According to an online friend and a few other forums I post on "Witch House" is the new term being applied to distorted-sounding dark ambient.

So... actual genre or just another shitty genre tag?

(Considering it's mentioned in Pitchfork I'm guessing the latter, but you may wish to debate)

Any artists to mention in this field? Anything I can look up on Beatport?

i brought this up ages ago and Cult got all high and mighty on my ass.

its interesting if you're cool with lo-fi stuff with very very basic production. I've got a split from White Ring and oOoOO, I like it alot.

i think the name "witch house" came from one lonely person on a blog somewhere, but thanks to last.fm and all those its become a "ligitimate" name.

The one I've heard of most is one that has a tribar cross between two bi-bar crosses as its name. I'm not sure how you'd pronounce it. Tri-Cross or something like that?

Sounds a hell of a lot like old Giorgio Moroder or Tangerine Dream soundtrack stuff.

  11. witch house...WHAT THE FUCK? seriously when did 'dark ambient' become not good enough? i am completely unaware of the bands mentioned, but from the description 'distorted sounding dark ambient' = ambient noise or noise ambient maybe? why does it need a stupid ass name that has nothing to do with sound. where does it stop...whats next, "big tree" music or "red table" music...?

i like "witch house" more than "dark ambient"

    no offence.

the name "dark ambient" bores me alone.

Some real hidden gems in the style of music. Sometimes I am like WTF :/
And then later I am WTF :D

This stuff is like, you only have a couple of analog synths a Tascam tap recorder and all you ever do is watch Italian Horror films. But the more I listen to it I think the more it makes sense. Fucking weird..

  15. I really can't get into this stuff, mainly because it's so achingly self-consciously 'slumming-it' trendy. All the stuff I've heard seems to play more like a vaguely musical fashion statement than anything genuinely inspired or aspirational.

  17. Seamus- the same could be said for our electro-industrial scene. Honestly the same can be said for just about every "scene". But something about this abstract, lo-fi, often noisy and disjointed type of music that I find very appealing.

I was just as adamant about it in the beginning. I used to make fun of Salem and White Ring on the posts. But now I get it. It's like I see from a new view. You know how sometimes you watch a David Lynch film and everything just clicks into place? Other times you just aghast at the nonsense and insisting the plot is broken?

It turns out that people are saying "Witch-House", was a joke term, like "Goth" was originally a joke term. I do not know what this shit is called anymore and I don't care. I like how a lot of it sounds. Especially Fostercare, Zola Jesus, //TENSE//, and The Horn The Hunt.
