Frankie Rose released the video for “Return To Dust” on 21 August 2026, the second single from her album “Hila”, which arrives on 18 September 2026 through Born Losers Records outside the EU and UK and through Night School Records in the EU and UK. The Brooklyn songwriter directed the clip herself.

“Return To Dust” sets Rose’s vocal high in the mix against drum machines, synthesizers and reverbed guitar, with the low end carrying most of the weight. Rose explains the song as a description of searching for the dead while asleep, and of failing at it.

“In my dreams I travel the cosmos and the astral realm looking for ones I’ve lost,” she stated. “But I’m a pretty bad receiver, and I am pretty sure I keep missing what they’re trying to tell me.”

The video follows that idea literally. Rose floats through star fields and planetary vistas in a homemade montage, drifting rather than exploring, and the cosmic scenery stays low-budget rather than cinematic.

Frankie Rose sets ‘Hila’ for 18 September

Rose announced “Hila” on 23 June 2026 alongside the first single, “Cant Be Wrong”. She describes the album as built around bereavement and the way it distorts perception.

“Hila. A record about loss,” she stated. “What persists beyond the range of ordinary perception? The place mourning keeps returning to – not quite transcendence, not quite doubt. The edge of what we can see.”

Rose produced the record herself at her home studio, with Justin Welch of Elastica and Lush on drums. She recorded it after touring with The Jesus and Mary Chain and Swervedriver. Night School Records describes the album as drawing on the darkness of later Coil, the production weight of Skinny Puppy and the vocal treatments associated with Cocteau Twins, with Robin Guthrie style guitar work on “Shadow Twin”. Saxophone and digital synthesis run through “Rainman” and the title track.

“Hila” runs ten tracks: “Olo”, “Cant Be Wrong”, “Return To Dust”, “Shadow Twin”, “Rainman”, “Hila”, “Manifest”, “Best Of Times”, “TV Star” and “Velvet Refrain”. Born Losers Records issues it on black vinyl, on clear vinyl with a green centre, on CD and digitally, with a vinyl and T-shirt bundle also listed. Night School Records handles the EU and UK editions.

About Frankie Rose

Frankie Rose was born on 18 January 1979 and works out of Brooklyn, New York. She was an original member of Vivian Girls and played drums in Crystal Stilts and in Dum Dum Girls before moving to her own material.

Her first single, “Thee Only One”, appeared on Slumberland Records in 2009 under the name Frankie Rose and the Outs, and the band’s self-titled debut album followed on the same label in 2010. She dropped the group name for “Interstellar”, issued by Slumberland in February 2012, and released the “Night Swim” EP and the single “Know Me” the same year. Fat Possum Records put out “Herein Wild” in 2013. In 2014 she recorded “Careers” for Kanine Records as one half of Beverly.

“Cage Tropical” arrived on Slumberland in August 2017, the year Rose also released a cover of The Cure song “A Forest”. She extended that work in 2019 with “Seventeen Seconds”, a track-for-track cover of The Cure’s 1980 album, again on Slumberland. Her previous album, “Love As Projection”, came out on Slumberland in March 2023, after which she toured with The Jesus and Mary Chain and Swervedriver.

“Hila” is her first record for Born Losers Records and Night School Records, and moves her writing toward synthesizer arrangements and eighties production methods. “Return To Dust” is the second track released from it.
