote “1984” while suffering from tuberculosis, which contributed to the bleak tone of the novel. His personal experiences with illness, poverty, and political disillusionment heavily influenced the narrative. Orwell’s time fighting in the Spanish Civil War and his observations of totalitarian regimes deeply informed his portrayal of the oppressive government in “1984”.

The novel explores themes of surveillance, censorship, propaganda, and the manipulation of truth—all of which remain relevant in today’s digital age. The concepts of “Big Brother,” “doublethink,” and “thoughtcrime” have entered the cultural lexicon, illustrating the enduring impact of Orwell’s work on contemporary discussions about privacy, freedom, and state power.

“1984” is not only a work of fiction but also a profound commentary on the nature of power and control. It has been widely studied and analyzed for its themes, literary style, and political implications. The novel’s stark portrayal of a dystopian future continues to resonate with readers and serves as a powerful warning against the dangers of totalitarianism.

About David Thrussell

David Thrussell is an Australian musician and composer known for his work in various electronic music genres. He is the founding member of the dark ambient and industrial bands Snog, Soma (with Pieter Bourke), and Black Lung. In his work Thrussell is often exploring themes related to conspiracy theories and esoteric subjects.

Thrussell’s career spans several decades, beginning in the late 1980s and his projects have consistently pushed the boundaries of electronic music, blending elements of industrial dance, original scores, and soundtracks. His work under the Black Lung moniker, in particular, delves into thematic explorations of conspiracies, with albums featuring titles and liner notes that reference documents and theories related to the New World Order and mind control technologies.

In addition to his musical endeavors, Thrussell has also been involved in film scores, with contributions to soundtracks such as “Wolf Creek” (2005) and “The Year of the Golf Ball” (2012). His discography includes a diverse range of releases, from experimental spoken word albums to cinematic soundscapes.

Genre/Influences: Wave-Pop, Dark-Wave.

Format: Digital, CD.

Background/Info: French musician Christophe D. has released an impressive number of works in less than ten years. “Cartésiens” features nine songs inspired and driven by the works of famous writers and poets like Arthur Rimbaud, George Orwell, Paul Elurad and Paul Verlaine.

Content: The sound and lyrical influences aren’t that different from previous works and yet it sounds different. There’s a noticeable growing maturity you can hear in most details of the production. The lyrical side of the album is touched by great poetry -featuring an adaptation from poems by the aforementioned names. This work will ravish fans of Opera Multi Steel.

+ + + : The album takes off with the great “Le Dormeur Du Val” -which is a poem by Rimbaud. Guitar and electronics together with the lyrics create a sensation of dark magic. I also like the reverie emerging at “Nos Visages De Glace” and “Chanson d’Automne” which is a poem by Paul Verlaine. The last mentioned song is characterized by a legendary extract used during WWII by the French resistance.

– – – : I’m missing a bit passion in some of the vocal parts which also is the main aspect I’m missing in the music. Globally speaking, Nice Cold Nation made a serious step forward.

Conclusion: Poetry and music as a Dark-Wave creation.

Best songs: “Le Dormeur Du Val”, “Nos Visages De Glace”, “Chanson D’automne”, “En Flammes”.

Rate: 7½.

Uwe Kanka and Dirk Krause set up ARMAGEDDON DILDOS in 1990. The German duo from Kassel became an instant successful EBM formation with a great live reputation. They got signed to the legendary Zoth Ommog label and became one of the EBM flagholders from the 90s. When Dirk Krause left the band, Uwe Kanka decided to went on. He released a few more albums on Ausfahrt and Alfa Matrix “Dystopia“ released on Alfa Matrix is the band’s new full length and also the first new one since 2011. It also is the most diversified opus in the band’s history. From EBM to Electro-Rock to Electro-Pop with an 80s touch on top, the new work sounds as the most mature and achieved one to date. Time to ask a few questions to Uwe.

(Courtesy by Inferno Sound Diaries)

Q: I realized the first ARMAGEDDON DILDOS EP’s “Never Mind/Pressure” and “East West” were released exactly 30 years ago now! What do you keep in mind from the early, successful years and how did you see the band –and yourself, evolving till today?

Uwe: Dirk Krause and I met in a joint rehearsal room in Kassel. He made Synt-Pop with his band while I was involved with harder sounding New-Wave guitar music with the formation Beat The Beat. It quickly became clear that we were on the same wavelength. We wanted to break new ground together, make harder electronic music; powerful, aggressive, sweaty. We were young and didn’t know any limits. With the record deal with Zoth Ommog and the success of the first singles, we felt confirmed walking on the right path. It was an incredibly dynamic and lively time with lots of gigs and fantastic fans.

