Laibach continue their 12-month celebration of the classic 1987 album, “Opus Dei”, with a special Record Store Day Black Friday release collating the band’s John Peel Sessions for the first time on vinyl. The release is out today, in store only, with any remaining copies of the limited-edition (1000 copies worldwide) available online from 8am on Saturday 30 November.

John Peel was an early fan of the Slovenian band, he played them on the show often, and booked them for two of his Peel Sessions – one in 1986 and one in 1987.

This limited-edition vinyl album contains both sessions. The A-Side features the John Peel session from 24 June 1986, with versions of “Krvava gruda – plodna zemlja” from the “Nova Akropola” album and “Krst” from their album of the same name. It was this session that introduced the world to the first inkling of what “Opus Dei” would be, through an early incarnation of “Live Is Life”, the band’s cover version of Opus’ Euro-hit. The second session, from 24 April 1987, has interpretations of tracks that would feature on “Opus Dei”, their debut album for Mute – “Transnational” and “Leben-Tod” alongside “Krvoprelitje (Ti, ki izzivaš)”.

Laibach made such a deep impression on John Peel that they were selected for a documentary that explored his record collection. Watch “L is for…. Laibach” below, which examines his fascination with the band.

The sleeve features the band standing below a Peel monument (adapted from the original shot of the band at Karl Marx’s tomb in Highgate Cemetery, London).

Since you’re here …

… we have a small favour to ask. More people are reading Side-Line Magazine than ever but advertising revenues across the media are falling fast. Unlike many news organisations, we haven’t put up a paywall – we want to keep our journalism as open as we can - and we refuse to add annoying advertising. So you can see why we need to ask for your help.

Side-Line’s independent journalism takes a lot of time, money and hard work to produce. But we do it because we want to push the artists we like and who are equally fighting to survive.

If everyone who reads our reporting, who likes it, helps fund it, our future would be much more secure. For as little as 5 US$, you can support Side-Line Magazine – and it only takes a minute. Thank you.
