I know it's cheesy but I really miss vocoders ala Neuroactive's Space Divider (Slow Mix)

  2. Plenty of vocoders on some new stuff. Have you heard the vocal treatments on the V01D album? Superb.

No forums with people arguing about the music, they just listened to it.

Oh, you mean the actual MUSIC...

    @Nicolas

For once I am not arguing about it, I am just asking what elements people miss from the old days. It's still called the same thing it was back then but it's certainly not the same sound.

  7. On a non-sarcastic note, however, the one thing I really miss from older records is the crazy amounts of layering, ambience and detail that bands like FLA used to use really well. Took a listen back to Hard Wired for the first time in years the other day, IMO it still sounds remarkable considering its age, and it has this real sort of chaotic, hellish feel to it, like you're in the middle of a collapsing building. I think the only band who have come up with that intensity of atmosphere recently are Decree.

  10. Artists who can actually play an instrument. They're out there, just few and far between.

And I know I'm guilty of this, but more mic'd and tweaked sounds instead of just VSTs.

    Amen to that

    1) The lack of VST Presets.

    2) The fact that the artists had to know what they wanted, what they were doing and had to WORK to get the music made (not just fire up Mummy & Daddy's lap-top). See Point 1, I guess.

    3) Waiting weeks (sometimes months) for an overseas mail-order package.

    4) Receiving said overseas package of the artist's work, rather than 3 tracks and 19 My-Space remixes. And (generally) loving it till the disc/vinyl wore-out.

    5) Stickers. Getting stickers was cool.

    6) Getting your info from various (lovingly put together) Zines. Without having to look at shitty ads for shitty "Goff" Dating sites.

    7) Sliding the disc into the tray. Honestly, it's as satisfying as pulling the cork from the bottle.

    8) No Haywire Drama. Shit. Sorry - thought I was on Letterman there for a sec....

Whatever Portion Control is doing, that's what is missing from most scene bands.

80's-90's synth lead sounds. The rave-VST lead sounds are so cheesy. Even "big" bands like suicide commando are using those sounds. they are awful.

Definitely tha funk from bands like Hula, Bourbonese Qualk and Cabaret Voltaire, but which particular old industrial/ebm are we discussing? 70's, 80's or 90's?

I'd have to say the funk also. Variation in rhythm on an album is always a good thing.

Most S-L members have never heard of Hula & CV:) I think S80 is referring to late 80's/early 90's electro-industrial. NEWSFLASH: old school electro is alive & kicking!
