you know guys, at the risk of stating the obvious, most pre-releases in the realm of movies (scripts, dvds) are usually "tagged" to identify the recipient...
would it really be THAT hard to insert an identifying code into a promo release?
shit, these days you could run an individual 6-digit code through a vocoder, tune it to the track & insert it in the mix for each promo (seriously, there can't be THAT many. It's an afternoon's work and it kills piracy. Suck it up).
No-one listening on the dance-floor's gonna care..
But it would be fairly easy to pick up in an early-release mp3, no?
And fairly hard to edit out.
Look, basically you want something that says "this disc is the property of...." without being obtrusive to the track itself.
If it turns up online prior to (hell, after) release, well there's legal action of course.
At the very least artists know which DJs to Black-List (and you can then spread the word).
