The Cure frontman Robert Smith is about to release an hour worth of noise as a solo album.

The news was revealed in a new interview with Apple Music 1’s Zane Lowe where Smith said the following: “I’ve always wanted to do an hour’s worth of noise, and I didn’t want it to be The Cure. You wait ten years and then we bring out an album that’s just noise. So it was just like, ‘No’ – that was me doing the rest of the band. That ‘no’ was a band no. So I’ve been just having fun with that really.”

Smith was featured alongside Chvrches with whom he teamed up to release the single “How Not To Drown”, ahead of the band’s new album “Screen Violence”. ”

Regarding the 2 new The Cure albums which were announced a while ago already, Smith confirmed that these two albums will be released with one being notably darker than the other. More details should be revealed in the upcoming weeks. At the moment the band is completing the recordings. The band still has to decide what mixer they’ll be using.

In further news, Smith also teamed up with Gorillaz for the track “Strange Timez” and with Deftones for a remix of their song “Teenager”.

Below is the track “How Not To Drown” he recorded with Chvrches.

Industrial/gothic metal act FEBRVVM has released a cover version of The Cure’s “The Walk” this time after covering the Deftones’ classic track “Be Quiet and Drive (Far Away)” in 2019. FEBRVVM’s take includes heavy guitars and a heavy rendition of the track’s iconic synth line.

Here’s what the band says about their cover: “It is one of the less typical The Cure’s songs (it is essentially a dance track) and the cover version features a slightly unorthodox approach that tries to maintain the sublime insanity of the original (song’s lyrics basically deals with the patients in the mental health hospital).”

The single is available on pretty much every streaming platform, you can check the video below.

FEBRVVM has released three EPs so far (the latest is “Praemeditatio Malorvm” from 2020) and a debut LP is expected next month.

Genre/Influences: Industrial, metal.

Format: Digital.

Background/Info: Escape To What was set up in 2017 by James Orez and Jan O. They claim to mix industrial- and metal music, being inspired by bands such as NIN, Deftones, Fear Factory, 3Teeth, Skinny Puppy ao. Among the six songs you’ll discover three cuts that will be featured on the band’s upcoming album.

Content: This EP (which rather looks as a mini-album) takes off with the unpolished and brutal “The Vacant Ones”. The guitar playing is harsh and industrial like, which creates a great match with the vocals. This opener also is the heaviest cut of the work, Escape To What also composing some ‘softer’ songs, which feel a bit like intermezzos. The last song is composed with some piano play creating rather evasive moments while evolving towards harder passages with whispering vocals.

+ + + : I like the debut song –which will be featured at the band’s upcoming album, for its unpolished production and merciless format. The next song coming up (cf. “Pandemonia (Can You Feel Me)” is somewhat different, but I here again like the guitar playing for its mewing sound. “When The Still Move”, which is the last song, reveals an interesting duality between a dreamy and a harder part.

– – – : The songs are pretty short and sometimes feel like being unachieved; like a kind of demo for a next and hopefully more elaborated work.

Conclusion: I can’t say to have been seriously impressed by this work, but I’m convinced there’s more potential hiding in this band than what came out on this EP.

Best songs: “The Vacant Ones”, “When The Still Move”.

Rate: (6).

The inventors of Death pop, Industrial pop and Dark pop from Los Angeles are back with a new single called ‘Impulse Control’ that can be ordered here. The new videoclip was shot by singer/musician Rizz and Jesse Draxler (Nine Inch Nails, Chelsea Wolfe, the Black Queen) in Little Tokyo just before the corona-crisis broke out.

Dark, doomy, dreamy, cinematic and mysterious is the style of VOWWS. Those elements can be seen again in the new clip. The band states: “It’s a unique time for humanity, the machine has stopped and we’re all in solitary having to deal with ourselves. There’s a lot of anxiety that we can’t really run from. Like everyone else, we’re processing a huge shock and experiencing things we’ve never dealt with before. We’re grateful to have an outlet for some of the angst, it feels like the best way we can work through something this intense is to capture the feeling. A lot of the song came out of nowhere, straight from the void probably.”

VOWWS earlier collaborated with Deftones singer Chino Moreno, New Wave icon Gary Numan, Danny Lohner (Renhölder) of Nine Inch Nails/Marilyn Manson and toured with The Cult in the US. Their first album ‘The Great Sun’ was co-produced by Kevin McMahon (Swans). Last year the band performed in Paris, London and Tokyo on fashion events and recently Rizz and Matt toured the US and Europe as support for Poppy.
