Decommissioned Forests have released a new single and video (which we present you exclusively) for “Bread to the Ducks”. “Bread to the Ducks” is taken from their third album “Chemistry” (2023). This release also contains a live version of “Eel Tank” and the tracks “Insert Your Name” and “Smash”.

The single is the second in a series of pieces about a massive alien art gallery travelling through space. Filled with exhibits often featuring live captured specimens that attempt to capture something of the social aspects of the various civilisations and cultures that they have visited so far.

The single is also available via Bandcamp.

Talking about this alien art gallery, Rael explains, “I had this flash fiction piece called, Eel Tank about a man trapped in a tank full of eels, blindfolded, with breathing apparatus strapped to his face and no idea of how long he’d been there. And it kind of grew into it being an alien art exhibit featuring a captured and imprisoned human, trying to capture something of what it is to be a human on planet earth. After doing more spoken word lyrics and poems on our previous releases, Daniel suggested I try some prose, so we made Eel Tank, which is also on the album Chemistry (2023). It’s great to perform live because I get to shout and throw myself around the stage. Daniel and Howard thought it worked well and asked if I had any more, and I said, ‘Well I have got a whole series of these, the next one is Bread to the Ducks but it’s a bit out there…”

The Howard Gardner video for Bread to the Ducks explores the narrative of the words. He explains, “Normally when I’m working on a music video concept, I try to avoid too much of a literal interpretation of the lyrics. In this instance though, Max had a very definite concept in mind and a literal interpretation seemed to be the only viable route. I love science fiction and the overall dark tone of the piece; it seemed like an opportunity to lean into the absurdist nature of the words and really have some fun with it. This has to be one of the oddest things I’ve animated. But it was a great experience! As a child I was always fascinated by crappy looking old museum dioramas. This seemed the natural aesthetic way to go with the story we we’re telling. Their revolutionary AI programming led them to discard bone and muscle and purely focus on offal. That is, the organs. They’d peck through to get to the sex organs, kidneys, liver, pancreas, brain and even lung.”

When pressed on what it’s about, Rael responded, “There’s definitely an influence from the book, ‘Under the Skin’ by Michael Faber… This track is about a lot of things: scarcity economics, capitalism, and animal factory farming. I’d like to point out that this alien art gallery is not set in some ficticious dystopian future. This is all happening right now.”

About Decommissioned Forests

The London based experimental electronic trio, consisting of multimedia artist Howard Gardner, instrumentalist and producer Daniel Vincent, and vocalist Max Rael, have been creating music together as Decommissioned Forests since 2017.

Taking a broad range of influences by outsider artists such as Coil, Current 93, Cluster, Nine Inch Nails, Nurse With Wound and Throbbing Gristle, the band creates sound worlds with an array of analog, digital, and virtual, synthesizers and sampled acoustic and classical instruments which serve as a backdrop to Rael’s lyrics.

(Photos by Chris Carter) Out on Conspiracy International on 16 September 2022 is Cosey Fanni Tutti’s newest album “Delia Derbyshire: The Myths and the Legendary Tapes”, her original soundtrack recordings for Caroline Catz’ film about Derbyshire. The release will be available on ultra clear vinyl, CD and digitally on 16 September 2022 via the artist’s own label, Conspiracy International.

The music was composed, performed and produced by Cosey Fanni Tutti in Twickenham Studio 3, London and Studio 47 in Norfork, with vocals by Cosey Fanni Tutti and Caroline Catz, alongside the voice of Delia Derbyshire.

About the soundtrack

In 2018, Cosey Fanni Tutti was commissioned to write the soundtrack to director and actor Caroline Catz’s intimate portrayal of the composer, musician and sonic experimentalist, Delia Derbyshire (1937-2001). Best known for her ground-breaking work on the 1963 “Doctor Who” theme tune, Derbyshire was instrumental in giving easy access to and rewiring a nation’s attitudes towards electronic music.

Cosey Fanni Tutti: “Working within the often-stifling confines of the BBC Radiophonic Workshop, her experimentalism – which saw her manipulating magnetic tape, found sounds and electronics – is only now being given full credit for the immeasurable impact it has had on the way we hear the world.”

As for the compositions Cosey Fanni Tutti explains: “The compositions are inspired by my research of the Delia Derbyshire audio archive, Delia’s original compositional notes and techniques which in combination with my admiration and love of Delia’s work provided a way to integrate her style and approach to music with my own. An alliance of our sensibilities.”

The new album follows the release of Cosey Fanni Tutti’s new book, “RE-SISTERS: The Lives and Recordings of Delia Derbyshire, Margery Kempe and Cosey Fanni Tutti” – due to be published on Faber on 18 August.

