Out of print for a decade, the fine British record label Cold Spring has now reissued the cult release “Recoiled” featuring Coil Remixes of Nine Inch Nails tracks. This much-demanded new vinyl edition of this legendary collaboration comes in black or coloured vinyl in full-colour sleeve with printed inner sleeve.

Note that the ‘Pallid Amber’ version which is limited to only 100 copies was only available via Cold Spring and this as a strictly one copy for customer only. If you attempt to buy more than one copy, your entire order will be cancelled. This way the label wants to avoid scalpers are getting their hands on this release.

Both the ‘Heavy Gold’ and ‘Solid Bone White’ come in a limited edition of 500 copies. Also available is a black vinyl (with T-shirt of wanted) and a CD in full colour digipak.

Genesis of Coil / Nine Inch Nails LP “Recoiled”

The Nine Inch Nails tracks on “Recoiled” were remixed by Danny Hyde (Coil, Electric Sewer Age) and Peter Christopherson (Coil, Throbbing Gristle) on the demand of long time Coil admirer Trent Reznor. Reznor sent over the original multi-tracks and DATs to Hyde and Christopherson, who independently mixed versions and then met to synch both creations.

It was first released in the 5-track format on February 24, 2014, via Cold Spring posthumously after the deaths of the two original Coil members, Peter Christopherson and John Balance. “Recoiled” is actually based on the fan-created digital EP, “Uncoiled”, initially released freely on The Pirate Bay as fully tagged MP3s and FLAC files of the remixes, including original photography and printable jewel case inserts.

The “Recoiled” EP contains remixes of four Nine Inch Nails songs, including “Gave Up”, from Broken (1992), and “Closer”, “The Downward Spiral” and “Eraser”, from The Downward Spiral (1994). The Cold Spring release of the album features additional mastering, and a remix of the song “Eraser” that was not on “Uncoiled”.

These 5 lengthy compositions (just under 40 minutes) are pre-Ableton / laptop generation type creations, with the use of baby alarms and numerous wires to create the effects.

Coil’s final album ‘The New Backwards’ re-released with 8 additional tracks as an extended 3LP/2CD edition

Out in april 2022 is the Coil album “The New Backwards”. Originally meant as the follow-up to “Love’s Secret Domain”, this album effectively became the final official Coil studio release of all new material whilst Peter “Sleazy” Christopherson was still alive. This 3LP/2CD version contains 8 additional tracks of previously unheard material from the same sessions.

“The New Backwards” was conceived by Peter “Sleazy” Christopherson in 2007, revisiting stray tracks which hadn’t seemed to gel with the material he had chosen for the more somber “Ape of Naples” from 2005, Coil’s initial posthumous release, and a sort of requiem and a kiss-goodbye to his then recently deceased partner John Balance.

The material was partially recorded in 1996 in Sharon Tate’s former home in the Hollywood Hills, the Nine Inch Nails home base in New Orleans and London’s Swanyard. The material was then remixed and restructured with the help of long-term friend Danny Hyde in Thailand. Some of the tracks present on the album were performed live in the past, others had only leaked in demo versions and are here presented updated and polished as Christopherson and Hyde intended them to be heard including Balance’s vocal contributions. About Coil

Coil were an experimental music group, founded in 1982 in London, England and concluded in 2005. Initially envisioned as a solo project by musician John Balance (of the band Psychic TV), Coil evolved into a full-time project with the addition of his partner Peter Christopherson (formerly of pioneering industrial music group Throbbing Gristle).

Balance and Christopherson were the only constant members; other contributors throughout the band’s career included Stephen Thrower, Danny Hyde, Drew McDowall, William Breeze, Thighpaulsandra, and Ossian Brown.

In 1985, the group began working on a series of soundtracks, among them the rejected score for the first “Hellraiser”.

Financial difficulties slowed the group’s work in the early 1990s before they returned to the project on releases such as “Astral Disaster” (1999), and the “Musick to Play in the Dark” series composed of “Vol. 1” (1999) and “Vol. 2” (2000), as well as releasing several projects under aliases such as Black Light District, ELpH, and Time Machines.

