Genre/Influences: Electronic, Dark-Pop, Industrial.

Format: Digital, CD.

Background/Info: One year after the last album (cf. “R.O.T.T. (inmyskin)” Lynette Cerezo strikes back with a new opus of her Bestial Mouths sonic project. This work features seventeen remixes.

Content: Because of the remixes this album is diversified and brings multiple influences together. It sounds definitely Electronic but still evasive, Dark-Pop driven and with an extra, Industrial and bombastic touch on top. Some parts are even evolving towards a transcendental journey. Sometimes danceable and later on dreamy the album is filled with surprises. Remixes have been accomplished by Broken English Club, Actors, Rebeka Warrior, Curses, XTR Human, Modern Men, IV Horsemen, Crune, Carrelle, Daniel Myer, Trace Amount, Gencab, Maduro, Orphx, Snowbeats, Lana Del rabies and Bedless Bones.

+ + + : I always have reservations about albums filled with remixes. This work however comes as a cool addendum to the last year released album “R.O.T.T. (inmyskin). I like the mysticism running through the excellent opening piece “Vast Murmur” remixed by Broken English Club, the uplifting effect emerging from “Slitskin” remixed by XTR Human and the remix of “Hex” by Snowbeasts. Diversity is the main strength of this work.

– – – : Seventeen remixes is quite a lot when there are a few uninspired pieces included. I expected a bit more from Daniel Myer and Bedless Bones to mention a few.

Conclusion: Not bad at all but I prefer the original work of Bestial Mouths instead of remixes by other artists.

Best songs: “Hex – Snowbeasts Remix”,“Vast Murmur – Broken English Club Remix”, “Slitskin – XTR Human Remix”, “Slitskin – Orphx Remix”, “Only dEad Fish – IV Horsemen Remix”.

Rate: 7.

Out now is the video for “Pleromantic” from the Estonian outdustrial band Forgotten Sunrise. The track is taken from their latest album “elu” released last year in August and is also the opening song of the album.

Hailing from Estonia, Forgotten Sunrise formed in 1992. The band has over the years experimented with many different genres from dark electro to trip-hop and shoegaze to death metal throughout their 32 year career, and stylistically identify themselves as outsider industrial – or ‘outdustrial’. Released on the label Ohm Resistance, “elu” is the group’s first full-length in ten years and starts off their upcoming trilogy “Hallelujah!” in the middle. Forgotten Sunrise today are Anders Melts (the only constant member), Kadri Sammel (also known under the moniker Bedless Bones) and Jaan “Suva” Pullerits.

Here’s the video for “Pleromantic”.

Genre/Influences: Electro-Wave, Electro-Ambient.

Format: Digital, CD.

Background/Info: Kadri Sammel is an Estonian female artist who previously released two albums and a remixed full length on Cold Transmission Records. This new opus was released by the end of 2023 on Metropolis Records.

Content: Kadri Sammel remains faithful to her evasive, Electronic, style mixed with her angelic vocals on top. From pure danceable, Ambient reminding me of Delirium, to harder, bombastic cuts with guitar riffs on top this album sounds diversified. I also noticed Minimal-Electronics featuring cool bleeps and other Dance-Pop elements.

+ + + : It’s not easy to catch the sound of this new album which also makes the strength of Bedless Bones; a very personal interpretation of Electronic music. I still like the wafting sensation hanging over the work but also the darker elements coming through. The harder “Homeostasis” carried by a mysterious atmosphere is for sure a track to discover but I also recommend “Solar Animus” and “Tongue And Rhythm” which are more into dark Dance-Pop but here again supported by a mysterious touch. Kadri’s angelic timbre of voice remains great and excels at “Litha”.

– – – : It’s not easy to label Bedless Bones which maybe is the major difficulty for this talented artist to catch a wider audience.

Conclusion: Bedless Bones has achieved its most diversified work which stands for a free-styled Electro work.

Best songs: “Homeostasis”, “Solar Animus”, “Tongue And Rhythm”, “Litha”, “Dead Woman”, “Blood Citadel”.

Rate: 8.