The cut came in 2000 when Dirk left the band. We had grown apart, musically and privately. I chose to continue alone with ARMAGEDDON DILDOS. The first few years weren’t easy for me. I had to buy new equipment and get used to it. The advantage, however, was that I could implement my ideas more uncompromisingly. For me, “Dystopia” is the logical consequence of this tough and instructive time.

Q: “Dystopia” is the first new album since “Untergrund” (2011). Why did this new work took that long and did you ever consider to stop composing new songs?

Uwe: I just take the time it takes for me. It has always been like this. We also published “Herbstzeitlose“. Then there is the work on remixes. And no, I never thought of stopping composing.

Q: Let’s talk about “Dystopia”, which I personally consider as the most mature and still most diversified work since you’re composing the songs. When did you start the writing and what has been the input of Mathias Black and Sven Mouhcine?

Uwe: All songs, except for “High Up In The Sky“, were written in the last four years. I started with the compositions and texts on my own. Later on, Mathias receives the material in order to edit it musically and soundly if necessary. After that, I continued to work on it in order to produce the final versions with Mathias. We were in direct contact with each other, including Sven, during the entire process. Sven plays the keyboards and sings since 2012 and is responsible for all questions about the band’s live hardware and software, the entire sound and technical process including video recordings on stage.

Mathias and Sven are extremely competent in their work and have meanwhile become indispensable for the smooth performance of the Dildos. We also get along very well, which makes things easier.

Q: The cover of the album and its title both remind me to the legendary novel of George Orwell “1984”, but the album is a critical perception of our society and the world we’re living in, right? Does dystopia became reality!?

Uwe: The big problems of our time such as environment and climate change are no longer national problems. The effects can be felt worldwide. Poverty and famine, crisis areas such as the Syrian conflict and the resulting waves of refugees affect us all. The growing gap between rich and poor and the associated social unrest knows no boundaries. And I’m not mentioning Corona. And yes, we are on the highway to dystopia!

Q: Your daughter, Malin, is already featured on this album. What does it mean for you as father to see your daughter joining in? And what does she think about ARMAGEDDON DILDOS?

Uwe: Malin has already worked on “Morgengrauen” and “Untergrund“. So this is not a new situation for me. She is professional, has a very special voice and excellent empathy. It is always a great pleasure to work with her.

What does she think about the ‘Dildos’? Well, I don’t think it’s like she’s listening to ARMAGEDDON DILDOS at regular basis. In the end, it’s just not her music, but out of the many songs I’ve written, there’re probably a few ones she really likes.

Q: Reality today is that artists no longer can play live because of the pandemic. What do you think about this situation and what will be the impact for the further years?

Uwe: These are tough times for culture enthusiasts, artists, event organizers, club owners and all of those who’re involved with it. I have never experienced something like that. Unfortunately, the entire industry in Germany lacks government support.

I hope that soon something will happen and that we all together can get out unscathed from this situation. It is important that we find our way back to the ‚pre-Corona‘ status very quickly. Music belongs to the stage !!!

Genre/Influences: EBM.

Format: Digital, Double CD.

Background/Info: Armageddon Dildos is back on track unleashing the first ‘new’ studio album since “Untergrund” (2011). Uwe Kanka introduced the new album by the solid EP “Heut Nacht” released earlier this year. “Dystopia” wants to be a critical reflection about the dystopian world we’re living in. The front cover clearly reminds me of the legendary “1984” novel of George Orwell.

Content: The regular album features 13 songs while the bonus disc features 12 extra songs/remixes. The album takes off with a unique song for the band, but still a great and overwhelming piece of music. Armageddon Dildos next moves from harder EBM cuts –including the already known “Heut Nacht”, towards slower pieces. I also noticed some interesting experiments like the minimal driven “Night People”, which sounds a bit 80s like. The song “Neon” is also a noticeable cut featuring female vocals by Malin Kanka (Uwe’s daughter). “Stay” is already something totally different and brings a surprising guitar Electro-Rock style. The work ends with a hard “Club Mix” of the title song.

The bonus disc is featuring remixes by Schramm, Intent:Outtake, First Aid 4 Souls, Inertia, Dave Anderson, Digital Factor, Orange Sector, AD:Key, Fredrik Söderberg, Lights Of Euphoria, Rico Ferenc Piller and Synapsyche.