The group started several smaller independent record labels, including Eskaton and Chalice. The group’s first live performance in 16 years occurred in 1999, and began a series of mini-tours that would last until 2004.

Following the accidental death of John Balance on 13 November 2004, Christopherson announced via that Coil as an entity had ceased to exist, ending the Coil discography with “The Ape of Naples” (2005).

Coil’s 1992 album ‘Stolen & Contaminated Songs’ gets reissue on CD + two vinyl editions

Cold Spring has announced the reissue of Coil’s 1992 album “Stolen & Contaminated Songs”, presented on CD and, for the first time, on vinyl. “Stolen & Contaminated Songs” was recorded and produced by Coil in 1992 and Swas the first of two albums recorded and produced by the band in that year. The album is composed of outtakes and unreleased songs from their prior album, “Love’s Secret Domain”.

The line-up in 1992 consisted of John Balance, Peter Christopherson, Stephen Thrower and Danny Hyde. The release will be reissued on CD (available here) but also on vinyl including a limited bone coloured 2LP (limited to 800 copies – you can buy it here) and a regular black double vinyl.

Coil, a short history

Initially envisioned as a solo project by singer and songwriter John Balance (born Geoffrey Burton) while he was in the band Psychic TV, Coil evolved into a full-time project with the addition of artistic creative partner Peter Christopherson, a founding member of Industrial Records and pioneering Industrial music group Throbbing Gristle, who also became Balance’s life-partner. Throughout the group’s existence, Balance and Christopherson were the only constant members; other members and contributors included Stephen Thrower, Danny Hyde, Drew McDowall, William Breeze, Thighpaulsandra (Tim Lewis), and Ossian Brown (Simon Norris).

After the release of their 1984 debut EP “How to Destroy Angels”, Coil joined Some Bizzare Records, through which they released two full-length albums, “Scatology” (1984) and “Horse Rotorvator” (1986). After departing from Some Bizzare, Coil had established their own record label, Threshold House, through which they produced and released “Love’s Secret Domain” (1991), which saw the duo incorporate the influence of the UK acid house scene. Financial difficulties slowed the group’s work in the early 1990s before they returned to the project as well as releasing several projects under aliases.

Following the death of John Balance on 13 November 2004, Christopherson announced via their official record label website Threshold House that Coil as an entity had ceased to exist, and after working on the record’s content to his extent officially ended the Coil discography with “The Ape of Naples” (2005). Another Coil release with previously unreleased material hits the shops: ‘Swanyard’ – available on vinyl and CD

After the 3LP/2CD release “Swanyard” (featuring nearly 150 minutes of previously unreleased Coil recordings and available here), we have another Coil release coming up. “The Gay Man’s Guide To Safer Sex” features more previously unreleased material, namely Coil’s unreleased soundtrack for the VHS only, pre-internet, sexual education documentary entitled “The Gay Man’s Guide To Safer Sex” released in 1992.

The line-up for this project consisted of John Balance, Peter “Sleazy” Christopherson and Danny Hyde and was what John Balance called a “slightly new agey, progressive house type thing”. The material is not far removed from Badalamenti’s work with David Lynch, somewhat of an ambient house album for your home listening and early morning sunrise dances, Coil style.

The material featured on this CD/vinyl (available here for ordering) was taken from the original masters provided by Danny Hyde. “The Gay Man’s Guide To Safer Sex” features a new sexy edit of the main theme with the bonuses “Nasa-Arab” and “Omlagus Garfungiloops” taken from the 1992 CD only “Stolen And Contaminated Songs”, both being original versions of the radically reworked “Nasa-Arab 2” and “Exploding Frogs” of the OST in order to balance the whole album and extend the listening pleasure.

150 minutes of previously unreleased Coil recordings on ‘Swanyard’ 3LP vinyl and 2CD set

Coil fans, attention, you will not want to miss out on this one! Out in a few weeks (closer to June) but already available for pre-order via Bandcamp, is the “Swanyard” 3LP Vinyl (available here) and 2CD set (available here).

This new release holds – hold tight – nearly 150 (!!) minutes of previously unreleased Coil recordings. The material was all written and recorded between 1993 to 1996 and was selected and assembled by Danny Hyde (Electric Sewer Age, ex-Coil, ex-Psychic TV, ex-Black Light District) from the studio archives.