Artist: www.facebook.com/bedlessbones

(Photo by Kadri Sammel) Out now is the all new video from Bedless Bones, “Solar Animus”, taken from “Mire Of Mercury” – the new album by this Estonian electro-noir musician. “Mire Of Mercury” is already the third album by Bedless Bones and was released on Metropolis Records in early November.

“The video is directed and edited by me and filmed by [Bedless Bones drummer] Anders Melts,” explains Sammel. And she continues to explain the track itself: “The song is inspired by the contrasexual archetype in the unconscious. The predominance of the shadow extends to a possession, a chronic eclipse of the sun. Animus in anima. So she has to transform her Eros.”

The Estonian post-industrial act Forgotten Sunrise have a new album out, “elu”. The new album is released on vinyl and digital formats and is the band’s the first full-length after ten years.

Released on the Brooklyn-born record label Ohm Resistance, the 8-track album “elu” starts off their upcoming trilogy “Hallelujah!”. This is the first LP for Forgotten Sunrise’s current formation as a trio, bringing Kadri Sammel (also known under the moniker Bedless Bones) and Jaan Pullerits aka Suva into the mix.

Forgotten Sunrise began life as a death metal band in the early 90s, part of the movement that spawned groups such as Amorphis, Beherit, Anathema, My Dying Bride, and Katatonia. The band experimented with the merging of many different genres from dark electro to death metal throughout their 31 year career, and stylistically considers itself as being a complete outsider industrial – or like they say, ‘outdustrial’. The Saare County-based group has evolved through many line-up changes since its formation in 1992, with founder Anders Melts remaining the only constant member.

You can check the album out on Bandcamp, where you can also order it on vinyl.

(Photo by Kadri Sammel) Out on August 11 on CD and already now digitally on Metropolis Records is the reissue of the Bedless Bones album “Sublime Malaise”. This reissue comes in advance of an all-new third album later in 2023. This extended reissue of “Sublime Malaise”, her 2019 debut album, adds four remixes to the original record.

Behind Bedless Bones we find Kadri Sammel, a singer-songwriter, producer, multi-instrumentalist and interdisciplinary artist from Tallinn, Estonia. As Bedless Bones, she experiments with electro-noir, building bridges and bending the borders between darkwave, EBM, techno beats, industrial sounds and ‘otherworldly’ atmospherics.

She is also a member of Estonian avant-garde deathbeat/outdustrial outfit Forgotten Sunrise and the singer in the UK/Estonian dystopian industrial band Deathsomnia. Additionally, under the alias DJ Dirt Vessel, she has been a crucial part of Beats From The Vault, an underground event series in Estonia that has been in existence since 1998.

Here are a few tracks from the “Sublime Malaise” album.

Genre/Influences: Electro-Wave, Ambient-Wave.

Format: Digital, CD, Vinyl.

Background/Info: This second studio-album by the Estonian solo-project Bedless Bones was released at the end of 2021. After a great debut album entitled “Sublime Malaise” and the remix-album “After Malaise” Kadri Sammel got inspired by themes like courage, fear, rebirth, growth and sanctity.

Content: The work takes off with an intro/prelude and rapidly walks on a path of dreamy Electro-Wave. The songs even have a poignant Ambient approach composed by electronics, guitar and a few acoustic instruments. The bewitching vocals of Kadri Semmel totally fit the global, mysterious, atmosphere.

+ + + : Bedless Bones has something unique. It’s not just Electro-Wave and definitely neither Ambient nor Gothic. It’s a melting pot of all aforementioned genres resulting in a fascinating work. The last part of the work reveals some great and poignant tracks. “In Omnia Paratus” even has a transcendental feeling which also comes back in the harder “Septentrional (Aurora)”. Last, but not least I also have to say a word about the artwork and especially the green color which is also fitting with the sphere hanging over the work.

– – – : The debut part sounds a bit hesitating but still an appetizer for the main and final part featuring great songs. It’s a pity we didn’t get a few more songs.

Conclusion: Bedless Bones confirms itself to be a project with a true potential and a fascinating approach in sound.

Best songs: “Septentrional (Aurora)”, “In Omnia Paratus”, “Ashes Indigo”, “The Iron Bough”.

Rate: 8.