+ + + : “Dystopia” is a diversified album driven, by good-old EBM sequences mixed with eclectic elements. The die-hard fans will be ravished discovering songs such as “Dystopia” and “Heut Nacht”. “High Up In The Sky” stands for modernism while “Night People” is a great ode to 80s electronics. “Heut Nacht” and “Destruction” both reveal noticeable melody lines. Last, but not least “Ohne Dich” is a cool Body-Pop song sung in German while featuring female French samplings. Among the remixes I want to mention the devastating remix of “Dance Of Dead Bodies” by Lights Of Euphoria. Intent:Outtake did also a great job remixing “Dystopia”.

– – – : Some cuts are clearly unexpected, and not totally convincing. I of course refer to the already mentioned “Stay”. The early and successful days of this band are clearly a way behind us.

Conclusion: I remember to have been disappointed when discovering the “Untergrund”-album while “Dystopia” reconciles me a bit with the true spirit of the band.

Best songs: “Ohne Dich”, “Dystopia – Club Mix”, “Heut Nacht”, “Night People”, “Destruction” + “Dance On Dead Bodies – Light Of Euphoria Stadium Mix”.

Rate: (8).

Genre/Influences:
Electro-wave,
minimal-electro.

Background/Info:
Belgian
musician Eric
Vandamme aka ‘Enzo Kreft’ was mainly active during the 80s and early 90s. A few
years ago he got back into business unleashing interesting albums such as
“Wasteland”. “Control” is the new sonic brainchild of the artist revealing
twelve songs.

Content:
If
you’re already familiar with the work of this artist, you for sure will easily
recognize the minimal-electro approach, which clearly sounds inspired by
good-old 80s electronics. It’s retro-electro with a contemporary touch. The
songs are alternating between danceable minimalism and experimental-atmospheric
cuts, which have something cinematographic like. The vocals are somewhat half-spoken like
creating a sterile effect fitting with the music.

+
+ + : Enzo Kreft is an artist definitely deserving a wider audience! His music
brings good-old magic back to life, but is never a copy. The minimal sound
treatments mixed with dry snare drums and great synth lines are pretty
old-school and yet refreshing. Enzo Kreft is an artist with a proper sound
resulting in a few great cuts such as the already familiar “Disobedient”,
“Biometrics” featuring robotic vocals passages, “Scanned” and the darker
“Connected” and “In My Head”. Next to the cool songs, “Control” is also dealing
with an intelligent and clearly dystopian vision about mankind. Last, but not
least, I also want to say a word about the sober, but cool digipak.

–
– – : I personally would have preferred to get a few more ‘danceable’ cuts
instead of the atmospheric ones.

Conclusion:
There’s
a reference to George Orwell in the album and the only thing I can say is that
“1984” was fiction (or prophecy), but “Control” is reality! It’s an intelligent
work in the writing and the thematic.

Best
songs: “Disobedient”, “Biometrics”, “Scanned”, “In My Head”, “Connected”.

Rate:
(8).

No Other Gods have a brand new track “2 Minutes Hate” which is out now, you can check it below. The concept for the song comes from George Orwell’s 1984 “The Two Minutes Hate”, a daily period in which Party members of the society of Oceania must watch a film depicting the Party’s enemies and express their hatred for them for exactly two minutes.

https://soundcloud.com/noothergods/no-other-gods-2-minutes-hate-1/s-eWPCi

The horrible thing about the Two Minutes Hate was not that one was obliged to act a part, but that it was impossible to avoid joining in. Within thirty seconds any pretence was always unnecessary.

The track has been released via Zero Sum Records.

No Other Gods is the creation of Joe Crudgington who is musically influenced by bands like NIN, Marilyn Manson, Skinny Puppy, and electronic drum and bass artists such as Noisia and Current Value.

Background/Info: Crisis Actor is the meeting between David Thrussell (Snog, Black Lung…) and Tony D’Oporto (mainly known from Gnome and Gnomes of Kush). Both musicians previously released 2 digital EP’s and now unleash their debut album featuring 10 tracks on Ant-Zen. Crisis Actor introduces their work as ‘a conspiracy of two dedicated to bringing the hard truth to the people through the vehicle of art and music.’ It all seems as the shadow of George Orwell is hanging over this work.

Content: From the very first notes “Slave New World” reveals a minimal-electronic approach carried by EBM-orientated bass lines, technoid elements, space-like atmospheres and a Kraftwerk-flavor hanging over a few cuts. It’s a modern approach of electronic music revealing the sound intelligence of both artists. I don’t want to compare Crisis Actor to Snog, but there clearly is a link in the way the songs have been worked out. The spooky vocal parts perfectly fit the sound.