The artwork for the release was delivered by Steven Stapleton, from a recalled dream by Jhon Balance. The mastering was executed by Martin Bowes (Attrition) in a Cage Studio.

Classic Coil aka Black Light District album gets reissue with bonus track

In 1996 the album “A Thousand Lights In A Darkened Room” was released by the band Black Light District which was basically a production by Coil. The alias was one of a few assumed by them in the mid-nineties for putting out drone based music (and also a name of a song by Boyd Rice on the compilation cassette “Bethel”).

This album now gets released as being a Coil release with the title “Black Light District” and with an unreleased bonus-track. The team who worked on the material consisted of John Balance, Peter Christopherson, Drew McDowall and Danny Hyde.

The material on this reissue was remastered by Martin Bowes (Attrition) with the bonus track being taken from the “Black Light District” recording session. Also added are Danny Hyde’s comments in the booklet.

Coil fans, attention! The sold-out Electric Sewer Age EP ‘Moon’s Milk in Final Phase’ is available again on vinyl and CD

Electric Sewer Age was formed in 2006 by John Deek of Divine Frequency. The project itself featured the involvement of former Coil legends Peter “Sleazy” Christopherson and Danny Hyde, and posthumous contributions of Jhonn Balance. Following the unexpected passing in 2010 of Christopherson, the first Electric Sewer Age EP became an epitaph to the loss of this musician. The EP held the last tracks Christopherson and his decades long collaborator and friend Danny Hyde ever completed together.

The music, originally intended to conclude Coil’s “Moon’s Milk” series, was released on CD by Divine Frequency in 2012, and then on vinyl the next year by Danny Hyde. Both editions sold out quickly and have been unavailable until now. “Moon’s Milk In Final Phase”, consisting of four ambient-electronic instrumentals, is now being reissued on CD and on a deluxe gatefold 12 inch (in two colors — 250 copies on moon green and 250 on celestial black vinyl).

Coil – Backwards (CD Album – Cold Spring)

Genre/Influences: Experimental, industrial. Content: Every single music genre has its heroes; the kind of legendary bands, which entered into the collective memory of numerous fans and music lovers. Coil definitely belongs to that category of genius bands. They’ll be always associated to the visionary sound of Peter ‘Sleazy’ Christopherson and singer John Balance. In addition, many musicians and guests also contributed to Coil’s work over the years until the tragic loss of Balance (2004). Christopherson decided to stop Coil without his long-time partner, but ‘new’ Coil releases are still seeing the daylight. “Backwards” is a particular work, which was originally conceived during the 80s and recorded in the US at the studio of Trent Reznor (NIN). The songs were never released until the album “The New Backwards” (2008). Danny Hyde who was involved in the writing of the songs preserved the original compositions, which you’ll get here plus both original versions of favorite Coil songs “A Cold Cell” and “Fire Of The Mind”. “Backwards” will bring us back to the enigmatic and sometimes controversial sound universe of Coil. This was a band we couldn’t completely label as any particular genre. Coil for sure deals with elements of industrial and experimental music, but it often sound like a sonic exorcism of some crazy musical ideas composed with brilliance and into avant-gardism. Coil belonged to that restricted number of visionary artists who dared to walk on unexplored paths. “Backwards” features several ‘typical’ Coil songs, mixing pure sound experimentalism and danceable industrial-like parts. The title song remains one of the best cuts in the genre. It’s a crazy and yet intelligent piece of music revealing a danceable cadence and the vocals of John Balance dealing with weird and somewhat provocative themes. His typical timbre of voice mixes sensuality and mystery. Another main song is “Heaven’s Blade”, which is driven by a shamanic rhythm and reveals an interesting twist between electronic bleeps and a kind of classical/traditional instruments playing a kind of Eastern-like music. Conclusion: This work is into the usual minimalism of Coil and the great charisma of John Balance’s vocals. Best songs: “Backwards”, “Heaven’s Blade”, “Be Careful What You Wish For”, “AYOR – It’s In My Blood”. Rate: (DP:8)DP.