Genre/Influences: Cold-Wave, Dark-Wave.

Format: Digital, CD.

Background/Info: After having released last year albums on Unknown Pleasures Records and ScentAir Records, Italian artist Marco Cattani (Halo Effect, The Mark) strikes back with a new opus on Wave Records. Chemical Waves have again invited numerous guest singers. Vocalists from Bedless Bones, The Arch, The Purge, Death Loves Veronica, Sara Stuttgart, Then Came The Rain, Velvet Kills, Iris Capricorn, XTR Human and Social Station contributed to the work.

Content: The sound formula hasn’t really changed. Chemical Waves remains driven by the dark legacy of 80s Cold/Dark-Wave music. The singers again each inject a very personal touch to the work, which creates an interesting diversity. From sensual vocals to low, resonating vocals there’s a lot to experience while you’ll also notice two instrumental cuts.

+ + + : Chemical Waves holds on the true spirit of Dark/Cold-Wave music, which is mainly created by the magic of the guitar playing. I heard some good matches with the singers of The Arch, The Purge and especially Su Eko/Velvet Kills, reminding me a bit of Placebo.

– – – : The global approach of this project remains interesting and sometimes exciting although I’m missing ‘the’ singer of this band. I also preferred previous productions, the sound becoming a bit too predictable while the songs are less efficient. Being too prolific is sometimes undermining quality…

Conclusion: This is not the album from Chemical Waves I would recommend listening to first.

Best songs: “Rangers On The Road”, “Demon In Me”.

Rate: (6 ½).

The Rome (IT) based post-punk act Chemical Waves returns with an all new album on April 30th via Wave Records. “Stories From The World Before” is the next chapter for the solo project of Marco Cattani (Halo Effect, The Mark) in collaborations with several international artists.

This time Cattani worked with Bedless Bones, Gerd Van Geel/The Arch, The Purge, Death Loves Veronica, Sara Stuttgart, Then Came The Rain, Su Eko/Velvet Kills, Iris Capricorn, Xtr Human and Social Station.

The result is a 12-track release for which a first video has just been released, namely one for “Kiss The Ring” featuring Bedless Bones. Note that the album will also be out as a CD ecopack limited to 200 copies.

Genre/Influences: Dark-wave, cold-wave, minimal-electro, post-punk.

Format: 2CD.

Background/Info: In a rather short lapse of time Cold Transmission Music has released an impressive number of qualitative bands and productions. The German label based near Frankfurt am Main released this label compilation as a double album featuring a total of twenty seven bands. The label is devoted to post-punk, cold-wave, shoegaze, new-wave and dark-wave.

Artists: SYZYGYX, ELZ And The Cult, Kiss Of The Whip, Hallows, Bedless Bones, La Mécanique, Dilk, Iamnoone, Icy Men, White Mansion, Iamtheshadow, Clone Culture, Control Room, The Gathering, Palais Ideal, Mark E Moon, Mary, The Bluebeard’s Castle, The Secret French Postcards, Vastron Vulture, Silent Runners, Pusu Button Press, Carlo Onda, Rosi, Monographic, Paradise Cove, Reconverb.

Content: “Spotlight” covers a rather diversified-, but related number of music styles. The main source of inspiration brings us the dark hours of the 80s music. This is an opportunity to discover young and upcoming talents in the genre while some other artists are composing a more contemporary- and personal sound, but still connected with new-wave music.

The album has a lot to offer and will therefore appeal to a wider audience; from minimal-electronics to pure post-punk and dark/cold-wave, “Spotlight” will for sure ravish all 80s lovers.

+ + + : A label compilation always is a kind of sonic window to discover the real potential and scope of a record company. I already discovered some talented artists on the German label (SYZYGYX, Mark E Moon, Bedless Bones ao), but this compilation also is an opportunity to discover some bands you maybe didn’t get the chance to hear before. The album’s diversity also is one of the main strengths. I especially want to mention the great opening, minimal-electro/wave cut by SYZYGYX and the more EBM-wave work of Bedless Bones –both confirming their potential. From the first disc I also recommend the powerful song by Elz And The Cult and the guitar-wave by Dilk. At the second disc I discovered great songs by Mark E Moon (also confirming to be one of the newest dark-wave sensations), the speed of Mary, the melancholia exposed by Push button Press and the brilliant cold-wave from Paradise Cove. Notice by the way that several songs are previously unreleased.