Out on 18 August via Faber is “Re-sisters”, a book written by Cosey Fanni Tutti about the lives and recordings of Delia Derbyshire, Margery Kempe and Cosey Fanni Tutti herself.

In 2018, Cosey Fanni Tutti received a commission to write the soundtrack to a film about Delia Derbyshire, the pioneering electronic composer.

While researching Derbyshire’s life, Tutti became immersed in her story and uncovered parallels with her own life. At the same time, Tutti began reading about Margery Kempe, the fifteenth-century mystic visionary who wrote the first English-language autobiography.

The connections between the three women resulted in “Re-sisters”.

Cosey will be appearing live in-conversation about “Re-Sisters” throughout the year. The first dates announced are:

• Thursday 25 August – Glasgow, Monorail (In association with Optimo)

Released last year was the double LP “Things I was due to forget” by the synthwave, minimal project M.BRyo + D.M.T.. M.BRyo + D.M.T. is actually the project by Mark Burghgraeve, one of the founding members of Spierrelaxans which would soon be renamed as Klinik. He formed M.BRyo + D.M.T. together with a few fellow art school students at the end of the seventies.

The album gathers songs that appeared on cassette and vinyl or came from Burghgraeve’s personal archive of unreleased tapes. The material was recorded between 1979 and 2005 except for the tracks “Show Me Your Hands” and “Relax” and has now been released via the Lille based label Nuit et Brouillard. Note that the track “Show Me Your Hands” is actually a collaboration with Jan Fabre for the installation “Homo Faber”.

Faber & Faber have announced the publication (later on in April) of 2 books, “All Gates Open” and “Can Kiosk”. The 2 books are being described as the ‘definitive story of the most influential and revered avant-garde band of the late twentieth century’. It consists of two books and previously unseen art and photos.

In book one, “All Gates Open”, Rob Young gives the full biography of the band that emerged at the vanguard of the Krautrock scene in late sixties Cologne. Rob Young’s account draws on interviews with all the founding members of Can, their vocalists, friends and music industry associates.

Book two, “Can Kiosk”, has been assembled by Irmin Schmidt, founding member and guiding spirit of the band, as a “collage” – a technique long associated with Can’s approach to recording. There is an oral history of the band, collated by former Electronic Beats and Spex editor Max Dax, and Robert Defcon, drawing on interviews Irmin conducted with musicians who see Can as an influence. These musicians include the likes of Bobby Gillespie, Geoff Barrow, Mark E. Smith, Daniel Miller and many others, but also with artists and film-makers like Wim Wenders and John Malkovich, where Irmin reflects on more personal matters and his work with film.

Extracts from Irmin’s notebooks and diaries from 2013–14 are also reproduced as a reflection on the creative process, and the memories, dreams and epiphanies it entails. Can Kiosk offers further perspectives on a band that has inspired several generations of musicians and film-makers.

Out on June 16, 2017 on triple vinyl, download, CD and streaming services is “The Singles”, a brand new collection of all of CAN’s single releases. This is the first time CAN’s singles will be presented together.

You can listen to the rare 1971 7″ single release “Turtles Have Short Legs” right below. This was the band’s third single, never appeared on a studio album and was recorded around the time of the “Tago Mago” sessions with the line up of Holger Czukay, Michael Karoli, Jaki Liebezeit, Irmin Schmidt and Damo Suzuki.

In related news, on Saturday April 8th Irmin Schmidt will conduct the London Symphony Orchestra at the Barbican in London marking CAN’s 50th anniversary year. He will be presenting the world premiere of an original orchestral work composed by Schmidt and Gregor Schwellenbach, “CAN Dialog”, which will include quotations of some of the band’s most well-known pieces. In addition Irmin Schmidt will also conduct the world premiere of the concert version of “La Fermosa, Ballett-Suite” by Irmin Schmidt. The second half of the show provides an entirely different experience of CAN material, as realized by The CAN Project, a specially curated supergroup brought together by Sonic Youth’s Thurston Moore featuring CAN’s first singer Malcolm Mooney, Steve Shelley, Deb Googe, James Sedwards, Pat Thomas, Valentina Magaletti and Tom Relleen.

And the CAN festivities will continue in 2018 as in Spring 2018, Faber & Faber are publishing a new book devoted to CAN, “All Gates Open”. The special edition will come in two volumes: one will be the first complete, authorized biography of the band written by Rob Young and the second, “CAN Kiosk” by Irmin Schmidt, is a collage of thoughts, visuals and interviews.