+ + + : Crisis Actor took me by surprise by a refreshing composition. This is neither a new EBM emulation nor a cheap techno production. “Slave New World” (I like the title) reveals a simple, but efficient sound formula, which has been accomplished with knowledge and a truly passion for electronic music. It in a way is an answer to all bands without a real spirit sounding similar to each other. From technoid beats and arrangements to dark atmospheres carried by effects and sweeps to solid bass lines to subtle bleeps to the unavoidable spooky vocals of David Thrussell, this album is a real accomplishment. It resulted in several noticeable cuts.

– – – : Those who already discovered previous productions (cf. “Superstar” and “Electronic Eye”) will have to rediscover these songs. You don’t hear me complaining!

Conclusion: Crisis Actor stands for an intelligent, efficient and refreshing music production with a sharp and critical perception of our society and the world we’re living in.

Best songs: “Superstar”, “The New Dark Age”, “Atmosphere”, “Electronic Eye”, “Death By Selfie Stick”.

Rate: (8½).

Out on December 12th via Zero Sum Records (Believe digital) is the new single “Prosthetic Minds” by the industrial act Hate Vessel. You can now exclusively preview the track on Side-Line weeks before the official release.

Hate Vessel is the creation of Joe Crudgington, who began writing alone in 2013 after becoming disillusioned with traditional band set-ups and the inability to convey the sounds he wanted within them. Whilst rehearsing for early solo renditions of Hate Vessel, he was approached by Paul Traveller, who liked the sound and feel of the music and expressed a wish to play drums within the band. They were soon joined by Nik Butcher (bass/electronics) who found the band online, and most recently by guitarist Richie Symons who will add their live set up.

Joe is musically influenced by bands like NIN, Marilyn Manson, Skinny Puppy, and electronic drum and bass artists such as Noisia and Current Value. He is also drawn to unsettling, abrasive sounds, imagery and score from horror motion pictures; and the works of prolific authors like George Orwell, Hunter S Thompson, and William S. Burroughs.

You can now listen to “Prosthetic Minds” below, enjoy!

Outside the news filter bubble, I’m all in for quality sushi and helping raise funds for Ukraine’s ongoing fight against the modern-day axis of evil. After 35 years of commitment Dirk Da Davo and TB Frank decided to leave their sonic brainchild to the collective memory of their numerous fans and electro lovers. They can look back at an impressive career and multiple hits. Enough reasons after the ‘TNJ Farewell Tour – Time Capsule Concerts’ for a ‘farewell interview’.

Part 2 can be read here.

SL: The Neon Judgement got a symbolic funeral during the very last live show at the ‘AB’ in Brussels on September, the 26th. What did you feel during the show?

Dirk Da Davo: The AB is the ultimate place to do this. We were comfortable on stage, we’ve enjoyed it very much!

SL: Where’s The Neon Judgement now: in heaven or in hell?

Dirk Da Davo: TNJ is in between both…

SL: If you’ve to choose an epitaph for The Neon Judgement, what should we read on it?

Dirkl Da Davo: They played LOUD MUSIC!

SL: Does the famous quote ‘death is only the beginning’ make sense to you and if yes what do you expect?

Dirk Da Davo: That the beginning is always very near.

SL: Robbespierre is probably not a ‘pacific’ reference, but he made this remarkable quote ‘death is the beginning of immortality’! Do you think The Neon Judgement will be immortal and how would you like to be reminded as band and musician?

Dirk Da Davo: Let’s hope that the message stays immortal. Hard to tell how I would like to be reminded as a musician because I still am a musician…

SL: I guess you prefer a quote by George Orwell; I’ve found this one: ‘each generation imagines itself to be more intelligent than the one that went before it, and wiser than the one that comes after it’. What do you think?

Dirk Da Davo: The quote means ‘the end at the end’. It seems that society evolves like this :(( War is peace, freedom is slavery, ignorance is strength!

SL: THE George Orwell quote remains for sure ‘Big brother is watching you’! How the hell could he know one day it simply would become reality?

Dirk Da Davo: Maybe he listened to “TV Treated” first ? :))(

SL: A few other writers, which I think might have caught your interest are Anthony Burgess for “Clockwork Orange” and Aldous Huxley for “Brave New World”. Or do you have other references?

Dirk Da Davo: Haldous Huxley’s “Brave New World” was in my package! Recently I was reading Dave Eggers “The Circle” , a brilliant ‘Orwelian’ book.

SL: Now that The Neon Judgement is death and buried, you’ll maybe get the opportunity to meet George Orwell in afterlife! What would you like to ask him?

Dirk Da Davo: Hi Georges, can I offer you a drink?

SL: Who are the other personalities you would like to meet in hell or in heaven?

Dirk Da Davo: Bella Lugosi.