– – – : I don’t have any real minus points about this compilation, which perfectly illustrates the welfare of talented bands of this label.

Conclusion: I can only, but highly recommend buying this compilation, which will not disappoint you giving you the chance to discover a very international label roster!

Best bands: Paradise Cove, SYZYGYX, Mark E Moon, Bedless Bones, Mary, Dilk.

Rate: (8).

Genre/Influences: Cold-wave, dark-wave, gothic.

Format: Digital, CD.

Background/Info: Chemical Waves is a project driven by Marco Cattani (Halo Effect, The Mark). This project has already been active for numerous years now and has self-released a lot of stuff in between 2012 and 2015. Chemical Waves is now back on track unleashing its official debut album on the French label Unknown Pleasures Records.

Content: Marco Cattani invited several guest singers to accomplish his work. Bedless Bones, Closed Mouth, HIV+, Virgin Tears, L’Avenir, Antiflvx, Egoprisme and RjVj have been featured. It resulted in a rather diverse album, which is mainly driven by the good-old dark/cold-wave demons from the 80s. The different singers each inject a very personal touch to the work moving from sensual passages to pure cavernous vocals. The guitar playing brings the 80s spirit to life. Some songs remind me of The Virgin Prunes, but globally speaking you get a nice pastiche from the cold/dark-wave era.

+ + + : The diversity of the tracklist makes it interesting. I was mainly convinced by the perfect symbiosis between Marco Cattani and Kadri Sammel from Bedless Bones. I like this girl’s work and especially her somewhat sterile, sensual timbre of voice creates a great match with the music. Another noticeable cut is the one featuring Jason Sloan (L’Avenir), which has something mysterious, and is even a bit ritual-like. On top of the composition I especially like the cool guitar playing injecting a truly retro-spirit into the work.

– – – : One of the very few cuts that couldn’t totally convince me is the one featuring Egoprisme. I’m not convinced by the possible match between the singer and the song, which also sounds a bit more electro-driven.

Conclusion: “Even When We Fall Apart” is an interesting album; the concept of working with different vocalists is nothing new although not always successful. I think it however works for this album!

Best songs: “Denied”, “Hymn”, “The Sphinx”, “Void And Light”.

Rate: (7½).

Artist: www.facebook.com/chemicalwaves

Bedless Bones is the sonic brainchild of Estonian female artist Kadri Sammel. There isn’t an elaborate story behind the band name. As Kadri explains ‘I wanted to have a moniker for my solo project, that would evoke a certain unease and would have a murky undertone, and also an unexpected element – sort of like my music, I guess. I basically just needed a name to upload my first experimental / ambient tracks on SoundCloud. I didn’t really expect that it would develop much further from that, but now I am stuck with this name’. The debut album “Sublime Malaise” released on Cold Transmission Music is a refreshing piece of music inspired by dark-wave, cold-wave and a few more related genres. I talked about it all with Kadri Sammel.

(Courtesy by Inferno Sound Diaries)

Q: First things first, can you give us some brief background information how you got in touch with underground/electronic music and how did you come to set up Bedless Bones?

Kadri: I have always been drawn to alternative and underground stuff, ever since I consciously started listening to music. But I only ever got around to electronic music that I actually liked sometime in the second half of my teen years. Before that I was into punk, post-punk, alternative-rock. A massive change happened, when I started to visit Beats From The Vault party series here in Tallinn, led by Anders Melts, who later became my partner and bandmate in industrial/deathbeat band Forgotten Sunrise. Anders introduced me to an array of EBM and old-school industrial bands, black-metal, and lots of other obscure & unknown underground music. I had the urge to make my own music for years before, but it was then when I felt really inspired to start my solo project.

Q: Tell us a bit more about the sources of inspiration and possible influences plus the kind of sound you try to create?

Kadri: I never follow a sound, but rather a feeling, and a context in which a sound could be placed. It doesn’t excite me to mimic (or create) a style and then make all songs in that way. I like to see where the music takes me and experiment. I’d say all my songs sound a little different, but they have a certain atmosphere. Again, I usually don’t have direct references in mind while I write music, but now and then I hear things that trigger ideas. My conscious and unconscious inspirations have been Nick Cave, early Fever Ray, Dead Can Dance, Einstürzende Neubauten, nighttime wanderings, my own experiences, people I’ve met, films I’ve seen, art, dreams and nightmares.

Q: You last year released your debut full length “Sublime Malaise”. The title has something intriguing, but what kind of album did you want to accomplish and how do you look back at the global production process?

Kadri: This is such a funny question to me, because I literally had no clue what I was doing. I recorded the album at home and my only goal was to find a label to release it in physical format, so I could show it to my parents -here is the reason and purpose of why I was wasting so much time on this music thing. I was lucky that Cold Transmission Music allowed me to fulfill my vision and put it out just like it was. They have also done all the work with promotion and sales.

Q: I noticed you already composed a new song/single (cf. “The Pyre”), which hasn’t been featured on the album. What is this song all about and do you notice main evolutions compared to “Sublime Malaise”?

Kadri: “The Pyre” is more like a breath in between, not an indicator of where my music is going. I have been surrounded by a lot of dance music recently, because I’ve been playing more as a DJ, so creating something slow, cinematic and quiet was a nice stopover. That is why I released it separately. It was written in the beginning of the virus quarantine and lockdown, so it has a reference to these times as well.

Q: You also have something with clips. The clips are dark and even somewhat tormented, but still artistic (cf. “Limbs Entwined”). What do you want to express throughout the clips and is there a link with the lyrical content of the songs?

Kadri: The visuals come as a reaction to the music, but I don’t follow the lyrics strictly, if at all. With “Limbs Entwined” I always envisioned bizarre movements of the body, and I developed the idea from that. Sometimes I want to have more narration in the visuals (like my first video for “True Devotion”), and sometimes it’s very subtle. But I never want to go too far with the visual implications, because I want the viewer to have their own thoughts and ideas of what it is about -triggering others’ imagination is my main interest and excitement.

Q: I’m always wondered why there’re less women involved with electro-underground music and especially when it comes to the composition process! Do you’ve an explanation and does it mean this scene is just a man- or macho thing?

Kadri: I don’t know. I mean it’s quite hard to do everything yourself, it takes time and work, especially when your previous knowledge and skill set has been quite limited (like it was in my case). It’s much easier to join a band and be the token singer or synth player. I wouldn’t have been able to do it if there weren’t female visionaries, composers, producers & one-woman-armies before me, and they are the ones I look up to the most. I hope there are more to come.

Genre/Influences: Electro-wave, wave-pop,
experimental.

Format: Digital, CD.

Background/Info: “Sublime Malaise” is the
official debut album from Estonian female artist Kadri Sammel. Sound-wise the
album has been introduced as being inspired by dark-wave, cold-wave and a few
more related genres.

Content: One of the main
characteristics from this artist is her particular, sensual and somewhat
whispering timbre of voice. The impact of the vocals has been reinforced by the
minimalism of the sound production. It’s not an easy thing defining the style
Bedless Bones is dealing with. It clearly brings us back to some retro
electro-wave & -pop influences, but some cuts also have something astral-like,
which even leads to a cinematographic approach (cf. “Losing Control”).

+ + + : I think the main strength
of this work is the fusion between a rather simplistic, but great sound
production and efficient, sexy and icy vocals. Another important aspect is the
production of the drums, which especially for the opening cuts has something
bombastic. There are many noticeable songs featured, especially “Limbs
Entwined” and “Sad And Alone” both are my favorites.

– – – : This album is a great
discovery and especially the first half of the work is top while the second
half remains cool, but from an inferior level.

Conclusion: Bedless Bones has
accomplished a real noticeable debut. I highly recommend this album if you’re
an electro-pop lover in search of something different…

Best songs: “Limbs Entwined”, “Sad
And Alone”, “Nemesis Unborn”, “Where Is My Voice”, “No Ceremony”.

Rate: (8).
